The Many Jobs of The Nurse

23:57, 27 May 2025

"Did I see one of those federal agents drop you off this morning? I swear, he looks so familiar,"  Alyssa, your favorite co-worker/work wife, casually remarks in the med room. "Sort of looks like Dean...and doesn't he have a cute brother also?" Alyssa's side grin peeks through her dark hair as she checked her meds off. She rambles a few words in Spanish and fans herself as she continues on about the cute brother. You take a glance over your shoulder to make sure no one is coming inside then give her a smirk. Her eyes light up.

"Yes, so shh, I told you he works for the government awhile back, remember? Well, it just so happens that he and his partner got assigned to the weird shit that has been happening around here," you said in a hushed tone. She does her best to contain her excitement. "Alyssa, you cannot say anything, especially to—,"

"You know I won't, especially to him," Alyssa arched a perfectly shaped brow, placing her hand on your forearm.  Her blue eyes switch to the door then up to the camera in the corner of the ceiling. She turns her back to it. "You know how I feel about Dr. Campbell. I think he's a great doctor, you know? Just something about him on a personal level gives me bad vibes," Alyssa practically whispered her thoughts on Ryan. "You also need to finally introduce me to those boys. Last time they were in town I was sick with Covid, remember?"

Alyssa is a nurse you have become close to over the last year of her working at the hospital. She never met Sam and Dean. She has heard more stories about them, especially Dean, than she can count. Sam and Dean agreed to meet her when they last visit but she tested positive for Covid the day before they arrived in town. Alyssa sees your feelings for Dean, just simply by the way you talk about him. She has encouraged you to just up and leave Sioux Falls to go be with him despite what he says that the two of you cannot be together. You can't do that to yourself... or to Dean.

Another nurse comes into the med room pausing when she sees you and Alyssa off to the side. She sends a half-smile your way then heads to the machine to pull out medications. Alyssa tilts her head toward the door. The two of you grab what you need and leave the med room. Whispers float between the two of you while you head to your mobile computers in order for morning med pass to begin. As you are about to head into your first patient's room, you hear Dean's voice coming up the opposite hall. You then hear a woman's voice, full of giggles and high-pitched, that makes you cringe.

"Ay, dios mío," Alyssa murmured from the door to her patient's room next to your own patient. Her eyes go wide recognizing Dean as she stares at the scene coming up behind you. "Mija, please tell me you're medicated." Tilting your head, you narrow your eyes at Alyssa. She puts her hands up. "Just checking," she mustered a laugh as she walked into her patient's room.

You focus on getting your medications together for your patient. Dean's boots become louder the closer they get to you. The moment his hand touches the back of your arm giving you goosebumps is short-lived. Before you can turn around, the nurse tagging along with Dean decides to ask him if he can show her ways on how to protect herself—a private one on one demonstration. You let out a low growl. You spin around on your heel and give her a hard glare. Dean lowers his head and darkly chuckles.

"Misty, hey...just fill me in here," you step around Dean and put yourself between him and Misty. She rolls her make-up heavy eyes. "We work in a hospital, right? You're a nurse, yeah?"

"Argh, stop playing games and move out the way so I can finish giving my number to this wonderful agent," Misty's hungry eyes peer over your shoulders while giving Dean a flirty wave.

"Oh, I see, so today you are playing the role of trailer trash—,"

"And I think it's time I finish my interview from yesterday with Miss (Y/N)," Dean wraps a strong hand around your upper arm to pull you away from the impending cat fight. He brings you around the corner away from prying eyes. His body presses against your's that is held up by the cold hospital wall.

Dean leans back just enough to place a hand on the wall beside you. He ducks his head and whispers next to your ear. "Ma'am, do I need to remind you that we are in a hospital?" Dean rears his head back only allowing a couple of inches of space between your lips. His sinful green eyes drop to your perfectly shaped mouth that begs for him to swallow you up in a passionate kiss.

He can't. He won't. Dean won't let you cheat on your boyfriend—which is why he pushes off the wall and puts a few more inches between the two of you. He nods at a couple of young nursing students quickly walking by trying not to stare.

