Chapter 11

19:49, 18 June 2024

The tournament was five days away. During those five days, Terry and Johny trained Mike as fast and hard as they could. Sometimes they would go to the dojo in the early morning and come back late at night.

I was watching a movie by myself in the living room when Terry and Johny walked in together. They took a seat on each side of the couch, me being in the middle, "Ugh, go take a shower, you two. You both stink of sweat!" Terry and Johny exchanged a look before they both hugged me from both sides. I screeched, leaping off the couch as they laughed to themselves. I eventually gave in and laughed along with them.

As I settled back onto the couch, the room grew quiet for a moment. Terry, ever the strategist, broke the silence, "We've been pushing Mike hard, but he's improving every day. The tournament's going to be a challenge, though."

Johny nodded, a rare look of seriousness on his face. "We need to make sure he's mentally prepared as well. Winning isn't just about the physical training."

Terry leaned back, looking at the ceiling as if lost in thought. "It's the mind game that will be crucial. We have to make him believe he can win, no matter what."

I looked at both of them, realizing just how much was riding on this tournament for them. "What if Mike isn't ready?" I asked hesitantly.

Johny's gaze met mine, his eyes steely. "He will be. We've come too far to turn back now. We've instilled the right mindset in him, and we've got to keep reinforcing it."

Terry nodded in agreement. "And we won't let him falter. Not when it counts the most."

There was a brief silence before Terry's face softened into a mischievous grin. "But right now, we need to focus on the next important task."

I raised an eyebrow. "And what task is that?"

He stood up and motioned toward the hallway. "That shower you mentioned. Let's go, Johny."

Johny chuckled, rising from the couch as well. "Yeah, yeah. We're going."

As they headed down the hallway, I couldn't help but smile. Despite their intensity and sometimes overbearing nature, they had a camaraderie that was hard to ignore. Besides all the training and strategizing, there was genuine care for Mike and his success.

Just as I was about to turn my attention back to the movie, I heard Terry call out, "Hey, don't start the movie without us! We'll be quick."

"Sure, sure," I replied, shaking my head with a grin.

As I waited for them to return, I couldn't help but feel a mixture of excitement and nervousness for the upcoming tournament. It was more than just a competition; it was a test of all their efforts and dedication. At that moment, I realized that we were all in this together, supporting each other through the highs and lows.

