"𝐘ah, Kim Na-hee!" Na-yeon yelled, annoyance evident in her voice as she turned around again to glare at her friend.
"Wait for me!" Na-hee replied, her mouth stuffed with a donut while her other hand clutched a banana milk drink. She squinted her eyes happily as she savored her treat.
"Why are you always so hungry?" Na-yeon asked with an exasperated huff, her arms crossed over her chest.
"That's a dumb question" Na-hee retorted, finishing her donut with a satisfied grin before taking a sip of her drink. She smiled brightly at Na-yeon, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "I'm hungry. Besides, you told me you didn't want any."
"I was going to save that!" Na-yeon protested, gripping the straps of her backpack tightly as they finally fell into step with each other.
Na-hee let out a refreshing "ah" after taking a long sip of her banana milk. "Oh, my bad! Hehe" she said, a playful grin spreading across her face.
It was rather chilly this morning, and Na-hee had layered her school uniform with her favorite blue jacket, which perfectly matched her lively personality. The jacket was adorned with fun designs, and her hair was let down, secured with a blue bow that complemented her outfit at the back of her hair, adding a touch of flair.
"Why are you so grumpy in the morning, Yeoni?" Na-hee asked with a teasing tone, her eyes glinting with mischief.
"I'm not grumpy!" Na-yeon insisted, pouting slightly, her cheeks puffed out in defiance.
"You are, though" Na-hee stated matter-of-factly, taking another sip of her drink, her laughter ringing out like music in the crisp morning air.
After finishing her drink, Na-hee tossed the empty carton into a nearby garbage bin as they passed by. *Perfect timing* she thought happily, a satisfied smile spreading across her face. Today, she was feeling particularly cheerful, especially with the excitement of tomorrow looming ahead.
"By the way, where did you get that chicken yesterday?" Na-yeon asked, wrapping her arms around Na-hee's shoulders as they walked side by side.
"Why? You liked it, didn't you?" Na-hee replied, her eyes sparkling with happiness.
"Yah! What if I do?" Na-yeon shot back, a hint of defensiveness in her tone.
"But you told me it was salty" Na-hee recalled, shrugging her shoulders playfully.
"Yeah, but it's still tasty!" Na-yeon insisted, her expression softening as they continued their conversation.
As they walked, Na-yeon and Na-hee sspotted Nam-ra walking confidently ahead of them. Na-hee's eyes lit up with excitement.
"Nam-ra!" she called out, but Nam-ra continued walking, seemingly lost in her own world.
"Class prez!" Na-hee shouted again, her voice ringing out, but Nam-ra remained oblivious, her earbuds firmly in place as she walked away.
Na-yeon tapped Na-hee's shoulder, prompting her to turn around. "Hee, Nam-ra doesn't pay attention to anyone" she said, a hint of pride in her voice, as if she were boasting about her own opinion towards Nam-ra.
"She pays attention to me!" Na-hee replied, shrugging off Na-yeon's comment, her optimism unwavering. "She was probably just wearing her earbuds!" she added cheerfully.
Na-yeon felt a twinge of annoyance at Na-hee's unwavering interest in Nam-ra. "Whatever" she muttered, rolling her eyes as they continued walking peacefully.
Suddenly, a group of students came running towards the school, nearly colliding with Na-hee in the process.
"That scared me!" she exclaimed, playfully placing her hand over her chest as her heart raced.
Just then, Gyeong-su, one of their classmates, shoved past Na-yeon, calling out, "Hey, Na-hee!" as he waved before catching up with the others.
"That shithead!" Na-yeon exclaimed angrily, her hand instinctively moving to her arm as if to brush off the encounter.
"What was that for?" Na-hee shrugged, accustomed to the never-ending antics and playful rivalries among her friends. She couldn't help but giggle at the chaos, feeling hopeful.
A sudden buzz from her phone in her skirt pocket jolted Na-hee from her thoughts. She quickly pulled it out, her brow furrowing in anticipation. She was expecting a message from their self-defense class coach, but her mood shifted dramatically when she saw a notification from Gwi-nam. A video had been sent.
"What's his deal now?" Na-hee muttered to herself, glancing back at Na-yeon, who was busy adjusting her sleeves with a frown.
