Explanation

( Ava's pov)

Steve returns after a minute "what happened?" I ask "he got away." he answers "we need to get Nick to s hospital. Call agent Hill and let her know." I say. " How do you know Nick and Hill?" He asks " look he could die. I'll explain everything when we get him to a hospital now please call agent Hill!" He hesitates trying to process what just happened then calls Hill.

After we reach a shield protected hospital Nick goes into surgery. Hill is with us now and we all enter a room where we can watch Nick's surgery. "So how do you know Fury and Hill?" Steve asks sounding as though he's getting impatient. " I was a shield agent up until five years ago. I quit and fury told me that I would never be able to fully leave, that I would eventually rejoin....... Just never thought it would be like this. I honestly didn't ever expect to become part of shield again." I explain. He just stares at me looking unsure of something. He looks to Hill and she says "she's telling the truth. She hasn't been associated with shield for the past five years.".

Natasha then comes into the room looking worried. "Is he gonna make it?" She asks "I don't know." Steve answers. "Tell me about the shooter." she says. "He's fast, strong.... had. Metal arm." He answers. Metal arm? Don't tell me it's that bastard people call the winter soldier. Hill answers the remainder of her questions as The machines start to flat line and the surgeons try to revive Nick.

Natasha keeps whispering to herself "don't do this to me Nick.". When all attempts to save him don't work I leave the room covering my mouth in attempt to muffle the sound of my crying.

I basically grew up in shield, Nick was a father figure for not only me but for my sister as well.

(Steve's pov)

Once the declare Nick dead Ava walks out of the room covering he mouth as I hear her faintly cry as if she's trying to hold it back. After a second I leave the room as well only to find Ava kneeling on the floor with her head in her knees.

"You ok?" I ask, I hear her take a breath before lifting her head. I see tears streaming down her face "I'm fine." she says as her voice cracks. I kneel down next to her "No your not. what was your relationship with Nick?" I ask knowing that no one would cry this much if they didn't have some sort of relationship with a person.

"Well....." she wipes her face and sniffles before continuing " I grew up in shield as did my sister. I never knew my parents. So Nick became a father figure to my sister and I...... What am I going to tell her?" "Your sister is still part of shield she should get the news soon." agent Hill says as she walks out of the room. The both of us stand up and Natasha walks out of the room as well.

( Ava's pov)

Steve and I both stand up and I nod in response to Hill's words. The four of us all then get to view the body. Natasha and I just stare at Nick's lifeless body that lays on the table in the middle of the room. I don't stay long, not wanting to accept that he's really gone. When I leave the room I lean against the wall next to the door and wait for everyone else.

Not long after I leave the door opens and Natasha comes out with Steve following her "Natasha!" He says getting her to stop and turn around. I walk over to them to see what's going on. "Why was Fury at your apartment?" She asks him "I don't know." he answers.