When Terry and Johny finally returned, freshly showered and in good spirits, we settled back onto the couch. The movie played on, but our thoughts were clearly on the days ahead. Together, we were ready to face whatever challenges the tournament would bring.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Finally, the day of the tournament came. We all donned the appropriate attire before heading out to the event. The excitement was palpable as we arrived at the arena, registered at the front, and then proceeded to follow Mike as he fought his way through the competition, match after match, until he reached the final round.
As we moved through the crowd, cheering Mike on, my eyes caught sight of Miyagi and Danny Boy. When Danny Boy noticed me, we locked eyes for a moment. I broke the stare with a wave and a smile, but he just scoffed and looked away.
I smirked to myself, feeling a surge of confidence. The animosity between our group and Danny Boy had been building for months, ever since Silver started plotting against them. They believed in Mike and trained him to be the best, and today was the day to prove it.
Mike was relentless in his matches, his aggressive style and powerful attacks overwhelming his opponents. The energy in the crowd was electric, buzzing with excitement and anticipation. Miyagi, ever the calm presence, watched from the sidelines, his eyes sharp and focused, always ready to guide Danny Boy with his wisdom and experience.
"Keep your focus, Lana," Silver's voice cut through my thoughts, his hand gripping my shoulder. "We need to stay sharp for the finals."
I nodded, snapping back to the present. "Yeah, I'm good. Just keeping an eye on the competition."
Silver's grin was almost predatory. "Good. That's what I like to hear. Danny and Miyagi are the only real threats here. We take them out, and this tournament is ours."
As the final rounds approached, the tension in the arena intensified. Mike's last opponent before facing Danny was tough, but Mike was tougher. He dispatched him with a brutal efficiency that had the crowd roaring. It was finally time for the match everyone had been waiting for.
Mike versus Danny Boy. But just before they could start fighting, the sports commentator got everyone's attention for an announcement. "While we're waiting for the challenger to catch his breath, I'd like to thank a new patron of ours for purchasing and donating the permanent home of all the All Valley Championships. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the president of Dyna-Tox Industries, Mr. Terry Silver." Terry grabbed my hand, gave it a quick kiss, and patted it before walking to the middle of the stage where the sports commentator was making the announcement.
The sports commenter handed Terry the microphone. "Thank you very much. I've always lived my life by the rule, 'If you get, you give.' For the last twenty years, I've gotten from karate. I've gotten discipline, health, self-confidence, inner peace. Everything that makes me what I am today. And today, it's time for me to give back." The audience applauded and cheered at his speech as I clapped along with them. "It's my pleasure to announce my partnership with the greatest karate man I have ever known, Sensei John Kreese," he said appointing Johny in the audience as Johny raised his hand in the air to make his presence known in the crowd. "Together, we are about to open a chain of Cobra Kai dojos where young people can come and learn the same values I've learned. Honesty, compassion, and fair play. Thank you all for coming. Enjoy the final match," Terry announced ending his speech before handing the microphone back to the sports commenter.
Terry approached us as he put his full attention to Mike, "Remember the game plan. First, you win a point, then you lose a point. Keep the score 0-0. Pulverize him for the full three minutes. Then in sudden death, you get the point, we win. I want him to experience pain. First, he suffers."
"Then he suffers some more," Johny added. Mike nodded understanding the job as he gave them fist bumps.
"Representing the Cobra Kai, the challenger, Mike Barnes!" the sports commenter announced as Mike walked up to the stage.
"And in this corner, someone who needs no introduction, the defending champion from the Miyagi dojo, Daniel LaRusso!" I watched as Danny gave Miyagi a quick pat on his shoulder before joining Mike on the stage.
The referee called both fighters to the center of the mat. The contrast between them was stark. Mike stood fierce and aggressive, while Danny was calm and composed, just like his mentor Miyagi. The referee went over the rules briefly, and then, with a sharp blow of the whistle, the match began.
The initial flurry of attacks and counters set the tone. Mike was relentless, charging at Danny with powerful strikes and kicks, but Danny's defense was impeccable. He moved with fluid grace, dodging and blocking with a precision that spoke volumes of his training under Miyagi. The crowd was on the edge of their seats, cheering and gasping with every exchange.
I watched intently, my eyes flicking between the fighters and the expressions of their mentors. Miyagi remained calm, his gaze steady on Danny, while Kreese and Silver were a mixture of tension and anticipation.
I watched the match intensely not taking my eyes off of them. I watched as Mike brutally assaulted Danny. Mike did exactly what Terry told him to do. He gained a point and then lost a point. As the match went on, Mike punched Danny Boy in the chest making him collapse on the ground holding onto his chest as he was taking deep breaths.
Suddenly, it was death over time. A single point will choose the faith of the dojos.
The crowd's excitement was at a fever pitch as the referee signaled for the sudden death round to begin. Both fighters returned to their positions, the tension between them palpable. Mike's face was a mask of determination, while Danny's expression was one of intense focus, his breathing still labored from the punishing blows he had endured.
"Come on, Mike, finish him!" Silver shouted from the sidelines, his voice brimming with eager anticipation. Kreese stood beside him, his eyes glinting with a ruthless hunger for victory.
Miyagi, standing quietly, gave a subtle nod to Danny. It was a small gesture, but it carried a world of meaning. Danny took a deep breath, centering himself, and then the referee's whistle blew.
Mike charged forward, his fists flying with the same relentless aggression that had characterized his earlier matches. Danny sidestepped the first punch, his movements smooth and calculated. He parried the next blow and countered with a swift kick to Mike's midsection, but Mike absorbed the impact and pressed on, his face contorted with a fierce snarl.
The crowd roared as the two fighters exchanged a flurry of blows, each one more intense than the last. Mike's strength and aggression were met with Danny's agility and precision. It was clear that both fighters were giving everything they had, pushing their limits in this final, decisive round.
As the match neared its climax, a sudden shift occurred. Danny, finding a moment of clarity amidst the chaos, saw an opening. With a swift and graceful move, he executed a technique that Miyagi had drilled into him countless times. His fist struck true, landing a perfectly timed blow to Mike's sternum.
Mike staggered back, his eyes wide with shock and pain. The referee blew the whistle, signaling the point that ended the match. The arena erupted in cheers and applause as Danny stood tall, his chest heaving, victorious.
Silver's face twisted in fury, his eyes blazing with anger. Kreese looked equally enraged, his fists clenched at his sides. Across the mat, Miyagi gave Danny a proud nod, a small smile playing at the corners of his lips.
The referee raised Danny's hand in victory, and the crowd's cheers grew even louder. Miyagi stepped forward, joining his student, and placed a hand on Danny's shoulder, his eyes filled with pride.
As the arena buzzed with excitement, Silver and Kreese exchanged a dark look. This wasn't over, not by a long shot. But for now, the day belonged to Danny and Miyagi.
"Enjoy your victory," Silver muttered under his breath, his eyes narrowing as he watched the celebration. "This isn't the end."