Na-hee with a mix of curiosity and apprehension, Na-hee pressed play on the video, her heart racing. *I swear, if this is another meme, I'm going to explode.* she thought, bracing herself.
As the video began to play, Na-hee's eyes widened in shock. Her breath quickened as she watched the scene unfold. One of the female student that Gwi-nam and his gang had targeted was on the ground, her top missing as she desperately covered her upper body with her hands. Tears streamed down her face as Gwi-nam and his friends laughed cruelly at her expense. The sight made Na-hee's blood boil.
It was clear they were inside a construction site, the gritty surroundings only adding to the grimness of the situation. Na-hee felt a surge of anger welling up inside her. She turned to look at Na-yeon, who was still fuming about Gyeong-su's earlier shove.
"Na-yeon!" she called out, her voice urgent. Na-yeon quickly turned to face her, her expression shifting to one of concern as she noticed Na-hee's sudden seriousness.
"What is it?" Na-yeon asked, her brows knitting together.
"You go ahead, I have to go somewhere" Na-hee replied, determination etched on her face.
Na-yeon's expression changed, confusion mingling with worry. "Where are you going?" she asked, curiosity filling her voice.
"It won't take long. See you in class!" Na-hee said, already turning on her heel and taking off in a sprint.
"YAH! KIM NA-HEE!" Na-yeon called after her, but Na-hee was already racing toward the construction site, her heart pounding with a mix of adrenaline and resolve.
She couldn't just stand Gwi-nam and his gang harrasing a female student, everything they are doing is getting out of hand.
Na-hee then carefully made her way inside, brushing off the leaves that were slowing her down. As she entered, she could hear voices arguing. Her gaze landed on Su-hyeok, who was locked in a heated chat with Myeong-hwan, his expression radiating pure hatred.
"Don't act all holier-than-thou, you hear me?" Myeong-hwan spat at Su-hyeok, annoyance dripping from his words. The first person to notice Na-hee was Gwi-nam.
"Look, Kim Na-hee is here" Gwi-nam announced, his eyes gleaming with mischief as they all turned to her.
Na-hee squinted her eyes in anger, holding her breath in disbelief at the scene unfolding before her. She walked over to Su-hyeok, who looked at her with a mix of worry and curiosity.
"You need to fuck off" she said, scoffing at the tension in the air.
Su-hyeok stepped closer to Na-hee joining her, his voice low and firm. "You need to grow up" he added, his eyes narrowing slightly. The others fell silent, the atmosphere thick with tension.
Su-hyeok turned to Na-hee, concern etched on his face. "What are you doing here?" he whispered urgently.
Na-hee didn't respond, instead, she tilted her head toward the frightened female student nearby.
Su-hyeok's gaze shifted to the two students. "You two, get outta here" he ordered, his tone brokering no argument. "That goes for you too, Na-hee" he added gently, trying to make her go away from the escalating conflict.
Without hesitation, Na-hee moved toward the female student, shoving Gwi-nam aside as she helped the girl gather her scattered clothes, determined to shield her from the hostile stares of the others. As the three of them prepared to leave, Myeong-hwan's mocking voice cut through the tension.
"Sure, get out of here. You might be safe" he sneered, halting their progress.
Na-hee shot him a glare that could pierce through steel. "Are you all always going to be like this?" she retorted, disbelief lacing her tone.
"Go" she urged the two students, pushing them toward the exit with urgency, while Su-hyeok stayed close, offering silent support.
"You look very sexy in this" Gwi-nam chimed in suddenly, a smirk plastered across his face. "Should I send this to your mom?" he added, his eyes glinting with malice as he winked at Na-hee. A wave of disgust washed over her as his gang erupted into mocking laughter.
"What kind of weirdo makes friends with an old lady?" Chang-hoon scoffed, adding fuel to the fire. Na-hee felt her grip on the female student loosen as she instinctively let go.
"I can't go" the girl murmured, fear evident in her voice.
"It's okay, you can do it" Su-hyeok reassured her, his tone gentle yet firm.
She shook her head vigorously. "It's not okay. If I leave now, it will be much worse tomorrow" she insisted, her voice trembling with the weight of her conviction. The reality of their situation loomed over them, and Na-hee knew they had to stand their ground.
Na-hee tried to soothe the girl, her voice gentle and reassuring. "You're stronger than you think. Don't let fear consume you" she said, glancing at the two boys beside her.
