Chapter 7

01:01, 11 July 2013

Draco's POV:

I had listened in on Harry's conversation with Hermione.

Yes, I know that it was a horrible thing to do, especially now that we were going to be sharing a house, and there needed to be trust between us. But I couldn't help it! I had just been walking past his room when I heard the mudbl- muggle-born's voice coming out of his room. And I had to listen in; he was talking to another person from the wizarding world, right after we had agreed not to! I had to listen in to make sure that he didn't say anything about me, at the very least.

So yeah, I listened in. And to my complete surprise, he didn't say a single word to Hermione about me or anything that might give it away. To be honest, I was feeling kind of bad that I had made this deal with him; it was okay for me, because I didn't really have any close friends (except for Crabbe and Goyle, who didn't really count as friends - and one of them was dead, anyways)... but Harry had so much that he was leaving behind; Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, Ginny Weasley, Neville Longbottom, Luna Lovegood, Seamus Finnigan, Cho Chang, Hannah Abbot, Lavander Brown. He seemed to be on good terms with, if not friends, with everyone... except for me.

I was beginning to realize just how selfish I had been when I made that deal with him. I mean, he had suggested it... But that could have just been him being nice, and trying to help me.

Harry had been silent for a while, so I guessed that either him or the mud.. muggle-born had cut the connection. I went back downstairs, and a couple minutes later he came down, too.

"I'm going to go get some groceries." he announced, glancing at the empty kitchen.

I bit my lip, wanting to ask if I could come (so that I could have a better idea of what it was like to be a muggle), but I didn't want to be rude.

Harry started putting on his shoes, so I finally just blurted it out. "Um, can I come with you? Just so that I'm not, you know, totally helpless if I ever have to go there myself."

He actually smiled. "Sure. I think there's one just down the road, so we can walk. It probably wouldn't be a good idea to apparate, with so many muggles around."

"Right." I slid into my own shoes and then followed him out the door. We set off down the road, but pretty soon the silence became sort of awkward. I sort of wanted to talk to him about how I had overheard his conversation with Hermione, but wasn't sure how to bring it up.

Finally I just said it. "I, er, overheard you talking to Hermione earlier."

Harry looked at me quickly. "Sorry. I know that we agreed not to contact anyone, but I had to explain it somehow..."

"No, it's fine. I'm glad that you got to explain it, at least a little."

He nodded. "Do you want to call anyone, just to say goodbye or something? Because I'd be okay with it."

I thought about it. Who would I want to talk to? Definitely not my parents; I had already told them that I was leaving, and I didn't want to talk to them anyways. Crabbe was dead (not that he was much of a conversationalist anyways), Goyle never talked either, and I had never particularly liked Pansy, who seemed to think that we would get together, despite me constantly telling her that I had no interest in her. That was it, really. I was beginning to realize just how small my social circle was.

"Nah, I'm fine."

He nodded, and then pointed to a building just a couple doors down. "That's the grocery store."

He led the way into the store. It was huge... well, at least I thought it was. I had nothing to compare it to. All my life all the shopping and cooking had been done by the house elves, so I wasn't sure what a normal-size grocery store would be.

Harry got a shopping cart, and started down the aisle, throwing in fruits and boxes as he went along.

"Did you do this a lot, as a kid?" I asked, watching how efficiently he did it.

He smiled sheepishly. "Yeah. I did most of the shopping and cooking for my aunt, uncle and cousin."

It was only then when I began to realize how different our backgrounds really were. He was basically a slave as a child; the same thing house-elves were to me. Then there was me, the rich brat who never had to do anything and would be helpless in the real world. I decided that it was time for me to learn.

I took the cart from him. "Then it's my turn." I looked around the aisle. We seemed to be in the grain section, and were surrounded by bread and crackers. I grabbed the first loaf of bread I saw, and then got out of that aisle, Harry following me. I looked at the signs- fruits, meats- and then turned towards the candy section.

I felt my eyes widen as I took in the selection. I had never been allowed many sweets as a kid; my parents had always been worried about how it would affect my health. But now I had my own money, and there seemed to be thousands of different kinds... I was in heaven.

I put in some Malteasers, lifesavers, gummy bears, M&M's, Tootsie Rolls, jelly beans, gummy worms, mentos, a couple Crunch bars, and Reece's peanut butter cups. Harry watched me, with an amused expression on his face.

"You like candy, huh?"

I gave him my 'no, really?' look, and turned back to the sweets.

He rolled his eyes. "Let's go before you waste all your money."

"One more?" I asked.

"Fine." he said.

I turned back to the shelves, realizing that we were actually getting along. I grabbed a couple of Scor bars, and them we headed back to the actual food sections. We got some cereal and milk, some supplies for sandwiches and some chicken for the next day's dinner.

Finally we went down an aisle that didn't seem to have any food, just entertainment items like movies, books and magazines. Harry stopped at a magazine that proudly proclaimed: "Exclusive Interviews With One Direction!"

"Oh, they're hot." I said, looking at the five faces plastered on the front. Then I blushed, remembering that Harry didn't know I was gay. Luckily, he didn't seem to pay to much attention, just nodded absentmindedly and added it to the cart. I looked at some of the... movies, I think they were called. Most of them looked pretty cheesy, but some of the colorful cartoon ones really appealed to me. Maybe it was just my lack of a muggle childhood that made me eager to see the Disney movies, but they looked really good. I added a couple to the cart, which by now was overflowing.

Harry, too, seemed to notice this. "Let's buy this before we get too much."

We split the cost and carried the bags home. There were ten of them... Six of which were filled with candy. When we got back to the house, we put all the food away, and them stared at the pile of candy that we put on the table. It covered the entire surface.

"Oops." I said.

"Well, we better start eating it." Harry said, opening a huge bin of gummy bears and grabbing a handful. He then flipped open the One Direction magazine that he had bought. I read over his shoulder, trying to decide which one I liked best. The one called Harry Styles was pretty hot... But so was Liam.

"Which one's your favourite?" I asked Harry, glancing at the boys again.

"I don't know, probably Niall."

"I like Harry. And Liam." I announced. Again, Harry didn't really seem to notice how this basically screamed that I was gay, too, so I stopped worrying about it. And that's how we spent the next half hour, reading a magazine about the boy band.
