Chapter 8

19:07, 11 January 2025

The weeks passed in a whirlwind of emotion and tension. Hogwarts continued as usual - with exams, homework, Forbidden Forests, Potions lessons and the weekly Quidditch matches. But for Y/n, every day was a struggle, marked especially by the looks and gestures of Mattheo. It seemed as if the tension between them increased with every hour they felt for each other, even if they never said a word about it. Everything remained unspoken - and yet it was as obvious between them as the heavy, overhanging cloud pattern in the sky.

It was often the same in their classes: when their eyes met, there was an almost electric spark. It was these brief moments when time seemed to stretch, as if the whole world was frozen in a single glance, and yet they had to bend, adapt to the world around them, as if they were looking through an invisible, invisible veil.

And it was hard to ignore this confusion - what was it between them? Was it an unfulfilled longing, a rush of desire, or just the omnipresent magic that lay in every corner of Hogwarts?

One day, a few weeks after the party, Y/n found herself in such a situation again. She was sitting in the Great Hall for lunch, the conversations of her classmates like a quiet murmur that flowed over her head all the time while she was absently lost in her thoughts. She felt it immediately as he approached.

Mattheo. It was as if she could recognize him by his unique stride, the way he occupied the room. And she really had to pull herself together not to look at him immediately, to turn the universe away from her for a moment, to leave everything behind. But when she raised her eyes, their gazes met and she could see nothing else.

The tension between them was overwhelming, and in that moment it was as if the whole world around her fell silent. Mattheo's gaze, sharp and demanding, met hers, and although no words were spoken, Y/n knew exactly what was between them. No apology, no release - just the slow, agonizing pull of an invisible bond.

At that moment, something unusual happened. Without another word, Mattheo stood up. She stared after him until he left the hall with his friends - Regulus and Barty. But a stabbing feeling overcame Y/n. It was as if something inside her chest was tearing. Maybe it was the inexplicable attraction that reigned between them. She couldn't deny it.

"You should stop staring at him like that," Pansy said suddenly with a slight grin. Her words came from the quiet side room of her thoughts, and Y/n shook her head to collect herself. "It doesn't help to be interested in him, especially not with him."

"I know," Y/n replied, her voice a little absent. "But sometimes it just can't be avoided."

The class continued, but the urgency of the next moment felt ever more intense and unstoppable.

Later that week - in the third Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson - it hit her. She was already on her way into the classroom when she stumbled and twisted her neck, only to land near Mattheo. Her face hit his chest, catching him visibly surprised and equally unprepared. They paused for a moment. The situation was almost too perfect.

Y/n felt his light breathing and felt a nervous twitch in her body. "Why... why can't you ever just stay alone?" Mattheo whispered so quietly that only she could hear.

Everything inside her seemed to stand still, only to be thrown off balance by that one, random, yet all-pervasive moment. This closeness. This seeing. What followed was barely a glance that turned into a conversation, as their lips were almost inexplicably very close to the edge of mutual understanding.

But then came the moment when a hand that she noticed quickly – almost too quickly – shattered the moment. Y/n stepped back abruptly, grimaced and threw an ugly smile that quickly became a wall for herself.

"I... I shouldn't," she muttered and turned around. Escape was inevitable. In that moment, all she wanted to do was get away from this intense tension that was floating in the air between them.

But then, to her utter horror, she heard his icy, shorthand tone behind her: "There's no turning back, Y/n."

It was like a bombshell, and even though she turned around, everything between them remained unsaid. Only the smoldering, dense attraction. The unspoken promise that they would have to choose each other at some point – whether as the step into a future or as the moment that could never be challenged again. Their paths became more and more intertwined.

The next few days passed in a haze of unspoken words and tense looks. Y/n could no longer be sure what to think of Mattheo. Every encounter, every random glance they exchanged, seemed like a balancing act. Was it still just the constant tension between them? Or was it more now? And if so, why couldn't she bring herself to finally make it clear to him that things couldn't go on like this?

The next day finally dawned, and Y/n and Mattheo were facing each other again - this time at the potions. Y/n had tried to come to terms with everything she had experienced in the last few weeks. But when she entered the room, she immediately felt her thoughts heading back to him, without her being able to really do anything about it. Mattheo was sitting in his usual place near the window, and as always, he was surrounded by an aura of self-confidence.

Their eyes met again. Y/n felt the familiar shiver of excitement, but also the familiar resistance. Her inner restlessness was now a constant companion. Why did she have the feeling that something had not yet been said? Why did the question of what should remain unsaid between them burn so strongly in her thoughts?

"Have you finished the task?" Pansy suddenly sat down next to her and distracted Y/n for a moment from the thoughts that kept cropping up.

"Yes," Y/n replied, "but... there is still a lot more to do."

The hours passed in an almost invisible stream, but the atmosphere in the room was tingling with tension. Mattheo did not say a word to her, but he was there - in every movement, in every sound he made. It was as if everything was focused on a moment, a moment in which everything finally had to be said or brought to an end.

And that moment came faster than expected.

When class ended and everyone went back to the Slytherin common room, Mattheo suddenly stood in front of Y/n. "You can't keep pretending nothing happened," he said sharply, looking straight at her. His eyes flashed with determination.

"What do you mean?" Y/n felt her voice sound uneasy. "What happened, that... that was nothing, Mattheo."

"You can't tell yourself it was nothing," he replied, now a step closer. "We both know it was more. But I can't make it right if you pretend... it's okay."

Her chest felt tight, and the air between them was almost too thick to say anything. She knew he was right. It had never been "nothing." "I..." She sighed deeply and closed her eyes. It was clear that these conversations would not be easy, but she also knew that she had to face this truth.

"You pushed me away back then, Mattheo. And you were the one who distanced yourself. Why should I think that could change now?" Her words came out, sharp, yet full of anger at her own powerlessness.

Matheo took another step closer. "Maybe it was my fear, Y/n. But I know now that I can't just ignore you. You deserve more than that."

An intense moment broke the lingering tension between them, and for a split second it seemed that they were getting closer to each other again, not only physically, but also on the inside. But at that moment, as their thoughts were torn apart and they both seemed ready to take that final step, Y/n suddenly heard a voice from behind:

"Mattheo, enough!"

It was Regulus Black who interrupted the two. He stood nearby with his arms crossed, his gaze firm and unwavering. "If you really want to mean something to her, then not like that. You can't just ignore her boundaries just because you suddenly..."

"Regulus!" Y/n almost shouted at him, but the pressure in her head did everything she could to stop him. She agreed with him, but at the same time she knew that she and Mattheo had their own drama. "It's okay. Me and Mattheo... we'll work it out."

Regulus' gaze changed and he took a step back. "You don't always have control over everything, Y/n. Be careful before you drag yourself out too far."

"I know," Y/n whispered. But the sharp pressure in her head wouldn't let her rest. At that moment she wasn't sure what they wanted. What she wanted. And at the end of the day, it wasn't Mattheo's fault, it was a decision she had to make herself.

Y/n turned away from him and walked briskly away. She knew she needed time – time to feel what she really wanted. Her mind raced as her feet ran over the old floor. The past time was a single, bright whirlpool of chaos and this break – between rapprochement and distance - now threatened to determine her course.

But even if she wanted everything to finally end, Y/n knew deep down that she couldn't banish Mattheo from her thoughts for good.
