Chapter 10
02:10, 29 January 2023Kat's P.O.V.
IN THE NEXT DAYS I took some days off. The past months were already eventful enough for me to just step aside a bit, so I went away with Atlas. Apparently, with a bunch of stuff happening in Beacon Hills I indeed missed a lot, like, Lydia's birthday party, Matt actually being the Kanima's master and Peter Hale being above soil again. It sure was a good thing that Deaton and Stiles kept me up to date with everything that's going on in the small town. I even got pictures, so I could knew which Matt are we talking about, courtesy of Stiles. The only time when I payed a short visit was when I met up with Deaton and Scott in the clinic, since the young werewolf had a plan and he needed us for it.
Even with the Kanima thing happening around I was glad we missed the full moon of Beacon Hills. Even though, I would have rather spend my first actual full moon in peace in a wolf form, Atlas had other plans. Even if we had to skip the part where I become a big animal with white fur... He thought about something else that could cheer me up. And we had found our best activity for that night which was known to be stuck with us in the last centuries. Wolf-watching. Or in other words, stalking werewolves from my own type on a full moon. Yes, nothing was wrong in our heads.
We walked below the night sky of a forest near San Francisco, taking our sweet time by just enjoying the pleasant spring breeze that was blowing between the trees. We left the trail a while back, but we're confidently walking from tree to tree, following our instinct as we were trying to find the pack we were looking for. Apparently, or as Atlas knew, they were, in theory, a nomad pack which was always travelling through the country, only so they wouldn't have to shift always in the same place during the full moon, ergo, another full moon-another state. If I had the chance, I'd have rather just go to the Appalachian Mountains the see if the pack there was still alive, or just would've gone with the safe option, New Orleans. Although wolves are still not welcomed there.
After what felt like hours and hours of walking, which has been actually a four hour long hike with normal human speed, we stopped in our tracks and took our places behind the rocks. They're already transformed. I watched them in awe, like a little kid who saw the princesses in Disneyland for the first time, trying hard not to make even one small noise. I always loved to watch them, even when I didn't have the pleasure to change. Even after I learned how to transform at will when I became a Tribrid. I still had a hard time learning keeping myself in control when I took on a full wolf form. Instead, that's why I fell in love with the sight of wolves who could survive the full moon without giving a single shit.
We could have been hiding in the distance for hours when my phone started buzzing, notifying me that I got a new text. I pulled it out of my back pocket, unlocked it to read what it said, but when I did. my eyes in the exact moment went wide.
"What is it?" Atlas nudged me on the side, so without saying anything I turned my screen to him.
"Bilisnki":Heading to the station with dad and ScottTrying to find more hard core evidenceI just thought I'd keep you updated
Atlas looked at me with an expression of huge confusion.
"Is it bad?" he asked lowly "Do you have a bad feeling? That look." he pointed at my face "You only do that when you have a bad feeling."
"And I sure do." I nodded "I have to get back." I said way too fast out loud that even the man looked at me like I was speaking in Elvish according to his non-existing knowledge. I didn't give him any time, I already turned my back on him, slowly getting up from behind the rock and a began moving back to the path we walked on earlier.
"Wait a minute." he said speeding after me as he landed in front of me. He took a hold of my arm "First, come again. Second, why?"
"I have to get back." I repeated, pulling my arm out of his grasp "I just do." I let out an annoyed sigh as I walked past him, but after four steps I turned back around "Cross your fingers for me, I have no idea if I can still perform the teleportation spell, I'm only confident about projection." I smiled sheepishly at him.
"You sure can." He gave me an encouraging smile and I just closed my eyes, exhaling slowly. I tried to keep my breathing even while imagining the Beacon Hills police station in front of my eyes and a minute later I opened them. Well, luck was not on my side at all.
I took a look around, walking fast on the deserted road in the direction where I could see some civilization. Another minute passed as I finally came across a 'Welcome' sign only to my eyes to go wide again.