Myeong-hwan, however, turned to Na-hee with a look of annoyance. "Yah, what's with you? Do you want to take her place too?" he retorted, letting out a sharp whistle, completely unaware of the two glaring eyes fixed on him.
Su-hyeok, sensing the tension, turned around and stepped protectively in front of Na-hee. "Hey, don't drag Na-hee into this" he said firmly, his voice low but steady.
Chang-hoon couldn't help but snicker at the scene unfolding before him. "What, are you her boyfriend now?" he teased, a mischievous grin spreading across his face.
"What a pair you make" he added, his tone dripping with sarcasm.
The atmosphere grew thick with unspoken words, as Na-hee felt a rush of warmth at Su-hyeok's defense, while Gwi-nam irritation simmered just beneath the surface.
"Don't act tough, Chang-hoon. You just joined the bullies to take a shot" Na-hee stated, her voice steady but laced with annoyance.
Chang-hoon felt his anger boil at her words. He stood up abruptly, his voice practically rising as he clutched his phone tightly in his hand. "You slut!" he yelled, embarrassment and rage flooding his face.
"It's true, right?" Na-hee shot back, her eyes narrowing as she met the furious gaze of Chang-hoon.
He was getting closer, closing the distance between them until he was just a meter away. Na-hee sensed the danger in his approach, the tension in the air was serious.
Steeling herself, she quickly shifted her weight and raised her leg, delivering a swift kick that sent the phone flying out of his hand. It hit the concrete floor with a sickening crack, shattering into pieces. Gwi-nam and his gang stood there in shock as they process the scene.
"Yah! My phone!" Chang-hoon yelled in disbelief, his anger escalating as he rushed to retrieve his phone.
Na-hee inhaled deeply, realizing that she had just acted in self-defense.
Suddenly, Gwi-nam, who had been watching the scene unfold, shoved Chang-hoon away from him in frustration.
"What are you doing? You fucker." he shouted, his eyes darkening, sending a dangerous glare.
"Take that as a warning" Na-hee told them, flicking her hair back with confidence. The self-defense class she had taken wasn't for nothing.
"You bitch-" Myeong-hwan started to say, but he was quickly interrupted by Su-hyeok.
"Enough." he said, his voice firm as the group fell into an uneasy silence.
Gwi-nam's eyes were fixed on Na-hee, his hand casually resting in his pocket. He let out a mocking laugh. "You think you can just get away with that?" he taunted, pulling his phone out of his pocket.
"Do you want me to send your video to your mom?" he smirked, his eyes glinting with malice as he directed his gaze at the female student.
Na-hee's eyes narrowed in anger, her heart racing. "I can't go" she said, glancing at Su-hyeok and Na-hee, who looked equally concerned for her.
Na-hee felt a wave of sadness for the girl caught in the crossfire of their confrontation.
"Do you want me to break your phone too, Gwi-nam?" Na-hee shot back defiantly, her voice steady despite the fear bubbling beneath the surface.
Gwi-nam raised an eyebrow, intrigued by her boldness. "I'll send it before you can break it." he replied, a smirk plastered across his face, clearly enjoying the power he held in the situation.
*That son of a bitch.* Na-hee thought bitterly, frustration boiling within her.
"Besides" Gwi-nam continued, leaning in slightly, "I like it when I take your time." He winked at Na-hee once more, and she instinctively stepped back, feeling disturbed by his predatory demeanor.
In that moment, Su-hyeok stepped up protectively in front of her, his stance firm and unwavering. "Back off, Gwi-nam" he warned, his voice low but filled with authority.
Na-hee struggled as she and Su-hyeok walked together. They couldn't convince the two, which made Na-hee feel disappointed in herself. If she just had the power to kick Gwi-nam right now, she would have done it. She didn't even get the chance to learn their names. With a heavy sigh, she adjusted the strap of her backpack, feeling the weight of her disappointment.
Na-hee sighed again as she felt her hopes go to vain. Su-hyeok, noticing her distress, leaned closer as they walked. "Are you okay?" he asked, concern etched on his face. Na-hee looked up at him, forcing a small smile.
Na-hee looked up at him, forcing a small smile. "Kinda... it's just really disappointing that we couldn't do anything" she admitted, her voice tinged with frustration.
