Chapter 6: Let The Games Begin
03:05, 8 April 2025"This is a wild game of survival.."~~~~~
Two days later you were released from the hospital wing with nobody but Mrs.Figgs to take you home. Just in time for the hunger games. Now you were standing in the auditorium with Coriolanus as lively chatter erupted in the room.
"How are you feeling?" Coriolanus asked grabbing her hand to see if the cuts are gone.
"Yeah.. I'm fine.. how are you doing? Are you ready for today.." Emme asked with the concern sketched on her eyebrows.
"How ready can one be?" He asked in slight humourless tone.
Emme gave him a small smile before squeezing his hand lightly a quiet way of telling him it's all going to be okay. Which he gave a small smile before Dean Highbottom came up to you.
"That friend of yours. Plinth. You might wanna find him a seat near the door." He muttered to the both of you before walking off. Emme gave Coriolanus a confused look as he shrugged his shoulders.
"Coryo. Emme." Sejanus said coming over to the pair.
"Hey." Coriolanus replied in a monotone voice. Emme gave a small smile nodding her head in acknowledgment.
"How you two doing? You both all right?" Sejanus asked.
"Better." Coriolanus said.
"Fine." Emme replied giving light smile.
"Hey! Over here, please." A man with a camera said to the three of you.. Coriolanus in the middle with Sejanus on his right and Emme on his left with his arm around her.
"Great thanks." The camera man said before walking away.
"Tell me this will be over quickly." Sejanus said.
"Um.. goodluck I guess." Emme said before heading to her seat before one last squeeze of their connected hands before letting go.
As Emme watched the screen the tributes were being pulled into the arena. Her eyebrows furrowed softly at Dills coughing.
"Here we go. Here we go, everyone." Lucky Flickerman announced.
"Come on. Come on, let's go. Sit down, Festus, come on." He demanded as he got ready for his 'show'.
"Everyone, as you know, we're about to go live. Just because you're not hosting, doesn't mean you're off the hook. Help me. Don't get lost behind your screens. No yawning, no gum chewing. Keep your chins down, heads up, shoulders back. And smile. It's why we have teeth." He instructed and Emme rolled her eyes at his melancholy comments.
"Okay. Ready? We're gonna start, guys. Five, four, three, two..." He asked as he started his 'show'. Dramatic Orchestra played
"Good morning, I'm Lucretius "Lucky" Flickerman. A man who needs no introduction. Weatherman, amateur magician, and today, I'm honored to say... first ever host of the Hunger Games." Lucky announced as students cheered and applauded. All Emme could do was think of Dill how bad and guilty she felt for her.
"In my hand, an envelope, sealed. My prediction, the winner to be opened by me upon the big show's end.-" Big drums began to bang which instructed that the tributes have arrived.
"Well, well... They're here. We're getting word... All right, we're about to start. We're starting, everyone, we're starting. Happy Hunger Games. Happy Hunger..." Lucky said rushing to the front. "Remember, when your tribute dies, get out of here." Some students scoffed at that.
Emme leaned a bit closer to find Dill and Reaper but her eyes froze in horror of what came up onto the screen.
"Ooh! Marcus." It was Marcus hanging off a piece of the arena already looking dead. Emme put her hand over her mouth her eyes widened in shock at the scene as students started chatting amongst themselves.
"Guess we can all sleep better now knowing he's off the streets.." Lucky said which made Emme scoff.
"You're monsters!" Sejanus yelled throwing his chair which made Emme jump slightly. "All of you!"
He then ran out Emme began to stand up before a tug at her hand made her sit back down. She looked over eyebrows furrowed and eyes slightly wide to see Coriolanus shake his head. She hesitated for a moment before a squeeze of her hand had her sit back down. And the countdown began.
"four, three... two, one." Lucky said as a loud alarm went off.
"Run." Coriolanus whispered as he watched Lucy Gray.
Emme was found Jessup protecting Dill rounding around her like a protective lion to its babe to keep it out of harms way and to make sure that nobody would hurt her.
"Jessup!" Emme watched Lucy Gray try to find Jessup which Coriolanus didn't like.
"What are you doing? Run." He said softly.
The scene became more and more gruesome making Emme look away at times as well as some other students. Some even getting sick from the scene. Before the buzzer buzzes signaling that the most gruesome part/first part has come to a conclusion which made students cheered. It made Emme sick to her stomach that people actually enjoyed this. How can you stand to watch kids killing kids? Even after everything.. as time carried Lucy Gray had found Jessup and they escaped into one of the tunnels and Reaper and Dill hid away in another spot in the arena.
"Hy and Sol from the other side, pincering in on Lucy Gray." Lucky announced as it showed them closing in on them.
"Come on." Lucy Gray said trying to pull Jessup with her.
"Here comes the Pack, surprising Hy and Sol." Lucky said as Corals pack started to close in on Lucy Gray and Reaper as the killed off Hy and Sol. Emme got lost in her thoughts but caught the end of Corals conversation.
"I knew we should have recruited that Reaper kid." Emme paled and thanked the gods that Reaper did not join them.
"Do you think they're done?" Someone asked softly.
"Looks like it." Lucky said Turing to the camera.
"To the children watching, that was violent, horrific, and disgusting. Ms. Phipps, please, if you're going to vomit, do it off camera. Thirteen tributes remain. Reaper still looming large on top of the charts while Coral and her Pack try to make a play. Six tributes gone in minutes. If they keep it up at this pace, we're gonna be outta here in no time." Lucky informed before moving on to the weather.
Emme looked at district 7 girl lamina go up to Marcus. Just hearing the pleads from his mouth as he sobbed made Emme want to hurl and leave. Her heart broke hearing him plead for her to end it and so she did. She looked away when Lamina ended Marcus's misery. The day became night as the games slowed and students went home all except her and Coriolanus. Coriolanus had to make sure he would win and Emme wanted to keep an eye on Dill.
"Aren't you going to leave?" Coriolanus asked looking over at Emme.
"Funny I was going to ask you the same thing.." She said stifling a yawn. "Not that I really need too."
Coriolanus looked at her before shrugging. They both eventually fell asleep from exhaustion in their chairs.