"Oh for fuck's sake!" I yelled into the middle of the night just as I realized how far I actually was. Well, not really near my destination, but good enough. If I was at least a little bit lucky and not afraid to die when I arrive, I could reach Beacon Hills with vamp speed without stopping in under thirty minutes. I was not keen on that at all, I would mention. But I didn't have a choice since I didn't have a car, so I did the best I could do. I ran.
-----------------------------------
Yes, it surely took me twenty-five minutes to get here, but was it worth it? Yes, and also no. When I stopped in front of the station I took a good minute for myself just to finally breathe and I let my hair out of my hair band. I placed the piece of rubber on my wrist and I walked closer, only to find Derek being held up by the Kanima. Why am I not even surprised that he can't win one single fight..?
I didn't even flinch when the half Jackson creature screeched at me, I just stood tall looking at the two.
"Tell me, D, why am I not surprised?"
"Oh, shut up." he mumbled as his lips became also numb because of the Kanima venom. While still holding Derek the other one began moving towards me, when he reached he took a hold of the back of my neck, leading me away with the Hale.
He placed the male one in front of the door, me behind him and the Kanima behind me, fairly tightening its grip on my neck.
"Open the door." I heard a male voice from the inside, making the assumption that it could be the master. Damn, I need good vibes like that, only the bad vibes tend to become reality! After what I could tell was hesitation from the other side of the door it slowly opened, revealing a Scott, a Stiles and Matt. The Kanima lifted its hand from behind me giving a little nudge to Derek only to leave him fall straight to the floor. I kept my sight on him, but eventually I looked at the three, giving them an awkward smile, but Stiles and Scott just stood there in shock. The silence had been broken by the laughter coming from Matt. "What an unexpected guest! Kidding, I was also waiting for you." he gestured to Jackson and he pushed me in as I tried to not to accidentally step on Derek, but soon enough I was pushed again, this time only to be standing next to Stiles.
"This is the one controlling it?" Derek spoke as Matt bended above him "This kid?"
"Well, Derek, not everyone's lucky enough to be a big, bad werewolf. Oh yeah, that's right!" He straightened himself up turning in our direction "I learned a few things lately. Werewolves, hunters, Kanimas. It's like a fricking Halloween party every full moon. Except for you, Stiles. What do you turn into?"
"Abominable Snowman." I snorted at his sarcasm "Bu, uh, it's more of, like, a wintertime thing, you know, seasonal." just as he finished, the Kanima made a quick cut on the back of his head "You bitch." he croaked out as his leg gave up and he fell on top of Derek.
"Get him off of me." Derek hissed.
"Oh, I don't know, Derek. I think you two make a pretty good pair." replied Matt "It must kinda suck though, to have all that power taken away from you with just a little cut to the back of the neck. I bet you're not used to feeling this helpless."
"He's still not helpless." I finally spoke which gained Matt's attention.
"Oh, really? And how do you come into the picture, teach?" he stepped closer to me as he tilted his head to the side "Or should I call you something else? Let me ask you this." he said in a lower voice "How come that there are records from you in the city archive from fifteen years ago, even a picture, yet you still look the exact same? Like, you haven't aged a single year, yet you still call yourself twenty-one!"
"It hasn't come to mind that maybe that was a relative?" I asked as I also tilted my head "I was a kid, you were a baby fifteen years ago, how do you know it was not photo of my mother." I said it more as a statement. Even though it was a load of bullshit on my side I still kept my heartbeat even, which as a looked to Scott, looked convincing enough.
"I don't believe you. Yet, I don't need to either." he signaled to Jackson as I felt his claws piercing the skin on neck, injecting me with his venom in hope that it would paralyze me. Since I was not willing to play my wildcard so soon I simply just collapsed on the floor next to Stiles, being thankful for letting my hair back down earlier since the wound was already, almost completely healed up.
"Now, now, kid, I would remind you that I still got my teeth. Why don't you get down here to me a little closer, huh? We'll see how helpless I am." Derek taunted Matt and I just rolled my eyes. Those teeth again...
