Good Morning

Ed's POV

Tiredly, I trudged towards the kitchens, teenagers swarming all around me. Everyone was arriving today for the camp, they didn't look particularly friendly but you can't judge a book by its cover.

I was almost there when I bumped in to Carly: the camp organiser.

"Ed, you on your way to the kitchens?" She asked to which I nodded to. "Great, thanks for this."

"Anytime." I smiled.

"And I'll let it slide that you hit me in the face with a snowball." She smirked.

"Crap, that was you? Sorry." I apologised.

"I forgive you, only coz you're doing me a favour." She replied. "I better shoot though, in a rush."

"Alright, see you. And sorry again." I waved and walked off.

So it was Carly who I accidentally hit yesterday. It made sense. I was pretty surprised that she didn't go mad.

I pushed the kitchen door open expecting to see loads of catering staff, but no one was in sight.

"Hello?" I echoed through the room. "Anyone here?"

Louise burst through another door, mixing a bowl of something vigorously.

"Oh good morning, Ed." She quickly looked up to me and then back to her bowl.

"Mornin'. Where is everyone?" I asked.

"I sort of figured it out last night. Didn't you notice it was just you, me and Carlos here yesterday?" She looked at me.

"Yeah, and Carly. It was her I hit with a snowball." I informed her.

"Oh right." She lightly laughed whilst adding something to her mixture. "Well anyway, we were told to come a day early, right? All the cooking staff."

"Yeah, and all the teachers were supposed to come today but Carlos got here early."

"Exactly." Louise continued.

"What? I don't get it."

"If all the cooking staff came a day early and it was only you and I here, it means we are the only cooking staff."

"What?!" I watched as she poured the contents of the bowl in to a cake tin.

"I'm afraid so." She didn't seem too phased. She looked like she knew exactly what she was doing. I, on the other hand, did not.

"That's why Carly didn't get mad at me for throwing a snowball at her." I realised.

"Yeah, probably." She grinned. "So, Ed, please tell me you know how to cook."

"I know how to cook?" I asked. "Erm yeah..." I lied.

"You don't, do you?"

"Nope, not a clue." I admitted. "Unless you like beans on burnt toast that is."

"Then why are you working in the kitchens?"

"I was just doing a mate a favour." I explained.

"Hmm, well this is going to be tricky." She said whilst pouring the rest of her mixture in to another cake tin.

"I'm a fast learner and I'm sure you're a more than adequate teacher." I smiled at her.

"Well... I don't like to boast but I am pretty awesome." She modestly smirked.

"Prove it." I grinned.

"Alright. So we're going to make tomato soup, roast chicken and chips, then lemon drizzle cake for dessert. I've already made the cake and the chicken is marinating." She explained.

"Right." I took it all in.

"You can peel potatoes?" She asked whilst putting the two cake tins in the oven.

"Peel potatoes?" I raised my eyebrows. I've never peeled a potato before.

"This might be harder than I thought." She said.

I felt like such a dimwit. She must've thought I was so stupid. She got out the potato peeler and showed me how to do one.

"Now you try." She handed me a potato and the peeler.

"Alright." I took it off her and slowly moved it down the potato. "Am I doing this-" HOLY MOTHER OF GOSH. "Shit!"

I dropped the potato and the peeler to the ground as blood oozed out of my finger. I quickly moved it to my mouth and sucked on it. That potato peeling bastard just cut me!

"You're such a wimp." Louise laughed and walked off in to the other room.

This was not going too well. I picked up the potato and the peeler.

Seconds later, Louise appeared with a tiny plaster in her hand and a huge smile on her face. Glad to see my excruciating pain was humorous to her.

"Hear ya go." She carefully put it on my finger and pressed it down gently. She had a soft touch about her.

"Thanks." I smiled at her.

"You know you're probably going to cut yourself a lot. You gotta be a man about these things." She smirked.

"I'm as manly as they come. Have you ever been cut by one of these bad boys?" I held the peeler up.

"Many times, Ed. Many times." She patted me on the back. "Now I have to get to work. We have a deadline."

"How much time have we got?"

"3 hours." She informed me.

"Plenty of time." I smiled.

"If you say so..." She pointed to the mountain of potatoes I had to peel.

"You want me to peel all of them?" I stared at her. Was she insane? "There must be about 100 potatoes there."

"Well they're a lot of mouths to feed. After you've peeled them all you'll have to chop them in to chips."

"You want me to chop 100 potatoes?"

"Yep, that is correct. Don't blame me. It's not my fault Carly didn't think to buy pre-peeled and chopped potatoes. Blame her." She told me.

"Did you have to choose chips of all things to make?" I couldn't believe this. Was she being serious?

"It wasn't my choice." She said. "Just get on with it."

"Oh Lord." I sighed and started peeling. My finger was so sore!

"Don't worry, I'll come and help you once I've finished making the soup and have put the chicken in the oven." She assured.

"Right. Well I best get started."

As the minutes progressed, I developed my own technique of how to peel potatoes and I actually didn't really mind doing it. After 30 minutes of peeling, my arm began to get sore, however Louise came to help.

"You've done everything else?" I asked.

"Yep, just have to take them out of the oven when they're done. It'll take a while though." She told me and picked up a potato peeler and a potato.

