Chapter 38
22:49, 28 March 2020Meanwhile, at the district, things were calm and cool. Erin was cleaning up Kim's desk as a favor while she was away. There were family pictures of her and Adam with the kids, with family, along with their wedding photo. After she was done cleaning up the desk, she sat back down at her own and leaned back in the chair. It had been a long day and she was exhausted.
"Erin, you hungry?" Julie asked her.
"Eh, a little."
"Dinner's on me if you want."
"What about Alec?"
"He's working a late shift at the hospital tonight. Emmy and Liam are with my mom."
"What do you say to a drink?" Erin held up a twenty.
"I'm paying."
"I have the money."
"I invited you, so I'm paying. Take it or leave it."
Erin laughed. "Okay, fine. You're paying. But can I at least pick the restaurant out?"
"Don't start." Julie said, getting up and putting her sweatshirt on.
Erin laughed again. "You win again." They headed downstairs.
Trudy stopped them. "Hey, was that it for everyone upstairs?"
"Yep." Julie said.
"Can I get more than a one word answer, Willhite?"
"Yes, we were the last two upstairs."
"That's better. I just wanted to know so I can lock it."
Julie and Erin left, heading for a place called Wildfire. That place was known as the best steak and seafood place in town. Erin made a face at the ingredients in some of the dishes. Julie just sat there, trying not to laugh.
"You're not pregnant, are you?"
"NO. No no no no. One kid is enough for Jay and I. He's already terrified of the fact that she'll be a teenager in three years. I'm done having kids."
"Don't you want a boy someday?"
"Jay's a big kid, he'll do for now."
The waiter came by and took their orders. After he was gone, they resumed their conversation.
"How's Will liking Chicago Med so far?"
"Oh he loves it."
"That's good. What end of the hospital is he in?"
"He's a surgeon."
"Oh awesome, just like Alec."
"He did mention something about Alec."
"What did he say about him?"
"That he's just like Jay."
"Ha. That's a good one."
In the middle of their dinner, Julie pulled out her phone and called Kim on FaceTime. It took her a couple minutes, but she answered.
"Hey guys! What's up?" She answered with.
"Chilling. Eating, the good stuff." Julie laughed.
"Are you guys at Wildfire?!"
"We are." Erin told her.
"Lucky bitches."
"Still in the air?" Julie asked.
"Yeah, we got about four more hours till we land in Venice."
"Bring me back pasta! And more pasta!" Erin joked.
"Nah, I think I'll keep that all to myself." Kim laughed.
"By the way, your parents are showing Brayden and Hannah pictures from when you and Adam were kids."
"Damn it, mom!"
"But yeah, they're adjusting to not being with you guys as of today."
"Give them hugs and kisses goodnight from us, please?"
"Of course." Erin smiled.
"Bring me back a hot Italian guy!" Julie yelled, softly.
"Julie! You are a married woman!"
She laughed once more. "I know I know. I was only kidding."
Erin's walkie talkie went off.
"Bank robbery in progress. Hyde Park Bank. Suspects are armed and dangerous. Requesting all nearby officers."
Erin lifted it up close enough so she could speak. "Detectives Halstead and Willhite are on their way."
Julie overheard and her fork fell to the floor.
"What's going on guys?" Kim wondered.
"Bank robbery. We gotta go. Call us when you land."
"Stay safe."
"We will." Julie ended the call.
Adam turned to Kim. "What was that about?"
"There's a bank robbery in progress."
"Oh damn."
"I hope nothing happens to them."
"Nothing will."
Erin and Julie got into the car and raced to the bank, which was barricaded by other patrol cars and officers. Hank ran up to them.
"One of you needs to go in there and be the negotiator."
They both looked at each other for a minute.
"What about Hostage Negotiation? Why aren't they here? They should've been here by now."
"We radioed for them and they're over twenty minutes out. We don't have that kind of time."
"I'll go." Julie said.
"Are you crazy?!"
"I know what I'm doing."
She put on a bulletproof vest and entered the bank. The suspect had hostages and he was holding a gun to a little boy's head. He didn't hear Julie come in, but when he caught sight of her he grew angry.
"Drop the gun and kick it over to me. Your backup gun, too! Or he dies!"
"It doesn't have to be that way." Julie held her hands up.
"I said drop the gun and kick it to me! NOW!"
Julie set the gun down and kicked it over to him.
"Let the boy go, you don't have to do this." She tried to reason with him.
"Shut up!" He screamed.
"Okay okay..."
"If you make an attempt to try escaping, I'll kill him, you, and everyone else in here. Do I make myself clear?"
"Yes sir."
"Now sit on the floor and keep your mouth shut!"
"Hank, just look at her in there." Erin was shaking.
"Jules said she knows what she's doing."
"I hope she does."
A few hours passed. Kim pulled up in her car, Adam in the passenger seat.
"What are you guys doing here? Aren't you supposed to be on your honeymoon?" Kevin asked them.
"That can wait." Adam said, putting on a vest.
"You two didn't have to give up your honeymoon for this. We could've handled it." Antonio looked over at them.
"With something like this, I knew she would be the first to volunteer to go in. No one would be able to stop her."
Suddenly, two gunshots were heard and everyone grew silent.