Su-hyeok nodded in understanding. "I know... but let's just hope things will get better soon" he replied, offering her a charming smile that warmed her heart.
Just then, On-jo came running towards them, her hair flying loose behind her as she hurriedly approached. "Na-hee!" she called out urgently, her eyes wide with excitement. Na-hee's face lit up at the sight of her friend.
"Good morning, On-jo!" Na-hee exclaimed.
Su-hyeok, sensing the shift in mood, gently tugged Na-hee to continue walking, leaving On-jo momentarily dumbfounded by his presence. Once they entered the school building, On-jo sprinted after them, her determination evident.
"Na-hee" she called again as they climbed the stairs, stepping in front of them to block their path. The two stopped and turned to face her.
"Hey, On-jo, join us!" Na-hee said with a smile.
"What?" Su-hyeok asked, slightly confused by the sudden interruption.
On-jo, undeterred by his presence, continued, "If you have time, come to the roof after lunch." On-jo said. Na-hee then turned to look at Su-hyeok.
"Why? I don't fight anymore." Su-hyeok replied, shaking his head.
"Yah, what makes you think I want to fight you? Besides, I didn't mean you." she said, her gaze shifting to Na-hee.
Na-hee blinked, not knowing anything. She pointed at herself, and On-jo nodded. "Oh? Why me?" Na-hee replied, laughter bubbling nervously in her throat.
"See you later!" On-jo called out as she quickly dashed up the stairs. In the process, she tripped, and Na-hee flinched at the sound of her stumble.
"Are you okay, On-jo?" she asked, concern flooding her voice. Just as she was about to rush up to help, On-jo stood up, brushing off her embarrassment, and continued with a huff.
Meanwhile, Su-hyeok struggling to contain his laughter. Na-hee elbowed him playfully. "What?" Su-hyeok said, breaking into a grin.
"That was weird." Na-hee remarked, shaking her head in amusement.
On-jo made her way inside the classroom and went towards Cheong-san and his friends, who were gathered around the table. She shoved Cheong-san's bag towards him in annoyance as he contained his laughter. On-jo then went to her seat and sat down next to I-sak, her face in distress.
"Oh no, what do I do?" she muttered to herself, feeling overwhelmed.I-sak, overhearing her, turned to look at her friend with concern.
"What? What is it?" she asked On-jo, seeing her expression.
"I don't know..." On-jo replied with a heavy sigh, glancing at I-sak. "I'll tell you later." she added, trying to gather her thoughts
I-sak raised her eyebrows. "Tell me what?" she asked eagerly, hugging her pillow tightly as she leaned closer, ready to hear whatever was troubling her friend.
Na-hee and Su-hyeok entered the classroom, and Na-hee inhaled the air, letting out a bright smile. She made her way to her seat, humming softly to herself, and gently placed her bag down next to Nam-ra, who was studying as always.
Nam-ra felt the seat beside her shift and glanced over at Na-hee. Na-hee smiled and waved, knowing that a simple "good morning" would go unheard due to the earbuds in Nam-ra's ears. Nam-ra nodded in acknowledgment, a subtle way of returning the greeting, before refocusing on her neatly organized notes.
On-jo, sitting a few desks away, had her gaze fixed on Na-hee, a small smile playing on her lips. When Na-hee caught a glimpse of On-jo staring at her, she returned the gaze, but On-jo quickly looked away, a faint blush creeping onto her cheeks.
Just then, the door slid open, and in walked Lee Na-yeon, her eyes scanning the room in search of her best friend. A smile broke across her face when she spotted Na-hee at her seat, but her expression faltered as she noticed Gyeong-su sitting at her table.
"Hey!" Na-yeon yelled, her voice cutting through the chatter of their classmates and drawing everyone's attention.
"Whoa, what the hell?" they murmured in surprise.
Na-yeon marched over to Gyeong-su, her annoyance filling the air. "Get out of there, you stink!" she exclaimed, glaring at him with fiery intensity.
Gyeong-su stood up from her table,"Oh, okay. My bad" he said, turning to face Na-yeon while wiping the surface of her table with his sleeve. "What's the big deal?" he added, a smirk forming on his lips.
