The Key To Feeling A Little Less Broken
02:26, 5 February 2021Karl looked around at the blown up L'manberg, tears streaming down his face, his head with a smashing headache.
He failed, again. He tried to save L'manberg, 52 times to be exact, but there was no way to stop it. If he destroyed the button, Wilbur would have another one. He couldn't talk him out of it because he would question how he even knew that he was going to blow up L'manberg. When Wilbur told no one, Karl had figured out that he shouldn't tell anyone about his ability to time travel. It would just hurt the ones he loved in the end.
He tried everything to stop Wilbur from blowing L'manberg to smithereens but nothing worked time and the world was against him.
Karl fell to his knees looking at L'manberg from a hill overlooking it. Everyone was crying and screaming. He covered his ears, the screams still loud, piercing his ears. He sat there until the yelling subdued and Technoblade's withers were finally killed. As much as he wanted to help he was so terrified, and he felt it mattered he would have to restart again. He waited, sitting criss cross, hands covering his ears, eyes squeezed shut ,hard. He wanted it all to go away he didn't want to fix everything anymore. The pressure was too much and too much on his memory.
He sat there after the fighting seemed to quiet down just watching. Watching as everyone had gathered and talked then started to rebuild. They were all so strong why couldn't they do his job. All of his friends deserved someone better to do this, to have this responsibility.
He was interrupted from his thoughts when he heard someone running and yelled his name.
"Karl!" Quackity yelled, running with his beanie burnt, from the explosion, dirt covered his face and he looked terrified.
Quackity slid next to Karl fastly and reached for Karl's shoulders, and gripped tightly with shaking hands.
"Karl! Are you okay?" Quackity asked, breath heavy from running and eyes filled with worry. Even though the fighting subdued and everyone had started building, Quackity was itching to find Karl after he disappeared from the fight. He wondered if Karl had lost one of his lives. All that worrying finally built up and now he was here.
Karl lifted his head up, Quackity still gripping his shoulders, with bags under Karl's eyes and dry tears on his face, but Quackity let out a sigh seeing he was okay.
Karl's smelled him then backed away, disgusted.
"You smell terrible," He said quietly, with a weak smile.
Quackity threw his head back laughing like a maniac. He didn't actually think it was that funny but he was desperate to feel anything remotely positive after the events that just happened.
Karl looked at him weirdly but seeing Quackity laugh like a maniac slowly made him start to smile then broke out in a laugh. After a few moments their laugh subdued and they just looked at each other, taking in each other and the future of everyone. Karl felt his eyes water, thinking of the future and how he couldn't fix it. He brought his hands to his face, crying into his hands. Finally he let himself slide forward into Quackity's arms, he was so tired. Out of everyone why did they pick him to be able to do this. Why couldn't someone else fix this mess.
Quackity tensed for a moment then took Karl in his arms squeezing him tightly and felt his eyes start to water. Then they both heard a shout that both jolted them from their haze.
"Karl!" Sapnap yelled running towards them.
His bandana was flowing in the wind wildly, and he was covered in ash from the fires and TNT.
Quackity sat up quickly, grabbing his sword from his baldric and drawing it so it was pointed at him. The tip of his sword touched his chest, almost mocking Sapnap
Sapnap fliched, fearfully, back but held his hands up.
"You," Quackity said maliciously and darkly ,"You, were on their side. Had to stay as Dream's little pet."
Sapnaps once concerned face turned to anger. His hands balled into fists and his eyebrows furrowed.
"I'm not his pet and," He flung his arm at Karl,"He was too!" He yelled.
Karl flinched at this, he was now standing, and realized he was on Dreams side. he felt a little disgusted with home self. But, he forgot that he was his memory getting blurrier and blurrier. He stayed quiet though.
"When I was on your side I saw that Karl," He turned his head to look at a scared Karl. Who was hugging his stomach and looking down, ashamed.
"He has a good heart. If he only knew that Schlatt was a terrible person he would have chosen our side, But," He turned back to look at Sapnap,"We both know he looks for the good in people. But you, your Dreams pet you couldn't leave," He stated coldly.
"I just," Sapnap eyes started to water, "I couldn't go against Dream. He's different. We used to be close but now, he seems dead...numb" His eyes traveled to look at the grass at his feet."I couldn't choose to go to your side, you know how Dream is, he's powerful. But, now I know he could turn on me in an instant, without a second thought."
His tears finally fell down his face, remembering their times together. He remembered when they built the community house. How happy Dream used to be, always smiling and joking. Now, he barely said a word to Sapnap before the war.
"Im sorry," Quackity said softly, almost guilty.
Sapnap looked up to see Quackity with sympathetic eyes.
In that moment he understood what Sapnap was going through. Quackity and Shlatt were best friends, Quackity thought Shlatt cared for him, but in the end. He saw Schlatt's true colors and decided to leave, not looking back. It was hard leaving, knowing that he was leaving Karl behind too. They were also great friends and he saw what a pure heart Karl has.
He lowered his sword and did something that even Karl couldn't anticipate. He slowly walked up to Sapnap and hugged him cautiously, still feeling a bit fearful he was hugging someone on the other side.
Sapnap tensed for a few moments then hugged back. They could both tell that, the other was tired and broken. From the people in their life, to the people that weren't in their life. Both broken souls in need of someone who wouldn't leave them.
Quackity let one arm fall and turned towards Karl. Quackity smiled warmly and motioned for Karl to join them. Karl smiled weakly, and walked over to them, joining them.
It felt like Karl finally took in the place around them.
They were on top of a hill overlooking L'manberg but not too far away. Flowers covered the field, and the sun shined brightly. Clouds covered the sky, it was a beautiful day that didn't reflect the destructive day that happened.
They finally all broke away and just looked at each other, taking each other in. They all smelled of ash and dirt. Their clothes were also covered in that, and torn, they definitely would need some new ones.
They were all quiet until a bee was caught by Karl's eye and he pointed to it.
"Awww look a bee," Karl said sweetly.
Quakity let out a high pitched screech and drew his sword out. The bee, startled by the yell, started to fly away.
"You get back here you ugly son of a bitch!" Quackity yelled chasing after it.
"No! Quackity don't hurt it!" Sapnap yelled running after him, with his arms out like he was about to grab him.
Karl giggled to himself watching them run after the bee. And it made him laugh more when he saw Quackity was doing zigzags across the field to chase the bee who was doing the same and it looked hilarious.
Karl realized then that, maybe he didn't have to restart. Maybe this timeline will work, maybe there was no saving L'manberg. Maybe it was best that it was gone.
He looked back at Quackity and Sapnap. Both of them laughing, their happiness. Karl realized that this was the best possible outcome, this was the best timeline. He smiled to himself, not a weak one, not a broken one but a real smile. He was happy, he did it. He found the best outcome, the key was Quackity and Sapnap as long as the three were together. They could be unstoppable.
With that he ran over to them, the sun on his back and the flowers so large they tickled his ankles.
"Quackity don't touch that damn bee!" Karl yelled, and laughed as he chased after the two people that finally made him feel just a little less lost.
