Kya: Chapter 3

22:53, 12 February 2023

Kya's last day in the Fire Nation was stressful. The girl had sent Ozai a letter, telling him to meet her outside the palace at night, then she packed everything important into a small bag.

Michi didn't leave her sister's side for the rest of the day even while Kya was writing goodbye letters to her two best friends without mentioning any details. No one should know any details. For their safety.

"Is this goodbye now?" Michi's quiet voice snapped her out of her thoughts.

Gulping down the lump in her throat, Kya nodded slowly. Saying goodbye was harder than she had expected it to be. She engulfed her sister in a tight hug, not wanting to let go soon. She already missed her little sister.

Michi's quiet sniffs were the only sound that could be heard in Kya's dark room. It was already late in the evening and the oldest would soon leave as she still had to meet up with Ozai.

Pulling out of the hug, Kya put her hands on Michi's shoulder. "This is not goodbye for forever," she whispered, afraid of her voice would crack.

Michi nodded and wiped her tears as Kya took a step back and gulped. She didn't want to cry and make her little sister sadder. Taking the two goodbye letters, she handed them Michi. "Could you give them to Iroh and Ursa?"

Michi nodded and took the letters from her sister's hand. "I will," she whispered and pressed her lips together. She knew she shouldn't drag out this goodbye even more. It would only make the seperation harder for both of them.

"Michi, I love you," Kya said and took her bag. Looking at her sister, she smiled sadly as her eyes welled up with tears. "Please take care of yourself."

Michi clenched her jaw and nodded before hugging her sister one last time. "You too Kya," she whispered.

Kya nodded and let out a breath. She opened her door and looked over her shoulder with teary eyes. "We'll see each other again, I promise."

Michi nodded and when Kya left, she pressed a hand over her mouth to silence her sobs.

Kya managed to sneak into the palace's back yard without getting caught and waited for Ozai to join her. The girl had decided that she wanted to talk to him before leaving since the marriage involved both of them equally.

"Kya?" Ozai's quiet voice had her straighten her posture.

She looked at the Fire Prince and let out a quiet breath. Kya had never felt the need to be as formal around the princes as around their father. "Prince Ozai." She quickly bowed her head slightly. "I wanted to talk to you privately."

The prince's heartbeat quickened. He had waited for this moment all day long with good expectations. And now that he stood in front of his crush, nervousness and excitement bubbled up inside of him. He was convinced that she would now confesss her love for him.

"What is it?" He asked, surprising himself with his calm voice.

"I understand how you feel and I wanted to tell you that I feel the same, if not even stronger," she said and gulped. She felt like he deserved at least an explanation as to why she didn't want to marry him.

Ozai tensed not knowing how to respond to that. She was at the edge of confessing and he didn't know if he liked it or if it made him nervous.

"I think you deserve someone who really loves you and not someone arranged. You should decide for yourself who you want to marry and you should go out and find yourself the love of your life."

The prince's heart dropped and he could only look at her. He certainly hadn't expected the talk to take this turn, after all it had started out great. "What?" he breathed out.

Kya gulped and shot him a small smile. "What I want to say is that I understand that you don't want to have an arranged marriage, let alone with me. I feel the same." The girl had been sure that he was in the same position as her.

When there wasn't a response form Ozai, she took that as agreeing and smiled. "Thanks for talking with me. I just wanted to get this off my chest."

Ozai stood there frozen, not knowing how to feel. The only thing he felt was empty and numb. His crush and the woman he wanted to marry had just rejected him after all the persuading he had to do just for her to be accepted by his father.

"Goodbye Ozai," she said with a smlie and send him a wave before disappearing in the dark night.

He sure must be glad that we called it off. She was glad that Ozai had taken the news so well and was understanding.

A heavy burden was lifted off her chest as she made her way out of the Fire Nation and to her rendez-vous place with Hakoda. The heavy feeling was immediately replaced with excitement and happiness. She would soon start her new life.

Ozai however felt his blood boiling. He couldn't accept her rejection and stormed back into the castle. He swore to himself that he would make her his no matter what. Slamming his door shut, he let out a huff not believing that she just left him standing there. He had fought for this marriage to be possible and she just threw it away like it was nothing. She didn't appreciate enough what he did and he couldn't let her go. There were too many people that wanted her to marry them and Ozai couldn't let that happen under any circumstances.

