Chapter 23
08:29, 1 April 2017Back at the district, Hank and Antonio were interrogating Adrian. Adrian was sitting there with a huge grin on his face.
"Where do you get off...WHERE do you get off kidnapping children?! Especially newborn babies?!" Antonio shouted at him.
"It's how I get my kicks. I'd say I'm rather talented at it."
Hank slapped him across the face.
"You can mess with my city, you can mess with me, but when you mess with a detective in my unit-"
"No need to finish your threat."
He kicked the chair over and stood over Adrian.
"You don't scare me."
"Oh I don't?"
"No, you don't."
Hank pulled out a gun and aimed it at Adrian's forehead.
"Want to say that again?"
"I'm not scared of you."
Antonio grabbed him by the shoulders and shoved him up against the wall.
"You're not getting away with this! How would you like to spend a night in the cage?"
"I want my lawyer."
They both dragged him down to the garage and threw him in the cage, locking the door.
"I'll get out of here. You just watch."
"Shut up." Antonio said, walking back upstairs with Hank.
The next morning, Kim walked in to find Adrian sound asleep on the floor in the cage. She walked over to it and kicked it, waking him up.
"Oh Kim, you look lovely today."
She rolled her eyes. "I didn't ask for a compliment."
"How are those kids of yours?"
"Don't you EVER mention my children again, do you hear me?!" She yelled.
"Loud and clear."
She went to walk away when he asked her to listen to something.
"What is it? I need to get upstairs."
He pulled a gun out and pulled the trigger. She was thrown to the ground from the force of the bullet and he managed to escape.
"What the hell was that?" Julie heard the gunshot from upstairs.
"That sounded like a gun shot." Erin said, covering her mouth.
"Wait a minute...where's Kim?" Antonio asked.
"NO!" Adam nearly flew down the stairs as he made his way to the basement.
Sure enough, there was Kim laying in a puddle of blood. Her eyes were closed, leading everyone to thinking she was dead. Adam fell to his knees and wrapped her in his arms. His clothes were blood soaked, but he didn't care. He couldn't hold the tears back as he took her face in his hands.
"I love you. You can't die on me. I need you. The kids need you. All of us need you. Please..."
She placed a hand on his cheek, before her eyes closed and her arm went limp. The ambulance arrived within in minutes. Out of it came Sylvie and Gabby.
"Antonio, what the hell happened?!" Gabby asked, looking up at her brother.
"I don't know. I was upstairs when it happened...if only I had stayed down here an extra few minutes."
"It's nothing you did. It was Gish."
All of them then noticed the cage was empty.
"Where the hell is Gish?!" Hank yelled.
The other districts were notified of Gish's escape and were ordered to keep watch for him. Two more EMT's hoped out of the back of the ambulance to help get Kim inside.
"We need to hurry! She's going into cardiac arrest!" Sylvie yelled, hoping into the drivers seat and they took off.
"Adam, go. She needs you there." Sean told him.
"I don't think I'll be able to bare seeing her like that. I just don't think I can do it."
"I think she would want you there."
"I...I just can't. Will you go?"
"You got it, man." Sean headed down to the hospital and pulled in just as she was being brought into the emergency room.
"Are you of any relation to the victim?" A doctor asked.
"No, I'm not. But I'm her fiancé's partner at work."
"You will have to stay out here. Can we get the name of the fiancé please?"
"Yeah, it's Adam Ruzek."
Sean was pacing around the waiting room, worried sick. The door rushed open and in came Kim's parents.
"Mr. and Mrs. Burgess?" He asked.
"Is she okay?!"
"The doctors won't tell me anything because I'm not family. Maybe they'll tell you something?"
"Oh gosh I hope so...my baby!" Her mother was crying so hard that she couldn't even see. Her husband went over to the reception desk. The receptionist looked up.
"Name please?"
"Christopher Burgess. I'm the victim's father."
"Her condition is currently unknown at this time."
"Are you kidding me?! My daughter was shot and that's all you're going to tell me?! You need to tell me what her condition is and I want to know now!"
She said she knew nothing and he sat down in a huff.
"Chris, she'll be okay. I know our little girl."
"Maureen, it's not that easy. She's my little princess. I don't want her to die..."
He hung his head down and tears started falling. Hours passed with no word. Adrian was found, arrested and handed over to Major Crimes. The rest of the unit, along with Camille, Trudy and Sheldon, arrived at the hospital. Will emerged from the entrance to the exam rooms. Everyone looked up.
"Is she okay?" Maureen asked him.
"We don't have enough of her blood type..."
"I'll give her some of mine." Sean stood up.
"What's your blood type?" Will asked.
"A Positive."
"That's her blood type. Come on." Sean followed Will into an exam room.
"How much do you need? I'm willing to give all that I can."
"We're going to need about two pints."
"I just want her to live."
Two pints was taken out of Sean and brought into the operating room. After the surgery, Will headed back out to the waiting room, blood soaked scrubs and all.
"Please...tell me she's alive." Adam pleaded.
"She's going to be okay. We saved her just in time."
"Can I see her?"
"Of course. Come with me." Will lead Adam to her room and then left so they could be alone. Her upper right shoulder was all wrapped in surgical bandages and her right arm was in a cast. She had a breathing tube in her mouth and was hooked up to all kinds of machines. He sat down next to her bed and took her hand in his.
"I'm here."
Her hand was limp, but he knew she was in there. She opened her eyes and looked at him. He kissed her forehead after he wiped the tears away. She was unable to speak because of the tube, so she sat there and listened to him.
"Sean donated two pints of blood that saved your life. It's all because of him that you're still here."
She squeezed his hand.
"I love you too." He smiled.
A short while later, her parents came in to check on her. While her mother was talking with her, her father asked to talk with Adam. They stepped out into the hallway.
"I really hope you don't think this is my fault, sir."
"I know it wasn't your fault. You would die for her."
"I would. If only I could have taken that bullet for her..."
"She's alive and she's going to live."
"May I ask you something?"
"Anything, what is it?"
"Will you give me your blessing?"
"For what may I ask?"
"To marry your daughter."
Christopher was in a bit of shock.
"Have you already given her a ring?"
"Yes sir, I have. There's nothing I want more in my life than to make her my wife."
"You're a good kid, Adam. I know I can trust you to take care of my little girl."
"I will. She's everything to me and I'll love her for the rest of my life. Her and those two babies are my whole world."
"She's in good hands."
Her breathing tube was removed that afternoon and she was able to talk again.
"Wha...what happened?"
"You were shot." Adam told her.
"I was shot? By who?"
"Adrian Gish. He's been caught and he'll never bother us again."
"Am I dead?"
He laughed. "No. You're alive and well."
"Where's my ring?!" She panicked. He lifted up her left hand and showed her it was still there.
"I think you should rest." He covered her up with a heated blanket.
"Will you stay with me? Please?"
"You know I will."
"Good." She smiled as he leaned in for a kiss.
"You know, I thought of the perfect place for our wedding."
"Oh yeah? Where's that?"
"The camp. It could be an outdoor wedding."
"Oh my gosh...I would love that."
