Chapter Nine

__

The piercing wail of the ambulance siren sliced through the cool night air, reverberating off the buildings lining the road. Inside the vehicle, Gemini sat anxiously beside Ford, who was clutching Fourth's hand as if it were a lifeline. Ford's tears flowed freely, tracing a path down his cheeks, while Gemini murmured silent prayers, his heart racing with fear and guilt. Each bump in the road felt like an eternity, the weight of uncertainty pressing heavily on them.

The city lights blurred into streaks of color as the ambulance sped towards the hospital. Gemini's gaze was fixed on Fourth, whose pale face was bathed in the flickering blue and red lights. He could see the faint rise and fall of Fourth's chest, a fragile rhythm that filled him with both hope and dread.

As they approached the hospital, the bright lights illuminated the night, and the ambulance pulled up to the entrance. Medical staff rushed to meet them, swiftly transferring Fourth onto a stretcher. Gemini and Ford followed closely, their minds racing with worry as they watched the hurried efforts of the doctors.

Once in the emergency room, time seemed to stretch and bend. The sterile smell of antiseptic filled the air, and the distant sounds of urgent conversations blended into a chaotic symphony. Gemini felt a knot tighten in his stomach, his eyes darting between the doctors and Ford, who sat silently, tears still glistening in his eyes.

Minutes felt like hours before the doctor finally emerged, his expression serious yet calm. Gemini's breath caught in his throat as he approached, and he felt Ford's hand squeeze his in shared anxiety.

"Fourth is stable," the doctor announced, a wave of relief washing over Gemini. "He's unconscious but responding well to treatment. We'll need to monitor him closely for a while."

Gemini let out a shaky breath, sinking into a nearby chair. Relief flickered through him, yet the gnawing worry refused to dissipate. He turned to Ford, who was still sniffling softly, the sound echoing in the otherwise quiet corridor. Guilt surged within Gemini, a tide that threatened to drown him.

"I'm so sorry, Ford. It's all my fault," he said, his voice barely above a whisper as he pulled Ford into a comforting embrace.

Ford took a moment to steady his breathing, finally pulling back to meet Gemini's gaze. "It wasn't your fault, Gem. You did everything you could."

Before their conversation could delve deeper, Winny and Satang burst through the doors, their faces drawn with concern. "How is he?" Satang asked, glancing between them, his worry palpable.

"He's fine now, but he's still unconscious," Gemini replied, trying to maintain a calm exterior.Satang exhaled, visibly relieved, while Winny scanned the room. "His sister is here," he said, nodding toward the entrance as a woman stepped through, her expression a mix of worry and determination.

Ford's face brightened for a moment as he rushed to the newcomer. "P'Tu... I'm so sorry..." he choked out, enveloping her in a tight hug.

Tu, Fourth's older sister, wrapped her arms around Ford, offering him solace. "Don't cry now, Ford. Fourth is a strong kid," she reassured him, her voice steady and soothing as she gently stroked his back.

The warmth of Tu's embrace seemed to ease the tension in Ford's shoulders, but Gemini could still see the shadows of worry etched on his face. He stepped closer, feeling the weight of the situation settle over them all. The hallway felt like a sanctuary filled with shared anxiety, yet also a space where bonds could strengthen in the face of adversity.

"I know now what happened" Tu said, pulling back to look at Ford with concern.

"It was my fault... if only Iโ€”" Ford started, his voice trembling as he fought back more tears.

"No, no, listen to me," Tu interrupted softly but firmly. "Whatever happened, it's not your fault. Fourth knows you care. He'll pull through this." Her words wrapped around Ford like a protective shield, and Gemini felt a spark of hope igniting in the heaviness of the moment.

The hours that followed were a blur of anxious waiting. Gemini, unable to shake the guilt that clung to him like a shroud, remained by Fourth's side, his hand resting reassuringly on the younger boy's arm. He watched as the machines beeped rhythmically, each sound a testament to Fourth's fragile life.

As the night wore on, a sense of exhaustion settled over Gemini. He had not slept, nor had he left Fourth's side for even a moment. Winny, sensing his friend's exhaustion, tried to persuade him to rest, but Gemini refused. He couldn't bear to leave Fourth alone, not when he felt so responsible for what had happened.

Finally, as the first rays of dawn peeked through the hospital windows, Fourth stirred. His eyes fluttered open, and he looked around the room, his gaze landing on Gemini. A wave of relief washed over Gemini, a feeling so profound that it brought tears to his eyes.

"Fourth..." Gemini whispered, his voice choked with emotion.Fourth's eyes widened in recognition, but he didn't speak. He looked at Gemini, then at the machines surrounding him, and finally at the white ceiling. The memory of the attack, the pain, the fear, all came flooding back.

"It's okay, Fourth," Gemini said softly, reaching out to gently touch his hand. "You're safe now."

Fourth's hand trembled slightly as he squeezed back. He was still weak, but he was alive. The doctor, alerted by the sound of Fourth's voice, rushed into the room. He examined Fourth, his expression turning from concern to relief as he confirmed that the young boy was stable and recovering well.

"He's going to be fine," the doctor said, his voice filled with assurance. "He'll need plenty of rest, but he's on the mend."

Gemini let out a sigh of relief, the tension that had been gripping him for hours finally easing. He looked at Fourth, his heart overflowing with gratitude. He was alive. As the doctor left the room, Gemini turned to Fourth, his gaze filled with a mixture of guilt and love.

"Fourth," he began, his voice trembling slightly. "I'm so sorry. It's all my fault. I should have protected you. I should have been there for you."

Fourth looked at him, his eyes filled with understanding. "It's not your fault, Gem," he said softly. "I know you didn't mean to hurt me."

Gemini's heart ached. He had been so consumed by his own fear and guilt that he had failed to see Fourth's pain, his vulnerability.

"I was wrong, Fourth," Gemini said, his voice thick with emotion. "I let Prom fool me. I let him manipulate me. I shouldn't have listened to him. I shouldn't have turned my back on you."Fourth reached out and gently took Gemini's hand. "It's okay, Gem," he said. "I understand."Gemini looked into Fourth's eyes, seeing the forgiveness and compassion there. He felt a wave of shame wash over him, but also a sense of hope. He had hurt Fourth, but he could make things right. He could be there for him, protect him, and show him the love and support he deserved.

"I'm going to take care of you, Fourth," Gemini said, his voice firm with resolve. "I'm not going to let anyone hurt you again."

Fourth smiled faintly, a flicker of warmth in his eyes. "I know you will, Gem," he said. "I trust you."