Na-yeon quickly grabbed her bag from the table, her frustration boiling over. "Cut it out! You're so dirty!" she yelled, her voice echoing in the classroom.
"Hey, what the hell?" Gyeong-su retorted, taking a step toward Na-yeon, but he was pulled back by Cheong-san, who had intervened.
"Hey, just let it go." Cheong-san told him, his arms firmly holding Gyeong-su back.
"What is your problem?" Wu-jin chimed in, Na-yeon then hits Wu-jin with her hand away. The classroom buzzed with whispers and murmurs, the drama unfolding like a scene from a lively school play.
Na-hee felt a wave of disbelief wash over her as she looked at her best friend, Na-yeon, who was visibly annoyed. "Yah, Lee Na-yeon, Gyeong-su did nothing wrong" Na-hee said trying to ease her friend's frustration, she moves carefully towards Na-yeon.
Na-hee wrapped her arms around Na-yeon in a comforting embrace, but Na-yeon pulled away slightly, still fuming.
"Didn't you see that? He was practically all over my table!" Na-yeon whispered angrily, her voice dripping with sarcasm, but as Na-hee held her close, she began to feel a bit more at ease.
"Sorry about that, everyone! Please, continue with what you were doing!" Na-hee called out cheerfully to the group, trying to lighten the mood.
Na-yeon, still annoyed, swatted at the boys who dared to come too close to her seat, her frustration evident. With a gentle sigh, Na-hee guided her back down into her chair, hoping to bring some calm back to the chaotic scene.
Just then, Mrs. Park entered the room with a commanding presence. "Hey, you punks! Come on, guys, take your seats! Move it!" she instructed, her voice firm yet playful.
The students quickly scrambled to their desks, the sound of chairs scraping against the floor filling the air.
"Hi there!" Mrs. Park greeted with a warm smile, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm.
"Hello!" everyone replied in unison, a mix of excitement and relief evident in their voices. Some exchanged glances, while others fidgeted with their notebooks, eager to see what the day would bring. The atmosphere buzzed with anticipation as the class settled in.
"Has anyone seen Hyeon-ju? No one?" Mrs. Park started, and the whole room fell silent. She looked around. "None of you tried to contact her at all?" Curiosity filled her voice.
Joon-yeong raised his hand. "We cleaned the science lab together yesterday, but we haven't seen her since." Joon-yeong answered Mrs. Park as he cleared his throat, adjusting his glasses.
Mrs. Park nodded at his answer. Na-hee had her arm resting on her chin. *Come to think of it, Hyeon-ju wasn't with her pathetic group earlier* Na-hee thought as she shrugged.
"Alright, if anybody hears from Hyeon-ju at all, please let me know" Mrs. Park said as the class agreed. "But first of all, please hand in your phones." Mrs. Park finished as the whole class groaned in annoyance. Mrs. Park shook her head, unimpressed with her students.
Na-hee then felt her other pocket and cringed as she realized she had forgotten to bring her fake phone. She groaned. She and the others stood up to line up as they handed in their phones one by one. Na-hee took out her real phone this time and gave it to Mrs. Park. She felt sad that she had to give her real phone away and gripped it tightly as Mrs. Park did the same.
"Na-hee, you can let go now" Mrs. Park said in a sarcastic manner. "Oh, sorry, Mrs. Park" Na-hee replied as she returned to her seat feeling down, she let out a sigh.
After everyone had finished handing their phones to Mrs. Park, they took their seats as well. "Alright, are all the phones in here?" Mrs. Park asked as she carefully looked at the phones in front of her. She then pulled out her phone and texted the group chat.
Na-hee heard a phone buzz with a notification in front of Nam-ra and then she hid her laughter. Typical Dae-su. Everyone turned their heads to look at Dae-su, catching him in the act. But he dismissed it by looking at Nam-ra.
"Class Pres, was that yours?" he asked, and the room burst out with laughter at his obvious lie, finding him amusing. Na-hee then rolled up a piece of paper and gently slapped the back of Dae-su's head for being caught.
"You should've silenced it, Dae-su" Na-hee told him, her voice lowering.
"Yeah, Na-hee's right you're a dumbass." Wu-jin nodded in agreement his eyes finding Na-hee.
"Dae-su, bring your phone here. I heard that." Mrs. Park said in disbelief, but she couldn't contain her laughter.
