Shadows at the Border

Sen's POV

It was a beautiful day. I was finally back on missions like every other shinobi. It felt as though the entire village had been on vacation for a couple of weeks - but now, everything was returning to its usual rhythm.Today was one of my rare free days, so Kushina-shishu and I decided to train together - a proper spar and some technique practice.

"Hmm... so you want to run a scenario where you're being chased by enemy shinobi, right, Sen?" Kushina asked, stretching a few feet away from me.

We hadn't trained together in a while, so it felt nice to have this time again.

"Yes, Shishu. I want to push my Shunshin speed until it's sharper - faster than most shinobi's," I replied, doing my own stretches.

She nodded, her expression turning thoughtful as she tied her long red hair higher into a ponytail.

"Alright then. Let's say I'm an S-rank shinobi chasing you. You're heading back toward Konoha, low on chakra - too drained to fight, maybe outnumbered. That sound about right?"

"Exactly!" I grinned. She understood me perfectly.

Kushina thought for a moment, then performed a quick set of hand signs. A puff of smoke later, she had transformed into a rugged, bearded shinobi - at least six feet tall, with a wild look and a scowl that could send anyone running.

"Let's make it more real, dattebane!" she said with a smirk. "Level one - there's only one enemy shinobi. For level two, I'll use shadow clones. Multiple pursuers, so you'll have to think on your feet."

"I'm ready," I said, adjusting my stance.

She didn't even give a countdown - in a blink, she moved, and the chase began.

We darted across the training grounds just outside Konoha, the wind whipping past our ears as we dashed between the trees. My focus was razor-sharp - I needed to perfect my Shunshin, make it seamless, silent, and fast enough to vanish before her eyes.

Hours passed in a blur of speed, laughter, and quick adjustments. We switched roles halfway through; I chased the "enemy" with my full speed, but I couldn't even brush her sleeve. And yet, when she chased me, I always managed to slip away at the last second.

By sunset, both of us were exhausted and covered in dust, sitting under a tree catching our breath.

Kushina chuckled softly, wiping sweat from her brow. "Not bad, Sen. You've gotten faster. I almost lost track of you back there."

I smiled, still panting lightly. "Almost? That means I still have work to do."

She grinned, her voice warm. "You've got plenty of time to beat even me, dattebane."

We both laughed - the kind of laughter that only came from shared effort and trust. The day had been long, but fulfilling. My Shunshin had improved - and training with Kushina-shishu always reminded me why I loved being a kunoichi.

I was back at the Anbu headquarters where our team had just been assigned another mission. Everyone was present - Deer-taichou, Raven, Beetle, Dove, and me - Fox.Raven, of course, was Shisui.

Deer-taichou stood in front of us, his voice calm but steady as ever. "Everyone, this is an A-rank mission with a high possibility of escalating to S-rank. Our objective is to gather information on a syndicate operating in the northwest region of the Fire Country - near Kusa. We don't have much intel, but they've been moving between Kusa and Taki, and there's a strong chance they've crossed into Fire territory.

Our mission is strictly reconnaissance - no unnecessary engagement. I hope it doesn't turn into an S-rank situation, but if it does, we move accordingly. The assignment will take roughly two full days and nights, so pack for endurance and stealth. We meet at the North Gate in two hours. Clear?"

"Yes, Taichou," we replied in unison, our voices echoing slightly against the metal-lined walls of the briefing room.

I returned to my quarters and began packing. My scrolls were already sealed and stocked - but I prepared two empty ones, just in case we needed to bring something unexpected back. Extra ration pills, water seals, chakra bandages... everything double-checked.The Anbu never left room for mistakes.

Two hours later, we gathered at the North Gate, masks on, silence our only companion. The air was cool, carrying the faint scent of pine as we began our journey toward Kusa. We stayed within the Fire Country's borders for as long as possible, passing several konoha patrol teams along the way. Everything seemed ordinary - too ordinary, perhaps.

B

y the time we reached the border, night was setting in. The forest around us was dense and quiet, the kind of silence that presses against your skin. We set up camp within minutes - concealed by a genjutsu barrier reinforced with my fuinjutsu seals. Only our team would be able to sense the perimeter's true form.

There were no caves nearby, so Beetle used Earth Release to carve out a base room beneath a low ridge. It was small but sturdy - enough for the five of us to rest and plan.

At dawn, we regrouped.

"Fox, Raven, and I will scout ahead," Deer-taichou ordered, his tone measured. "Beetle and Dove, guard the camp. Keep the perimeter undisturbed."

We nodded silently. Shisui and I fell into formation behind him, our steps light and practiced.

The forest canopy filtered soft morning light over our masks. Every sound - every rustle of leaves, every shift in chakra - was noted. We stayed low, avoiding direct paths, moving like shadows through the mist.

