Chapter 11 - DVR to the Heart

07:26, 19 May 2022

Rumlow pulls up to your apartment unit and there was only a few paparazzi posted outside.

"Better than I anticipated." He parked the car onto the curb and reached in the back seat to grab the food and he also pulled out a sweatshirt. "Here, wear this."

The night was chilled but you were only a few steps away from being in your apartment building. "What for?" He nodded towards your knuckles. "Your knuckles are going to be the prize winning shot for them. The sleeves are long enough to cover them up and the hood can help shield some of the flash from your eyes."

You slipped it on and you were drowning in it, but it was really comforting. The sweatshirt felt like being wrapped in a large comforter after a long day. He stepped out and walked over to your side and opened the door for you. "Ready?" He whispered to you and you nodded in return.

"Can you carry this?" he handed you the food and when you stepped out of the SUV he held your other hand and pushed you slightly behind him. "MOVE!" He yelled and shoved the press out of the way, "LEAVE HER ALONE." You made it to the door and he stood behind you as you placed the key into the lock and opened the door. You heard the click and opened the door for you and Brock. Making sure to shut it behind you.

The second you were in the building you pulled the sweatshirt hood down and smiled at him. Your body could tell it was the end of a long day and it was ready to finally be able to relax. You took the elevator up to your apartment and after stepping in placed the food on the counter and turned the light on.

"The bathroom is to the left, my room to the right and straight ahead will be our oasis for the night." You sat down on the bar stool for your kitchen counter and watched as Rumlow pulled out various Chinese food containers. He made you a plate and slid it over to your side of the counter, "You wont be disappointed."

He was right, it was one of the best take out meals you've had. You both were quiet while eating at first but it started to feel awkward, "How about a game?"  You took another bite of food.

"What kind of game?" He looked at you and from his expression you can tell he was carious.

"Well, although today was strange and we were forced together I really don't know you. I was thinking 20 questions could get us a little more familiar with each other."

"Ok, but we alternate who gets to ask the question." He pointed at you with a fork, "I don't want to feel interrogated by you."

"Fair, so you start."

"Ok, what is the deal with you and Stark?"

"I worked at Stark Industries for a long time, and my department wasn't gaining enough profit. Long story short, I insulted him and he met me in my office and promised to fund my project. It was a water conversation project, it could have saved millions of people from dehydration and unsafe water supplies. Tony even helped me in creating the demo but one day he asked me to meet him for breakfast and wanted to sell it for profit and not expand on any humanitarian ideas. So, I quit and walked away. It was the last time I saw before today."

"Anything romantic?"

"Um, Excuse me?" You smiled, "That would be a back to back question."

"Right, sorry." he gestured for you to ask the next question.

"What's waiting for you at home?"

"Three frozen pizzas, a case of beer, and a TV." he shrugged, " I live in the definition of a bachelor pad."

"So, back to my other question. Did you and Stark have any romantic relationship?"

"No. Everything was strictly professional." When you responded he looked rather happy.

"How did you get roped into this with me today?"

"By chance," He begin picking up for you, "I got the security call and happened to be at the SHIELD headquarters today. I saw you surrounded by the crowd and knew I wanted to help you. So I notified Fury of my activity and it turns out you were exactly who we needed."

"Any family?" he looked back at you from the dishes.

You were quiet, "My dad passed of cancer when I was 18." You nodded to a framed photo on your counter, It was a picture of him waving at the camera. "My mom was never in the picture and my dad's parents passed before I was born." You fidgeted on the stool, " I don't have anyone."

"Now that can't be true. What about friends?"

"You're really bad at sticking to only one question!" You picked up your other plate and handed it to him, "But because you're doing my dishes I guess I can let it slide."

"After my dad died I moved here and got a job at Stark Industries. I moved up in the company and during that time I was good friends with a girl named Tessa. We had a little bit of a falling out around when I quit and we haven't spoke since." You walked into your room and shut the door still talking, "I met May she is running the shelter in Queens that brought me into SHIELD in the first place, but we just met so friend may be a loose term at this point." You opened your room door to reveal you changed into sweat pants and a white t shirt. You placed your hair in a top bun when you walked back to your stool. You folded up the sweatshirt he gave you and slid it to him.

"What's your favorite show or movie?" He was taken back by the less prying question.

"You're going to laugh."

"Probably." You both smiled at each other.

"Guess what you think it is first?"

"Hmm, you are obviously into fitness."

"Obviously?" he was flattered and you rolled your eyes in front of him.

"You're an agent. So, I am going to guess some sort of crime show like CSI?" You felt pretty confident in your guess.

"No, it's The Office." He dried his hands and walked passed you into the living room. "I love comedy, I think because of the seriousness of my job." He grabbed the remote, "It keeps me sane."

"Well, in that case," you stood up and sat on the couch by him and took the remote from his hands. You showed him your DVR and it had every episode of The Office saved, "knock yourself out." He looked at you and clicked on the Pilot Episode, "Care to join me?"

"What a waste of a question." You stood up from the couch and went into your room and grabbed a blanket for each of you and a pillow for him. He turned the show on and you laid on the floor in front of the couch.

"Any regrets?" You faced the TV while he spoke.

"Yes, but I try not to think about the what if's too much. I can't change the mistakes I have already made."

You continued on with the questions until The Office was on season 2 and then your eye lids became very heavy. You were still laying on the floor and no matter how hard you fought it, and you tried hard as you were enjoying Rumlow's company, you were losing the battle at staying awake.

You aren't sure at what point you finally passed out but you woke up to a hand on your back, "Hey, Y/N." He lightly rubbed your back as you slowly opened your eyes. "Oh, I am sorry I didn't mean to fall asleep." You rolled on your back and stretched, you watched his eyes gaze across your body. He saw you noticed and quickly shook the lust off, "Do you want me to help you to your room?" He held out a hand for you and you let him help you up. "No I should be ok from here." You bent down and grabbed your blanket and looked at the couch. He had it all set up but you knew with his height his legs would be hanging off. "Actually, you take the bed." You nodded at the couch, "I fit comfortably on the sofa and it will make no difference to me."

"I really can't put you out like that." He stretched his neck, "Plus I should be the first person someone sees if they try breaking in. Remember I am here to protect you."

"Well if you change your mind just let me know." You walked into your room and shut the door. You laid down and covered yourself with the blanket and fell back asleep but every 2 hours you woke up to him stirring on the couch. Finally you couldn't take it anymore.

You flicked on the lights and he jumped up out of the couch ready to fight. "Whoa, stand down."

"You scared the shit out of me." He responded and sat down on the couch . "Come on," you offered him your hand. "What?"

 "You're laying in the room."

" I told you, I have to be the first line of defense."

"You will be, I set up a little pillow barrier. You will be closer to the door and I am still within eye sight in case something happens." He stood up, "Are you sure?"

You held his hand and walked him into the room and showed him the pillow divider. "Yes, but if you try any funny business I will make you regret it."

"I promise I wont, after all we work together now." You let go of his hand and walked over to your side and laid down. Brock turned off the light and did the same, you both slept comfortably the rest of the night.
