The DWTS rehearsal studio pulsed with bass, the opening notes of Worlds Collide filling the wide mirrored room. Diana wiped her palms on her leggings and joined Daniella, Ezra, Brandon, and Britt in the center. The pros had been bouncing choreography ideas off each other all morning, and the creative electricity between them had only grown sharper with each beat of the mashup.
The music started strong and theatrical, the kind of number that demanded intensity right from the first note. Dani clapped her hands together, counting out loud as Brandon marked through a potential set of steps.
"Okay, so we need impact right here," Daniella said, clapping on the downbeat. "Big, dramatic, but not stiff."
Ezra tried an exaggerated lunge with an arm sweep, his face serious until Brandon snorted.
"Bro, you look like you're swatting flies," Brandon teased.
Britt burst into laughter, and even Diana had to press her lips together to hide a smile. Ezra bowed, unbothered.
"Fine, I'll save it for the end," he said with a flourish.
Diana stepped forward, replaying the rhythm in her head. Worlds Collide wasn't just a song—it was the opener, the tone-setter for everything the number would give the audience that night. It needed to feel massive, unifying, explosive.
They ran through ideas, Brandon squaring off against Ezra, Britt and Dani behind them, Diana cutting through the middle. For a moment, it clicked—the musicality, the staging, the sense of two different worlds about to crash together.
When the song transitioned into Good To Be Bad, the mood shifted. Shoulders dropped into swagger, steps sharper, more defiant.
Diana's mind buzzed, filing away possibilities. "The cast probably has some fun choreography from their tour we can throw in, too," she offered.
"That's smart," Britt agreed. "We can get a base idea down and then collaborate with them once they're here."
"Exactly," Dani agreed, already strategizing. "This should feel like a mashup of styles, and since they're singing too, we want them to be comfortable with the choreography."
By the time the track hit The Place to Be, Brandon was jokingly throwing in cartwheels, Ezra was mock-moonwalking, and Dani threatened to throw her water bottle at both of them. The room felt alive, buzzing, ready.
They laughed, spinning ideas until the music swelled back into the final chorus of Worlds Collide. Diana clapped her hands together, breathless even though they'd barely been marking steps. "This is gonna be so fun."
Just as Britt opened her mouth to add something, the sound of the studio door creaking open cut through the music.
All five pros turned at once.
A group spilled into the studio, filling the doorway with chatter and the squeak of sneakers. Malachi Barton stepped in first, his grin wide and familiar, but Diana's gaze instantly shifted past him. Freya, Joshua, MK, Dara, Kylie, and Malia followed in a loose cluster, their energy bright and curious. And behind them came a handful of dancers Diana recognized from tour videos—Sage, Mari, Liv, Isaac, and CJ.
For a moment, the room paused.
Then Dani broke the silence with a smile. "Well, look at that. Our guests of honor."
Brandon smirked. "Finally. Thought you guys were ghosting us."
Malachi spread his arms. "What can I say? Had to make an entrance."
The groups drifted toward the center of the floor like magnets. Diana felt her heart lift at the sight of so many new faces colliding with the familiarity of her fellow pros. Two different worlds literally colliding.
Malachi's eyes found Diana first. With exaggerated seriousness, he extended his hand like they'd never met before. "Hi, I'm Malachi Barton. Nice to meet you."
Diana giggled as she slid her hand into his, just as serious. "Oh wow. The Malachi Barton? Disneys newest heartthrob. Such an honor."
He smirked, then broke character to pull her into a hug. The kind of hug that already felt like second nature.
When they pulled apart, Freya leaned in, her smile sly. "Hi, i'm Freya! We've been waiting to meet you. Malachi talks about you all the time."
Diana blinked, caught off guard. Malachi laughed awkwardly, scratching the back of his neck.
"I hope it's all good things," Diana said lightly.
"Oh, it is," MK said, his eyes flicking toward Malachi with obvious mischief. "Trust me."
Malachi groaned, rolling his eyes. "Ignore him." He gestured toward MK anyway. "This is MK. Don't believe a word he says."
"So you're the famous MK," Diana laughed and shook his hand. "I've heard a lot of stories about you."
