You Absolute Fool

01:23, 26 December 2023

The rest of the journey to the Dark City was relatively peaceful.

On the way to the city, Sunny managed to reach his third shadow core, making him a Demon, and the crew found a large statue of what looked like a king.

The Ascended Shadow didn't grow much bigger after evolving and was thus still small enough to make its way through the labyrinth efficiently. Its newfound strength meant that Sunny didn't have to augment it with his own shadows to deal with the local populace, leaving them free to explore.

Curiously enough, they still made efforts to not run into any Centurions, even if they would now be capable of easily dealing with them.

Right before reaching the walls of the city, Sunny got bit by a little rock-like creature. Even if it didn't hurt him, it still gave him a small warning that he still wasn't as invincible as he thought he was.

When they reached the outer walls of the Dark City they needed to find a way to scale it. It only took a few minutes to decide on the best course of action.

The answer came in the form of an Ascended Scavenger that was capable of piercing its legs into the walls and thus capable of vertical climbing while carrying the cohort all the way to the top.

'I'm sorry Saint, but Scurvy is now my new favorite Shadow. Not even you could do this.'

Soon after, they can be seen at the top of the large stone walls, getting a clear view of the whole Dark City, and most importantly, the Bright Castle.

Even Wyatt is stunned when he sees it in person. He notes how the descriptions never properly gave him a sense of the sheer scale of the place.

In his mind, the Dark City was never much more than a castle and a cathedral, but he's swiftly disabused of that notion when he sees that it is, in fact, a city, and a large one at that.

After a few minutes of appreciation, Cassie is the one to break the silence. "Now what?"

'(I'm also wondering just what the plan is.)''[We wait of course. Can't enter without a guide after all.]'

"We should wait." Sunny parrots. He then asks his own question.'(Can't you guide us?)'

'[Look down there. Do you not see all those monsters there... most are Fallen. Do you really trust me to lead you through all that?]''(It didn't seem entirely unreasonable.)''[I'm flattered but I can't. Let's wait for someone to come over here. Whether it'll take days or weeks, I don't know.]'________________________________

It ended up taking about two weeks for Effie to come back to her hunting spot.

Rather than twiddle their thumbs and wait for a sign, like Sunny and Wyatt did on their first few days in the Forgotten Shore, everyone took a more active role in preparing themselves for any potential problems.

With Scurvy out in the labyrinth collecting Soul Shards from his brethren, with a bag in his hand this time, the shadow guiding him found iron spider territory.

'[Ha... ha..hahaha! Sunny, we've struck gold!]''(Was this a part of your "grand plan" or something? What's so special about these Nightmare creatures?)''[Before I answer that, what do you know about spiders? The normal ones you see on Earth.]''(They can usually be found in old dusty places where no one ever goes. I did hear some stories about large versions of those things swarming most of the Eastern Quadrant when the Spell first arrived.)'

This mentioning of past events intrigues Wyatt and he decides that he wants to know more.

'[The Eastern Quadrant? Which continent is that on?]'

Sunny hesitates as though he's not sure of the answer.

'(I think it's the small one below... what was it...Asia! The small one below Asia.)'

Wyatt thinks for a moment and then comes to a realization.

'[Oh.. My.. God.]''[Of course. Hahaha, of course it was Australia. Spell must have a sense of humor or something. Next you'll tell me it got overran by Super-Emus, hehe. Anyway back on topic. How do you think they know when to hunt?]'

Taking a second to look through his shadow, Sunny carefully responds.

'(When... something's in their webs?)''[Bingo.]'

Under Wyatt's command, the Shadow walks into the steel threads and started trashing around.

This move attracted dozens of mega sized spiders, all wanting a taste of the large crab in their web.

Sadly for them, they never even got a chance to break through the shell.

With the almost overwhelming supply of Soul Shards the Iron Spiders brought in, they would be able to buy whatever they wanted at Stev's Memory market.

The best part was, Nephis herself agreed that, since they earned the Shards with their Shadow, they were free to make use of them however they wanted.

There was something wrong however.

