Evans.

Lucy's family name and one of the only reminders she has of her biological parents. When she tells people she's adopted, their first question is why she hasn't changed her last name.

When she gets married, she'll change her last name. So why not change it now? Because she's a sophomore in high school and she wasn't formally adopted by Melissa McCall until she was in middle school. Before that, she had been in and out of foster homes and care. They weren't all bad, but none of them were home.

Lucy was only a few months old when her parents died. A car accident, according to police reports. The reports also say her father was recklessly driving that night with her mother in the passenger seat. Supposedly, they were arguing and lost control of the car. She doesn't remember them, so she can't say whether or not that's true. But when she looks at the pictures of them that the police gave her, the ones that were with the rest of their stuff that she inherited, she just doesn't see a couple who argues that badly. They look so loving and happy.

She got a lot of things from her parents. Pictures and documents, mostly. She wears her mother's necklace every day. She has some of her old sweaters and one of her father's jackets. A collection of notes and pictures from when they were in high school. They won prom king and queen their senior year. From the notes, she can see just how in love they really were.

One thing stands out though. A letter, addressed to her, but not until she's eighteen. She hasn't read it yet; she's chosen to listen and wait two more years.

But having that letter, it makes her wonder if they knew they were going to die.

Tomorrow marks the first day of sophomore year. Lucy's alarms were already set, and her bag was packed. Now all she needed to do was get a good night of sleep, right after she finished braiding her hair.

She and Scott were the only ones home right now. Melissa, her adoptive mother, was working another late shift. Now that Lucy was sixteen and finally had her license, she had begun working as well to help around the house. Melissa refused to take the money she offered, wanting her to save it for gas and college.

In her nightstand, she had three separate envelopes, each filled with cash. One was for bills and the house, which she was keeping secret since she wasn't supposed to save money for that. Another was for her college fund and the last one was for car emergencies.

One really important thing Lucy had inherited from her parents was her mother's old car. It was a Subaru, nothing fancy but it got the job done. Their house was supposed to go to her as well, but the adoption agency decided to sell it and give her the money, which often was given to her foster families to help provide for her.

The rest of the money she made or inherited went straight to her bank account for gas.

Lucy finished the braid and tied it off, letting it rest on her shoulder. She leaned over to the side of her bed, reaching to turn off her lamp when she heard a scream and a shout from outside. She jumped, quickly retracting her hand.

What was that?

Her heart raced as she crawled out of bed. She silently prayed no one was trying to break in. Lucy didn't have a weapon in her room, but she knew her brother kept a baseball bat in his. She slid her bare feet into her slippers before she walked out into the hallway.

Quickly, she crept to his door. It was closed, but not latched, so she gently pushed it open with her foot. The room was dark and there was no light coming from the bathroom. Her heart dropped when she realized Scott wasn't in here. Still, the brunette walked further into the room as she wrapped her arms around herself. She wasn't sure where he kept the bat, but she hoped it was going to be easy to find.

Deciding to start underneath his bed, Lucy walked over to the edge of it, right next to one of his windows. Being alone in the dark sent shivers down her spine, and the last thing she wanted to do was peek underneath his bed. She turned to glance out the window really quick, planning to just drop to the floor quickly before she could talk herself out of it.

The teenage girl didn't follow through with her plan when she saw Stiles Stilinski's jeep parked next to the McCall house. Which she thought was weird, considering it's nearly eleven at night.

She ran down the stairs quickly, grabbing a flashlight on her way out the door. She walked out on the porch, furrowing her brows when her eyes landed on the boys.

"What are you guys doing?" Lucy crossed her arms as she walked up to Scott and Stiles. Her brother had a hold of his baseball bat, raised as if he was going to swing it at his best friend. Stiles, with a cheeky grin, was hanging upside down from the roof.

"It's nothing. Just go back inside." Scott sighed, lowering the bat.

"It is not nothing!" Stiles looked as if he had been slapped across the face. "Two joggers found a body in the woods."

The sheriff's son rolled off the roof and jumped up from the ground, leaning on the fencing.

