Echoes Of A Cold War

05:49, 25 December 2024

(The mountains of Yamantau...)

(Bell, Mason, and Woods approach Belikov in his helicopter)

Belikov: The first building is just over that ridge

Woods: Thanks, Dimitri. We'll radio when we've found the mainframe

Belikov: Woods, you know what the KGB does to double agents? Nyet? (No?)

Woods hands Belikov an American sports team's baseball cap.

Belikov: Daaaaaa. (Yes.)

(Belikov wears the cap and hands Woods his rifle)

Belikov: If they win this season, it's almost worth facing the firing squad. Who's your friend?

Mason: That's Bell

Bell: (Casual wave)

Belikov: Bell... Eh, I've only one hour of fuel. So after that, you find yourself a new ride!

Woods: C'mon! Let's get moving

(Bell, Woods, and Mason leave as Belikov shuts the helicopter door)

Mason: That's our inside man?

Woods: Don't let the smell of cheap vodka and caviar throw you. Dimitri's the real deal. He knows where all the bodies are buried. Hell, he buried half of them

(Bell, Mason, and Woods slide down an icy slope and enter a rundown warehouse. As they reach an opening, they encounter two soviet scouts on a ridgeline)

Mason: Heads up. Scouts on the ridgeline

Woods: We should drop 'em now before we get any closer

Mason: Yeah, you're the expert in quiet...

Woods: Hey, I'm a complicated man with many layers. I'm a goddamn onion, Mason. You should know that

Mason: Bell. You ready?

Bell: (Nods)

(Bell and Mason quietly snipe the soviet scouts. One more comes around, so Woods takes him oht)

Woods: Nice. Let's keep moving.

(Bell, Woods, and Mason encounter another patrol past the ridgeline)

Soviet Soldier: Make sure that line is secure!

Soviet Solder: Yes, comrade!

Soviet Soldier: Hurry up! It's cold as balls!

Woods: Everyone pick a target

Mason: On your shot, Bell

(Bell, Mason, and Woods each snipe a target, taking out the patrol almost instantly)

(Woods inspects the cable line while Mason and Bell scope out another patrol across the cliffs)

Mason: Good kills. Hopefully, nobody heard

Woods: Shit, this looks kinda dicey. But, hey, if it's good enough for the reds...

(Bell and Mason snipe the third Russian patrol. They join Woods and hook up to the cable line and prepare to slide across)

Bell: (Heavily exhales as he looks down)

Mason: Hope this holds...

(Bell, Mason, and Woods slide across the chasm and reach the other side safely and spot the ruined SATCOM building from Weaver and Hudson's previous mission)

Woods: See? Piece of cake. That's the old SATCOM building

Mason: Looks like it's hanging by a thread

(Bell, Mason, and Woods make their way to the building when Woods spots some snipers near the building)

Woods: They got snipers. Don't let them spot you. Stay low

(Mason sneaks up and kills one of the guards with his knife. He's about to get spotted when Bell stabs the other one)

Woods: Good kills. See anymore?

(With overwatch from Woods, Bell and Mason eliminate the rest of the guards)

Woods: Nice work! Here we go

(Bell, Mason, and Woods zip-line down the cable and enter the building, eliminating the last two guards. They reach one of the computer rooms)

Woods: I think we're in the clear

Mason: Damn. Look at this place...

(Woods lets out an astonished whistle. He, Bell, and Mason search the room. Mason comes upon a crossbow bolt embedded in a Russian soldier's corpse. The numbers from Mason's past flash in his eyes momentarily)

Mason: Hmm. Crossbow bolt

Bell: Hmm

Woods: Looks like Hudson and Weaver had some fun here

Mason: That's not how he remembers it

(Mason collects evidence. He and Woods hear Russian voices over the radio)

Soviet Soldier: The crane is nearly ready at dig site seven

Soviet Soldier: Copy that. The mainframe has been separated from the data vault and is being prepped for extraction. Inform me at once when the crane is in position!

Soviet Soldier: Yes, Comrade!

(Bell, Mason, and Woods reach the broken railing overlooking the valley below)

Woods: I think they said they're prepping the mainframe for extraction with a crane. We find the crane, we find the mainframe.

