We'll fix this

11:53, 10 April 2021

*one month later*

Everything was back to normal, jays ptsd had subsided for now and the team were back to working regular cases instead of piles of paperwork all the time.  Jay and Taylor were stronger then ever, as partners of course, but nothing ever runs smoothly at district 21...

"Stand by!" Hank ordered to his detectives as they all stood outside of a stash house waiting to move in, guns raised and vests on. There was a moments silence of nothingness until jay spotted movement in the top bedroom window, he kicked down the door as the unit realised what he saw and followed suit, "cover me" jay spoke bluntly. Taylor covered him as the pair moved upstairs, "Chicago PD get your hands in the air!" Jay shouted at the offender as he tried to run. The man huffed but fell to his knees and surrendered so Taylor could arrest him.

"Son of a b*tch confessed" hank scoffed and walked into his office. Case closed, or so they thought. They all smiled but they were interrupted by the superintendent who walked into their bullpen sternly, "detective Halstead, voights office now" she spoke angrily and wandered into Hanks office unannounced. Jay looked at Taylor in confusion as she shrugged her shoulders, he got up in a huff and followed suit.

"What's this about?" Hank huffed and stood up. Deputy Miller sighed, "Halstead, care to explain why you didn't announce your office?" She looked at jay. Jay furrowed his brows, "I saw movement, if I announced then he would've made us" he shrugged. Hank put his arms out, "I don't see the problem" he huffed. Deputy Miller nodded, "well I do, all of the evidence you've built up is no longer sustainable. We're back to square one, so Halstead I'm gonna need your badge. You're stripped until this is solved" she held out her hand. Hank raised his eyebrows, "is this really necessary?" He scoffed. Jay shook his head but slowly gave deputy Miller his badge and gun. "Yes it is, now I don't wanna see you back here until I say so" she warned jay then left with his badge and gun.

The unit all stood up as she left but they all noticed that she was holding jays badge and gun, hank and jay left his office in a mood, "we'll fix this, now go home until I say you can come back" hank sighed. Jay huffed but angrily grabbed his jacket and ignored everyone as he left, even Taylor.

Taylor shook her head, "Sarge what's going on?" She sighed. Hank folded his arms, "we're back to square one, jays stripped until we can prove that he saw movement. The evidence is sustainable, Miller said he should've announced his office" he shrugged his shoulders in a mood. The team all scoffed in anger, jay wouldn't make something up. "We can only hold Dante for 24 hours, so we start from scratch. Look through every ounce of footage we have and pick it to pieces" hank ordered then wandered downstairs to go make phone calls.

The team had spent 4 hours looking through footage and files looking for any grace of fresh evidence they missed before but nothing was coming up and they were running out of footage. Taylor had left jay multiple texts to make sure he was okay but he hasn't replied to any of them, he was taking this hard on himself. "Hey hold on, I've got something" Kim perked up. Hank walked out of his office immediately, "we didn't get anything from this cam, is there any reason or..." she pointed to a house cam on the side of the wall. Hank scoffed, "the owners wouldn't give up the footage, we don't have a warrant" he shrugged. Taylor huffed, "we don't need a warrant, we go over ourselves and make them hand it over" she shook her head.

They all looked weary of that idea, "c'mon guys, it's jays job we're talking about here. I don't really think it's up for debate" she sighed. Hank thought about it for a second, "alright fine, Watson and Atwater you two go pay them another visit. No police brutality you hear me?" He warned them. The pair nodded and grabbed their jackets, by now it was around 8pm and they were all still working since jay was more important then sleep right now.

Kevin and Taylor arrived at the house which was opposite the stash house they raised earlier that day, "no police brutality tayls, it's too risky" Kevin reminded her before she knocked on the door. She nodded but huffed, she had to knock a few times before the door finally opened. "I told you I'm not giving it over..." the woman started but Taylor invited herself in, Kevin followed right behind. The woman who was the same age as Kevin round about huffed, "you can't do this..." she snapped. Taylor raised her eyebrows, "is that cannabis I smell?" She sniffed the air. Kevin sniffed the air too, "I believe it is" he nodded. The woman groaned, "I'll call the police" she folded her arms.

Taylor laughed, "well then, you'd be calling us I'm afraid" she shrugged and put her hands in her pockets. Kevin nodded in agreement as the woman rolled her eyes, "why'd you want it so bad anyways? It's just footage" she scoffed. Taylor stepped forward, "it's not just footage and I'm not gonna ask again. So give us the footage before I arrest your ass for possession right here, right now" she growled in the girls face. Kevin didn't even stop her, he knew how much she cared about jay and how bad she wanted his job back.

