Double the Payne (One Direction FanFic)

18:35, 17 November 2021

I pop out of bed with a groan. I walk to my tiny bathroom in my equally tiny flat. I groan and change. I'm not a morning person. I throw up my dirty blonde hair and do my makeup. I put on some bronzer on my lightly tan skin and a layer of mascara over my dark brown eyes. I don't wear a lot of makeup. I check my calendar app. August 2. 27 days until my 19th birthday! I throw myself onto my motorcycle and ride off to the concert arena. No, I do not sing. I work the sound booth and we are holding a concert today so I have to be early for the sound check. Working there is pretty cool. I've met a couple of famous people, but none of them were my style of music. We haven't booked P!NK yet...

I walk into the arena and get straight to work flipping switches and making sure things are working properly. The boy band will be here soon for sound check. All I know is that it's a boy band, which means my ears will be bleeding by the end of the night....

I scurry around for the next few hours, keeping everything in check. Before I know it's time, 5 boys around my age come in with some security guards. Obviously, this is the band, so I look around for the stage manager, Kimberly. Naturally, she's never on time so she isn't here. I roll my eyes and walk up to the band.

"Hello, we will start sound check in a few moments. The microphones are set up so go ahead and take your positions." I say, double checking things on my clipboard as I talk.

"Okay, thanks...." One says, dragging out the last word, noticeably expecting my name.

"You're Welcome." I respond, acting clueless and walking to the sound board. They go up onstage and get set with their microphones. I press a few buttons and their voices ring through the arena. I sit back, happy that everything is working. They finish up their songs as I finish setting up the sound. I routinely walk out of the sound booth and go to the entrance to go get some coffee before the show. Unfortunately, there are already fans covering every square inch around the arena, making it nearly impossible for me to get out. I groan and turn back inside. I go to walk to the backstage area where the coffee maker is. I prefer Starbucks but black coffee will do. I pull out my phone and go through Facebook while I walk. I hear footsteps so I stop to avoid a collision.

I look up and have to do a double take. There is a boy in front of me. But, what is remarkable is our similarities. He has the same color hair as me and the same exact eyes. His eyebrows furrow and I realize that mine have, too. His skin tone matches mine, also.

"Uh, hi?" I say, a bit quietly just in case he is a figment of my imagination or there is a weird mirror or something in front of me.

"Hi...." He responds. Oh my gosh. He's real. My eyes go wide.

"Hey... uh...." I say. He looks just as confused as me. Wait, how would I know that? I just met him!

"Um, Hi I'm Liam Payne, and you are?" he says. Payne? Oh my gosh.

"I'm Jenna, Jenna Payne." His eyes go wide.

"Payne? P-A-Y-N-E?" He asks.

"Yep..."

"Well, that's weird." he mutters. I nod in agreement.

"Um, do you mind me asking, who's your father?" I ask.

"His name was Geoff. But my parents divorced so I stayed with my mum." he says.

"Mine, too. I went with my dad... who is coincidentally named Geoff." I say.

"What's your mum's name?" he asks.

"Karen."

"Okay, this is officially crazy." He states. I can tell by his reaction that his mum's name is Karen, too.

"Are you... err, real?" I ask. He laughs.  A blonde boy comes running up behind us.

"Hey mate!" He yells. He slows down and looks from Liam to me, puzzled.

"The fans finally cloned you?" He asks Liam.

"No..." He responds and looks back to me. "Does that answer your question?" he asks. My mouth drops.

"Oh my gosh..." I mutter.

"Wait, am I missing something?" The blonde asks.

"Nope, we're as clueless as you." Liam responds. The boy glances from Liam to me again and comes to a conclusion.

"Mate, you have a twin!!!" He announces gleefully.

"What?" I ask.

"Well, that does make sense.... We look alike, we have the same last names, and our parents have the same names..." Liam concludes.

"Hold up, this is crazy. My dad never mentioned any siblings..." I intervene on their insane idea.

"True, my mum never mentioned another sister.... let alone a twin." he adds.

"But it's a bit much to all be a coincidence." The blonde intervenes.