Mason: Good thing I'm not afraid of heights...

(Bell, Mason, and Woods make their way across the catwalk and back into the building)

Woods: Ugh. Soviet engineering at its worst

(Soon enough, Bell, Mason, and Woods encounter Russian soldiers in a firefight. One of the soldiers throws a grenade)

Woods: Grenade!

(The grenade detonates. Bell, Mason, and Woods exchange fire with the soviet soldiers until they're all dead. The trio exits the SATCOM building once more and spots a doomsday bunker ahead. They approach another cable leading to the building and several Soviet troops are on the helipad..)

Woods: That's the doomsday bunker

Mason: We're getting close to the mainframe room

Woods: We'll cross on that cable. Those Reds near the helipad have some serious ordinance. Better take 'em out before we cross

(Bell and Mason each take out a Pelington 703 sniper rifle and kill the soviet snipers across the chasm)

(Bell, Mason, and Woods all prepare to cross)

Mason: I went first last time.

Woods: Why change it up now?

(Bell, Mason, and Woods all start to zip across, but Mason loses his grip and falls)

Mason: Shit!

Woods: Mason!

(Mason hits the railing below and watches his rifle fall below. He tries to pull himself up but to no avail as he slips and hits another catwalk below. He get back on his feet and takes out his knife. Woods calls him over the radio)

Woods: Mason! Bell, you see him?

Bell: (Looking around)

(Bell and Woods look for Mason, but they don't see him yet)

Woods: Mason, what's your status?

Mason: Lost my damn gun. You're going first next time! I see a tunnel down here. You'll have to find another way inside

Woods: Copy that. Stay moving

Mason: (Static)

Woods: Mason? Mason, come in? Great... Bell, on me

(With Mason separated from them, Woods and Bell continue on the course of the mission. Mason makes his way through the tunnel and finds an elevator shaft with boxes inside. He climbs up the boxes and reaches a stairway as the shaft creaks and rumbles)

Mason: (Heavy breathing)

(Mason reaches a door and opens it up back into the snowed-in building. He shivers and rubs his hands as he walks past some frozen Soviet corpses)

Mason: Damn, it's cold...

(Mason walks through the corridors and finds a group of soviet soldiers conversing as they patrol the building. Mason happens upon a weapons locker and tries unsuccessfully to open it)

Mason: Huh. It's locked

Soviet Soldier: This place was abandoned after an avalanche. But, there are rumors that some of the bodies recovered had gunshot wounds.

Soviet Soldier: Comrade, are you saying our superiors covered up an attack on Soviet soil?

Soviet Soldier: Avalanches don't fire bullets

Soviet Soldier: Bah. We shouldn't be here anyway

Soviet Soldier: Afraid of ghosts, Comrade?

Soviet Soldier: If anything, I'm afraid of getting lost here and freezing to death while listening to your ridiculous theories. Let's finish this patrol already

(Mason sneaks up on the two soviet soldiers in the middle of a conversation and kills them with his knife. He picks up an AK-47 assault rifle from one of them. He makes his way through the corridors, blasting through a couple of soviet patrols along the way. He finds a locked weapons locker, picking up a key from a dead soviet soldier and opening it)

(Mason kills the soldiers and opens the locker with a key. Inside, he finds a photo of Friedrich Steiner, a revolver, and a video tape. The numbers flash across his mind once again for a moment as Mason continues his journey)

Woods: Mason! Do you read me? Mason!

Mason: Yeah, I read you. You gotta be close

(Mason enters another service corridor and hears Woods' voice as he drops a green flare down a ladder. Mason climbs up the ladder and reunites with Woods and Bell)

Woods: Over here! With the ruckus you made, I'm surprised the entire Soviet Union ain't up our ass

(Bell, Mason, and Woods go through another section of the bunker with some newly killed Russian soldiers)

Mason: You've been busy

Bell: (Shrugs)

Woods: That's what they pay me for. In here

(Bell, Mason, and Woods enter an observation room as they approach a window overlooking the dig site)

Woods: Mason, hop on that scope. Look for something that could lift a mainframe. Bell, cover the door

Bell: (Thumbs up)

(Mason looks through the surveyor for any dig sites)

Woods: You see any dig sites?