"We keep our distance," Deer-taichou murmured. "We don't know their numbers, their hierarchy, or their goal. For now, we observe. No confrontation unless necessary."

"Understood," Shisui replied quietly.

Following his instructions, I crouched beside a mossy trunk and formed a single hand sign. A faint shimmer of chakra pulsed from my palm as the earth beneath me stirred - then, tiny black ants began to emerge, swarming across the roots in organized lines.

Within moments, I had summoned an entire colony. Their senses were linked to mine through a low-level tracking seal - enough for me to see what they saw.

"Scouts are in motion," I whispered. "They'll reach the syndicate's makeshift camp soon."

Deer-taichou gave a single nod. "Good. We wait here."

So we did - crouched in the forest shadows, silent, steady, and ready. The mission had begun.

A couple of hours later, the colony returned. One by one, the ants desummoned - vanishing in faint wisps of chakra - until only their leader, Dei, remained. He was the size of a full-grown watermelon, his black carapace gleaming faintly in the dim light of the forest .

He looked at each of us before turning his many eyes toward me. His voice echoed directly in my mind - calm but urgent.

"The group consists of around twenty individuals. People were also coming and going from the compound. The entire area is under a powerful genjutsu barrier. Most of the shinobi appear to be A- or B-rank rogues. Only two among them are S-rank. They spoke about obtaining more children and sending them to their 'masters.' The purpose remains unknown, Sen-san."

I relayed every word of Dei's report to Deer-taichou. His expression didn't waver, but his chakra flickered faintly - the kind of still reaction that spoke of concern.

"Understood," he said. "Dismiss Dei. We'll return to camp and plan from there."

I nodded and performed the seal to release him. Dei's massive form shimmered, then dissolved into chakra dust, returning to his realm.

When we reached our secured compound, Beetle and Dove had already lit a small, controlled fire. The soft glow painted the interior walls of our earth shelter in warm orange hues. We sat in a circle, the silence heavy until Deer-taichou spoke.

"The group appears to be involved in child trafficking," he began, his tone grim. "We don't yet know who their leaders are or where their main base is located. Our objective is to find that base so the next team can move in for elimination. This situation is serious - and it looks like it spans multiple nations.

Right now, we're barely inside Fire Country. Kusa and Taki's borders are only a few kilometers away. It's likely that other cells are operating in those regions as well."

Everyone went silent. The implications were clear - this wasn't going to be a short-term assignment anymore.

Our mission was meant to last less than a week, but we couldn't leave without finding out where the children were being taken.

Raven was the first to speak. "So that means... they might be moving the kids out of the camp to a separate base?"

Deer-taichou gave a single approving nod. "You're right, Raven. Our priority now is to monitor and track their movements. If we attack the camp directly, there's a high risk their 'masters' will be alerted. That could cause them to relocate or cover their tracks."

We all understood what that meant - the operation was bigger than any of us had imagined.

And if the syndicate moved their base again... it would vanish without a trace.

Over the next four days, we took turns watching the syndicate's camp. People came and went at odd hours, but there was still no sign of the children.

On the fifth day, three A-rank shinobi emerged from the compound - and this time, the genjutsu surrounding the area was heavier, almost suffocating. There was no subtle way to dispel it without revealing ourselves.

Dove and I exchanged a look, then silently followed them as they moved into the forest.

I quickly summoned Dei again, crouching behind a boulder as his large form materialized."Go to Taichou," I whispered. "Tell him it's urgent."

Dei nodded and disappeared instantly into the ground.

Another idea clicked in my mind. I summoned Yume, a tiny, near-invisible summon barely the size of my fingernail."Tag one of them and report back," I instructed. She chirped once and vanished on a breeze.

Dove and I tailed the group for barely half a kilometer before Taichou, Raven, and Beetle caught up with us - silent, fast, and alert. One glance from Deer-taichou told me he'd reached the same conclusion we had:

Whatever they were transporting, they did not want anyone to see.

I signed to him that Yume was gathering intel. He acknowledged with a nod, and the four of us continued trailing from a significant distance, chakra suppressed to near zero.

A few minutes later, Yume desummoned directly beside my left ear - her tiny voice urgent.

"There are five children... all different ages. They're under a genjutsu, running without resistance. They look... blank. Tranced."

My jaw tightened. I relayed the number of children to Taichou with hand-signs.

He responded immediately: "We continue tailing. No engagement until we find the base."

So we followed - for hours. The rogues moved fast, slipping across the border into Taki. They stayed close to the Fire Country line but never stepped into our territory again. Eventually, they slowed... then stopped.

We hid high in the trees as they vanished into thin air.

Another genjutsu. And beneath it - the base.

I closed my eyes, focusing, and sensed three shinobi stationed right at the entrance. I hadn't scanned deeper yet.

