Firelights

04:55, 25 November 2024

Days later the X's go on a mission.

Minx and Jinx's instructions were simple, "Protect the cargo." Simple, except nothing is simple with those two.

Minx was draped along the rafters of the cargo ship, her hip-length pink hair falling over the edge. Boring, she thought while Sevika, Silco's right hand, conversed with the ship attendant.

Her attention was brought back to the job at hand when a henchmen below yelled, "Damn it, the Firelights!"

Flipping over, the girl jumped to her feet, balancing on the thin plank. Her eyes strained to observe the Firelights. She recognized a few, specifically their leader.

She watched as the crew threw orange crystal-like balls at the members of her group watching as they exploded into sticky spikes of orange.

Jumping down from the rafters she addressed the leader of the Firelights with one hand on her hip, "Tsk, tsk, using my formula now..." Minx stared at the leader straight into his masked eyes, "...Ekko."

His head raised in alarm before he sprung into action.

Racing forward he raised his clockhand weapon above his head and aimed his hit directly at her shoulder blade. Minx was too quick for him, dodging to her right she kicked his back in with her heel, hard.

Ekko let out a distorted groan of pain. Recovering quickly he grabbed her raised calf and spun her to the floor.

Minx grumbled to herself as she rolled along the ground, landing on her feet. Raising herself she used the distance he had created to her advantage. Taking the extra few seconds she had Minx reached into her side pack and pulled out a pink smoke bomb.

Throwing it directly in the Firelight's face she used the cover to speed behind Ekko. She took an elbow jab to his throat.

Landing on his knees Minx put her handgun to the leader's head.

Flashes of memories appeared in her head, of two children laughing happily at a bar. More of them fiddling around with junk they found, and even some of them attached at the hip with each other.

Was she really going to kill someone who used to be one of her best friends? Ebony's hands shook around the gun, her eyes wide in fear, not of her situation but of herself.

"Hi."

Minx snapped out of her trance right as Ekko landed a blow to her stomach. Falling to her knees she broke into a coughing fit.

Ekko made it to the edge of the boat before two snapping bombs were launched at his chest. Jinx was beside Minx now, almost shielding the girl with her own body.

Clicking her tongue Jinx swung her handgun around her pointer finger before taking it out of her holster and firing mercilessly. Hitting Firelight after Firelight she found herself face-to-face with one.

Jinx punched the Firelight across the face causing their mask to fly off into the distance.

Freezing, Jinx noticed the girl's hot pink hair. Flashes of blue and pink crossed her vision, distorting her reality. Memories of two girls when they were young invaded her mind, things she wished she could let go.

Standing dormant, Jinx didn't even move until she was pushed out of the way by Minx. The fire was nipping at her boots.

She hadn't noticed until the other girl had pushed her out of the way that the Firelight had set the airship on fire. Jinx hardly cared about the pain slipping into her system, all she cared about was killing that girl.

Minx beat her to it, shooting the hot-pink-haired girl in the back of her knees before landing a shot in her head, right between her eyes.

Watching as various Firelights escaped the ship Jinx whipped her machine around and shot. She kept shooting, her face distorted of fear and pain as well as anger. Spinning in circles, Jinx didn't pay any mind to who she hit until Minx put her small hand on her best friend's shoulder.

"I think you got them, Jinxie." She said, swinging her head to the side, her pink hair flowing.

"She fired on us," Sevika growled, opening a bottle of liquor with her yellow-stained teeth.

Silco sighed toying with a clipboard in his hands swaying in his swivel chair. "There are always mishaps in battle, their targets were the Firelights, and most, are dead."

The woman took a swig of her alcoholic drink. "Mishap? They both froze up and Jinx lost her shit," she grumbled. "I could've handled those brats, they're problems and we all know it."

Knocking seconds before entering Minx emerged from Silco's office door. "Last time I checked, Sevika, you were too busy being trapped by my exploding gel to handle any brat."

Before Sevika could answer Minx swung herself up on the rafters of Silco's office where she was met with a familiar face.

Jinx was lying down, her long braids dangling from the ledge she leaned upon with both hands tucked into her chest.

Her face was scrunched in a look of discomfort, pain, and annoyance. By the red burns on her ankles, Minx could tell that the burns were the cause of her external pain.

Approaching the girl further Minx gently tapped the girl's knee to alert her that she was there. Jinx's head only turned to her in acknowledgment before lying straight back where it was.

Sitting down where Jinx's knee was Minx lifted the girl's legs into her lap carefully, making sure that Jinx's angles were dangling off her criss-crossed knees.

"I expected more from you than excuses. It was your job to make sure things went smoothly. You failed, don't disappoint me again." Silco's deep voice loomed below the two girls.

Opening a silver tin, Minx began to gently smooth her remedy over Jinx's burns. She watched Jinx's whole body physically sigh at the feeling of relief.

Looking over the girl's bubbled red blister burns Minx smiled at the way the skin instantly began repairing itself turning smooth and a light pink.

Finally feeling at ease, both Minx and Jinx flinched at the slam of Silco's office door.

"What happened?" Silco said, his voice aimed above him.

Jinx tensed up again at the question, her body going rigid. "She already told you."

"I'm asking you two." He directed.

In seconds, Jinx fell below so she was sitting atop Silco's desk and pulling her knees to her chest. "One of those Firelight wackos was a girl... with hot-pink hair," she mumbled into her knees.

Silco sighed, setting his clipboard beside Jinx on his desk.

That's when they both heard plop on Silco's loveseat a few feet away from his desk, Sevika's former seat. On top of it was a small girl draped over the side of the couch.

"And you?" Silco asked, his question aimed at Minx.

She leaned more of herself off the edge making it so the front half of her was dangling in the air, "One of the Firelight dudes is– was– an old friend."

Silco turned in his chair, facing the two girls. Leaning back he handed Jinx a gold device. "None, of the Firelights will or ever have been your friend." Silco directed at Minx while she pulled herself into a tight ball.

Jinx leaned herself onto Silco's lap, his gold device in hand.

"Jinx. Your sister is gone, you know that as well as I do."

The blue-haired girl leaned back giggling. "Sisters, I know, you can't live with them, can't stuff them back in the 'ol baby maker," She scrambled.

"Today's screwup will set us back weeks, you two." Silco scolded.

"I'm sorry," Jinx apologized.

"Sorry," Minx shook her head.

"It won't happen again." They spoke in unison, shooting each other small smiles.
