Chapter Ten

06:01, 30 June 2018

Heather McNamara  found herself stepping onto the porch of The Chandler Household. She sucked in her breath with a dry lump in her throat. She brought her hand up to the door and knocked softly. Within seconds a lady wearing a red knitted sweater answered the door.

"Heather?" The woman seemed surprised.

"Uh, yes." She nodded looking down.

"Please, come in." Mrs. Chandler backed away from the door and opened it fully, gesturing her in.

Mac stepped in and bit her lip taking a look around the room.

"Take a seat. Would you like anything to drink? Coffee?" She spoke as Heather sat down in the living room. The room was covered in red.

"No, I'm alright. Thank you though." Heather glanced down the hallway to see a familiar figure. And I'm sure you can guess who it is. She blinked quickly before being cut off by Mrs. Chandler.

"I want to ask why you're here but your appearance says it all. You miss her and you have questions." She said moderately fast.

"Why? Why did she do this? She had a huge life to live, she had so much and then she threw it right away. Then Kurt and Ram followed right along into her footsteps." She huffed in a small voice.

"I don't know. I wonder the same thing every night. I really wish I could give you answers but I can't. You can take a look in Heather's room. Maybe you can solve this puzzle that most of us can't solve." She chuckled.

"Thank you, Mrs. Chandler." She stood up and made her way to Heather's room. Mac opened the door and was greeted with a rush of cold, dry air. Her scent lingered around the room as the two stepped in.

"Heather." Heather Chandler spoke out. she walked closer towards the girl in the yellow blazer.

"I'm sorry about all of this but you're just in my head." She said sternly but still uncertain.

"God, you're stupid. Heather, I'm not just in your head." She brushed past Mac, placing her hand on her chin and propped it up.

"No." She gulped.

"Sweetie, yes. You keep denying everything, you keep running away from everything. Soon Heather will be walking right over you, if she already hasn't. Soon you'll be buried right next to the three of us." Heather whispered the last sentence in her ear.

"Heather, are you alright? You're looking a bit pale." Chandler's mom asked.

"I-I'm okay."

"You're not okay, I'll get you some water." She began walking out of the room.

"No, no. It's alright, I'm fine. It's just, I-I uh nevermind."

"Heather, sit down. What is it?"

She sat down at Heather's vanity. "Did you not realize anything was up?"

"What do you mean?" She leaned against the door frame.

"How did you not know that Heather needed help? I mean, you're her mother. You should know her the best." Mac stuttered while speaking.

"She seemed fine. She seemed happy as always. She wore her scrunchie with pride and that was it. We talked a lot but it never came to my mind that she was feeling down. And then one morning I walked into her room and my heart dropped. My daughter was lying there dead." Mrs. Chandler had tearing forming, her eyes were red.

"I'm so sorry. I-I'm-" Mac walked over to comfort her but she moved away.

"You're not sorry. You want to seem like you care but you were one of the kids that drove her over the edge. We both made mistakes and we both contributed to her death. At least I cared about her. I know that you hurt her at times."

"As her mother you're supposed to be caring and supporting. And I didn't hurt her, she hurt me. I let every comment and every remark she made slide because I knew that she'd say sorry. Some days she didn't sorry but that's not the point. The point is you're supposed to see that your daughter is hurting and you're supposed to help her because it may be too late. And sadly, it was too late. No one could save her, not even her own mother. I should be leaving now, it's late." Heather stood but straight and marched right out of that house. She wasn't confident but she had skills. Cheerleading skills.

Mac snuck into her house around 10pm to find her mom and her new boyfriend, David.

"Where have you been?" Melissa got up as quickly as she could with a wine glass in her hand.

"I was at, um, Veronica's. We have a project due tomorrow."

"That's still no excuse, y'know I raised you better."

"But it was very important,"

"Heather. It's not an excuse, you were supposed to be here three hours ago. You didn't tell me where you were going, you didn't tell me when, you didn't tellme anything. You can't keep doing this."

"Mom, I'm sorry." She fumbled over to the stairs.

"Saying sorry doesn't make it okay. I wanted the three of us to have dinner and of course you ran off."

"I want you and dad to be together, I want Heather, Kurt, Ram to be alive and I want life to be perfect!" Heather yelled, well she thought she yelled it. In reality it was more of a whisper. ~~~~~~Hello,
