Chapter Forty Three: Doomsday
22:04, 12 December 2020The Daleks approached, screaming their warcry. Alex was struck with a horrible feeling of familiarity, the memory of a similar scene flashing before her eyes. For a moment, panic threatened to take hold, the sharp echo of inflicted pain making her gasp.
Then she steeled herself. There was one difference from then to now, one difference that meant all the world—she was not alone. So she had to act.
And act she did. "Daleks!" she exclaimed, grabbing their attention away from the others. "You're called Daleks. I know your name. Think about it. How can I know that? A girl who knows about the Daleks and the Time War. If you want to know how, then keep us alive. That's all I'm asking. Me and my friends."
"Yeah, Daleks. Time War. Me too," Mickey said, nodding along.
"Yeah. And me," Rajesh agreed.
The black Dalek eyed them. "You will be necessary." It turned to the other three Daleks. "Report. What is the status of the Genesis Ark?"
"Status: hibernation."
"Commence awakening. The Genesis Ark must be protected above all else."
"The Daleks." Mickey frowned. "You said they were all dead."
Alex shrugged. "Clearly not dead enough, but never mind that." Her eyes were fixed on the device in the centre of the room. "What the hell is a Genesis Ark?"
The black Dalek swivelled round to face the trio, eyeing them with its unsettling eyestalk. "Which of you is least important?"
Alex blinked, affronted. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"Which of you is most important?" the Dalek repeated.
"No," Alex decided, glaring. "Not a bloody chance. We don't work like that."
"Designate the least important!"
"This is my responsibility," Rajesh murmured, stepping forwards.
"Don't!" Alex protested, but he ignored her.
"I... er, I represent the Torchwood Institute. Anything you need, you come through me. Leave these two alone."
"You will kneel."
"What for?" Rajesh asked, brows furrowed.
"Kneel." Rajesh knelt. "The Daleks need information about current Earth history."
"Yeah, well, I can give you a certain amount of intelligence, but nothing that will compromise Homeland Security."
"Speech is not necessary," the black Dalek assured the man. "We will extract brainwaves." Three Dalek plunger attachments enveloped Rajesh's head, and he started to panic.
"Don't! I—I'll tell you everything you need! No! No!" The scientist broke off into a pained scream, and all Mickey and Alex could do was watch as his body rapidly aged until it was nothing but a dusty old skeleton, falling to the floor with a dull thunk.
"His mind spoke of a second species invading Earth infected by the superstition of ghosts," the black Dalek reported.
"You didn't need to kill him!" Alex seethed.
"Neither did we need him alive," a Dalek returned, and she glared at it.
"Dalek Thay, investigate outside," the black Dalek commanded.
"I obey." The Dalek rolled out of the door into a nearby corridor.
"Establish visual contact. Lower communications barrier," the black Dalek ordered. A big viewscreen appeared where the sphere used to be, and Mickey and Alex looked up at it to see a pair of Cybermen march into view.
"Identify yourselves," Dalek Thay's voice came through slightly tinny, but audible nonetheless.
"You will identify first."
"State your identity."
"You will identify first."
"Identify!"
Mickey snorted. "It's like Stephen Hawkins meets the Speaking Clock."
"That answer is illogical," a Cyberman stated. "You will modify."
"Daleks do not take orders."
"You have identified as Daleks."
"Outline resembles the inferior species known as Cybermen," the black Dalek noted, its voice presumably transmitting.
"We followed in the wake of your sphere."
"Long range scans confirm the presence of crude cybernetic constructs on worldwide scale."
While the Daleks were distracted, Alex slipped her phone out of her pocket. She held it behind her back, touch-typing a message: Dalek and Cybermen edition of Jeremy Kyle live and transmitting. They don't know we're here. She pressed send, returning her attention to the available spectacle.
"We must protect the Genesis Ark," a Dalek was saying.
"Our species are similar, though your design is inelegant," a Cyberman replied.
"Daleks have no concept of elegance," Dalek Thay stated monotonously.
"This is obvious. But consider, our technologies are compatible. Cybermen plus Daleks. Together, we could upgrade the universe."
"You propose an alliance?"
"This is correct."
"Request denied."
The Cybermen readied their weapons. "Hostile elements will be deleted."
Dalek Thay, however, had other ideas. "Exterminate!" Thay, 2, Cybermen, 0.
