Chapter 16: The Photo
21:12, 1 June 2023It had been a couple days since the incident. Neither Luigi or Bowser would leave their homes. They didn’t want to. The koopalings and Kamek tried everything they could to get their king out of bed, but the onlys times he would would be to trash his room more, or play quiet sad songs on his piano. With the koopa King in a depressed state, the entire Koopa Kingdom became sad. Luigi on the other hand, wouldn’t get out of his bed for anything. He would just lie there, staring off, crying, or sleeping away the day because he rather sleep than be awake. His hat still smelled like Bowser and his castle so he just hugged his hat as hours passed by.
Mario, Peach, and even Daisy tried everything they could as well to get him out of bed. Mario thought Luigi was just scared of something, but after a day or two, Peach and Daisy knew that this wasn’t fear, it was the signs of heartbreak. They couldn’t get Luigi to say anything but they knew Luigi had fallen in love with Bowser. To try and get Luigi to feel a bit better, Peach sent a letter to the Koopa Kingdom about returning Polterpup, but she never got a response. This confused the two princesses, Bowser would take any chance to talk or meet with Peach but they got nothing. Daisy then had a theory, what if Bowser fell in love with Luigi as well? Either way, they both knew something was going on between them.
Eventually, with enough convincing Mario and Peach finally got Luigi out of the castle. Luigi wanted to stay in bed but he knew he was worrying everyone and he needed to show some sort of sign that he was getting better when in reality he wasn’t. They took him to a big pond on a hill near the borderline of the Mushroom Kingdom and the Koopa Kingdom. Back with Bowser, Polterpup had realized what happened and saw the effects in place. Now Polterpup didn’t like this one bit, he didn’t mind that Luigi left him here, he knew Luigi would do things without thinking when he was terrified, and he still thought of him as the best owner ever. Polterpup entered Bowser’s room and saw him lying in his bed again. He barked at Bowser but got no response, he kept barking until Bowser finally responded.
“Go away mutt..” Bowser said, it wasn't what Polterpup wanted but it was a start. Polterpup got on Bowser’s bed and began pulling on Bowser’s spiked wristband. He just pushed Polterpup away, Polterpup whimsper slightly, he then saw the photo on Bowser’s nightstand. When Bowser himself looked over at Polterpup, he saw him pick up the photo. “Hey! Give that back mutt!” Bowser yelled as he got up and tried to grab Polterpup. Polterpup ran out of the room, Bowser adjusted his shell quickly and ran after Polterpup. Polterpup kept running and running. Bowser chased behind and when Polterpup ran out of the castle Bowser yelled for his car. Once he got his clown car, he flew after Polterpup and quickly catched up to him, he needed that photo back.
As Bowser chased Polterpup, Luigi was sitting by the pond alone. Mario and Peach had headed back to the carriage to grab some items to set up a picnic, while Luigi just sadly looked upon the view, the waters still in the pond. But then Polterpup ran out of the forest and to Luigi. He jumped up and began hugging and petting Polterpup “Polterpup! Your back! I’m sorry I left you there! Wait- what's that?..” Luigi set Polterpup down and took the photo, he looked at it closely, and he recognized it. It was a photo of when he, Bowser, and the koopalings were all playing together. Kamek had taken this photo, they all looked so happy.
Bowser had lowered the clown car to the ground near the end of the border between the Mushroom and Koopa Kingdoms and chased Polterpup. Once he ran out of the forest, he stopped when we saw him. His eyes softened, he was still hurt, but for some reason seeing him made him feel a bit better. “Luigi?..” He said softly, calling to him. Luigi turned around to see Bowser with the photo in hand.
“Bowser?..”