"A dead body?" Scott asked.

"No, a body of water. Yes, dumbass, a dead body!"

"So?" Lucy walked closer to the boys, rubbing her arms.

Stiles gasped. "So? It's a dead body!"

"Yeah, we heard you the first time." The brunette mumbled under her breath.

"Like murdered?" Scott clarified.

"Nobody knows yet. Just that it was a girl, probably in her twenties."

Confused, Lucy asked, "So, they've found the body?"

Stiles nodded, which prompted another question from Scott. "Then what are they looking for?"

"That's the best part, they only found half of it!" Stiles explained. "We're going."

Scott looked at his sister, who shook her head.

"No thanks, I'm good. It's late and we have school tomorrow. We should all be in bed right now." She turned to Stiles, pointing a finger in his direction. "And you need to stay out of it and let your dad do his job."

When Lucy turned her back to head inside, Stiles mimicked her words, swinging his hands in the air for a dramatic flair. Scott chuckled, which reached the girl's ears. She turned around and glared at both of them. Both boys stopped, smiling apologetically.

Lucy stepped out of her car, watching Scott step off his bike. Normally, she'd offer to drive him but with him having practice and then work, they decided it'd be better if they drove separately.

As she pulled her bag out of the backseat, she watched as Jackson Whittemore said something with a glare to her brother. She knew that the captain of the lacrosse team could be an asshole towards her brother. She had hoped that when her best friend started dating Jackson, that he'd back off a little. Afterall, Jackson sat with the girls at lunch every day and would even make small talk with Lucy in passing.

"You okay?" She asked as she walked up to her brother.

He nodded. "Yeah, I'm good."

"Okay." Lucy smiled, about to head inside when Stiles ran up to them.

"Let's see this thing." He said, gesturing to Scott's shirt.

"See what?" She asked.

Scott sighed. "I got bit by something last night. In the woods."

Lucy furrowed her eyebrows. "Like... a bug?"

To answer her, he lifted his shirt, revealing the size of the bandage taped to his stomach.

"Oh my God, Scott!" Lucy covered her mouth. "You told Mom, right?"

"No. She doesn't know I was out last night. And I don't want her to."

"What do you think it was?" Stiles asked, going to touch it.

Scott swatted his hand away. "It was too dark to see much, but I'm pretty sure it was a wolf."

"Yeah right." Lucy scoffed, her eyes finding Lydia Martin's from across the parking lot. "I'll see you later. And if it gets worse, you're telling Mom."

She walked away from the boys, linking arms with Lydia.

"Good morning." Lydia smiled, eyeing Stiles and Scott with distaste.

"Morning, Lyds."

"Still hanging out with them?" The strawberry blonde happily took her eyes off the boys to look at her friend.

"Yes, Lydia, I am. Scott is my brother-"

"-Adoptive."

"Still my brother. And Stiles is his best friend."

Speaking of the devil, Stiles turned to look at the girls as they walked up the stairs to the main entrance.

"Oh god, that is freaking awesome. I mean, this is seriously gonna be the best thing that's happened to this town sinc- since the birth of Lydia Martin. Hey, Lydia!"

Lucy glanced at her best friend, who was listing off all the classes she was taking this year. Lucy felt bad for the Stilinski boy. It was obvious he had some sort of feelings for the strawberry blonde girl next to her, but Lydia paid him no mind.

Maybe it was for the best. Lydia did have a boyfriend after all.

As the girls got closer to their respective lockers at the end of the day, Lydia stopped short. Lucy stared at the pretty brunette who had gotten Lydia's attention.

"That jacket is absolutely killer. Where did you get it?" Lydia asked the girl, keeping her arm linked with Lucy as they moved out of their classmate's way.

"My mom was a buyer for a boutique back in San Francisco." The girl explained with a shy smile.

Lydia grinned. "And you are my new best friend."

Lucy playfully elbowed her. "Lyds, I'm right here." She turned to the new girl, sticking out her free hand. "I'm Lucy. Lucy Evans."

