Chapter 56

02:27, 30 March 2020

Kim wasn't feeling too good the next morning, so she called out of work.

"Are you sure you don't need anything, hun?" Adam asked, with his hand on the door.

"No, I'm fine."

"I love you."

"I love you too."

He headed out to work, the kids waking up just as he left.

"Mommy, are you okay?" Brayden asked.

"Mommy's fine."

"Are you sure?"

"Go get your sister up so you two can get ready for school."

"I don't want to go to school."

She picked him up. "Why not?"

"I don't like it when you're sick."

"I don't like it either, but mama will be fine. Nadia's coming over to spend the day with me, she can take care of me."

"I still don't want to go."

"Don't forget, it's family fun night at your school."

"I want to stay home and take care of you."

"You can't, buddy. You have to go to school and so does your sister."

As she was making them breakfast, a nauseous feeling came over her and she ran into the bathroom. She quickly put her hair up in a ponytail and then began throwing up. Hannah peeked in the bathroom.

"Mommy, are you okay?"

"Mommy's fine, baby girl." Kim said, washing her mouth out and taking a deep breath.

"I'm gonna call daddy and tell him he needs to come home right this second."

"Daddy's at work."

"He always takes care of you when you're sick."

"It was just something I ate."

"If you say so."

The kids finished their breakfast and grabbed their backpacks. "You guys ready?"

"Yes mommy."

When they got to the school, they headed to their classroom and Kim headed into the office.

"Good morning, Mrs. Ruzek."

"Morning."

"Is there something I can help you with?"

"Hannah has a doctor's appointment at eleven, so I'll be back to get her then. I thought I would notify you and leave a note."

"Will she be returning after the appointment?"

"Yeah, it's just a check up and her shots."

"Alright, I'll let her teacher know."

"Thank you."

"Are you feeling yourself? You look pale."

"I'm fine, something I ate must not have agreed with me."

She swung by the district on her way home, despite Hank's wishes. Platt look stunned to see her when she walked in.

"I thought you called out sick."

"I did, I just came by to bring Adam lunch."

"No offense, but you look like crap. Are you sick or something?"

"I threw up a few times this morning, but that was it."

"Did you eat anything for breakfast?"

"I had a fruit salad and a glass of water. Why?"

"Were you feeling sick before or after you ate it?"

"I felt nauseous the second I woke up. Again, why?"

"You know what this might be, right?"

"You're crazy."

"I'm just saying, it could be."

"I'm on the pill. It's not that and I know it."

"By the way, everyone's down in the basement, they're training Shay's temp."

"Oh joy."

Kim walked down the stairs and saw Jay fixing the posters on the wall. He looked at the door when he heard footsteps.

"Hey Kim."

"Hey. Have you seen Adam?"

"Supply room with Erin." He nodded his head.

"Kim, why aren't you home?" Erin asked. "You called out sick."

"I just came to bring Adam lunch."

"Darling, you need to be in bed resting. Not running around and being active."

"I just wanted to bring you your lunch. You forgot it on the kitchen island when you left."

"Thank you."

"You're welcome."

He saw that she was shivering and gave her the sweatshirt he was wearing. "You must be cold."

"It's Chicago, it's always cold here."

"Your forehead is burning. I think you need to see a doctor."

"I do not."

"I'm going to see if Voight will let me out early."

"Nadia will be with me. She can take care of me."

"If I come home and you're still sick, you're going to the doctor. You're going even if that means I have to drag you kicking and screaming."

"Okay okay okay. I'll go back home."

"Not without one of these you're not." He made sure Erin wasn't looking.

"Without a what?" Kim asked.

"Like you don't know." He smiled and then leaned in for a kiss.

She hugged him tight. "I love you."

"I love you more."

"Cut the mushy love fest and let's go, Rebel."Erin joked as she tugged on Adam's shirt sleeve.

"My name is Adam."

"That's not what Platt calls you."

"What does Platt call me?"

"I'm not sure I should tell you." She bit her lip to hold her laughter in.

"What does that woman not call me at this point?"

"HA. You should hear how she talks about you when you're not in the room."

"Don't start with me."

"I'm just yanking your chain."

"Is there anyone in the bathroom?" Kim asked.

"No, I don't think so." Sheldon said.

"Good." She ran in there and started throwing up again. Adam went after her and held her hair back.

"That's it. I'm asking Voight if I can leave."

"NO. For the final time, I will be fine."

She went home so she wouldn't have to hear more of his incessant babbling. Nadia was just pulling in their driveway.

"Hey I heard you weren't feeling the greatest, so I got you some ginger ale, saltines and a couple cans of soup."

"Thanks."

"No problem. By the way, your mom and Adam's mom are here."

"Damn it."

They were sitting on the couch when Nadia and Kim got into the house.

"My poor baby." Maureen hugged Kim and then pulled back. "Do you know what's wrong?"

"No mom, I don't."

"How long have you been feeling like this?"

"Since I got up this morning, how many people feel the need to ask?!"

"We're just worried about you. That's all."

"I feel fine."

She started feeling lightheaded and made another move for the bathroom.

"Something is wrong with that girl, and I'm going to find out what it is."

"What do you think it is?"

"I'm going to find out. She's in denial if she's sick and never likes to tell me what's wrong."

"I'm guessing Christopher was the same way?"

"Are you kidding me? She's a mini Christopher. He was always like that back when we were dating. He never liked to tell me when he was hurt or sick. He never wanted me to worry."

"Like father like daughter."

"You can say that again."

After Kim was out of the bathroom, she curled up on the couch with a blanket.

"Do you want some pain medication?" Her mother offered.

"No, no medication." She grabbed the remote an turned on Family Guy. "I need laughs to get my mind off this sickness."

The rest of that morning, she felt nothing but sick. By around lunchtime, the sickness had subsided and she felt normal again.

"That was weird." She whispered to herself as she was fixing lunch. The bus dropped the kids off and they came running inside.

"Are you feeling better mommy?" Brayden asked.

"Mommy is feeling much better." She smiled.

Adam strolled in, talking on his cell phone.

"Okay doc, I'll tell her. Thanks. Bye." He pressed the end button and plugged his phone in to charge.

"Why were you talking to the doctor?"

"Before you go AWOL on me, that wasn't your doctor. That was Hannah's pediatrician."

"What about me?" Hannah put her hands on her hips.

"She said your appointment went well and you are healthy. But-"

"But what? Please no more shots. Those hurt!" She whined.

"Your blood sugar wasn't where it should've been. Have you been eating right?"

"I don't think I should be skipping meals?"

"No you shouldn't be. Have you been doing that?"

"I've been skipping lunch at school."

"Why?"

"It tastes out of date and dry."

"Why don't you ask mommy or me to make you a lunch?"

"You guys are always rushing in the morning, I didn't think you'd have time."

"We'll make time. Do you want to take cold lunch to school from now on?"

"Yes daddy."

"We don't want you to get sick. If you don't eat, you can get very very sick. I don't think you want that."

"No."

"Mommy and I don't want that either."

"I see you're feeling better, mommy."

"I'm feeling much better, I guess it was the rainy weather making me feel sick."
