Worldbuilding 

Refers to the original fictional universe an author creates for their stories. Most fanfictions do not require worldbuilding as the canon itself provides that starting off point, but many AUs do indeed richly develop entirely unique universes with their own rules and backgrounds from which to frame their new stories.
