A Chat With Queen Scarlet

01:38, 29 May 2022

It was a few days until Kestrel and Soar's egg was due to hatch.

It was a big egg, the biggest in... well, a long time. It had twins inside.

And of the dragonets inside... one would have too little fire. The other would have too much.

"The dragonet will have to be killed. A pity," Queen Scarlet stated with a careless shrug of her wings. "After all, that is SkyWing tradition." She had been hoping for more soldiers who followed her orders, unlike the useless worms she had. Most of them always asked questions and wanted to do more than what they were told, and it was aggravating to Queen Scarlet.

She and Kestrel were in the throne room. It was morning, the sunlight shining on the gold in the floor, blinding everyone but her queenly self.

"And you must not have more dragonets," Queen Scarlet added, though she knew Kestrel already knew all of this.

Kestrel didn't like that. Not one bit. Well, she didn't care for more dragonets, (two were more than enough) but she wanted to know the ones she was going to have. She didn't want them to be killed before they even knew what it was like to fly. Kestrel wanted her dragonets to die in an honorable way, in a battle, or when they were old and had had a nice, long life.

These dreams weren't going to happen, though, because one of them had too much fire. Why? thought Kestrel. Why did it have to be a firescales? We could have had a life together, and I could have taught them to fight, and we could've fought side-by-side. Like... like a family.

Kestrel shook herself in disgust. She was not a sentimental idiot who would cry over a few deaths.

"Fine," Kestrel snapped angrily.

"Tsk, tsk, tsk," Queen Scarlet clucked disapprovingly. "My, my, Kestrel, have  you forgotten how to speak to your queen?"

"I am sorry, Your Majesty," Kestrel replied, this time being careful to guard her tone.

Queen Scarlet regarded Kestrel for a moment. "That is all. You are dismissed."

Kestrel exited the room, seething. Smoke was rising from her snout, though Kestrel was clearly trying to hide it. Queen Scarlet was left alone in the room, examining her claws as if she were bored.

Queen Scarlet did not suspect that Kestrel was going to disobey her. Why would she? Kestrel had always followed the Queen's orders, no questions asked.

But Kestrel did not want to lose these dragonets. She wanted them to live, enough that she'd do anything to protect them. Kestrel knew that she shouldn't have gotten attached to them. They weren't even born, for moon's sake! But she had, and there was no going back now.