The screen changed to show the Cyberleader. "Daleks, be warned. You have declared war upon the Cybermen."
"This is not war. This is pest control."
"We have five million Cybermen. How many are you?"
"Four."
"You would destroy the Cybermen with four Daleks?"
"We would destroy the Cybermen with one Dalek. You are superior in only one respect."
"What is that?"
"You are better at dying. Raise communications barrier!"
The viewscreen faded to black, but one Dalek interrupted, "Wait! Rewind image by nine rells." The screen showed the Doctor, his head popping up behind the Cyberleader. "Identify grid seven gamma frame. This male registers as enemy."
"The female's heartbeat has increased," the black Dalek noted.
"Oh has it?" Mickey teased, nudging the redhead.
"Shut it," she muttered, blushing.
"Identify him."
She sighed. "All right, then. If you really want to know, that's the Doctor." The black Dalek recoiled. "Oh, yeah. That's more like it. Five million Cybermen? Easy. One Doctor? Now you're scared."
Dalek Thay returned victorious. "Cyber threat irrelevant. Concentrate on the Genesis Ark." The Daleks all converged on the Ark, attaching their plungers to it.
"Why are we being kept alive?" Mickey wondered.
"Maybe they need us," Alex guessed, shrugging.
Mickey sighed. "Well, I could transport out of here, but it only carries one, and I'm not leaving you."
"You've changed since you blamed that broken vase on me," Alex remarked, smirking.
"Hey! I was ten!" the man protested.
"Excuses, excuses," the redhead teased, rolling her eyes.
"Still, I can't think what the Daleks need with me. I'm nothing to them."
Alex frowned again, staring at the Genesis Ark. "I'm not so sure. Whatever's inside the Ark is waking up, and I've seen something like this before. The first time I saw a Dalek, it was broken. It was dying. But I accidentally touched it, and I, er, I brought it back to life. It's like the Doctor said, when you travel in time in the TARDIS, you soak up all this background radiation. It's harmless; it's just there. But in the Time War, the Daleks evolved so they could use it as a power supply."
"Bet he loves it when you talk technical," Mickey smirked. Alex swatted at him, blushing.
"Shut up! If the Daleks have got something inside that thing, and it needs waking up..."
"They need you."
"You've travelled in time. Either of us would do. They only need both of us so they can threaten one to coerce the other."
Mickey blinked, surprised. "You're good at this!"
She flashed him a grin. "They may not be machines, but they're programmed like them."
"But why would they build something they can't open themselves?" Mickey frowned.
The black Dalek's head swivelled to face them. "The technology is stolen. The Ark is not of Dalek design."
"Then who built it?" Mickey questioned.
"The Time Lords. This is all that survives of their Home World."
"What's inside?" Alex asked.
"The future." The redhead made a face. That was ominous.
***
A while later, the Daleks perked up, all disconnecting from the Ark.
"Final stage of awakening," one reported.
"Your handprint will open the Ark," the black Dalek told Alex.
"Fuck you," she replied nonchalantly.
The Dalek's laser gun shifted to point at Mickey. "Obey or the male will die."
Alex sighed. "Oh, alright then," she muttered, moving toward the Ark.
"Don't," Mickey tried, but she winked at him as she passed, and he frowned. What was she doing?
"Place your hand upon the casket."
"All right. I mean, I'm gonna end up as ashes anyway, right, so what the hell?" She hesitated, her hand hovering over the Ark, then turned away. "If you, er, escaped the Time War, don't you wanna know what happened?"
"Place your hand—"
"What happened to the Emperor?" she teased.
The black Dalek hesitated. "The Emperor survived?"
"Well, yeah. He survived the Time War, alright. But then he met me." She smiled. "'Cause if I'm going to die, I'm going to make the truth known. That I met the Emperor, and then I put the Time Vortex in his head and I turned him to dust. Get that? The God of all Daleks, and I destroyed him, and in doing so I mutated into a whole new species. Basically, I'm the girl who killed the Emperor." She shed her perception filter. "Come and get me."
"You will be exterminated!" the black Dalek screamed.
The Doctor skipped in, wearing his 3D glasses again. "Oh, now, hold on, wait a minute."
"Alert! Alert! You are the Doctor!"
"Well, you're not wrong," he quipped.