Crossing your arms over your chest with a huff, you throw a heated glare at the nurse from afar being a thorn in your side at the moment. She continues to taunt you by blowing Dean a kiss.

"Perfect, then trailer trash Barbie can easily go down to the ER once I am finished with her," the words spew like hatred from your mouth that Dean is drawn to again. This time, however, he places a finger against your lips right as he notices you pushing off the wall.

You freeze.

Withdrawing his tactic to silence you, Dean then leans forward again alongside your right ear. You can feel your breathing increase at anticipation of what he will say. You know you should put a halt to Dean's flirting but...you enjoy it despite you having a boyfriend.

"Behave, sweetheart. Remember...," Dean paused with a low, dark chuckle. "I have no problem taking you out of here in handcuffs." Dean slowly leans away with his arms crossed over his chest as his eyes did their best not to focus on the hint of cleavage appearing from your navy-colored scrubs. His heated gaze sends a warm feeling between your thighs, causing you to clench them together. Dean glances down and notices before flickering his heated gaze back up at you with a cocky grin.

The two of you lock eyes and all the sounds around you begin to fade. His calloused fingers carefully lift the silver necklace around your neck. The grazing of his fingertips along your skin hitches the breath in your throat. Tilting his head, he notices it is the same necklace he gave you a few years back when you visited the boys at the bunker.

Flashback—2017

At the bunker, you sit next to Dean on his bed watching a movie late one night. The space between you and him became obsolete as the night progressed with now being shoulder to shoulder sitting against the headboard. The two of you laugh and catch up with what's been going on with one another since Dean last came to Sioux Falls about six months ago. The last couple of phone calls with Dean prior to your arrival you could pick up on something different in his voice. That is when you discover his mother was back from the dead. Your head felt like it was about to explode with all the information Dean dumped on you after the two of you were finally alone at the bunker.

"Oh, I have something for you," Dean's eyes light up as he dusted the crumbs off his hands from the pizza the two of you shared. He stretches his arm over to the nightstand and opens up the drawer. "Close your eyes," he said over his shoulder.

You do as he asks and wait anxiously. "Turn a little, sweetheart," Dean places his hand on your hip and gently turns you for your back to be facing him. His fingers brush back your hair, slowly dragging over the nape of your neck. He lowly chuckles seeing the goosebumps appear on your skin. You then feel cool metal drape around your neck. With a gentle kiss to your skin, Dean then whispers that you can open your eyes.

Glancing down, you gently grasp the silver necklace holding three gems. You gasp realizing the three colors represented his and Sam's birthstones as well as your's in the middle of the two.

"This is our birthstones. How did you—,"

"On our last hunt, I saw a little shop that had it in the window. I don't know, just figured it was there so maybe I should get it incase I never see something like that again," Dean sheepishly grinned with a half-shrug. "You like it?"

You lean forward and kiss his cheek. Pulling away, you find yourself barely a couple inches from his lips. Your eyes flutter up and catch the sultry gaze staring at you. "I love it, thank you," you said quietly, your throat suddenly feeling dry.

The two of you stare at one another for several seconds before Dean pulls away. He scoots back against the headboard and pats the mattress beside him. With a weak smile, you sit beside him toying with the necklace between your fingers. Dean rests his hand on your leg and takes a glimpse at you that you pretend not to see. You didn't want to look back at him right now—not with how you felt just moments ago.

"I cannot believe I did not notice this on you earlier," Dean murmured. His fingers rub the three stones between them before laying the necklace gently back on your chest.

"I wear it more often than you know," you said lowly as you glanced down at the piece of jewelry. When your eyes lift up again, you catch Dean's eyes smiling for him. "I do, it reminds me of the family I have," you admitted in a soft tone.

It's quiet between you and Dean except for the faded noises in the background filling the hospital air. With your heart thudding against your chest, you cannot help to wonder what Dean would do if you asked him to take you home tonight and not to leave. The moment between you and Dean has your heart aching for him more and more.