"Yeah, bitch." Stiles voice cracked while he tried to speak, but this time I kept my laugh in, only letting myself smile, just as a car with a loud noise parked in front of the station.
"Is that her? Do what I tell you, and I won't hurt her. I won't even let Jackson near her."
"Scott, don't trust him." Stiles finally managed to find his voice, but as soon as he spoke Matt grabbed him by his flannel, flipping him on his back and placed his foot on his neck to block his air passage, but performing a spell I managed to give Stiles some help, so he could still get oxygen.
"This work better for you?"
"Hey just stop. Stop!"
"Then do what I tell you to."
"Okay. Alright. Stop!" Scott agreed as Stiles could finally breathe again after a loud coughing session since Matt removed his foot to take a step toward the McCall boy.
"You..." Matt pointed at Jackson "Take them in there. You..." he pointed at Scott "With me."
After the Kanima dragged us to the office and when Matt was not in sight Derek glanced at me.
"Why are you still on the ground?"
"Keeping up the act?" my reply came out more as a question as I gave him an awkward smile.
"What do you mean, act?" Stiles spoke.
"She's immune." the Hale stated.
"What?!" Stiles whisper-yelled. "Then why are you still on the floor and not helping?" I sighed.
"Because..." I turned my head towards him "One, Matt could be back in any minute and be roaming around the office would be more than a giveaway, two... I'm currently keeping Jackson in place so he won't look at as." I explained as I quietly sat up leaning towards Derek. "Three, if I'm not here he could kill you both."
"And why would you...?" Stiles started but as soon as he heard a bone break and Derek's groaning he stopped "What did you do?"
"Slowly triggered a part of his healing process." I smiles at him as I lay back down "Unfortunately, I can't really do anything with you." I grimaced slightly.
"Yeah, no, it's cool." he said lowly "Anyway, how are you even here? I thought you went away for the break."
"You texted me."
"Oh..."
"I had a bad feeling."
"Would you two shut up." the werewolf growled at us.
"Aw, shut up, sour-wolf. I know you love to hear my voice." I gave him a teasing smile.
"I once called him a sour-wolf too." Stiles said to me as he tried to glance at me.
"I know. He mentioned."
After a minute Matt and Scott came back to us, the latter being pushed inside the room which resulted in him stepping on my shin.
"Watch where you're going for the sake of the Gods!" I hissed through gritted teeth and he only gave me an apologetic smile.
"The evidence is gone." He said to Matt "Why don't you just go?"
"You think the evidence mattered that much, huh? No, no, I want the book."
"You're not the only one..." I muttered under my nose.
"What book?"
"The bestiary!" Stiles and Derek glanced at each other while I pursed my lips. "Not just the few pages, I want the entire thing."
"I don't have it. It's Gerard's. What do you want it for anyway?"
"I need answers."
"Answers to what?"
"To this." after a beat of hesitation he lifted up his shirt to show us how his skin already started to look like like his servant's.
-----------------------------------
When we were left alone, again with the Kanima, Stiles gathered his courage to speak up.
"Hey. Any of you know what's happening to Matt?"
"You know, the book's not gonna help him. You can't just break the rules. Not like this." said Derek.
"What do you mean."
"Nature balances things out. Always does." I replied.
"Is it because he's using Jackson to kill people who don't deserve it?"
"And killing people himself."
"So, if Matt breaks the rules of the Kanima, he becomes the Kanima?" Stiles asked for clarification.
"Yep." I said "Balance."
"Will he believe us if we tell him that?"
"Most likely not." I said.
"Okay, he's gonna kill all of us when he gets that book, isn't he?"
"Yep." we replied with Derek.
"Alright, so what do we do? Do we just... Sit here and wait to die?"
"No."
"Unless I can figure out a way to push the toxin out of my body faster."
"I can always bleed you dry." I offered and the man just narrowed his eyes at me "Okay, maybe next time."
