Prologue

RUNNING THROUGH THE WOODS at night was never a good idea. Even if you had the proper strength and knowledge to defend yourself against whatever is lurking in the shadows. Even if you could tell by scent what is the exact thing that wouldn't take its eyes of you. But who could blame the creature's interest in you, when you're already feeling the warm crimson blood dripping down your arm, signaling your postion to whatever or whoever is watching your every step.
The women came to a halt. Feeling the cold air brushing against her cheeks she started to focus on her surroundings, concentrating on the peaceful atmosphere. She couldn't hear a single thing, except, the animals of the night, especially an owl in the distance. She kept her focus and after some time she heard it. The leaves crunching under someone's feet as if it just started running in the distance. Furrowing her eyebrows she didn't move, trying to guess the exact location where the sound came from, she knew one thing for sure: it was far away.
She didn't even had time to adjust as her eyes snapped open in a little shock and a second later she found herself tossed backwards by her shoulder. The woman quickly jumped up from the ground and stood in a fighting stance, as soon as she did that, her attacker's hand swung at her, trying to punch her in the face. Quickly dodged the attack and did the same thing same she almost received in the directions of the figure. The unknown person grabbed her hand in lighting speed and twisted it behind her back, after that they tackled her to the ground with incredibly strength that could have break almost every bone in a human body if it wanted it. The figure suddenly grabbed something from their pocket and the next thing the woman knew is that she is completely pinned down, and there's a sharp stake directly at her heart.
"And boom. You're dead. You're getting slow." said a masculine voice, too close to her face to feel entirely comfortable.
"Ha. Ha." she let out a rather sarcastic laugh as she rolled her eyes. "Very funny, Atlas. And just so you know, I'm not getting slow, I'm still slow 'cause I still can't get myself together!" she shouted the last part in the mans face while her eyes started glowing red as she got more irritated by every second that passed.
"Okay-okay, no need to get loud." Atlas put his hands up in surrender as he got off of her and helped the women stand up. "I know you're still not in your best shape, that's why I'm trying to help you train. You're aware that you can't afford being weak for so long." she just let out a sigh.
"Like I don't know... And like it's my fault I'm still limited..." the woman ran her right hand through her hair while she started to walk out of the woods "I know you're trying to help, but I'm getting tired of it. Especially, when I've been like that for the past three months."
"We'll get through it." Atlas said with a sad smile, putting his left arm around her shoulders. "We always do, even if you rarely have a problem like that."
"Wasn't exactly my idea to get a hex on me." she rolled her eyes "But I did deserve it."
"And by every passing moment I'm starting to think more and more about actually staking you, Kat..." he remarked on her last sentence, but instead of getting the stake, he pinched the part of her arm that was bleeding.
"Like you could kill me... Hey! You son of a bi...!" the woman hit his arm with a great force while starting to shout profanities at him, but he covered her mouth with one hand, signaling for her to shut up and listen. It didn't take long for the both of them to hear footsteps from the porch of their house. Looking at each other they communicated with their eyes and came to an agreement: let's see who had the guts to go even near their home in the middle of the night. They were only fifty meters away, so it didn't take long to arrive at the destination, but when they saw the figure standing their, both their eyes became wide in surprise. The person on the porch noticed them immediately and let out a quite sigh in relief to see the two before him. Kat looked slightly shocked, since he never came to them before without notifying them beforehand. She could sense the strong anxiousness radiating from Derek while he gave them a somewhat bittersweet smile.
"Sorry to just barge in, but..." the piercing blue eyes were searching their owns when they suddenly stopped on Kat "We have a lot to talk about."