"Sensors report he is unarmed," a Dalek stated.
The Doctor grinned. "That's me. Always."
"Then you are powerless."
"Not me. Never." He turned to Alex. "Hey, you good?"
"Perfect."
"As usual, then." The Time Lord looked at Mickey, one of his hands resting on Alex's waist already, as if to reassure himself that she was okay. "And Mickity McMickey. Nice to see you!"
"And you, boss," Mickey grinned, bumping fists with the Doctor.
"Social interaction will cease!"
The Doctor turned back to the Daleks with a somewhat sheepish expression.
"How did you survive the Time War?" the black Dalek questioned.
The Time Lord's face darkened. "By fighting. On the front line. I was there at the Fall of Arcadia. Someday I might even come to terms with that. But you lot ran away!"
"We had to survive."
"The last four Daleks in existence. So, what's so special about you?" the Doctor wondered.
"They have names," Alex reported.
"I am Dalek Thay."
"Dalek Sec."
"Dalek Jast."
"Dalek Caan."
The Doctor looked vaguely impressed. "So that's it! At last! The Cult of Skaro. I thought you were just a legend."
"Who are they?" Alex asked.
"A secret order above and beyond the Emperor himself. Their job was to imagine, think as the enemy thinks. Even dared to have names. All to find new ways of killing."
Mickey pointed at the Genesis Ark. "But that thing, they said it was yours. I mean, Time Lords. They built it. What does it do?"
"I don't know," the Doctor shrugged, but his eyes were full of worry. "Never seen it before."
Alex narrowed her eyes. "But it's Time Lord."
"Both sides had secrets," the Time Lord pointed out, before turning to Dalek Sec. "What is it? What have you done?"
"Time Lord science will restore Dalek supremacy," Dalek Sec stated.
"What does that mean? What sort of Time Lord science? What do you mean?" the Doctor demanded.
Alex's eyes widened. "Oh. You said one touch from a time traveller would wake it up. Technology using the one thing a Dalek can't do. Touch." She shook her head in wonder, wandering closer to the creatures. "Sealed inside your casing, not feeling anything ever, from birth to death. Locked inside a metal cage, completely alone—well, I mean, that explains your voice. No wonder you scream."
"The Doctor will open the Ark!"
The Doctor snorted loudly. "The Doctor will not!"
"You have no way of resisting."
"Well, you got me there. Although there is always this." He held up his sonic screwdriver.
"A sonic probe?"
The Time Lord pouted, offended. "That's screwdriver!"
"It is harmless," Dalek Sec dismissed.
"Oh, yes," the Doctor agreed. "Harmless is just the word. That's why I like it. Doesn't kill, doesn't wound, doesn't maim. But I'll tell you what it does do. It is very good at opening doors." He buzzed it for a second. The huge laboratory doors blew in, allowing Jake Simmonds and a Cyberman entry, guns blazing. Alex quickly whipped up a forcefield over herself, the Doctor, and Mickey. "Kez, you've got to get out!" She nodded, and started making her way past the firefight to the doors, but she stumbled along the way. Somebody helped her up, and she nearly fainted when she saw the parallel version of Pete Tyler ushering her to safety.
As Mickey and the Doctor made their way out after Alex, the human got jostled, and put his hand out to steady himself on the Ark. He, Jake, and the Doctor managed to reach Alex and Pete just outside the doors. The boys closed the doors behind them.
"Jake, check the stairwell," the Doctor suggested, putting his hand between Alex's wings as he could see she was a little overwhelmed with the shock of her parallel best friend and father turning up out of the blue. "The rest of you, come on."
"I just fell, I didn't mean it!" Mickey was apologising profusely as they hurried along, for opening the Genesis Ark.
"Mickey, without us, they'd have opened it by force. To do that, they'd have blown up the sun. You've done us a favour. Now, run!" the Doctor explained.
Ahead of them, Pete shot down a couple of Cybermen, revealing Jackie and Rose standing behind the smouldering heaps of metal.
"Pete?" Jackie asked, her eyes wide, while Rose went to hug Alex, the Doctor, and Mickey.
"Hello, Jacks," Pete replied, smiling.
"I said there were ghosts, but that's not fair. Why him?" Jackie whined, frowning.
"I'm not a ghost," Pete assured.
"But you're dead. You died twenty years ago, Pete."