'[Have you gotten any Memories yet?]''(No? I thought you were getting them.)''[How could I get them, it's your Shadow killing them?]''(Well it makes no sense. We've killed hundreds, you'd think there would be at least a dozen Memories. Although when you think about it, we haven't gotten a single Memory since the Tree.)''[Do you think there's something preventing us from getting Memories?]''(If there were something powerful enough to do that, then why would it attack us?)''[...you're right]'

'Thinking back, I might've done some damage when escaping that Fate Cage after I died. Hopefully there are no hard feelings.'

Following their conversation they get right back to farming Soul Shards.

Nephis was also doing her part by teaching Sunny how to fight, with Wyatt putting far less effort in learning as he spent most of his free time trying to figure out how to weave.

That didn't stop him from trying to take advantage of her teachings in a way he could. Whenever she discussed mentality or concentration exercises, Wyatt learned what he could, and put them into practice when studying the weaves of his Memories.

Cassie herself had many visions of the future, with Wyatt noticing that the far away ones line up almost perfectly with the web novel, but the near future ones have many inconsistencies with what he remembered.

In the end, he decided to chalk it up to simply not remembering the book as well as he thought he did.________________________________

When Effie came back, she was greeted with the sight of a pale kid with a full sack draped over his back, a tall woman with silver hair, and a blonde haired beauty.

With a grin on her face she addresses the three of them.

"Well well well, if it isn't a bunch of fools trying to take over my hunting grounds."

Wyatt who fears that a fight will break out, is quick to correct her with a polite smile on his face.

"No of course not ma'am, we actually just arrived from the labyrinth.""Obviously. I was joking with you. But at least I found the fool."

At this moment the smile on his face freezes as he stares at Effie.

'[Sunny, you're right. We should just take our chances of making it to the city without her.]''(Is this perhaps the mysterious "mean but strong" person you mentioned?)''[Yeah... it is.]'

She then continues. "But still, a few months in the labyrinth. Not bad, good to see other people survived this year." Effie raises her hand for a fist bump.

"Ha. I'll have you know, we didn't just survive, we thrived." Wyatt says as he gladly bumps her fist.

'(Are you gonna brag like this to everyone?)''[Only to some, don't worry.]'

"Impressive." Effie said sarcastically. "So doofus, is your job to carry the luggage while these two lovely ladies keep you alive?"

Nephis quickly takes over before Wyatt explodes.

"Actually he has a rather strong utility Aspect. He's more than pulled his weight these past few months."

Cassie then joins in to defend him. "Yeah, he even told us to wait for you to guide us through the city."

"An oracle then?" Effie asks with a hint of admiration. The use of a reliable oracle couldn't be understated in an environment like the Forgotten Shore. Cassie herself being a prime example.

"Sort of." Wyatt responds. He then asks Effie for help, as much as his pride is telling him not to.

"Do you perhaps have something to help me make this bag look less full." "I do actually have a Memory like that. It's a bag that's bigger on the inside. Are you sure you can afford it though, it's rather pricey.""Money is no object, I assure you.""One hundred Souls Shards.""eh"

This number gives Wyatt pause, but he's not going to lose like this. He can't afford to give Effie any future ammunition.

"Deal."

Now it's Effie's turn to be surprised. It should be unthinkable for anyone to give up that many Soul Shards. Not even the Bright Lord has that kind of spare change lying around.

She actually didn't want to sell the bag in the first place. It was just a number she gave to dispel any thoughts of him wanting to buy it. But it's too late now, she gave her price and she'll be damned if she gets embarrassed like this. She can only hope that this boy was lying about having that many; for whatever reason.

The boy opens his bursting sack and she sees it filled with hundreds of Awakened Soul Shards. As he slowly starts counting the Shards as though in pain, she prepares to give him her precious bag.

When they make their exchange, tears can almost be seen in both of their eyes.'(Absolutely amazing, I don't think I've ever had the pleasure of seeing a deal where both sides lose.)''[Please. I beg of you. Shut up.]'

[You have received a Memory: Hobo's Bindle.]

Memory: [Hobo's Bindle].Memory Rank: Awakened.Memory Tier: IVMemory Type: Tool.Memory Description: [When forced to leave, he couldn't decide what to take, so he took it all.]Memory Enchantments: [Bottomless].Enchantment Description: [Can hold far more than its size would suggest.]

