ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Nate and Adaline were sitting at their favorite restaurant for date night. The Jacobs boy felt like they should take advantage of their alone time together before the baby came. Which is exactly why he decided to take her out.
So far the night had been going great. They talked about school, the future, and anything else they could think of. Adaline loved talking to Nate. She felt like he really understood her. She could tell him things that she couldn't always tell her friends.
She thought Nate would be the perfect person to get some unbiased advice about Cassie from because as far as she knew Nate had no connection to the girl.
"Have you noticed how weird Cassie's been acting recently?" Adaline asked before taking a sip of her drink. "Maddy thinks it has something to do with McKay but I'm not sure. Has he said anything to you about their relationship?"
"Oh uh no." Nate shook his head awkwardly glancing at the girl in front of him. The last thing he wanted to be talking about on their date was Cassie. "McKay and I haven't really talked since New Years."
"Did you guys get in a fight or something?"
"Nah he's just busy at school." Nate shrugged. "We're just at different places in life right now. Maybe that's what's up with you and Cassie."
"I guess I can see things between her and I being weird considering I'm pregnant. But that doesn't explain why she's being weird with Maddy."
"I don't know what to tell you Ads." Nate replied brushing her off. "Can we talk about something else?"
"What? Why?" To say Adaline was confused was an understatement. She didn't understand why Nate was all of a sudden being a dick. "I just wanted your opinion on this situation because I can't talk to anyone else about it."
"I just don't feel like talking about people I don't like while we're out on a date. I'm here for you not Maddy or Cassie."
"I don't understand what the big deal is. I'm worried about my friend and I just wanted some support from my boyfriend."
"Well I'm sorry but I could literally give two shits about why Cassie's acting weird." Nate spoke slightly raising his voice. "And honestly you shouldn't either."
"Why the hell not? She's my friend!"
"You think she'd be this worried about you?" The Jacobs boy scoffed shaking his head. "Cassie only cares about her appearance and the next guy she can trap into being her boyfriend."
"What the fuck is your problem with her?" Adaline questioned.
"I just don't like her." The boy countered. "You shouldn't be friends with someone that has such little respect for themselves."
"Wow!" She exclaimed with wide eyes. "I can't believe you."
"It's not like it's a lie. Everyone knows what kind of girl she is. You don't need to be brought down by her."
"You're such a fucking jerk." The brunette snapped getting up from the table. Nate sighed watching her storm away.
"Fuck!" He cursed running to catch up with her.
When Nate exited the restaurant he looked around for Adaline. He spotted her standing by his truck on her phone attempting to call someone.
"Ads come on. I'm sorry!" He sighed gently grabbing her arm. "I didn't mean to snap on you. I just have a lot of shit on my mind."
"That's the problem Nate!" The small girl yelled. "You say you have stuff going on but you don't tell me! You just keep it all bottled up until you explode and I'm always the one that gets hurt!"
"I know and I'm sorry. I just don't want to upset you."
"I want you to be honest with me Nate." Adaline said softly. "I tell you everything even if I know you'll get mad. I just want you to do the same with me."
"I'll try. I promise from now on I'll try." The boy nodded.
"Okay so what has you so stressed out that you just snapped at me?" Adaline demanded raising a brow at the boy's pale face.
"I um" He stuttered not knowing what to stay.
Was he really about to reveal his big secret?
Nate thought about lying to her but the look on Adaline's face had him rethinking that decision. He thought now was a better time than any to tell her. Nate knew if he waited any longer he'd end up not telling her at all. The longer he waited the worse it would ultimately be in the end.
"I kissed someone else." The words flew out of the boy's mouth before he had a chance to stop himself.
Nate watched Adaline's face closely. He could see the moment his words registered in her mind. He could see the betrayal, the hurt, and the anger.
"When?"
"New Years." He replied quickly feeling the need to explain more. He needed her to understand that it meant nothing to him. "I was drunk and angry. It was after our fight. I know being drunk isn't an excuse. I fucked up and I know that."
"Who was she?"
"No one important." Nate insisted noticing the tears falling down her cheeks. "I swear it didn't mean anything to me. I thought it was you until I snapped out of it."
"Did anything else happen?"
"No! We kissed for a couple of minutes before I realized what I was doing and stopped it."
"I want to go." She mumbled turning away from him. "Take me home."
And so he did. The car ride home was silent. Neither of them knew what to say. Adaline knew that if she tried to talk to him she'd end up flipping out and saying something she'd later end up regretting. She also didn't want to get herself worked up and possibly hurt the baby. So she stayed quiet.
Nate on the other hand was praying that she'd say something. He hated how quiet she was being. He would rather her sit there and scream at him. At least then she'd be speaking to him.
While Adaline was trying to think of who the girl could possibly be. Nate was occupied with thoughts of how he could fix this. How was he going to get Adaline to forgive him?