"It's Pete from a different universe," the Doctor cut in. "There are parallel worlds, Jackie. Every single decision we make creates a parallel existence, a different dimension where—"
"Oh, you can shut up." The Doctor smiled, stepping back to lean against the wall, his arm around Alex's shoulders. "Oh," Jackie sighed. "You look old."
"You don't," Pete smiled.
"How can you be standing there?"
Pete shrugged. "I just got lucky. Lived my life. You were left on your own. You, er, didn't marry again, or...?"
"There was never anyone else." Jackie shook her head. "Twenty years, though. Look at me. I never left that flat. Did nothing with myself."
"You brought them up. Rose and Alex Tyler. That's not bad," Pete jabbed his thumb at the girls over his shoulder, causing the Doctor and Mickey to smile at them fondly as they blushed.
"Yeah."
"In my world, it worked. All those daft little plans of mine, they worked. Made me rich," Pete admitted.
"I don't care about that." Jackie paused. "How rich?"
"Very."
"I don't care about that." She paused. "How very?"
Pete chuckled. "Thing is though, Jacks, you're not my wife. I'm sorry, but you're not. I mean, we both—You know, it's just sort of... Oh, come here." He dropped the gun, and she ran into his arms.
***
The Doctor, surrounded by a shimmering silver forcefield, dashed into the warehouse and grabbed a pair of Magnaclamps before running back out. The group peered in from the doors, seeing the Daleks levitating the Ark between them, out of the warehouse sunroof.
"What are they doing?" Rose mused. "Why do they need to get outside?"
"Time Lord science. What Time Lord science? What is it?" the Doctor grumbled, clearly annoyed he couldn't figure it out.
Alex blanched. "Oh my God..." The others looked at her, confused. "Time Lord science. Multi-dimensional engineering. Bigger on the inside."
The Doctor winced. "I really hope that's not what they meant." He went out into the corridor. "We've got to see what it's doing. We've got to go back up. Come on! All of you, top floor!"
"That's forty five floors up!" Rose protested.
"Believe us," Jackie added. "We've done them all!"
The lift pinged, and the doors slid open, revealing a smiling Jake Simmonds. "We could always take the lift."
***
Alex and the Doctor reached the window of Yvonne's office just in time to see the Ark shooting Daleks out in all directions as it rotated.
"Shit," Alex muttered, her eyes wide with horror.
"I really hate it when you're right," the Doctor told her, his brows drawn together.
"I do too," she agreed, frowning at the legions of Daleks hovering in the skies of London.
"Did the Time Lords put those Daleks in there? What for?" Mickey asked as the others caught up.
"It's a prison ship," the Doctor replied grimly.
"How many Daleks?" Rose inquired.
"Millions." Alex winced.
"I'm sorry, but you've had it. This world's going to crash and burn. There's nothing we can do. We're going home," Pete declared. He took a yellow medallion from his pocket. "Jacks, take this. You're coming with us."
"But they're destroying the city," Jackie frowned.
"I'd forgotten you could argue. It's not just London, it's the whole world. But there's another world just waiting for you, Jacks. And it's safe as long as the Doctor closes the breach. Doctor?" Pete prompted.
The Time Lord turned around, wearing his 3D glasses again. "Oh, I'm ready. I've got the equipment right here. Thank you, Torchwood. Slam it down and close off both universes."
"But we can't just leave. What about the Daleks? And the Cybermen?" Rose asked, gesturing at the falling city below.
"They're part of the problem and that makes them part of the solution. Oh yes! Well? Isn't anyone going to ask?"
Alex rolled her eyes, reading what he wanted in his thoughts. "What is it with the glasses, my dear?" she asked with an unnecessarily British accent, making him grin.
"I can see, that's what. Because we've got two separate worlds, but inbetween the two separate worlds, we've got the Void. That's where the Daleks were hiding. And the Cybermen travelled through the Void to get here. And them lot, one world to another, via the Void." The Doctor paused. "Oh, I like that. Via the Void." He handed Alex his glasses. "Look. I've been through it. Do you see?"
Alex smirked, totally not using the opportunity to check out her boyfriend while she watched the little glitter-like blobs dancing around him. "What are they?"
"Void stuff."
"Like, er, background radiation," she guessed.