MK groaned again, burying his face in his hands. "Why does he always do this?"
The introductions spiraled from there, Diana moving from one new face to another, each bringing their own energy. Joshuas fun personality that had the group laughing. Malia's smile was warm, her voice soft but steady. Kylie had a confidence that filled the space. Dara's excitement that spread to the others.
"I can practically feel the presence of Mickey right now," Ezra joked.
Malachi leaned in to Diana with a teasing grin. "You're basically in the presence of royalty."
"Funny," she shot back, "that's what my best friend said about you."
He laughed, his ears turning faintly pink. A smirk formed as he said, "Oh, so you talk about me to your friends."
Diana rolled her eyes, "Only when you annoy me."
By the time the round of introductions ended, the room buzzed with familiarity instead of formality. Bags were dropped against walls, water bottles lined up, sneakers tied.
Dani raised her voice over the chatter. "Alright, before we dive in, who here are the Descendants people and who are the Zombies people? I need a head count."
That sparked laughter.
"You're showing your age," Brandon teased, elbowing her.
Dani gasped. "Excuse me? You're the one who hadn't even heard of these movies until three days ago."
The room cracked up again.
When it calmed, Kylie raised her hand. "Descendants. That's me, Joshua, Dara, and Malia."
"And Zombies—that's me, Freya, and MK," Malachi added.
"Perfect," Dani said with a nod.
Britt stepped in. "Have you guys already run through the medley together?"
Kylie nodded. "Yeah, we had rehearsals earlier today."
"Awesome," Dani said. "Then let's start at the top of Worlds Collide."
The music blasted again, louder now, and the studio transformed. DWTS pros slotted themselves into lines with the DZ cast, testing spacing, adding flourishes of tour choreography whenever the cast demonstrated. Diana found herself mesmerized by Sage's sharp movements, Mari's energy, Isaac's precision. Every section felt bigger, brighter.
For over an hour, the two groups worked together, the mirror reflecting chaos that somehow grew more cohesive with each pass. Sweat dampened shirts, laughter filled pauses, corrections flew across the room.
When Dani finally called a break, cheers and sighs filled the air. People collapsed on the floor, guzzled water, or stretched lazily against the walls.
Diana sank down against the mirror, her phone warm in her hand. Malachi plopped beside her seconds later, his grin bright even through his exhaustion.
"Not bad for a first day," he said.
"Not bad at all," she agreed, wiping her brow.
"You guys make it look easy."
Diana laughed, shaking her head. "We fake it well."
Freya wandered over, dropping onto the floor with a groan. "So is this what it's like every week?"
"Pretty much," Diana said, smiling. "Though usually it's just the opening and our own partner dances. Not... all this."
Freya exhaled dramatically. "You guys are insane."
Ezra, across the room, chose that moment to attempt one of the new tricks which quickly went wrong, and had Ezra nearly toppling into Brandon. The two burst into laughter, and when Dani scolded them half-heartedly, it only made everyone laugh harder.
The break ended quicker than anyone wanted. Dani clapped her hands loudly, reclaiming the room.
"Alright, let's dive into the Descendants section," she said. "Freya, Malachi, MK—you're off for this part. Go over what we've already done. I need the Descendants crew, Brandon, Liv, Isaac, and CJ, on your feet."
The three Zombies cast members dropping against the mirrored wall, thankful for the longer break. Diana, Britt, and Ezra joined them since they wouldn't be dancing this section either.
Brandon and Dani took the lead, corralling Kylie, Joshua, Dara, Malia, Liv, Isaac, and CJ into lines. The Good to Be Bad beat kicked in, filling the studio with attitude and edge.
From her spot on the sidelines, Diana crossed her arms and studied the energy on the floor. The Descendants kids carried a swagger that was infectious, their movements bold and precise in a way that screamed stage experience. Even the DWTS pros seemed to be feeding off their vibe, Brandon throwing in cheeky head tilts, Dani adding sharp snaps that made the choreography pop.
Ezra, sprawled on the floor nearby, chose that exact moment to pull out his phone and start beatboxing along to the track, completely off rhythm. Diana snorted, clapping a hand over her mouth as Dani shot him a glare mid-choreo.