Wyatt quickly deposited all of his Shards in the new bindle. He becomes satisfied when he sees that it still looks like an empty bag.

"Now what?" Nephis asks.

Wyatt is the first to answer."Now we head off to the Bright Castle."

Effie however is more concerned about their safety."Just to be clear, how much do you know about BrightCastle?"

"I know about Gunlaug, his underlings, the basic rules of the castle, the tax, and the Memory market.""And your two companions also know this?"

Wyatt then turns to face Nephis and Cassie."I think I told them."

The two of them nod in agreement, bringing only more questions for Effie.

"Well crap, why even head here in the first place? Is there really no way to leave?"

"Technically there is. There's a second nightmare seed somewhere around here. You're free to challenge it, then you'll go back home. As a Master to boot.""Tempting but I really would rather survive. Anyway what are your names.""You can call me Wyatt, also where's your respect? Is that the kind of attitude you take on when speaking with your elders."

'(Are you serious?)''[I'm not gonna lose Sunny. If we don't show that we can't be made fun of easily, then, well, you've met her now, what do you think will happen?]''(I think you'll end up making a fool out of yourself.)'

Effie looks at him funny and then laughs."Ha, I swear these brats get bolder every year. Couple months ago someone else entered the castle, said he's a legacy. You two would make great friends."

Wyatt looks offended at her statement."Oh no we wouldn't."

Before Wyatt can continue arguing, Cassie decides to introduce herself."Hello I'm Cassia. This is my friend Nephis. She actually has a True Name."

'DAMMIT CASSIE!'

This gets a whistle out of Effie."Impressive, what is it?"

"Changing Star." Nephis responds.

"What about doofus over there. Does he have one or what?"

The atmosphere suddenly grows extremely tense as Cassie snaps her head towards Effie and Nephis looks on nervously.

Wyatt chuckles a little and slowly raises a hand, grasping Effie's shoulder.

"Effie, how lucky you were to ask while I'm in charge, otherwise, you would've already been dead. Never ask for my True Name, especially not when "he" is in control. Understood?"

Effie seems to understand the threat, and while she's curious about what he means, she can tell from the faces the other two made that it's not just a bluff.

From how mortified the other two were, she thinks it's possible that someone else made the mistake of asking while this "he" was in control and faced disastrous consequences.

"Got it."

Effie then continues."Well it seems you know my name, but you can call me Effie, pleasure to meet you."

"Nice to meet you too." Wyatt says, much more cordially.

'(What the hell!)'

'(What'll you do if those two ask for my True Name! Do you have no impulse control?)'

'[...Sunny, I don't know how to break it to you, but they already know. They've known for months. Cassie saw it in one of her visions.]'

'(...)'

'(wha...)'

'[She also saw you kill the person who asked, so they've been quiet about it. I'd strongly recommend you talking about it with them.]'

After dropping this critical piece of information, Sunny growls at Wyatt.'(You knew this and you just stood back. AND DID NOTHING!!!)'

'[Damn you man, what was I supposed to do? Deactivate her Ability? Kill her? If she dies we all die. You know that. From the moment we first met, there was nothing I could've done to change it.]'

'(You could've done something, anything! You know what's at stake.)'

'[I know what's at stake, better than anyone here. What's at stake goes far beyond the Forgotten Shore. We need them, whether you want to admit it or not. But you know what. If you personally don't want them anywhere near you then I'll respect your wishes, but only if you make your decision no sooner than a week from now. Spend at least a week to cool down, think about it and then decide.]'

'(And what if the option I pick isn't what you want?)'

'[Then as much as it pains me, I'll have to pick between you or them. Although it's not like I really have a choice here.]''(Good, I'll hold you to that.)'

'I swear, this man is so suspicious of me.'

"So Effie?" Nephis asks."Do you mind taking us to the castle?"

"Sure but not today. I came here to hunt and I can't go back empty handed."

'Just as well, I'll need to make a disguise today. Otherwise Caster might be a problem.'

Wyatt then finished the conversation."By all means then."________________________________

The next day, after a successful hunt. Wyatt grabbed a large scale from a snake-like Nightmare creature and fashioned it into a mask with small holes for the eyes.