"Allison. Allison Argent." The girl smiled, shaking Lucy's hand.

"Hey, Jackson." Lydia smiled as the lacrosse captain appeared next to her.

"And that's Lydia Martin and Jackson Whittemore. Beacon Hills power couple." Lucy explained with a sarcastic eye roll.

"Don't be jealous." Lydia snarked, giving her best friend a playful look.

"Don't worry, Jackson isn't my type. I prefer guys with a smaller ego." She tilted her head, smiling at Lydia. "Although I am sad, he took you before I could."

Lydia gasped, holding back a laugh. "Luce, shut up!"

Said girl only shrugged her shoulders with a laugh, knowing her jokes only irritated Lydia's boyfriend.

Turning her attention to Allison, Lydia leaned against Jackson. "So, this weekend, there's a party."

"A party?" Allison raised her eyebrow.

"Yeah, Friday night. You should come." Jackson pressed.

"Uh, I can't. It's family night this Friday. Thanks for asking." She smiled.

"Family night?" Lydia tilted her head. Allison nodded, pursing her lips.

"The parties aren't that great anyways." Lucy added. "I'm sure a night with your family will be way more fun."

"Doesn't your mom usually work late?" Jackson quipped.

"She does, but I enjoy spending time with her whenever I can."

The team captain nodded, turning his attention back to the new girl. "You sure? Everyone's going after the scrimmage."

"You mean like football?" Allison asked.

"Football's a joke in Beacon. The sport here is Lacrosse. We've won the state championship for the past three years." Jackson boasted. Lucy rolled her eyes at his arrogance.

"Because of a certain team captain." Lydia complimented her boyfriend, ignoring her friend's eye roll.

Jackson smiled down at her. "Well, we have practice in a few minutes. That is if you don't have anywhere else-"

"-Well, I was going to-" Allison started, only to be cut off.

"-Perfect! You're coming." Lydia smiled, letting Jackson lead her away.

Lucy smiled at Allison. "You don't have to come with us. My brother is on the team, but sometimes practice can get a bit boring."

Allison shut her locker as the girls followed Lydia. "No, it's okay. I probably shouldn't hide from everyone on my first day."

Lucy nodded. "That would make it hard to find friends."

"Is it safe to say..." Allison trailed off as they made it to the bleachers.

"That we're friends? Of course." Lucy grinned, taking a seat next to Lydia. Smiling brightly, Allison sat on her other side.

Lydia tapped Lucy's shoulder. "Jackson is going to destroy your brother."

Lucy frowned, watching Coach Finstock stick Scott at goal. "He's never played goal before."

"Who is that?" Allison pointed to the McCall boy, who was walking to the net with his head down.

"My brother. Scott McCall."

"Brother? I thought your last name was Evans?"

Lucy smiled softly. "It is. I'm adopted."

"I don't mean to pry, but why didn't you change your last name? Were you recently adopted?"

"No, I was adopted in middle school. My parents passed when I was really young, so their last name is one of the only things I have to remember them. Well, Evans was my mom's last name. She never changed hers either."

"Oh. That makes a lot of sense, actually. That's pretty cool, I mean it's also sad, but cool."

Lucy grinned. "Thank you. You're the first person to not think I'm crazy for keeping my last name."

Before Allison could answer, something extraordinary happened on the field. The loud cheers of the crowd turned the girls' attention back to the field where Scott was catching every shot.

"He seems like he's pretty good." Allison pointed out.

"Not usually." Lucy stated, her eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "I've never seen him catch the ball before."

"He won't get Jackson's." Lydia leant forward on her fists as she readied herself for Jackson's turn. Pushing past the line of players, her boyfriend took off towards the goal. To the crowd's surprise, Scott caught the ball, holding it high for everyone to see.

Ignoring her boyfriend's loss, Lydia was the first of the three to jump and cheer. Lucy looked to Allison, who only shrugged her shoulders before cheering too. While she clapped for her brother, she smiled as she watched as his best friend cheered the loudest from the sidelines.
