Chapter 5: The Cheshire Ghost☠️👻

04:08, 6 October 2024

F went deep into the woods after all the shrinking and growing experience. When he was trying to find his way home, he saw a map lying on his feet. He picked it up and said:

"Never seen this map before, I just wanted to find my way home, I wonder if this will help me".

The map didn't seem to point the direction to his home, but it didn't matter that it would teach him how to get back. At that moment, he was a little startled by seeing H, the cheshire ghost, sitting on a bough of a tree a few yards off.

H only appeared when she saw F. She looked good-natured, he thought: still she is alive but dead, so he felt that she ought to be treated with respect.

"Cheshire Ghost...?" he began, rather timidly, as he did not at all know whether she would like the name: however, she only appeared one at a time. “Come, it’s pleased so far,” thought F, and he went on. “Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?”

"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said H.

“I don’t much care where—” said F.

“Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,” said H.

“—so long as I get somewhere,” F added as an explanation.

“Oh, you’re sure to do that,” said H, “if you only walk long enough.”

F felt that this could not be denied, so he tried another question. “What sort of people live about here?”

"In that direction,” H said, waving her right hand round, “lives the Hatter, L: and in that direction,” waving the other hand, “lives O, the March letter. Visit either you like: they’re both mad.”

“But I don’t want to go among mad people,” F remarked.

“Oh, you can’t help that,” said H: “we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad.”

“How do you know I’m mad?” said F.

“You must be,” said H, “or you wouldn’t have come here.”

F didn’t think that proved it at all; however, he went on “And how do you know that you’re mad?”

“To begin with,” said H, “a dog’s not mad. You grant that?”

“I suppose so,” said F.

"Well, then,” H went on, “you see, a dog growls when it’s angry, and wags its tail when it’s pleased. Now I growl when I’m pleased, and wag my tail when I’m angry. Therefore I’m mad.”

“I call it purring, not growling,” said F.

“Call it what you like,” said H. “Do you play croquet with the Queen to-day?”

I should like it very much,” said F, “but I haven’t been invited yet.”

“You’ll see me there,” said H and vanished.

F was not much surprised at this, he was getting so used to queer things happening. While he was looking at the place where she had been, she suddenly appeared again.

“By-the-bye, what are you doing while traveling in the woods while I was gone?” said H. “I’d nearly forgotten to ask.”

“I was trying to find my way back home”, F quietly said, just as if it had come back in a natural way.

“I thought it would,” said H, and vanished again.

F waited a little, half expecting to see her again, but she did not appear, and after a minute or two, he walked on in the direction in which L and O was said to live. “I’ve seen hatters before,” he said to himself; “O will be much the most interesting, and perhaps as this is may he won’t be raving mad—at least not so mad as he was in March.” As he said this, he looked up, and there was H again, sitting on a branch of a tree.

"Trying to find your way home?" said H.

"Yeah, but I couldn't find it when I was looking at the map earlier", said F.

"All right", said H, "You can find your way home as you follow into your path, people can also find their way home using their cars, or a jeep, a bus when it's a school day, and other vehicles".

"But we don't have any kinds of vehicles here", said F, but H vanished once again.

“Well! I’ve often seen a ghost without being alive,” thought F; “but being alive while dead is kinda weird! It’s the most curious thing I ever saw in my life!”

He had not gone much farther before he came in sight of the house of O: he thought it must be the right house, because the chimneys were shaped like ears and the roof was thatched with fur. It was so large a house, that he did not like to go nearer till he had nibbled some more of the lefthand bit of mushroom, and raised himself to about two feet high: even then he walked up towards it rather timidly, saying to himself: “Suppose it should be raving mad after all! I almost wish I’d gone to see L instead!”

H is female in my version, please respect my opinion with it if she is a boy in your version~

And also, I've never updated this book since 1 month ;-;

Stay tuned for Chapter 6.........