"So you actually enjoy doing this? Cooking, I mean." I asked.

"Depends what I'm doing. I mean I don't exactly love peeling potatoes but I like creating new food, trying out new blends and spices, making cakes, stuff like that."

"Oh right." I replied.

"I'm guessing you don't really like cooking."

"Not particularly. I love eating food though." I smiled. "To be honest,  I don't really mind doing this now."

"See, you never cooked before, therefore you didn't like it. Now you're starting to cook, you're beginning to like it."

"Yeah, I guess so. Coz I have an awesome teacher you see." I grinned.

"Only the best for Ed Sheeran." She laughed.

"Of course." I smiled.

"Oh I love this song!" Louise beamed and turned up the radio which was playing quietly in the corner. Busted 'Air Hostess' was blearing out of the radio.

"Same! It's beyond epic." I agreed. What other types of music did she like? Should I ask? "So what other types of music are you in to?"

"To choose a specific genre, I would say R'n'B, but I love Rock, Pop, Indie... basically if I like the tune or the lyrics, I like the song." She explained.

"I feel exactly the same. Like I love The Beatles, but then I like Beyoncé and Eminem and Busted. I just listen to what ever floats ma boat." I told her.

"Exactly." She smiled. "You totally get me."

Did you just hear that? I totally get her! Oh my goodness. I tried to control the killer smile that so desperately wanted to surface.

Both our heads were bopping up and down as we peeled the potatoes. The music gradually got louder as the chorus approached.

"It's air guitar time!" I grinned and put my peeler down.

"What?" She giggled.

I jumped up on the chair and strummed my imaginary guitar. I held out a hand for Louise and she jumped up on the chair next to me.

"Air hostess, I like the way you dress..." I sang whilst rocking my head up and and down.

"You know I had to fly but I feel much better with you by my side and something something something..." Louise laughed and played her air guitar.

"I messed my pants, when we flew over France..." I jumped off the chair and screwed up my face.

"I'm gonna see you soon in a hotel room for a holiday romance..." Louise carried on and jumped off after me, strumming away.

"AIR HOSTESS!" We both yelled. "Na na na na, na na na na, na na na na!"

Both of our hair was in our faces, jumping up and down to the rhythm as we jumped. It was like an orange curtain across my face. The song came to an end.

"Where did you learn to air guitar like that?" I smiled.

"Hey, I'm a pro at air guitar." She smirked. "You wish you were as good as me."

"Obviously." I grinned.

                       *******

Louise and I sat at a bench, our chicken and chips steaming hot. There were teens everywhere, eating food and making noise. The canteen was fairly small and the teenagers were fairly loud.

I was about to take the first bite of my food when I noticed eyes were staring at the bench next to mine. One person had soup poured on them, and another with cake smeared on their cheek.

Another person stood up, about to yell something.

"FOOD FIGHT!" They yelled and as soon as everyone stood up, so did I.

"NO! NO FUCKING WAY!" I bellowed to which everyone in the canteen looked at me, food ready to throw. "WE'VE BEEN IN THAT KITCHEN FOR 3 HOURS PEELING THOSE DAMN POTATOES. YOU ARE NOT GOING TO JUST HAVE A FOOD FIGHT. NO WAY!"

They all looked at me as if I were mad.

"You are all going to sit down, eat your food and enjoy it. Then afterwards, you're going to thank Louise and I for making such a delicious meal for you." I ordered.

They all suddenly started to erupt with laughter.

"FOOD FIGHT!" Another person shouted and so it began.

Chicken, chips, cake, soup, the lot. All of it was slung around the room, splattering here there and everywhere. Louise and I just watched in horror.

"My potatoes. My poor poor potatoes." I felt like crying. All my hard work.

"Well, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em." Louise smirked.

She picked up her slice of cake and threw it at someone. I shrugged my shoulders and started to throw my chips.

Everyone started to run around the canteen as did Louise and I. It was utter chaos and mayhem. But it was so fun.

I was covered in mushed up potato and smudges of cake. Louise threw a handful of chips at me and I picked up a bowl of cold soup and poured it on her.

"You're so dead!" She giggled and we carried on throwing food in the mess of the canteen and no one was there to stop us.

I jumped in to the corner of the room and Louise slipped in to the space next to me. We watched the madness of the room.

"The whole morning. A waste of time." I sighed even though I was smiling.

"And you have to do it all over again in half an hour for dinner. Don't forget the washing up as well." She told me.

"What?"

"Still got dinner to make." She smiled. "But for now, enjoy the craziness."

She shoved cake in my face. I wiped it off and squashed it on her cheek.

"Mmm, how nice?" She stood up.

"Delicious." I wiped some off her nose with my finger and ate it.

"Gross." She laughed.

"Hey, food is food." I grinned.

She laughed and smiled at the ground. She had a beautiful smile.

"You wanna go throw some food at 12 year olds?" She joked but had a serious face.

"Yes, yes I do." We both stood up and re-entered the food war zone, firing balls of food in all directions.

The more time I spent with Louise, the more I grew to like her. Butterflies danced in my stomach every time she spoke to me. We were going to spend the next 4 days here together and they were going to be awesome.

I hoped.
