Chapter 6: Newt's POV
21:14, 5 December 2023Everyone gathered around the box, hushed whispers floating around the glade. Mira stood next to Newt, silently laughing. Newt gave her a look. Why is she laughing? Newt wondered. He was completely puzzled by her and Ivory. They never seemed fazed by anything, and they never seem to take anything seriously. Instead, they made jokes about everything. Now, he wished Mira would try to be a bit more serious.
He turned his attention back to the box as it came closer, its rattling echoing through the Glade. Newt's mind raced, trying to figure out why the box came early. The only thing he could think of was that, whoever sent them here, decided to break the cycle. And for some reason, that made him worried. Like in doing so would ruin everything.
A loud clank! announced that the box was here. Newt and Gally pulled open the doors, Newt's thoughts spinning out of control. He dropped down into the box and looked around. He saw crates and other stuff that was usually in the box, thinking that maybe it was some sort of test. Then his eyes spotted some black hair behind a pile of ropes and boxes. He moved toward them, trying to stay as quiet as possible, so he wouldn't scare whoever was behind there. He pulled back the ropes and froze. It was a girl. He heard whispers above him as people tried to get a look
"Bloody he**," Newt muttered. He wasn't that surprised that it was a girl, after meeting Mira and Ivory. But he was surprised that she came up in the box. From what Mira and Ivory had said, they came in from the maze.
"Newt, what do you see?" Thomas asked. Newt looked up at him and frowned.
"It's a girl," he said. Newt watched as the rest of the boys exchanged looks of surprise
"Four Greenies in less than a week?" Clint said, frowning. Newt saw Mira roll her eyes
"How many times do I have to say this?! Ivy and I have been here for nearly a month!" She huffed, annoyance in her voice. "And we're not Greenies. The girl is."
Newt was about to say something to stop them from arguing when Minho spoke up.
"Is she breathing?" He asked. Newt turned to the girl and bent over her body. She twitched a little, but other than that she didn't seem to be moving.
"I think she's dead." He stood up, eyebrows furrowed. But why would they send us a dead body? A ripple of surprise spread across the group as what he said settled in. Suddenly Mira jumped down into the box and smiled.
"Nah, she's just asleep," Mira said, moving next to the girl and crouching down. Newt watched as she placed a hand on the side of the girl's neck and kept it there for a few seconds before removing her fingers. "She's got a pulse, it's just slow."
Newt placed a hand on his chin and thought for a few moments. He needed to figure out a way to get the girl out without hurting her. They usually just grabbed the greenie and pulled him up, but the girl was asleep, and he wanted to get her without any cuts or bruises. He was wondering if maybe he could make a sling of some sort when Mira spoke up.
"Hey Blondie, get down here. The girl has something in her hand" she told him. Newt sighed and shook his head. He wished Mira would stop calling him that. Kneeling beside Mira, he saw that the girl had something clutched in her hands. He pried open her hand and saw that it was a piece of paper. He snatched it and opened it. The paper read:
She's the last one. Ever.
Newt frowned and looked at Mira, who was reading the note over his shoulder
"What does it say?" Minho called, Mira looked up at him
"Says that you boys are weird and that she was sent here so Ivy and I can have a friend," she called, a smile on her face. Newt let out a small laugh and stood up so he could hand Thomas the note
"It says she's the last one... Ever," he told everyone. Surprised whispers floated around the group as Thomas looked over the note. Suddenly Mira jerked towards the girl as she gasped and Newt turned to see what happened. The girl had woken and was looking around, then her eyes landed on Thomas.
"Thomas," she said, then she fainted and fell back to the floor. Newt stared at her for a second, shocked. No one here remembers anything but their name, but the girl somehow remembers Thomas. Newt glanced up at Thomas, trying to see if maybe he remembers the girl, but Thomas looked just as confused as Newt felt. Mira frowned and turned to Thomas, then back at the girl
"I'm assuming remembering anything but your name never happened?" She asked, her tone serious. Newt looked at her and nodded, not noticing the way Mira's brow slightly narrowed. Suddenly, Gally jumped into the box and sent a glare at Mira, then at the girl.
"Now do you think I'm overreacting?" Gally asked, his tone challenging anyone to argue. Which of course Mira agreed to.
"Shut up Eagle-brow, we don't talk to idiots.' Mira snapped, glaring at him. Newt had enough experience to know that a fight was about to start if he didn't step in. Standing up, he put himself in between both of them and raised his hands.
"Mira, stop insulting eagle- Gally! The last thing we need is a fight." He looked up at Gally who was glaring back at Mira. He started to talk, but Mira cut him off.
"Sorry, Blondie. I don't obey your rules. Besides, me and Ivy only mess with those who annoy us. And this one," she pointed to Gally, "is number one on our list." Gally growled and jumped into the box, heading for Mira, but Newt pushed him back, wishing Mira would just agree for once. Why are girls so bloody difficult? he wondered. He glanced between Gally and Mira.
"Why don't you go wake up Ivory? I'm sure she'll want to hear about the new greenie," he said, pleading that Mira would get the hint. To his dismay, she only shook her head.
"No can do. Ivy told me to only wake her up only if someone died, and the girl is still alive. But if you really want me to get her, I could kill Eagle-brow over there and say the girl did it." She placed a hand over her knife with a smirk that was not at all amused. Gally growled, but Newt gave him a stern glare.
"Ok, Mira, not helping. Gally, why don't you go start cutting wood?" A plan was beginning to form. Gally cocked his head questioningly.
"Why do we need wood?" He asked, his voice sharp. Newt pointed to the girl.