"That's it. Stop checking me out and look at the others. The only one who hasn't been through the Void, your mother. First time she's looked normal in her life."
"Oi!" Jackie exclaimed, rolling her eyes.
"But the Daleks lived inside the Void. They're bristling with it. Cybermen, all of them. I just open the Void and reverse. The Void stuff gets sucked back inside," the Doctor explained.
"Pulling them all in!" Alex cheered at the same time as her boyfriend, the pair sharing a high-five.
"Sorry, what's the Void?" Mickey asked, confused.
"The dead space," the Doctor replied. "Some people call it Hell."
"So you're sending the Daleks and Cybermen to Hell. Man, I told you he was good." Mickey and Jake grinned at each other.
Alex smiled up at the Time Lord proudly, taking his hand.
"But it's like you said. We've all got Void stuff. Me too, because we went to that parallel world. We're all contaminated. We'll get pulled in," Rose pointed out.
"That's why you've got to go," the Doctor agreed, wincing as Alex dropped his hand.
"What?" she demanded, hurt flickering in her eyes.
"Back to Pete's world," he continued as if she hadn't spoken. "Hey, we should call it that. Pete's World. I'm opening the Void, but only on this side." He allowed himself to look at Alex, who was staring at him uncomprehendingly. "You'll be safe on that side."
"And then you close it, for good?" Pete checked.
"The breach itself is soaked in Void stuff. In the end it'll close itself. And that's it. Kaput," the Doctor confirmed.
"But you'll stay on this side?" Rose asked, her eyes wide with shock. How could he do that to them? To Alex?
"But you'll get pulled in," Mickey pointed out.
"That's why I got these." The Doctor held up his Magnaclamps. "I'll just have to hold on tight. I've been doing it all my life."
Alex stared at him, her eyes narrowed. "I'm supposed to go?"
He refused to meet her eyes. "Yeah."
"To another world, and then it gets sealed off?"
"Yeah."
"Forever?" She snorted. "That's not going to happen."
The building shook, and Pete sighed. "We haven't got time to argue. The plan works. We're going. You too. All of us."
"No." Alex shook her head, setting her jaw. "I'm not leaving him."
"I'm not going without her," Jackie announced.
"Oh my God," Pete complained. "We're going!"
"I've had twenty years without you, so button it!" Jackie snapped. "I'm not leaving her!"
"You've got to," Alex tried, swallowing back the lump in her throat.
Jackie shrugged. "Well, that's tough."
"Mum..." Alex sighed, her voice shaking. "Look, I had a life with you for seventeen years, but then I met him. And all the things I've seen him do, for me, for you, for all of us, for the whole stupid planet and every planet out there—he does it alone, Mum. But not anymore, because now he's got me. I won't just leave him." While she was distracted, the Doctor slipped a medallion around her neck. Before she knew what was happening, she was stood in the parallel universe. "Don't you bloody dare!" She hit the button on her medallion, and reappeared next to the Doctor.
He glared at her. "Once the breach collapses, that's it. You will never be able to see them again. Your own family!"
Alex returned the glare with full force. "Then I won't have to watch them die!" She turned away, wiping away her tears with the heel of her hand. "I made my choice the second I opened the heart of the TARDIS, the second I changed. I can't just go back and have a normal life and watch everyone I love grow old and die. I am never going to leave you, whether you like it or not, so just tell me. What can I do to help?"
The Doctor took in her determined yet devastated expression and sighed. "Those coordinates over there, set them all at six."
Alex did as she was told, then activated a screen showing the CCTV footage for the building. "We've got Cybermen on the way up."
"How many floors down?" the Doctor asked.
"Just one."
"Levers operational," the computer announced, making the Doctor grin despite himself.
"That's more like it," Alex said tentatively, giving a smile of her own. "The perfect team, yeah?"
The Doctor nodded. "Hope and Glory, Mutt and Jeff, Shiver and Shake."
"Which one's Shiver?" Alex teased.
"Oh, I'm Shake," he assured her, handing over a Magnaclamp. They put them against opposite walls. "Press the red button. When it starts, just hold on tight. Shouldn't be too bad for us, but the Daleks and the Cybermen are steeped in Void stuff." He met her eyes for the first time since she decided to stay. "Are you ready?"
She nodded towards the window, where Daleks were hovering outside. "Yeah, but so are they."