(Mason zooms in on the crane)

Woods: There. What's that?

Bell: Hmm...

Mason: Bingo

Woods: Map says that crane's hangin' right over the atrium, which puts it in spittin' distance of the old computer room. That's where we need to go

Belikov: Have you found the mainframe?

Woods: There's a big crane on the west side of the base. Have your winch ready

Belikov: Excuse me, my winch?

Woods: Sorry, you're breaking up!... Ha! They got a crane? We got a chopper

(Bell, Mason, and Woods continue through a corridor and slide down a rope to spot the Soviet soldiers preparing to move out)

Soviet Soldier: Let's pack it up! We ship out in ten minutes!

(Bell, Mason, and Woods quickly open fire and start dropping soviet soldiers)

Soviet Soldier: The intruders are here!

(Everyone ducks into cover as soviet machine gunners open fire from above)

Woods: Dimitri! We're pinned down! That chopper loaded?

Belikov: Are you kidding? Hold onto your butts!

(Belikov flies in with his helicopter and opens fire on the machine gunners in an explosive fashion)

Belikov: Like your 4th of July, no? You're welcome!

Woods: We gotta get down there. Now!

Mason: On your six!

(Bell, Mason, and Woods continue fighting their way through to the crane, killing any Soviet soldiers they encounter)

Woods: Watch the rooftop!

(Bell, Mason, and Woods shoot the soldiers on the rooftop and encounter a manned tower turret)

Woods: Turret! 12 o'clock!

Mason: Shit! Find cover!

(Bell fires a precise shot with his sniper rifle, nailing the turret gunner right in the forehead)

Woods: Nice work!

(Soviet soldiers zipline across a nearby cable)

Woods: Hostiles! On the zipline!

(Mason quickly dispatches the ziplining soviet soldiers)

(Bell, Mason, and Woods dispatch the ziplining soldiers and hook up to another cable leading across a chasm)

Woods: Shit! Hope this one holds!

Mason: Damn thing better hold this time!

(Bell, Mason, and Woods make it across successfully as Belikov's chopper helps them to dispatch more Soviet troops. Mason slides down a snowy embankment and collides with a Russian soldier who falls down to the bottom below. Woods slides down and brakes next to Mason. Bell follows)

Woods: Let's go!

Belikov: Woods! I'm over the extraction site! Are you ready?

Woods: We see you, Dimitri! Hold on!

Mason: We're out of time. We have to jump!

(Bell, Mason, and Woods descend down the building's levels and shoot more Soviet troops before they find the massive mainframe down in the sublevels)

Belikov: Is the mainframe big? Because if it's too big, we can't lift off!

Woods: Uhhh, no! It's - regular size!

(Bell, Mason, and Woods reach the top of the mainframe, standing their ground against soviet soldiers)

Woods: Dimitri, we're in position! Lower the winch!

Belikov: Lowering!

Woods: Mason! Hand me that cable!

(Belikov lowers the winch down to Mason, who then hooks it up to the mainframe while Bell and Woods cover him. More Soviet soldiers appear and open fire)

Woods: We're locked in, Dimitri! Take us up!

Belikov: Going up!

(Belikov raises the winch slowly due to the mainframe's massive weight. The mainframe sways back and forth, causing Bell, Mason, and Woods to struggle in their balance)

Mason/Bell: Woah...

Woods: Woah! Shit! Careful up there!

Belikov: This weight is most uncooperative!

Woods: C'mon! Pick up the pace, Belikov!

Belikov: Hang on!

(Belikov raises the mainframe faster, causing it to hit the side of the building)

Woods: Shit! Fuck! Slow down! Slow down!

Belikov: Speed up! Slow down! I'll handle the flying! You handle the shooting!

(Bell, Mason, and Woods continue to engage the soviet soldiers. Belikov finally manages to raise the mainframe out of the building with the trio still on top of it)

Woods: We're clear, Dimitri! Take us home!

(Belikov's chopper flies off into he horizon as the screen fades out)