Taichou gave the order to retreat a safe distance. We regrouped and set up a concealed observation camp with earth-style walls and multiple layered genjutsu.

Once everything was secured, Taichou turned to me.

"Fox," he murmured, voice low and steady, "I want you to scan the entire cave system. Get me a count of how many shinobi are inside - and whatever else you can find."

He looked at the rest of the team."While Fox scans, be ready. We don't know what's waiting in there."

"Hai, Taichou," we answered quietly in unison.

I moved to the far corner of our makeshift base, sat down cross-legged, and let my chakra settle.

Then I began the deep scan.

Over the last few years, my sensing abilities had been steadily developing, and the radius of my perception kept widening. It was always easier to sense in a plain village like Konoha or in open terrain, but caves were an entirely different challenge. One could never afford to waste chakra by accidentally sensing the cave walls. It required precise concentration - you had to focus directly on the passages alone.

I sank deeper into my focus. I started from the entrance. Just like before, I sensed three B-rank shinobi guarding it, and the entrance itself felt like it had an iron gate. The passage beyond zigzagged-never a straight line-before opening up into an inner courtyard. There was natural wind flowing through it... meaning the cave had a second, uncovered entrance from above. That was something we hadn't expected at all.

From the courtyard, two separate passages branched off. Along the corridors, several small rooms lined both sides. I counted three shinobi in each cluster, most likely resting or keeping watch. Moving further, the passages continued, with more rooms and more rogue shinobi. And then I sensed a larger chamber-crowded with people far younger than the nins. Children. That had to be the makeshift prison.

More rooms followed-more rogue nins, more captives.

Then I felt it. A cold, unmistakable chill in my chakra.

Root.

Even without their original seals, I could sense the remnants - that oppressive, twisted residue was impossible to mistake. These were the same rogue Root operatives Konoha had never managed to locate. The situation had just grown significantly more serious.

I continued scanning and found another courtyard. This one was sealed from above and filled entirely with nins.

When I finally pulled myself out of sensing, the whole team was already waiting for me.

"Tell us, Fox. What did you see?" Taichu ordered quietly.

I relayed everything I found. Every detail. They listened in complete silence.

"There are also rogue Root operatives inside the cave," I finished, voice steady.

Taichu tensed immediately. I could sense Raven-Shisui-go rigid as well.

"This whole operation is turning out to be much larger than we expected," Beetle muttered.

"Raven," Taichu said, "summon your crow and send it to the Hokage. Relay everything Fox has reported."

Shisui didn't waste a second. He summoned a crow and repeated every detail to it. The bird took flight, heading straight toward Konoha.

"It'll take him couple of hours to reach," Shisui said.

"We'll set parameters and guard our camp for now," Taichu decided. "Our task here is complete. The execution team will handle the next phase. But if needed, we stay ready."

All any of us could do now was wait for the Hokage's reply.

Two hours after the crow had been sent, we remained on watch. Beetle and I were taking the first shift while the others rested. That was when I sensed something I hadn't expected at all.

The chakra level approaching was enormous - only comparable to a Jinchūriki. Which one, I wasn't sure yet.

"Upcoming shinobi. Possible Jinchūriki. Alert everyone," I signed quickly to Beetle.

The Jinchūriki was about ten kilometers away. Judging by his trajectory, he was either heading straight for the cave... or he would pass directly between our camp and the syndicate's hideout.

"What is it?" Taichu appeared with Dove and Raven right behind him.

"Incoming Jinchūriki," I reported, keeping my voice level.

Taichu exhaled slowly. "This mission just became S-rank..."

We all felt the same shock.

I repeated everything I had sensed so far.

"So there's a chance he or she is just traveling," Taichu said. "There have been rumors of Jinchūrikis going off-grid lately. Iwa's Jinchūriki went missing too. We don't know what the syndicate will do if they encounter one. Stay alert. We cannot attack the Jinchūriki - that would drag us into international political chaos we're not prepared for."

"Taichu, if the Jinchūriki is an adult, they'll sense us the moment they activate their cloaked state," Dove pointed out.

"I'm aware," Taichu replied. "Right now all the nations distrust each other. We don't know how a rogue Jinchūriki would react to enemy-country shinobi. If they detect us, our first priority is retreat. Is that clear? This team is surveillance level. Raven and I have the most war experience here - if we're forced to fight a Jinchūriki and a syndicate that includes Root remnants, the chances of casualties are extremely high. Retreating is survival."

"Hai, Captain," we answered.

Beetle and I were best suited for long-distance spying thanks to our summons. As an Aburame, he could eliminate enemies silently with his insects. Captain and Shisui were our offensive pillars, while Dove excelled in close-range combat. All things considered, retreat really was the smartest plan.