That is until the overhead speaker announces a code blue that snaps you out of the trance Dean held you in. You shake your head and push off the wall. "Shit, gotta go. Call me later, yeah?" You said as you began to walk backwards a couple steps keeping your eyes locked with him before turning around taking off down the hallway.

Dean shoves his hands in his pockets as he slowly follows behind the few medical staff rushing down to the room that they are needed in. He comes to a halt outside the room where the code was called. Dean leans on the corner of the glass window watching you and the others perform the code like a rhythmic dance. He watched with awe how you worked with the other nurses and a couple other medical professionals attempt to keep the man from going with the Angel of Death.

"It isn't always like a tv show...," Dean hears a female voice behind him, unsure if it is directed at him or a couple of the other onlookers from the hallway. With his arms still tightly crossed over his chest, he glances over his shoulder before fully turning around. "It's not always chaotic like they make it seem sometimes, you know. It can be, but sometimes depending on who is running the code, it can go pretty smoothly." She nods, slipping her hands in her back scrub pants pockets.

Dean's mouth parts slightly as he slowly nods. "Do I know..." his green eyes squint as he tries to put a name to the familiar dark-haired brunette with tattoos visible on her arms.

"Alyssa...(Y/N)'s bestie, work wife, whatever," she nervously laughed sticking out her hand. "We've never formally met."

Dean gives her an "a-ha" moment realizing who it is. He shakes her hand stepping closer to the young woman. "Yeah, yeah...Alyssa. I've heard a story or two about you," Dean chuckled. "You are a little wild from what (Y/N) has told me but she sure does adore you."

Alyssa smirks with a half-shrug. His eyes jump over to the hospital room hearing a different kind of tone take over the scene. He observes the energy surrounding the hospital bed. The sudden drop of your shoulders as you tilt your head towards the ceiling has Dean realize what has happened. He swears he sees you mouth thank you, Jack, making the corner of Dean's mouth curve upward.

"Well, lookie there—another life saved," Alyssa commented as her eyes pointed towards the room. She catches you take a glimpse over at Dean with a shy grin. "You know, that's beauty and brains right there," Alyssa watched how Dean stared at you for several seconds in a way no other man has stared at you before.

Not even Ryan.

Dean huffs out a laugh, glancing between you and Alyssa. "What can I say? I have a thing for smart chicks," Dean winked, stepping away from the room with his hands shoved in his pockets to head the opposite direction. Thoughts of you and him come to mind, but not in the sexual nature. Ones that he has to keep buried because he believes he is not good enough for someone like you. Dean knows you have dreams furthering your education by becoming a nurse practitioner. That's why he has pushed you into dating anyone you mention, especially the latest front runner, The Doctor. Running footsteps come up behind Dean interrupting his torturous thoughts has him paused and spin on his heel.

"How long will you be in town? You and your handsome partner," slowing down her increased breathing from running down the hall, Alyssa shoots Dean a smirk. He notices how she arched a brow with a shit eating grin when she said the word partner knowing it is also his brother. Dean glances around with his mouth sort of parted as he tries to find the words. "Look, I think the four of us should hang out before you head back to good ol' Kansas," she snorted, crossing her arms over her chest. Alyssa observes Dean's hesitancy as he glances away. She knows how you feel about Dean and it is obvious how he feels about you. Dean cannot help but to roll his eyes at Alyssa teasing grin.

"You look as if you are in need for some TLC that only a nurse can offer, just saying," Alyssa rocked back on a hip and crossed her arms over her chest. "You aren't fooling anyone. You need some time with (Y/N) before it's too late."

Dean steps back from Alyssa. He places his hands on his hips and scoffs. He stares at her but before he can ask her to clarify, another code blue is called overhead. "Fuck, the hospital loves to pick a day to pile it on. Anyways, Agent," Alyssa sharply salutes him and spins on her heel to run off in the opposite direction. Dean shoves his hands back in his pockets and begins to disappear from the unit. Alyssa's words play on repeat in his head.

"...before it's too late."
