Chapter 12

23:49, 11 January 2025

It was a stormy night at Hogwarts, and the restless winds knocking against the windows seemed to carry a dark foreboding. Y/n sat in the Slytherin common room with a heavy heart, unsure if she would sleep that night. Everything around her had changed recently - the secret meetings, the lies to Mattheo, the burning mark on her forearm that had only recently been drawn on her skin in a whispered ceremony. It was still sensitive, and the pain reminded her of the irreversible decision she had made.

She wanted to tell him sometime, but when? And how? These thoughts tormented her until the door to the common room abruptly slammed open. Mattheo stood there, wet from the rain outside and angrier than she had ever seen him. In his fist he held a crumpled piece of parchment - a letter from Regulus. Y/n recognized him immediately.

"So it's true," Mattheo said in an ice-cold voice, coming towards her. "Regulus didn't tell me, but I found this letter. You're one of them now. A Death Eater."

Y/n jumped up, her heart pounding in her chest. "Mattheo, let me explain-"

"What is there to explain?" Mattheo's voice rose, angry and desperate at the same time. "You've become part of something that will destroy you! You don't know what you've gotten yourself into, Y/n! You have no idea what this means!"

She tried to grab his hand, but he backed away as if she had burned him. "I did this to be closer to you!" she cried, her voice shaking with emotion. "I couldn't just watch you deal with this alone! You are so torn, Mattheo, I wanted to show you that I am there for you - no matter how dark it gets."

"This is madness!" His dark eyes glowed with anger and horror. "You have no idea how deeply you can get caught up in this. These people... my father... they will not save you, Y/n. They will destroy you. And now you bear his mark. They own you!"

Y/n swallowed hard, tears glistening in her eyes. "I am willing to take the risk, Mattheo. I am doing this out of love. Out of love for you."

These words made him pause for a moment. He ran a hand through his wet hair, turned around and stared at the crackling fire in the fireplace. The tension in his body was palpable, the agony he felt was almost tangible. Finally he turned to her, but his eyes were hard.

"You don't understand," he whispered. "I wanted to keep you away, to protect you. You have no idea what my father might do if he found out that you mean something. That you mean something to me."

Y/n took a step closer. "Then don't tell him. Let's stand together against him."

"Together?" Mattheo laughed bitterly. "You have no idea how dangerous this is. There is no way back. You have bound yourself to him."

Y/n raised her arm and pulled up her sleeve, revealing the dark mark on her skin. Mattheo's face twisted as if he had been hit in the face. "I may have bound myself, yes. But I will not let him control me. If you are ready to fight for a different future, then fight with me."

The Ceremony: Y/n Becomes a Death Eater (Flashback)

Y/n vividly remembered the day she received the Dark Mark. It was a cold, oppressive night, and Regulus had led her to a remote estate to introduce her to the Death Eaters. The air was thick with tension as Y/n knelt before Voldemort himself. The room was filled with masked figures, their eyes sparkling from the dark holes of the masks they wore.

"Why do you think you can serve our cause?" Voldemort's voice was like a cold breath of wind that went through her bones.

"I want power," Y/n had answered, as Regulus had advised her. But in truth, her motivation was something completely different. She wanted to be close to Mattheo.

Voldemort looked at her for a long time, then stepped closer. The touch of his wand on her forearm felt like fire was shooting through her veins. When he drew the Dark Mark on her skin, she knew there was no turning back.

The escalation between Y/n and Mattheo

Back in the present, Mattheo stood motionless as Y/n pulled her sleeve down again. His breathing was heavy and when he spoke, his voice trembled with frustration and pain. "You don't understand that what you did doesn't bring me closer to you, but separates me from you even more. I don't want to lose you, but that's exactly what's happening now."

Y/n looked at him desperately. "I won't let this name, this world, tear us apart. We can change something, Mattheo. We can fight against it."

He shook his head slowly. "And if you don't make it? If they break you? I could never forgive you." With these words, he turned and left the common room, leaving Y/n behind, tears streaming hotly down her cheeks.

She had made her decision, but the price she paid for it was far higher than she ever imagined.

The weeks after Mattheo's departure were an ordeal for Y/n. Her relationship with him was irreparably strained by her decisions and the Dark Mark. He hardly spoke to her anymore, and when their eyes met, there was something broken in his eyes that hurt her deep inside. But Y/n remained determined. She had chosen a path and there was no turning back - neither for her nor for Mattheo.

One evening, as darkness fell over Hogwarts, Y/n was called into the Great Hall. She had expected there to be another meeting of the Death Eaters or a message from Voldemort. But she was surprised to find not only Regulus there, but also Mattheo.

"What's going on here?" Y/n asked cautiously, her hand tightly gripping her wand.

It was Regulus who broke the silence. "The game is over, Y/n. Voldemort knows that you are more than a simple chess move for Mattheo. He wants to cast a spell on you, to weave you into his plans. And Mattheo..." He gave his friend a penetrating look. "...knows that he has to save you from this before it's too late."

Mattheo, who had been silent until now, looked at her. His gaze was serious and full of unspoken emotions. "You may think you can survive in this world, Y/n. That you can stand up to my father. But you will lose. There is no way out - not for you, not for me. There is only one thing we can do."

"And what would that be?" Y/n asked sharply, hiding her fear behind a mask of determination.

Matheo took a step closer, and his expression was terribly serious. "We have to escape. Together. Out of this shadow, out of this madness."

Y/n's heart skipped a moment. "Escape?" She shook her head in disbelief. "You just want to rip me away? After everything I've been through? After everything I've done to be by your side?"

"Yes," Mattheo said simply. "Because that's the only thing that matters - you and me. There is no future here. None with Voldemort, none with the Death Eaters. If you stay, he will either break you or destroy you. And I will not stand by and watch that happen."

Regulus interrupted her before she could answer. "There is a way. A safe way out of the castle and out into the world. But it has to be now. Tonight."

Y/n stood between the two men, her mind and heart in turmoil. She had sacrificed so much, drawn herself so deeply into the dark world - and now Mattheo was asking her to give up everything for an uncertain future in freedom. But when she looked into his eyes, she knew he was right. If she stayed, she would never be able to be herself.

The Escape

The hours flew by. In the deep shadows of the night, Y/n, Mattheo and Regulus crept out of the castle. They passed through the familiar corridors with mixed feelings - sadness for what they were leaving behind and hope for what lay ahead.

As they left the grounds of Hogwarts behind, Y/n knew that their path would be a completely new one from now on. There was no more security, no guarantee that they would ever find peace. But she was with Mattheo and that was all that mattered.

A new beginning

The next few months were difficult. They were constantly on the run, from safe houses to secret hiding places, always one step ahead of Voldemort's servants. But in the freedom they found together, they also discovered something new - hope.

Y/n had left her past behind. The Dark Mark on her arm remained a reminder of the choices she had made, but it no longer defined her. With Mattheo by her side, she felt stronger than ever. She knew they still had a long way to go to fight - for their love, for their freedom, for their future.

And in Mattheo, she saw the same fighting spirit that had made her fall in love with him. The darkness would not define them. Not anymore.

In a world torn apart by chaos and war, Y/n and Mattheo finally had a chance to start over. And that was all they needed.