"Uh... Captain," I said slowly, "I'm sensing someone following the Jinchūriki."

Taichu turned to me immediately. "Can you identify who?"

I closed my eyes again, expanding my sensing range past the Jinchūriki's position.

"It's definitely an S-rank shinobi... traveling alone."

"The only reason an S-rank would tail a Jinchūriki is for the bounty," Dove muttered.

"But who would even dare fight a Jinchūriki head-on?"

Oh boy.

We were doomed.

There was only one shinobi insane enough - and powerful enough - to hunt a Jinchūriki alone.

Kakuzu.

I focused deeper. The moment I sensed them, my stomach dropped.

Five hearts. Active. Controlled.

"Kakuzu," I said quietly. "The shinobi is controlling five hearts - his signature ability. He once fought Shodai Hashirama."

Taichu blinked. "Wouldn't that make him over a hundred years old?"

Shisui didn't question me. He already knew how and why I knew these things.

"Technically yes," I said, "but biologically he'd remain whatever age he was when he acquired that technique. What matters is that each of his hearts has a different elemental chakra nature. Meaning if we encounter him, we'll be fighting all five elements simultaneously. He is or was part of a cult that performed that type of bodily modifications. "

"Well," Raven exhaled with a humorless chuckle, "so we're potentially facing rogue Root, the syndicate, a Jinchūriki, and Kakuzu. What are the odds..."

"I say we start retreating now before we get caught in a Jinchūriki crossfire," Dove said, laughing nervously.

"Just pray we don't run into another S-rank."

Famous last words.

Minato's POV

The day had barely begun. I had just settled into my office chair when an operative slipped in through the window.

"Hokage-sama, Commander requests your presence at the base immediately. Hall 6."

I stood without hesitation. "Let's go."

A flash of hiraishin later, I stepped into the hidden ANBU headquarters and entered Hall 6.

Commander Dan Kaito was already there in his commander's cape. Teams Ro and Ko were lined up before him, their masks gleaming under the dim lights.

"Hokage-sama," Dan began, voice heavy, "we have an urgent situation. Team Deer was sent on a potential A-rank mission to monitor an emerging syndicate near the borders of Kusa, Taki, and Fire Country. I've just received Raven's message - the syndicate is far larger and more dangerous than expected. They are trafficking children. The missing Root operatives are confirmed to be involved."

Both teams stiffened. An A-rank could become S-rank instantly if Team Deer engaged the Root. And if Root discovered that Sen was part of Team Deer... they would pursue her without mercy.

Right now, our strongest tactical units against Root were Team Ro and Team Ko. We had many S-rank shinobi in the village, but Ro and Ko had specific experience battling Root's methods.

"Send Team Ro and Ko immediately," I ordered. "We can't waste even a moment. I'll have additional forces follow shortly."

With that, I left the compound and hiraishin'd back to my office, summoning Shikaku and Orochimaru at once.

Within minutes, both stood before my desk.

It might seem excessive to send them... but if Root identified Sen, they would come for her specifically. And I would not allow that.

"Shikaku, Orochimaru," I greeted them. They bowed.

"There's a potential international crisis. Team Deer's mission has escalated into an S-rank. Team Ro and Ko are already en route as backup, but I need both of you to follow them. The syndicate they've uncovered includes the missing Root operatives, and child trafficking is confirmed. This is happening at the Kusa-Taki border. If battle breaks out, both nations will know." I paused. "You two will handle diplomacy."

Shikaku's eyes sharpened. He understood the unspoken part - Sen was out there, and Root was involved.

Orochimaru remained silent, analyzing. As a Sannin, he was our trump card; his presence alone could turn the tide of the battlefield.

"Hokage-sama," Orochimaru asked smoothly, "does that mean I may bring any Root bodies back to Konoha... for post-mortem examination?"

"Yes. Avoid excessive dismemberment if you can," I replied. "There are still many secrets those operatives may be hiding. They were Danzō's elite."

They both nodded.

Shikaku and Orochimaru then discussed possible diplomatic scenarios. We needed to prevent escalation - to avoid unnecessary conflict with Kusa or Taki. Cooperation would be ideal, though... perhaps wishful thinking.

▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎ Okay guys, fasten your seat belts - the next chapter is going to be even more chaotic than the Root vs. Sen situation. There are multiple parties involved, and a wildcard will be entering the battle too. 😉

Anyone who correctly guesses the wildcard entry will be written into the story! Yes, that means there will be a slice-of-life scene with the whole gang, and the winner will appear in that scene. 🩷

You have until I post the next chapter - sometime in November. If you're lucky, I might even drop it next week. No fixed schedule though!

Rule:If multiple people guess the wildcard, the first person to comment it wins. That's it. Enjoy this arc - there's going to be a lot of flashy fighting. ✨🔥