"Ezra, you're done for," Britt said, though she was laughing too.
As the rehearsal went on, Diana found herself sitting next to Malachi again, the two of them quietly talking while watching the Descendants section come together. It felt easy—like they'd fallen into their own little bubble amid the chaos.
Eventually, they ran it from the top. Taking note of things that worked and things that didn't. After a few more runs Dani finally called it for the day. The cast looked equal parts exhilarated and drained. Water bottles cracked open, sneakers squeaked against the floor as everyone collapsed into messy little clusters.
Malachi slid down to sit beside Diana again, their shoulders brushing.
"Not bad, huh?" he said, nodding toward the sweaty chaos.
"Not bad," she agreed. "You all brought so much energy. It's going to look incredible once it's cleaned up."
Their eyes met for a beat too long before MK's voice cut through. "Lunch?" he asked, already slinging a bag over his shoulder.
Malachi perked up. "Yeah, let's grab food. Diana, you coming?"
She smiled but shook her head regretfully. "I wish. I've got rehearsal with Grayson now."
"Oh, right," Malachi said, his smile falling just slightly. "Next time then."
MK perked up. "What are you guys doing for Disney Night?"
Diana's eyes lit up. "We're doing a jive to Get'cha Head in the Game."
Dara's eyes lit up. "That's perfect! EJs making a comeback—oh, fans are going to eat that up."
Diana laughed. "That's the hope. I'm thinking of incorporating basketballs, too, just to make it even more High School Musical."
"Yes!" Kylie said. "That'll be so cute. And what are you wearing?"
"Well, Grayson's definitely going to be in a Wildcats basketball uniform with Caswell on the back," Diana explained, "and I'll probably be in a cheer uniform. It just makes sense."
Kylie clapped her hands together. "You guys are going to look so good."
Dara leaned in, smirking. "I might have to come watch rehearsal sometime. You know, show some support for my fellow Wildcat."
The rest of the cast murmured their agreement, all teasing but genuinely intrigued.
Diana smiled, touched. "Once we've got the routine down, I'll let you guys sneak a peek. Deal?"
They chorused their agreement before gathering their things. One by one, they called their goodbyes, the air buzzing with new connections already cementing into friendships.
Malachi hugged her tightly, murmuring, "Good luck with rehearsal."
"Thanks," she said softly. "I'll see you tomorrow."
When the room finally cleared, Diana grabbed her water bottle and headed down the hall to another studio. She pushed the door open to find Grayson already there, sweat shining on his forehead as he practiced footwork across the floor.
He looked up immediately, his face brightening. "There you are! Thought you bailed on me."
Diana glanced at her phone and winced. Almost ten minutes late. "Sorry. I had the Worlds Collide rehearsal before this, and I got caught up saying goodbye to Malachi and the rest of the group."
At Malachi's name, something flickered across Grayson's face—an expression too quick for her to catch before it melted into a neutral smile.
Instead, she set her bag down and crossed the floor toward him. "Guess what—I met Dara today. She's so sweet and she really want to see our dance."
Grayson's smile returned, softer this time. "Yeah, Dara's the best. You'll love working with her."
They slipped into their positions, the opening beats of Get'cha Head in the Game bouncing through the speakers.
The next hour blurred into a whirlwind of sharp kicks, energetic hops, and Diana's constant corrections. "Straighter legs. Sharper arms. And don't forget to keep the bounce—it's jive, not jazz."
Grayson groaned but obeyed, his hair damp with sweat, his grin wide despite the exhaustion. "You're relentless."
"You'll thank me later," Diana teased.
Toward the end, they decided to film a TikTok. Diana set her phone on the ledge and cued the music. Grayson spun her out dramatically before pulling her back in, and she leapt into his arms, wrapping her legs around his waist as he spun them both.
When the video ended, Diana's laughter echoed through the studio, light and carefree. Grayson looked down at his phone, his grin steady but his eyes mischievous.
She didn't notice.
For her, the night was just another rehearsal. Another step closer to Disney week. Another memory etched into the whirlwind of dance, and friendship.
