Chapter 1

06:46, 5 December 2014

“Why are there so many stairs?” I half yell, half laugh to myself on the landing of the staircase. There are only seven steps until the next floor and it seems like its miles away.

The only thing I hate about living in the dorms is walking up the stairs. I only live five flights up but being drunk and in heels make this so much more difficult.

Deciding it’s impossible for me to walk up, I start climbing the staircase on my hands and knees, not caring that I’m in a short dress. No one is even around.

By the fourth flight, I need a break. I pull off my heels and walk barefoot the rest of the way. I could care less. I’m still too drunk to even be concerned that I look trashy.

Ah, finally.

I make it to my floor and head towards my room. Or to what I think is my room. I open the door and there are three boys sitting in the common area. My eyes scan back and forth between them, ignoring the confused looks they are giving me.

I shrug, falling on the couch between two of them. My roommates finally brought some cute boys back to our room. But then I wonder why are they here when my roommates aren’t.

“Hello?” the boy with the dark hair directs his attention to me. It was of a question than a friendly greeting. “Can we help you?”

“Yes” I wave my index finger in the air. “Why are you in my room?”

“Um…” he looks to the other boys for an answer.

I stand up, tripping over my own two feet before catching my balance. There was never a table there. “Why is everything different?” I ask. The couch is moved from one side of the room to the other. The TV is much larger and surrounded by video games. I look at the wall, my eyes growing wide. “Why are there naked girls all over the walls?”

The boy with blue hair chuckles loudly. “This isn’t your room sweetheart.”

“Yes it is” I say confidently, placing my hands on my hips.

The blond one on the couch shrugs his shoulders and carries on playing his x-box game.

“Well I’m going to sleep” I yawn, stretching out arms, heading to ‘my room’.

The three boys just laugh, shaking their heads. “What?” I giggle along with them.

“I wouldn’t go in there if I were you” the dark-haired one warns.

I should have asked their names. I mean, they are in my room after all.

“Oh my god” I whisper, my mouth falling open as I come to a realization. I clasp my hand over my mouth to stop myself from laughing. “Is Amy having sex?” I ask, not able to contain my laughter anymore.

Amy is my direct roommate. She is more of a snooze than a party. She would never bring a guy home. She’s way to into her studies than going out and meeting new people.

“It’s not Amy but there is definitely something going down in there” the boy with blue hair says.

“Ew! Is someone having sex in my bed?” I fling open the door. The room is dark but I manage to make it to my bed without falling over anything. I crawl in, realizing there are two other people lying on ‘my bed’.

I slide off, slamming my head on the dresser. “Fuck!” I cry out, rubbing away the pain.

The light switches on and I’m met with an angry set of eyes. “What the fuck?” the boy on the bed sits up, glaring at me.

The look in his eyes scares me. There’s so much rage behind them. I’m sure if I were a guy he would have knocked me out by now.

I won’t back down. He’s the one invading my space. “Why are you in my bed?” I snap at him, trying to mimic the same scowl on his face.

“What the hell are you doing in my room?” he shouts, vibrating with anger. “Get the fuck out!”

I start sobering up just a little, taking a good look around, realizing this might in fact not be my bedroom.

I grab a hold of the dresser and the post of the bed, hoisting myself up from the ground. Let me tell you this is one of the hardest thing I had to do in all my life. Or that’s how it seems at the moment. I can’t drink this much ever again.

Damn you Adrienne.

When I finally rise to my feet I giggle at myself, feeling proud. Mission accomplished. I am standing.

This guy is not having it. If looks could kill I would be six feet under right now. He doesn’t have to be rude.

Granted, I did just walk in on y him having sex. Wait, was he having sex?

Well, if he was I’m sure it wasn’t any good because she’s pretty quiet over there. I know I shouldn’t open my mouth to comment but I do.

“The sex that bad? She fell asleep on you.”

He jumps off the bed, coming face to face with me. Well, face to chest. He’s huge. And shirtless. And really hot just standing there all angry and only a pair of boxers. I’d be really into him right now if he didn’t want to kill me.

I can feel his heavy breathing. His fists are clenched on his side. “What did you say?” he growls at me, snapping me out of the fantasies that started to play in my head.

My eyes flicker up to meet his. “I was just saying, you put her to sleep.”

He inhales sharply. “What are you still doing in here?” he screams. Why does he have to shout so much? I’m not deaf.

I shrug my shoulders. I linger around, taking in his room. It’s not too bad. Some more posters of naked women on his walls, its fairly clean otherwise.

He huffs loudly and I decide that its probably time I get out of his room and find my own. As I walk towards the common area, I trip, almost falling face forward to the floor.

He grabs me before I hit the ground. “Well that would have hurt” I giggle.

“Will someone please get this drunk girl out of my fucking room?” he shouts out to his roommates.

I stabilize myself, ripping my arm from his grip with no luck. I didn’t notice he was still holding me. “I am not drunk” I defend myself. “And get your hands off me” I pull away with more force this time, only cause me to nearly fall again.

This time his arms wrap around my waist, pulling me back against his chest.