"Okay, you know what? I'll call my dad and get this settled." I say. I take out my phone and dial his number. The phone rings. And rings. And rings. Until my dad's voice machine rings out.

"Hello, you have reached Geoff Payne. If it's Jenna, I'm sorry I haven't called you yet. I'm busy. If it's anyone else... well leave a message." His recorded voice says. I roll my eyes. He's always working.

"Hey, this is Jenna, obviously. So, call me back as soon as you get this message cause I have a really important question. Oh, and by the way, it's pretty bad that you can take the time to record an apology but can't take the time to call your own daughter." I say into the phone and click end. I look up.

"Uh, he didn't answer..." I say, now aware of the fact that they had heard me sass off at my dad.

"I'll call my mum." Liam says, taking out his phone. I turn to the blonde boy, not wanting to eavesdrop.

"Uh, hi. I'm Jenna." I say. He looks at me cautiously.

"I'm Niall. Can I ask you a question?" He asks.

"You just did." I say. He chuckles.

"I meant another one."

"Okay, sure."

"Are you just some random fan who wants our attention?" he asks seriously. I laugh.

"No way. Honestly, I don't know who you guys are. I work the sound booth in this arena." I say. He seems to be looking for any signs of me lying.

"Okay." He says, seeming to believe me. "Then, this is really weird. Do you think that there might be any slim chance that you guys may be long lost twins?" he asks.

"It's a really long shot. But, my dad never has talked about siblings or my mum, so I wouldn't know." I respond.

"Okay, bye." Liam says. He hands me his phone. "She wants to talk to you." he says.

"Uh, okay..." I say and put the phone up to my ear.

"Hello?"

"Hello, dear! Is this Jenna?" A woman says.

"Um, depends on who's asking and why." I say.

"Well, this is Karen Payne. I am Liam's mother. As to why, because you may or may not be my daughter."

"Uh, okay, yes this is Jenna."

"Oh my dear!" She exclaims. "I cannot believe this! Shortly after I had twins, Geoff and I divorced. We sorted out the legal stuff and he took you, saying that he needed a Daddy's girl. I can't believe that we found you!"

"Wait, so, Liam and I are twins???" I say in astonishment.

"Yes, dear, you are. And I am your mother. You must visit and meet Ruth and Nicole!! Those are your sisters and they will be ecstatic to meet you! I am ecstatic to see you again... Oh dear, I shouldn't keep you any longer. Do you have a phone? What is your phone number? Do you text?" She says excitingly.

"Um, yeah I do. My number is ***-***-****." I say.

"Great, darling! I will text you soon! Good bye, sweetheart! It was fantastic hearing from you!" She says.

"Uh, yeah, you too. Bye Kar- err, mum?" I say.

"Bye bye!" She says. I press the end button and hand the phone back to Liam. Niall looks at us.

"What did she say?" He inquires.

"Apparently, we're...." I say.

"Twins." Liam finishes. Niall's eyes pop out. Then he starts to grin.

"Haha! I was right!" he exclaims. I chuckle.

"Yes, yes you were." I say. His face changes.

"I've got to go tell the other lads!" He exclaims and speeds off. I check the time on my phone. 5 minutes until showtime.

"Okay," I say, taking on my rarely used responsible tone. "Five minutes until show time. I have to get back to the sound booth and you probably need to get ready. Kimberly should be right next to the stage." I say.

"Oh, shoot. I need to get dressed. Uh, so I'll see you later! Maybe we could meet up after the show?" he asks.

"Yeah, sure. Bye!"

"Bye!"

I rush up back to the sound booth. Thankfully, I only had to press a few buttons to flick on the sounds and everything. The concert begins so I take out my phone. I knew now that my twin brother is famous, so I decided to learn more about him. Yes, that is just a nice way to say I stalked him.

Over the next few hours, I learned a bunch of stuff about him. Such as, he has a phobia of spoons. Apparently, he's scared of the germs on them.... Okay... Well, I have a phobia of forks, but my reason is much more logical. When I was little, I accidentally stabbed myself with my fork. I still have the four little holes on my wrist to prove it. Ever since, I have not touched a fork. Heh, dinner time at the Payne household would be interesting.