"Like, triggering the actual healing process for myself. And not by breaking my finger..." his last sentence referred to my act from before, which made laugh quietly.
"Oh, what, what are you doing?" Stiles asked slightly panicked and I turned my head to the Hale, seeing his claws were already digging into his thigh. "Oh, gross."
"Yep, my idea was better..." I sighed, but suddenly an idea popped into my head "Hey, Stiles. Do you know were the lockdown alarm is in the station?"
"Yes, why?"
"Okay." I sat up fast and placed my fingers on his temples "That's gonna hurt a little bit. Sorry, kiddo." I closed my eyes, trying not to cause too much pain but I had to get through the specific memory past. I wasn't taking long since he was already thinking about it, so when I was done I let him go.
"What did you do...?" He groaned with closed eyes.
"Got the info out of your head. I said I'm sorry." I smiled, feeling already guilty about it. Before I'd actually gone on my way I leaned down to him placing my lips on his forehead and my right hand on his temple to perform a quick pain transfer spell so he would get rid of the terrible headache. I only knew that it was terrible because after I stopped the spell my head felt like my brain has been cut into pieces on the inside.
"Yeah, I'm not mad at all..." he said, blinking away his fluster as I stood up from the ground. "Feel free to do that again. After a fair warning."
"Will do." I added as I disappeared from the room and headed to the switch to put the place on lockdown, since it would also cut the power out. I did sound like a great plan until I executed it. Just as the alarm begin beeping in the dark building the windows broke in the front as someone from the outside began a gunfire. Someone... Argents.
In the middle of the gunfire, not like it fazed me, I ran back to the office where Derek and Stiles was, just as soon Scott pulled the latter one up.
"Go." I said as Scott looked at me "I'll take care of, D."
"How are you moving?" he asked looking at me in disbelief, and that was all I needed to turn around with a loud growl.
"Not now! Just go!" I yelled at him as my eyes flickered in their red color, by accident, when I looked at him. He was not needing another word, he bolted with Stiles as fast as he could. "How is it?" I asked when I kneeled next to Derek, taking a hold of his arm.
"Just do it." and that was all I needed, I twisted his arm in between my hands while a dug my claws into his skin breaking it easily so I could squeeze out his blood, the act was similar to the one he did with Erica, only that I did everything at the same time.
"Now, I can work with that." I voiced my thoughts out loud over Derek's painful yells. My eyes were already glowing in their crimson color again when I started chanting non-verbally, so that I could be the one controlling the blood flow. Only a couple seconds have passed when the liquid started to gather beneath us in a pool. I went for half a minute with it only to change the spell for a healing one, which took more of our time than we expected.
"Okay, stop."
"I'm not done." I shook my head but he grabbed my arm, making my eyes go back to their original ice blue color.
"It's alright. I can work with that." He smiled at me as he got up "Thank you." and without another word he ran away. Always the running... I listened to my surroundings for a little bit before a get up, also making the blood disappear, but after I pinpointed a location a headed that way.
-----------------------------------
I stood outside of the holding cell, seeing Stiles crawling on the floor and Matt closing his distance to Noah. After I second I lifted my hand up, using magic, to make sure that the gun stayed far away from the Sheriff's head as Matt tried to knock him out with it. Although, the contact never came to happened, the man fell unconscious, gently falling down to the ground as I tried to reduce the impact as much as I could. With my spell, it probably felt like he just fell into a marshmallow, even though it looked much worse. But still, Mellissa screamed anyways at the sight.
I looked down at the poor boy next to my feet and crouched down beside him while placing my hand on his back trying my hardest to sooth him a little bit.
"Stiles, hey, calm down. You're dad is okay." I said quietly next to his ear "Matt didn't hit him, he never made contact with the gun, he only got a sleeping spell. From me." He was still shaking with fear in his eyes, as he couldn't not keep his eyes away from his father, but eventually he nodded.