He then grabs the fur off of another Nightmare creature to make an ugly coat that can cover up any defining features like the Puppeteer's Shroud or his hair.

They then make their way to the Bright Castle. Sunny chose not to show himself around her just in case.

Effie makes the rules of the journey clear. No touching anything, no breathing too heavily, no looking, no thinking, no feeling, and a myriad of other strange rules.

At around midday they made it to the Bright Castle, where Effie left to her own hovel in the Bright Slums.

The slums here were a pit of despair, full of people who could barely find the will to look up at the new arrivals. Those who did however would notice two beautiful girls walking side by side toward the castle. In front of the girls was a masked individual wearing the fur of a Dread Lion.

In front of the Bright Castle, they went up the stairs and met the guards standing at the gate.

"Hello ladies, how can I help you on this fine day?"

'Did I just get ignored?'

Without saying a word, Wyatt grabs his bag from the coat and pulls three Shards out. The guards quickly got the message and grinned lecherously.

"Alright, I can see how you snagged such beauties. Ladies, don't follow someone like him, I can give you a far better time than some rich snob could."

'Unbelievable, do none of the guards have basic human decency.'

A sharp look from Nephis was enough to get them to back off at which point they entered and met the gaunt teenager running the front desk; Harper.

'You know what you fool, I'll personally see that you're kept alive.'

"Hm. Ahh, Hello. Oh, just some new guests. Hello. How fortunate you are to enter BrightCastle. I'm Harper, and I'll be checking you in, can I have your names?"

When looking at the paper he sees the date. It was the spring equinox, his birthday.

"I'm Cassia."

"Call me Unknown." Wyatt says in an artificially deep voice.

'(What kind of crap are you playing at this time?)'[Listen up you uncultured Mongrel, secret identities are cool.]''(Who are you calling a mongrel?)''[I'm not calling you a mongrel, I'm calling you Mongre-]'

Following his outburst, the pain from his flaw causes him to groan a bit and seeing Harper looking at him funny he is forced to come to a decision.

'Do I stop acting like a chuunibyo or do I go even further. Hmm. Well, all work and no play.'

"Growl, stop looking at me like that, don't you know the alpha wolf has no problem dealing with a mere cat, or perhaps it's my aura that's leaving you frozen in shock."

Taking a peek behind him with shadow sense he sees that Cassie and Nephis are also frozen in shock.

'That's fair, I might've gone too far. Kukukuku, I regret nothing.'

When he tries to continue, he finds that his mouth isn't opening.

'Oh Sunny's back out.'

At the same time, a hand reaches from behind him, covering his mouth and pulling him behind the two girls.

"Hello, I'm Nephis. Would you mind telling us a little about this place?"

"Umm, uhh. Oh, sorry! Not at all. This place is run by the Bright Lord, who managed to create a perfect civilization in this dreaded land. For the mere price of a Soul Shard every week, you can have your own room, food, and protection. But not only that. There are also many amenities to be had, such as a gambling den, a music lounge, even a bar. So please, enjoy your stay."

The first to speak up after his little speech is none other than the unfathomable "Unkown".

"A music lounge? Do they have a piano?"Sunny asks in a low voice, at Wyatt's behest.

'I really should treat myself, it's my birthday after all.'

A bit unsure of what might follow, Harper cautiously gives his answer."They do as a matter of fact... might you be a piano player?"

"I have played the piano before."

"Well good news, you can actually purchase yourself a membership. I can lead you there if you'd like. But first, how many rooms would you like?"

"One.""One""Three."Said Nephis, Sunny and Cassie at the same time. They all then slowly turned to look at each other.

'Hahaha. The more things change, the more they stay the same.'

'[Please give me back control. I swear not to do anything too embarrassing. foratleastaminute.]''(How shameless can you be? Fine, but if you do anything like that again then no more body privileges for at least a day.)'[Dont worry. You can trust me.]''(No I can't.)'

Nephis then continues: "Do you have a few rooms right next to each other?""Why yes, we have plenty of spare rooms in the Tower of Dusk.""Then three.""Alright follow me to your rooms, and don't worry, you can now leave your hard times behind. You're perfectly safe behind these walls."