"Let's do it." They activated the levers and grabbed onto the Magnaclamps. Immediately, a bright light split the wall, a strong wind rushing towards it. The Doctor and Alex were pulled horizontal, but the Daleks and Cybermen all around were sucked right into the void.
After what felt like forever, the breach closed itself, sealing off the Void and, with it, the parallel world. In the absence of the alien assault, the room seemed oddly quiet, like the tranquility left in the aftermath of a storm. Alex let go of her Magnaclamp, sliding down the wall to sit on the floor, her eyes wide.
She had always known it would come to this, really. At some point, she would inevitably lose her family, and the Doctor would be all she had left. She had even been prepared to make that choice herself. But making the choice and actually going through with it were two very different things, and it was only the thought that Rose was alive and safe that kept her from collapsing entirely.
The Doctor's hand squeezed her shoulder, and she let out a breath she hadn't realised she was holding. With it came the tears.
Even though letting her go was the only way she could be safe, losing Rose had always been the worst pain she had ever known.
***
On the parallel Earth, Rose Tyler stood on a Norwegian beach as a holographic image of the Doctor and Alex appeared in front of her.
"Where are you?" she inquired, opting to pretend she couldn't see the tears in her sister's eyes, or the redness around the Doctor's.
"Inside the TARDIS," he replied, trying to stay strong for them. But he was just as distraught as Alex. Rose had been like a sister to him as well. "There's one tiny little gap in the universe left, just about to close, and it takes a lot of power to send this projection. I'm in orbit around a supernova." He sniffed. "We're burning up a sun just to say goodbye."
"You look like ghosts," Rose told him, wiping her cheeks as the irony hit her. It started with ghosts and now it would end that way too.
"Hold on," Alex muttered, before toggling a lever. The resolution strengthened.
"Can I—?" Rose stretched out a hand.
"We're still just an image. No touch," the Doctor told her gently, his arm around Alex again.
"Can't you come through properly?"
"The whole thing would fracture. Two universes would collapse."
"So?" both Alex and Rose said at the same time, the girls promptly bursting into tears as they realised just how much they were going to lose.
"Where are we? Where did the gap come out?" the Doctor asked, trying to clear the atmosphere a little.
"We're in Norway."
"Norway, right."
"About fifty miles out of Burgen," Rose specified. "It's called Darlig Ulv Stranden."
"Dalek?" the Doctor echoed, mishearing.
"Darlig," Rose corrected, shaking her head. "It's Norwegian for bad. This translates as Bad Wolf Bay. How long have we got?"
"About two minutes," the Doctor said.
"I can't think of what to say!" Alex sobbed.
"You've still got Mr Mickey then?" the Doctor noted, rubbing the redhead's shoulder.
"There's five of us now. Mum, Dad, Mickey, and... and the baby," Rose replied hesitantly.
Alex's head whipped up to look at Rose with bloodshot eyes. "You're not...?" Her voice broke.
"No. It's Mum. She's three months gone. More Tylers on the way."
"And what about you?" the Doctor asked, before Rose could say more about the sibling Alex would never meet.
"Yeah, I'm back working in the shop."
"Oh, good for you."
"Shut up," she teased. "No, I'm not. There's still a Torchwood on this planet. It's open for business. I think I know a thing or two about aliens."
"Rose Tyler, Defender of the Earth," Alex smiled through her tears.
"Here you are, living a life day after day. The one adventure I can never have," the Doctor mused.
"Am I ever going to see you again?"
"You can't," the Doctor replied softly.
"What're you going to do?"
"Oh, we've got the TARDIS. Same old life."
"On your own," Rose sighed. "I love you both."
"I love you too!" Alex replied.
"Quite right too," the Doctor smiled sadly. "And I suppose, if it's my last chance to say it. Rose Tyler, tha—"
He was cut off as the hologram cut out, leaving him to hold Alex in his arms as she wept. He kissed the crown of her head, wincing as she sobbed. Then, as he looked up again, he froze. "What?"
The woman turned, her wedding dress swishing about her legs. When she saw the Doctor and Alex, she stared. "Oh!"
At that, Alex looked up too, her eyes widening. "Okay, what?"
"Who are you?" the bride asked.
"But—!"
The bride looked around, starting to panic. "Where am I, eh? Where the hell is this place?" she demanded.
The Doctor just stared. "What?"