He leaned forward and whispered to Gally. "We'll do a bonfire to distract everyone." Gally frowned but nodded. Newt let out a sigh of relief and turned to Mira, who was grinning mischievously.
"Why are you grinning?" Newt asked. Mira cocked her head. "A bonfire won't distract them," she crossed her arms again. "It'll just remind them that a weirdo is here." Newt gazed at her curiously. He was sure only Gally could hear him. But Mira heard all of it.
"How did you hear that?" Mira dropped her grin fast and stuttered a moment before answering.
" Uh... It's a small box" she mumbled, and before Newt could say anything, Mira climbed out of the box, leaving Newt to ponder her abilities. What else were Ivory and Mira not telling him?
A little while later, Newt and Minho had gotten the girl out of the box and they had taken her to Jeff. Now they stood in the room as Jeff looked over the girl, Mira had strayed in a couple of minutes ago and was now staying quiet as she fingered her knives
Something's off about those two... Newt thought, but he quickly pushed that thought out of his mind when Jeff stood up.
"Jeff, what's going on?" he asked, stepping forward with crossed arms "What's the matter with her? Why won't she wake up?"
Jeff held up his hands and shrugged.
"Hey man, I got my job the same way you do," he told them, placing his hands on his hips. Newt rubbed his chin as he studied the girl, she was sent here in a coma, what use was she? Mira turned towards Thomas and pointed a finger at the girl
"Do you recognize her?" she asked, raising an eyebrow. Thomas shook his head quickly, a little too quickly.
"No," he told them, not looking at the girl or them.
"Really? Because she seemed to recognize you." Mira said. Newt watched as Mira frowned and leaned forward, studying him. Thomas shrugged, looking extremely nervous
"What about the note?" he asked, nodding at the paper in Newt's hand.
"We'll worry about that later," Newt said, crossing his arms. He sensed that Thomas was trying to steer the subject away from him, but if this girl recognized him, then they needed to figure out how.
"I think you should worry about it now," Thomas said, trying to convince Newt. But he shook his head again.
"We've got enough to deal with at the moment,"
"He's right, Newt," Mira said, surprising him. This is a first. "If the box isn't coming back up, how long do you think you guys can last?"
"No one said that. Let's not jump to conclusions," Newt told her, frowning as he thought for a moment. "Here's what we're going to do. We're going to go about business as usual, the last thing we need is everybody freaking out. We'll just wait until she wakes up and see what she knows. Somebody has gotta have some bloody answers around here."
There was silence as everyone studied the girl, each thinking of different reasons as to why she was sent up. None of them good.
Newt looked up as he heard Thomas start to move towards the door.
"Where are you going?" he asked. Thomas looked at him and told them.
"Back into the maze." Then walked off as if he just said "I'm taking a walk in the woods"
Newt looked at Minho and a silent conversation passed between them before Minho ran out after Thomas.
Newt looked back at Mira who was examining the note Newt had put down earlier. Her mouth moving slightly as she re-read the words.
"This doesn't make sense." She mumbled, practically to herself. She dropped the piece of paper on a table next to her and looked at Newt. "As much as I hate to admit it, Eagle-brow's right. This girl is bad news."
Newt sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose, hearing Jeff leave behind him.
"What do you mean?" He asked, everything feeling wrong. Mira shrugged and vaguely waved a hand in the girl's direction.
"It is kinda Thomas' fault this is happening. First, he comes up. Then Ben gets stung during the day. Then he survives the maze, which no one has done before.""Yeah, but you and Ivory did." Newt pointed out. But Mira shook her head.
"Barely," Mira told him, rubbing the back of her head with a strange expression on her face. "But that doesn't change the fact that when Thomas got here, everything changed. And now the girl is here."
As she said that, Newt turned to look back at the girl, feeling extremely confused.
"But we can't accuse this girl of something she hasn't done yet." He explained, and Mira nodded her agreement.
"We can't, but that won't stop Gally from trying too."
"What are you saying?" Newt asked, wondering where Mira was going.
"I'm not saying anything, it's what you decide to do that affects everyone. You're their leader. And I'm sure they'll follow you in what you decide." She told him, walking towards the door. She paused right before she left and looked back at Newt. She opened her mouth to say something, but she stopped and shook her head, closing her mouth before leaving without saying anything.
Newt stood there for a few minutes, trying to figure everything out. He looked out a side window and saw Mira as she headed into the woods, noticing the way she looked back over her shoulder before going in. Probably looking out for Gally, he thought as he looked away and grabbed the paper from the table. Not even looking at it, he shoved it in his pockets and walked out the door, seeing a few gladers glance at him as he passed. But no one stopped him as he made his way to the Wall. Newt ran a hand across all of the names they had carved, and some they had crossed. He came to Ben's name and guilt rushed through him. Mira's right, Newt thought. Everything started going crazy once Thomas arrived. But Newt didn't agree with Mira on Thomas being the reason. It seemed that blaming Thomas was the only thing the girls and Gally could agree on. Letting out a sigh, Newt walked back towards the homestead, keeping an eye out for Mira. She and Ivory were the first to survive a night in the maze, and he wanted to see if they had noticed anything that might explain everything that was happening. He got to the homestead, sitting down at a tree next to it, letting his head rest on the trunk. Why did everything go crazy as soon as Newt had to take charge?
Looking around, he noticed Thomas and Minho, along with Frypan, Winston, and Ivory, running toward the maze. He suppressed a sigh. He should have known that Thomas would convince Minho to check out the maze with him. Hoping he could get a few minutes to rest, he closed his eyes. Within a minute, Newt had fallen asleep.