The woman groaned, "fine! Oh my god..." she shook her head and put her chihuahua down. Taylor smiled at Kevin since this could save jays job. The woman reappeared with a copy of the footage from today a few minutes later and handed it over unwillingly before picking up her dog again. Taylor snatched it from her hand since she wasn't in the mood to play nicey nicey with her, "nice dog" she scoffed as Kevin and herself left the path. Javelin laughed as the pair got back into his car.

"Sarge we've got it, we've got the evidence..." Taylor sighed in relief as she threw her head back in the chair, she'd spent 2 hours analysing the footage. They all laughed in relief a little, "good, this is it. It's over" hank nodded then watched the footage which shows the movement from the window which proves jay was rightful in his actions. Once everyone had saw the footage hank left to go call deputy Miller, the only main problem was, they were all exhausted. After spending all day looking over footage and restarting the case about 10 times they had finally cracked it all, but it was 2am in the morning...

Hank was taking his time downstairs and the girls couldn't keep their eyes open any longer but they couldn't leave yet so Taylor was the first one to sit on the couch in the break room, then Vanessa, then Kim. It only took them a few minutes to fall asleep in each other's embrace, Taylor was on the bottom with one arm over Vanessa and her hand on Kim's shoulder and her other hand propping her head up. Vanessa was sleeping on Taylor's shoulder with Kim leant against her chest. Cosy...

Jay wasn't even asleep since he was too worried about losing his job, he hadn't been on his phone all day either. He was snapped out of his thoughts when his phone ran, he looked down at the screen and saw his boss's name flash up.Jay: "Sarge?"Hank: "I need you to come to the station"Jay: "is everything okay?"Hank: "I'll explain when you get here"Jay: "yeah okay, I'm on my way"

Jay pulled up at the district and hopped out straight away, he was a little tired but it was nothing compared to the units level of tired. He wandered into the bullpen to see Adam and Kevin half asleep at their desks, he couldn't see the girls anywhere though. His eyes darted to Hanks office where he could see deputy Miller stood talking to him, "Halstead, come here" hank waved him into his office. Without hesitation he done as he was told and entered without closing the door, "you'll be glad to know the case had been made and you're no longer stripped" deputy Miller handed him his badge and gun back.

Jays eyes widened in shock, already? "W-how?" He shook his head. Deputy Miller smiled, "you've got a dedicated team by your side, I'll leave the honour of explaining to them" she smiled then left. Hank looked at jay, "close the door" he signalled. Jay obeyed and closed the door, "you done nothing wrong, we found the footage we needed from the mirroring neighbours. I'm sure Kevin'll explain what really happened" he laughed. Jay tilted his head, "thanks Sarge" he nodded thankfully then stood up to go find a rather sleepy Kevin.

"Glad to have you back bro..." Kevin mumbled out groggily. Jay smiled, "good to be back, how did youse do it?" He leant on Kevin's desk as Adam leaned over to listen in. Adam nodded, "well we were just about to give up and find another way to do it, no offence man but the odds were stacked up pretty high, but Kim found a new access point" he started and let Kevin finish as jay smiled at his humour. Kevin took a deep breath, "we went to the neighbour who wouldn't give up the footage before, eventually me and Taylor got it and we all fixed this mess" he yawned.

Jay smiled thankfully, "I don't know how to thank you all but my first guess would be a round on me at mollys sometime" he laughed. Kevin smiled, "I think a nights rest could work too but we're not the ones you should be thanking" he yawned again. Jay laughed but tilted his head in confusion, Adam shook his head, "Taylor is" he yawned too. Jay sat up at little at the sound of her name, "what did she do?" He spoke worriedly. Kevin smiled, "well she wasn't taking no for an answer until we paid the neighbour a visit, then she started threatening the woman with arrest until she handed over the footage. You wouldn't be stood here having this conversation with us if it wasn't for Taylor" he yawned and shrugged.

Jays eyes widened, she really went to that length just for him? He smiled at the thought of it, "speaking of Taylor, where are the girls?" He looked around. Adam yawned, "they're sleeping on the couch" he nodded to the break room. Jay smiled and stood up, he nodded then left to go check on them. He walked into the break room and stood against the sink counter watching them sleep, especially Taylor, she deserves the world. He smiled again but little did he know that he'd been stood there for about 5 minutes until hank walked in, "I say we just leave them here, they'll wake up in the morning" he smiled at his detectives who were all huddled together and resting up. Jay smiled, "yeah..." he nodded and stared at his partner one last time before the boys left and let the girls sleep in the district over night, it wasn't like they were fully alone since there were cops who were still on night shift.