For a second I will admit that it feels pretty good being in his arms. I can’t explain it. It’s like we just fit together.

Get it together Shane. He’s a stranger, an angry stranger. It might be the alcohol affecting me but it feels really good having his hands on my body.

“Before she pukes on all my shit” he adds, his hands still holding me up.

Aaaaaaand that intimate moment is ruined.

“I’m going. I’m going.” He lets go of my waist but I can barely walk. Taking two steps across his room and I’m tripping over my own two feet. Thank god I took my heels off before other wise this would have been much worse.

“Luke!” he calls and the blond one stands in the doorway. At least I learned his name. “Please get her the fuck out of here” he passes me off to his roommate.

Why does he have to curse so much?

Luke nods his head, obeying his command. What is he, his servant?

“So you’re Luke” I glance up at him. He’s much taller than the rude one kicking me out. “What’s up with that guy? He’s got a huge stick up his ass.”

Everyone’s eyes grow wide and a laugh escapes my lips. These guys are way too serious, such a buzz kill.

“So Luke” I grin, sliding my hand across his chest. “I’ve got a full bottle of vodka in my room. If you can help me find it, I’ll split it with you.”

“That’s okay” he answers, a smile playing on his lips. “But I will help you find you room. What building do you live in?”

“Hmmm” I stand there for a second, tapping my finger on my lips. I burst into laughter when I can’t even think of where I lived. I should feel more embarrassed than I do right now, being this drunk in front of people I’ve never met. “This one” I answer. “My friend dropped me off here so it has to be this one.”

The rude one groans, clearly annoyed with the fact that I’m still in his room. I turn to him, folding my arms across my chest. “Why don’t you stop your pissing and moaning and help me find my room?”

“Because I don’t fucking want to” he scoffs, his eyes burning through me.

I take a step towards him. “You would probably leave a lost puppy out in the freezing snow to die too, wouldn’t you?”

The dark haired boy tries to hide his laugh but can’t, he’s on the couch rolling around. The angry one slaps at his leg and he immediately shuts his mouth.

What kind of power does he have over them?

His attention is back on me. “Good thing you aren’t dying” he rolls his eyes.

I squint mine, curling my finger, motioning him to come to me. I give him the best puppy dog eyes I can muster in my drunken state and pout.

“Please help me get back to my room?” I look up at him, the palm of my hands resting lightly on his chest. I can feel his heartbeat beneath my hand, its quick and pounding.

“Fine” he huffs, pulling me out of the room, his fingers digging into my wrist.

“Where are we going?” I ask him once we’re in the hallway. His grip tightens as he stomps his feet down the quiet hall, me stumbling behind him.

“Just follow me” he growls.

“Wait!” I scream when we pass the stairwell.

“What?” he asks in an irritated tone.

I run away from him, picking up my heels and struggling to put them on but it’s a success in the end.

“Look” I smile. “I’m taller now” I say like it’s the greatest thing that ever happened.

He almost cracks a smile but it’s quickly replaced by anger as he reaches for me again, this time taking my hand in his.

I collide into his back when he suddenly stops. His hands grip the front of my thighs so I don’t fall over.

“This your room?” I examine the door and the nametags taped to it.

“Shane! That’s me” I exclaim.

“Thank god” he mumbles, ripping my wristlet from my hands to dig for my keys.

“Hey!” I snatch it back from him. “It’s not very gentleman like for you to go through a lady’s purse.”

“Good thing I am not a gentleman then” he smirks, pulling my keys out, unlocking my room and pushing me inside. “Good night” he says, slamming the door as he leaves.

“Asshole!” I yell, throwing my wristlet at the door. I only make it to the couch before passing out.

My couch.

I wake up with a stiff neck, confused as to where I am. “I’m never drinking again” I tell myself out loud but I say that almost every weekend.

I’m in college and I want to have as much as fun as I can before I have to enter the real world. So what if I black out a few times at least I made it home.

“What the fuck happened last night?” I groan as I stand up from the couch. My head is pounding and my roommate, Amy, is glaring at me. “What?” I snap at her.

“You woke me up last night. You need to stop bringing guys back and slamming the door at 3 am.”

“I did not bring a guy back last night” I assure her.

“I heard both your voices Shane.”

I roll my eyes, pushing past her into my room. I really need to switch. She is annoying me. And what guy is she even talking about? Must have been the people across the hall. Or maybe she was dreaming.

I change out of my clothes from last night, putting on a fresh pair of jeans and a sweater. I pull on my Uggs and make my way to the cafeteria for some breakfast.

As I’m walking through, looking at the different foods of the day, I bump into someone. “Sorry” I mumble.

“You should be” the person snaps at me.

“Excuse me? I said I was sorry.”

“Yeah. I heard you.”

Before I get a chance to respond, he angrily walks away from me. What the hell is everyone’s problem today? Everyone is on their periods. I brush it off but I couldn’t get his face out of my mind.

He’s beautiful to say the least. His brown curly hair covers some of his forehead. His eyes are hazel with a hint of green. Even though he stared at me furiously, his eyes were breathtaking. I just don’t understand why everyone is giving me such an attitude.