Dae-su stood up to hand their phones with a frown as he and I-sak were caught, then after they returned back to their seats, feeling ashamed for being unable to hide their phones from Mrs. Park.
Mrs. Park held On-jo's phone in her hand as she looked at On-jo and smiled. "Oh, On-jo, this was your phone from last year. Please hand in the real one" Mrs. Park said loudly, showing the phone to everyone.
On-jo looked at Mrs. Park, her face flushed with embarrassment, and the class erupted in laughters once again.
Dae-su leaned in toward Wu-jin, a mischievous grin spreading across his face. "She's dumber than I am," Dae-su joked, his voice low enough to avoid drawing Mrs. Park's attention.
Wu-jin chuckled softly, trying to stifle his laughter Na-hee shook her head at Dae-su, she knew On-jo had potential. Na-hee admired her quiet determination, which often went unnoticed by others.
As the class resumed, the atmosphere shifted back to normal. Students whispered and exchanged glances, but the lesson continued smoothly, just like any other regular day. The sound of chalk against the blackboard filled the air, and the faint rustle of paper accompanied by Mrs. Park's voice, creating a familiar rhythm that pulled everyone back into focus.
Na-hee rested her chin on her hand, her mind drifting as she daydreamed about what she would have for lunch, maybe a steaming bowl of ramen or perhaps just a plain lunch? It was a typical Na-hee moment, her thoughts wandering far from the classroom. She could still hear Mrs. Park's voice, though it faded into the background.
"Does anyone want to interpret that?" Mrs. Park asked, her tone firm as she tapped her hand against the board, scanning the room for a volunteer. Suddenly, the atmosphere shifted, students began to pretend they were busy, some burying their faces in their textbooks while others avoided her gaze, desperately avoiding eye contact with Mrs. Park.
Mrs. Park's gaze landed on Nam-ra, a smile spread across Mrs. Park's face. "Class President, how about you?" she asked, her voice brightening the room.
Nam-ra stood up without hesitation, her posture exuding poise. "It's true that we all have some sort of prejudice; we all have different preconceived notions about one another" she answered, her voice clear and articulate. Mrs. Park nodded appreciatively, feeling satisfied with the response.
"Thank you, Nam-ra," she said as Nam-ra gracefully took her seat again.
Na-hee felt a proud sigh escape her lips, grateful to be seated next to the top student. Nam-ra's intelligence and confidence always inspired her. Just then, Mrs. Park's gaze shifted to another corner of the room. Na-hee followed her line of sight and spotted Su-hyeok, who was completely not listening, chatting with his seatmate, a mischievous grin plastered on her face.
*Oh no, Bare-su is getting called* Na-hee thought sarcastically to herself, rolling her eyes. She could already imagine the playful reprimand that awaited him, a familiar scene that often played out in their classroom.
"Bare-su, what do you think about Nam-ra's answer?" Mrs. Park asked Su-hyeok loudly, her voice cutting through the chatter in the classroom.
Everyone turned to look at Su-hyeok, who was completely unaware of the spotlight now shining on him. He blinked a few times, his expression shifting from confusion to an embarrassed grin as he realized he had been called out.
"What's with 'Bare-su' anyway?" Mrs. Park pressed, raising an eyebrow in playful curiosity.
"It's because Su-hyeok doesn't like to wear socks, so he stinks! I can even smell it all the way over here!" Dae-su chimed in, swatting the air dramatically.
The room erupted in laughter, the sound echoing off the walls, creating a lively atmosphere that filled the air with energy.
"She's absolutely correct" Su-hyeok admitted, a sheepish smile spreading across his face as he shrugged, clearly unfazed by the teasing.
"What's her absolutely correct answer then?" Mrs. Park challenged, crossing her arms and leaning forward slightly, a playful glint in her eyes.
"Uhm..." Su-hyeok hummed, his brow furrowing as he struggled to recall what Nam-ra had said. The class erupted into a chorus of playful mimicking, echoing his "uhm" in exaggerated tones, their laughter ringing throughout the room.
Just then, the classroom door slid open with a soft creak, and a shocked gasp rippled through the students. All eyes turned toward the entrance. The unexpected arrival instantly shifted the mood, whispers began to circulate. Na-hee leaned forward in her seat, her heart racing and her eyes went wide.