"I trust you." I almost went to say something else, almost, but I made the mistake to let my guard down. The next thing that I knew was the Kanima's hand around my throat as it lifted me up and pushed me backwards, and within a second it hung me up on an almost twelve inches long piece off metal that was sticking out of the wall. I loudly gasped at the impact, feeling as the cold material pierced my whole upper body through, coming out on the other end of my torso, just beside my spine as it missed my heart with a good inch since I could clearly feel as it was brushing against it.
"Oh, I'm gonna kill someone for this...!" I choked in a barely audible form while I tried standing on my feet, but unfortunately my legs barely touched the ground on my tip-toes. The events after that all became a blur. I didn't pay attention to who was fighting who, who looked like winning, like I had a choice in that matter, my only concern at the moment was to not bleed out, since Beacon Hills was not ready for me when I go on a binge after desiccation.
-----------------------------------
I had genuinely no idea how long have I been hanging from the wall as a medieval wall decoration, my eyes were already halfway closed when I heard some voices.
"Hey, K." a gentle slap to the face "Can you hear me?"
"Is she okay? Hey, why are you slapping her?"
"Stiles, go and make sure your dad's okay."
"Scott and I tried, and he's asleep." I heard a sigh "And she said he's only sleeping because of a spell."
"Then take him home." said the other voice, which I thought could be Derek, just by calling me K earlier, which was an old nickname I got from him, even if he's rarely using it now. And with I loud gasp I let fall from my lips, the man took a hold of me and hooked me off of the metal, taking me in his arm for support since I didn't have the strength to keep my eyes open, let alone keeping myself up on my feet.
"Hate to tell you, but I'm still on the floor if you haven't noticed!" yelled the other voice "News flash, I'm still paralyzed, cause I'm not a frickin' werewolf like you!"
"I'm taking her to Deaton. Then get better." and that's when the darkness took over.
-----------------------------------
Derek's P.O.V.
AFTER I GOT KAT OUT of the front seat of my Camaro I took her gently in my arm and rushed through the back door of the animal clinic to meat up with the vet. I kicked the door close behind me and just when I did that the man turned towards us.
"Put her on the table." he instructed as I complied and carefully lay her on her back, meanwhile he was rummaging around the drawers searching for something. When he found the scissors he took a step to be next to her and cut the fabric of her shirt in half to see the damage the metal has done to her. He immediately frowned, placing the scissors down "Turn her on the side." I did as he told as he went to grab an antiseptic which he poured on a cotton ball and grabbed it with a pair of forceps. "You see that?" he asked as he pointed to a point just above her collarbone while starting to clean the wound on her back "She's desiccating." I gulped as he stated.
"What do you want me to do?" he sighed quietly while glancing at me.
"How do you feel about robbing a blood bank?"
"No need." a masculine voiced chimed in out of nowhere just as our heads snapped in the direction of the sound. "How can I help?" he asked with a sigh.
"Get blood, Atlas." Deaton said to the man and with a nod he disappeared out of our sight.
"Wait, you know him?" I questioned the vet when we were alone again.
"Just like I know Kat." he said as he threw the blood socked cotton away and turned her back on her side "They're kind of a package deal but I'm sure you already know that." I only nodded, sitting down on a chair with a loud exhale as I supported myself on my elbows which were resting just on my knees.
"Got it." Atlas suddenly came back, holding a human girl's arm in her hands walking next to the unconscious woman.
"You know what to do." Deaton said and Atlas did not need another world.
"I'm sorry, darling." he said with a smile, that was intended to be charming, as he grabbed the wrist of the girl and gently bit down on her wrist, his fangs easily piercing the soft skin. He took a hold of Kat's jaw to keep her mouth open as he placed the now bleeding wrist between her chapped lips, letting the crimson liquid to drip down her throat. All the three of us were watching in dead silence, waiting for any kind of reaction. When she finally started to come back to her senses, now drinking the human blood without reluctance, relief washed over all the three of us.