On the way to their rooms, Harper gives them the breakdown of the rules to the castle, such as not letting any light leak out at night. He also mentions to not fight back if the guards overstep their boundaries, in a roundabout way.

At their rooms they Harper gives them each a mundane pair of clothes very similar to the ones the other tenants wear saying that it is complimentary for all new guest, Wyatt gladly accepts the clothes as they will be integral to his secret identity plan.

After finding their rooms, Harper led Wyatt to the aforementioned music lounge. When they arrived Harper told him that he had to leave and get back to work. Wyatt thanked him by tipping him a Soul Shard which caused the teenager to tear up a little.

When Wyatt tried to enter, a burly guard stopped him and asked he if he was a member. When he said no, the guard explained that it cost one Soul Shard a month to join, which wasn't going to stop Wyatt who had hundreds of Shards.

He paid and the guard let him through but when he entered he saw something he could never have possibly expected.

Sure there were a few people simply enjoying the music being played, but what was even more curious, was the man playing the music.

The tall man with perfectly smooth ivory skin, gorgeous red hair, electric green eyes and soft lips, was playing an almost hypnotic tune on his guitar, especially to Wyatt who couldn't enjoy any good music these past few months.

'I came looking for treasure and found something even better as Kai so eloquently put it once. Okay, I've been planning this meeting for weeks. I'm gonna gaslight him so bad that he won't even think I'm human.'

'[Sunny I'm gonna do something soon, just don't interrupt me. It's important.]''(I'll decide when I interrupt you.)'

'He seems a bit mad. I wonder why.'

After half an hour, the man stepped off the stage and that was when Wyatt struck.

"Hello, that was beautiful. I haven't heard music that good in hundreds of years.""Oh you flatter me; say I haven't seen you around, are you a new me-... What did you say?"

'My god, even his voice is perfect.'

Wyatt chooses to ignore the charming man's question."No no, it's true. But your voice is even more beguiling. Coming here really was a good idea. It's actually my birthday today and I decided to enter the castle. I was curious about this place for a while, and I'm rather enjoying it."

The idol begins nervously chuckling.

"Hehe, that's great. How old are you now?""I've lost track. Anyway, apparently there's a Memory market run by a fat man, would you mind showing me the way?"

Wyatt then continues.

"Oh dear, where are my manners, you must be wondering who I am. My name... well some people refer to me as Sunless, sometimes they say Sunny. Since you're my friend now, I guess you can call me Wyatt. What's your name?"

The man is already turning pale and sweating slightly, although he's clearly trying to not let much fear show.

'(What are you doing?)''[Shut up Sunny, I'm trying not to laugh. This kind man's flaw is that he can tell whether or not people are telling him the truth.]''(How the hell is that a flaw?)''[Pfft, because people like me exist. Every word I'm saying is technically the truth.]''(Hehe, don't terrorize him too much.)''[No promises.]'

"It's Kai. I'm afraid the Memory market is quite a big secret, I don't know where it is so I can't lead you."

Wyatt then locks eyes with Kai, most of his face still concealed by the mask, leading to an impression of a furred monster with the shape of a human. He looks deeper and deeper into his eyes until he squints once he thinks that Kai is nervous enough.

'Goddamn, his eyes are so pretty.'

Coldly Wyatt then says:"You know, they say eyes are the window to the soul. I personally killed a Great Devil after setting my eyes on it. After setting my eyes on you, I can tell that you know where the market is. So do you really want to lie to me?"

Kai's knees are buckling at this point and he's getting more and more nervous with each line."No sir, but..."

Wyatt then breaks up in laughter."Don't worry, I won't eat the poor man, I genuinely want to buy stuff."

Kai then becomes a bit more relaxed but not by much."Then I suppose I can lead you. If you wouldn't mind giving me a few hours first, I have to work and then get an invitation for you."

Wyatt then hands him a Shard. "Please, it's my birthday and I really want to go soon."

But Kai, much to Wyatt's surprise, refuses.

