Chapter 62

08:14, 29 March 2017

It was the time of year that the kids loved the most, a day all about them. Brayden got up before anyone else and ran into Hannah's room.

"Wake up, Hanny!" He said, trying to shake her awake.

"Go away! I'm sleeping!" She grumbled as she pulled the covers over her head.

"No! I'm too excited!"

"Go be excited somewhere else. It's too early."

"Not on our birthday it's not!"

"It's seven in the morning, stupid." She turned on her side and shut her eyes again.

"I don't care what time it is! It's our birthday today!"

"Shut up for three more hours and then maybe I'll listen."

He scowled at her.

"Hmm." He thought.

He waited a few minutes until she was asleep again. Once she was asleep, he flipped her mattress over and knocked her onto the floor. She growled and ran at him, pushing him into the dresser.

"What is going on in there?" Maureen raised an eyebrow.

They went to check on the kids, opening the door upon reaching the room.

"What is going on here?" Kim asked.

"Stupid head right here woke me up." Hannah pouted and pointed over at her brother.

"Well excuse me for being excited about our birthday today!"

"That's enough you two."

"But mommy-"

"Not another word. Go get dressed."

They did as they were told.

"But what about breakfast?"

"You'll get it."

"When?"

"You'll see."

They drove to the district and walked in. The entire Intelligence Unit along with a large number of patrol officers were all standing around the front desk.

"Happy birthday!" They said when the twins walked in.

"Now blow out your candles you little punks." Trudy said, stepping forward with the cake.

They held hands as they blew the candles out. After a fun filled morning at the district, Sean offered to bring them to school.

Kim grabbed a large, manila folder from the middle drawer in her desk. She made sure no one was looking and took a swab from Erin's computer mouse.

"What are you doing?" Alvin asked as he was coming up the stairs.

"Nothing, why?"

"That sure doesn't look like nothing."

"It's personal business." She put the swab in a baggie and then into the envelope.

"Fill me in."

"Why should I?"

"If you don't, I'll tell Erin you swabbed her mouse."

"You're kidding."

"I'm serious."

"Alright fine. Her real mother is dead, Bunny isn't her mother. I was gonna go to the forensics lab and run her DNA through the system."

"She's going to flip a table if she finds out what you're doing."

"I'm not doing this to hurt her. Maybe her real mother isn't dead and if she's not, I wanna find her. Erin deserves to know."

"What's Adam going to say when he finds out what you're doing?"

"Frankly, it's none of his business."

"Isn't he going to wonder what his wife is doing at the forensics lab?"

"Drop it and kindly get out of my way."

She went in the back way, the envelope tucked under her arm.

"Detective Ruzek, what are you doing here?" The scientist asked when she stepped inside.

"I need a personal favor."

"Yeah anything."

She took the contents out of the envelope and laid them on the table. The scientist examined them and took them out of the bags.

"A DNA test?"

"Yes, a DNA test on Erin Halstead. Previously known as Erin Lindsay."

"What kind of DNA test exactly?"

"Bunny Lindsay isn't her real mother as we all thought. I can't get her to budge or Hank. I know that he knows her real mother. He refused to give me a name, so I was hoping you would be able to help me."

"I will do my best, but I can't guarantee anything."

Kim slid a hundred dollar bill across the counter. "Here's a little fee for your favor."

The scientist picked it up and placed it in her pocket. "Give me an hour."

"You got it."

Ten minutes passed when she heard the door slam, making her jump. It was just another doctor, so she smiled and waved to be nice. But soon after, Adam's car pulled up. He seemed frustrated with something when he walked inside.

"What are you doing here?"

"What am I doing here? What am I doing here?! I should be asking you that question."

"It was a personal matter."

"You could've told me where you were. I started worrying."

"I'm sorry, I was in a rush. I didn't want you finding out because then you would have squealed to Erin."

"What does you being here have to do with Erin?"

"She said her real mother was dead. Hank has an ex girlfriend or wife out there. It was also discovered that he has a third child out there. I want to have the DNA scanned to see if the stories connect. Not that they will, but you never know until you try."

"Hank is not Erin's father if that's what you're trying to get at."

"I never said that. If you opened your ears, I said I wanted to see if anything matched. No where did I say that that was the case."

"It seemed a lot like you were."

"I wasn't!"

"Did you tell anyone you were doing this?"

"No. Al knows because he caught me. Anymore questions?"

"Why would you want to do this?"

"Every child deserves to know who their real parents are, even if one of them is dead. I'm doing her a good deed, I'm sure you would've done the same for me."

"Yeah I would've."

"If you tell Voight, I'm going to hurt you."

"Don't worry, I won't say anything to him."

"You better not."

"I won't."

"Good."

They waited around the hour it took the scientist to run the test. She opened the door and motioned for them in.

"What did you find?" Kim asked.

"You will not believe what I found."

"What was it?"

"You said this was for an Erin Halstead, right?"

"Yes ma'am."

"I ran her DNA in the system and compared it. I tried to see if it would match anyone."

"Did it?"

"It matched to two other people in the system."

"Who?"

"Part of her DNA matches with a Henry Hank Voight and the other half matches one Olivia Benson."
