CHAPTER ONE
16:15, 16 September 2018CHAPTER ONEMELONIE'S POV
I walked into Seattle Grace, which was now known as Seattle Grace Mercy West. I knew that Seattle Grace and Mercy West were "rival hospitals", but hopefully, we can all get along. I was just hoping to make some new friends here. I didn't have a lot of friends at Mercy West.
I only know the names of a few doctors at Seattle Grace; Izzie Stevens, Cristina Yang, Owen Hunt, Alex Karev, and a few more.
I walked into the residents' lounge and put my stuff into an empty cubby. April Kepner took the cubby next to mine.
"Ready for the first day at Seattle Grace?" she asked, sarcastically cheerful.
"You know it," I replied sarcastically.
I put my scrubs on and pulled my hair back into a ponytail as the Seattle Grace residents walked in with their blue scrubs. We had orange ones because they ran out of blue ones to give us.
I saw Cristina Yang, Izzie Stevens, and some other resident with dirty blonde hair give April and I a look of disgust and I just gave them a confused look, sighing and turning my attention back to April.
"They look joyful," I joked, which made her laugh.
"They look like they want to chew us out and they haven't even met us yet," she sighed.
"Don't worry. They'll come around eventually," I replied. "I mean, they can't hate us forever. We work together now."
"They're going to hate us no matter what," Jackson Avery chimed in.
"You don't know that," I debated.
"Okay, Grey, okay," he smiled.
"Did someone say my name?" the blonde resident asked. I looked back at her with a confused look. "I swear I heard someone say Grey."
"Um, yeah, that's my last name," I chuckled, walking out of the residents' lounge with April and Jackson.
"Wait, did you just say your last name is Grey?" a redhead Seattle Grace resident ran after me.
"Yeah, why?" I crossed my arms.
"My name's Lexie Grey, and that girl you were talking to is Meredith Grey..." she trailed off.
"Wait, what?"
"What are your parents' names?" Lexie asked.
"Thatcher Grey and Ellis Grey, but my mom died not too long ago," I answered. "Why are you asking me this?"
"First of all, I'm so sorry for your loss. Second, you're our sister," she blurted out. I just stared at her. "Oh, I'm sorry... I shouldn't have blurted it out like that. You deserve some explaining. So, my dad is Thatcher Grey, but my mom's name was Susan. She died too. But, Meredith has both of the same parents as you... which means you're my half sister and you're her biological sister."
"Woah. I have sisters?" I looked at April, then Jackson, then to Lexie again. "You're my sister."
Lexie smiled and nodded, then all of our pagers went off. There was a trauma coming in.
I saw Meredith, Cristina, Izzie, and Alex run out and we all ran out back to wait for the ambulance.
"Our first trauma as Seattle Grace Mercy West residents. How do you feel?" I joked.
"More importantly, you just found out you have two sisters! How the hell do you feel?" April asked, which made me laugh.
"Well, I always thought I was an only child, so this is new," I responded.
Two ambulances showed up and we ran in different directions. I ran with Jackson and Alex to an ambulance, where the paramedics rolled a man out on a gurney.
"45-year-old male, sustained a knee injury," the paramedic informed us.
I helped Callie Torres check his wounds. Alex checked his head wounds and Callie and I checked his knee.
"That guy... the guy's dead. He hit a deer, and then the lady hit him, and then I hit the lady," the man said, followed by a groan, letting us know he's in pain.
"Knee's blowing up like a balloon," I pointed out.
"Hey, I'm hungry. Can I get something to eat?" the man asked us.
We all looked at each other, but didn't say anything. I hopped out of the ambulance and we rolled the guy out and into the hospital.
"His knee's really swollen," Jackson pointed out.
"No dip sherlock." Alex rolled his eyes.
I just looked at Alex and rolled my eyes at his unnecessary comment.
We got the guy, Joey, into a room and started working on him right away.
"Okay, somebody set up for a traumatic effusion drainage," Callie ordered. Joey groaned in pain. "And order him four of morphine."
The interns stared at us blankly. None of them moved to do what Callie had asked of them.
"She means one of you. Go," I sternly said. "Get her an 18-gauge needle and a 20cc syringe, and the morphine!"
The interns scattered away in search of the medical instruments we ordered them to get.
"Wow, you really know how to get them to do what you want," Callie complimented. "You'll fit in great," she laughed.
"Thanks," I smiled.
"Hey, uh, morphine's cool, but, I'd kill for something to eat," Joey chimed in.
"A healthy appetite after a trauma like this?" Callie asked, shock in her tone. "That's a very good sign, Joey."
Another doctor came in and handed me the x-rays, which I handed to Callie after the doctor left.
"Think he'll need surgery?" Alex asked.
"Depends on the x-rays," I answered for Callie as we all turned our backs to look at the x-rays together.
"Knee looks good," Callie informed. "No surgery."
I walked out of Joey's room and I stood at the desk, looking at some charts. I saw Meredith and I walked up to her.
"Hi," I shyly said.
"Oh, hi," she replied.
"Did Lexie tell you...?" I trailed off.
"That you're my sister? Yeah. She told me," she gave me a friendly smile.
"I swear I didn't know you work here. I didn't even know I had sisters until this morning. I completely understand if you don't want to talk to me," I laughed. "I know that our hospitals are rivals."
"Well, technically, we're not rivals anymore. We work together now," she shrugged. "I don't know you well enough to really have a strong bond, but we'll work our way up to it," she smiled. Then her pager beeped and she groaned. "Sorry, I have to go, but it was nice meeting you...?"
"Melonie," I laughed. "Bye, Meredith."
"Call me Mer," she smiled, running off.
I walked back over to the desk, just to see Joey's face turning a bright red and his face scrunched up. I kept a careful eye on him until he started to choke.
I ran into the room to see that Dr. Torres and Alex had left the room. Interns followed me in.
"Joey?" I called.
The monitor beeped rapidly, showing that his heart rate was through the roof. I took a popsicle stick and opened his mouth to see inside. I took my flashlight and shined it in.
Doctors rushed in to help me.
"There's a foreign body. His abdomen's rigid," I informed them. "Somebody page Dr. Bailey right now! Go!" I yelled at the interns. They all ran out of the room. I started to do CPR as the nurses put a breathing mask over his face. "Come on, Joey."
Soon, we had Joey in surgery. I didn't have a job in the surgery, even though I'm the one who saved his life. Alex got to scrub in instead of me, which I didn't find fair, but it's my first day here, so I guess I understand. I sat in the gallery and watched the surgery.
After the surgery, I walked out of the gallery, ready to go home, since Joey was saved and I didn't have anything else to do for the night.
Before I could get to the residents' lounge, Alex ran after me.
"You were great today," he complimented me.
"Thank you," I smiled. "You were too."
"What's your name again?" he asked.
"Melonie. Melonie Grey." I shook his hand.
"Grey? As in-"
"Meredith and Lexie Grey? Yeah," I interrupted him, knowing what he was going to ask. "I'm their sister. It's news to me too," I laughed.
"The Greys just keep on coming," he joked, which made me laugh.
"I guess so," I smiled.
"Well, Melonie, great job today," he said again.
"Thanks," I replied.
I walked off to the residents' lounge and changed back into my street clothes. I grabbed my stuff and walked out of the hospital.