"These people are paying for my services, it wouldn't be right for me to leave without notice.""Fine, but I want to play the piano. I haven't done that in a while and want to keep my skills sharp.""Of course, there's a room nearby where you can play, now please let me work.""Okay."

A few hours later, Kai came back and started to lead him to the Memory market.

"So Kai, it seems like you run that music place. You must be pretty rich, by the standards of the Forgotten Shore anyway.""I am, yes. I actually have quite a fortune. No less than twenty Shards. Why?""Can you act like you're the one buying the Memories?""Sure. How many do you want to buy?""I don't know, I'll have to see what they have first."

While walking through the halls, a few people greeted Kai.

"You seem quite popular around here.""Yeah." Kai sighed."I actually had a bit of a reputation before coming to this place."

Wyatt then acts interested."Oh, as a musician?""As a singer actually. You might know of me. I'm in a band called Night&Gale.""Umm... it sounds familiar but I don't think I've ever heard your songs... is it named after the bird, Nightingale?"

Kai pauses for a second.

"The... what?""The European bird.""Are you a human, do you actually come from earth?""I am a human, isn't that obvious? You're also a human. We're both humans in our natural human bodies."

Kai then looks down and mumbles quietly."can you please stop speaking"

With that, they make their way to the market.

Arriving at the market, they open the door and are greeted by a large room containing over a hundred Knick-Knacks.

In the center, a rotund man was sat, eyeing up his two newest customers.

"Night, my friend, good to see you again. And who might this masked rat be?"

Kai then raises his eyebrows in fear when he realizes that his newest "friend" just got insulted, although quickly lowers them before anyone can notice.

"Hello Stev, good to see you too. I'm here to buy Memories, and this one right here will be pointing me to the best ones.""Hah, spend as long as you want."And so Wyatt does.

He spends nearly an hour looking at all of their Spell weaves, and deciding which he likes best.

Rather than looking for pure quantity, like Sunny did, he chooses to go for the higher quality items.

Sunny also is there acting as a second opinion for any Memories that might be useful to purchase.

There is one Memory though, that Wyatt intends to get no matter how terrible it looks. The broken, stony Memory that sits in an unlit corner of the room. With the ability to use his blood as ersatz Soul Essence, he feels it might be repairable.

In the end, he decides on a large bunch of Memories that he thinks would be useful for traversing through the Dark City and Forgotten Shore.

He then gives his list to Kai who expresses concern about the cost of Memories and the empty looking bag he was just handed. After a peek inside however all his worries disappear and he walks up to Stev with the energy of a man whose days are numbered.

"Let's see, I'd like that one, that one, that on, tha-"

He gets interrupted by Stev mid sentence."Night, those are all rather expensive Memories, are you sure you can afford them?""I am."

With a big grin Stev simply says:"Alright."

The Memories were then bought at a price of around two hundred and fifty Soul Shards. With each progressive Memory everyone got quieter until the end when Stev laughs boisterously at what might have been his most profitable day in years.

"Hey rat, you're welcome back anytime. Not that I could stop you if I didn't want you to come back. You must've been lurking around for years to collect this many, I don't even want to imagine how many you absorbed."

Not missing an opportunity to brag, Wyatt refutes his claim."No, it only took me a week or so to collect those. Although I've only ever absorbed three."

'(Isn't Kai supposed to be the one buying?!)'

"Sorry, I meant, uh, it took Kai a week to collect those and he's only ever absorbed three."

'(You absolute fool.)'

Kai thinks back to Wyatt's claim of killing a Great Devil, and the lone Supreme Soul Shard in the bag. He chooses to stay quiet however and hopes to leave as soon as possible.

"How interesting, I didn't know my friend Night was such a deadly hunter, Kefufufu.""Please Stev, I really must get going.""Alright, off you go."

Outside the room, Kai hands over the Memories that he got.

Six went over to Wyatt, five others were sneakily taken by Sunny without Kai noticing. The charming archer himself was given a bow along with an arrow Memory. Wyatt however, didn't explain how he knew that Kai used a bow. Wyatt and Sunny decided to give the last two Memories to Nephis.

"Could I trouble you for something else Kai?"

Kai, already on the verge of tears, simply nods.

"Great! Follow me."