-----

It had been a couple of years since Kya left the Fire Nation behind. Hakoda and her had married soon after she came to the southern water tribe. The tribe immediately accepted her without knowing that she came from the enemy's nation; everyone but his mother didn't know. Kanna still accepted her daughter-in-law and helped her adjust to a different culture while the others thought that the girl was from the northern water tribe.

Her parents were furious when they found out about their daughter's disappearance. They had to report the bad news to the Fire Lord who wasn't very happy about the whole situation. Still, he didn't punish them for that was something out of their control. Her parents had asked Michi for any details, however, the girl stayed silent saying she didn't know anything. After not getting any information from their younger daughter, they sent out a search party but to no avail; Kya left no trace.

Ozai had never moved on from Kya, swearing to himself that he would one day find her and make her his. Being a prince left him with less power than his father but he still sent his own men with each troupe in order to get any information about the girl. His father had arranged a marriage between him and Ursa not even a year after Kya ran away despite his protests. The Fire Lord simply had enough of his son's obsession with Kya and found it to be better if their bloodline mixed with Avatar Roku's. Ursa and Ozai had two children; a son, Zuko, and a daughter, Azula.

Meanwhile Michi had married a highly ranked general just like her parents wanted and expected her to do. She also had a little girl, Mai, just a few months older than her sister's twins.

Kya had three loving children with her husband. Her oldest son of 4 years was bound to be a great chief and warrior just like his father. Sokka admired his father more than everything else in the world and wanted to be just like him despite coming after his mother's looks.

Her younger twins of 2 years were cute little girls who couldn't be any more different from each other. Katara, the older one by five minutes, just looked like a perfect mixture of Kya and Hakoda, while Jasmine, the youngest of her children, looked nothing like her parents. She had completely taken afte Kya's side of the family. With her pale skin and dark eyes and hair, the girl reminded Kya of her dear sister.

Kya stayed in contact with only three people for the remaining time; Michi, Iroh and Ursa. They regularly wrote each other letters and the three of them never said a word to anyone about Kya. The woman still kept the details to a minimum; only telling them about her children and how she's been.

The only time she mentioned details was around the time Jasmine was born. She had told her friends and sister how her daughter Jasmine took exactly after her family's side. But Kya hadn't mentioned her other children in that specific letter.

This letter was later found by Ozai. He had accidentally looked through Iroh's things where the latter had hidden it safely. As soon as he saw who had sent it, he read the whole thing. With the new information, he was sure he would find Kya and bring her back, together with her daughter Jasmine.

Iroh had noticed that Ozai knew something. He immediately told Michi and also wrote Kya a letter to warn her about the information Ozai gained. Kya wrote one last letter to him and her sister, saying that they shouldn't worry as Ozai didn't know enough to find her and that she wouldn't write them anymore to ensure her and their safety.

It took Ozai's men a few years until they found Kya in the southern water tribe. However, as the actual mission was to eliminate all waterbenders, a soldier had killed Kya by mistake. She had told the man that she was the last waterbender. The soldier therefore killed the woman without thinking much about it. When the admiral saw the whole thing he was furious but decided to keep it a secret to save the soldier's life. Due to the mess the situation created, they completely forgot about Jasmine, who had hidden and saw her mother die, protecting her children.

As neither Iroh nor Michi had heard from Kya in years they also didn't know about her death. They didn't know that the last time they saw Kya was right before she ran away all those years ago.

Another few years passed and Iroh joined his nephew Zuko who was just banished and burnt by his very own father. Zuko was sent out to finish an impossible task; to capture the Avatar who had vanished a hundred years ago. Iroh was against the Fire Nation's ideology and wanted to help his nephew get on the right path and become a better ruler than his father. He wanted Zuko to find his own destiny.

But no one would have thought that because of this task the next generation of these old friends and family would reunite again. Maybe that was also destiny.

A/N - hehe, I know it's been way too long. But this is the last chapter of Kya's backstory. I hope you still like it. Don't forget to vote and comment.ย

Are there any Kuroko no Basket fans here because I got an idea for a story and I'm kinda dying to write it. But I don't know when I'll publish it because it's still only a rough idea. But tell me what you think.ย

Stay safe and healthy :)
