Hope

07:32, 27 April 2025

It had been three months since I relived the memory. I had been back in the room once since then, to relive one of the many time I was tortured. For some reason that wasn't as bad as the one with my family. Every day I trained, I woke up, ate a "proper" meal (one that was always disgusting), and went to the gym. The gym was simple except for the maze in the back. The maze was full of traps and tricks. I had to fight my way through and if I made it out in less than half an hour I would get dinner. If not, torture. After a while I got better at the maze and we moved on to advanced hand to hand combat which I excelled at. I always slept alone in my cell, that is until today.

I heard the door creak open and sensed someone come in with my spider senses, Hydra loosened the handcuff's power restraints to for my training. I jerked up into a sitting position and saw who was coming in, Mr. Abramov.

"Hello Soldier, glad your awake. I have someone new who is going to share cells with you," he stated as he inspected my face for any signs of weakness.

"Yes sir. May I ask his name?" I asked politely. They would hit me if I was rude.

"Abaddon Davis. I will inform you when we have his soldier name."

         "Yes sir."

He brought an unconscious boy with dark brown hair into the room and dumped him on the ground. As soon as he left I crawled over and pulled the boy into a sitting position. He looked around fourteen, one year older than me and wore a simple black jumpsuit like everyone here. His brown hair was messy and he was pretty fit. He was around my height just a bit taller but I was hard to tell when we were sitting. After making sure nothing was in his pocket I went and fell back into a restless sleep.

I startled awoke to a pair of chocolate brown eyes staring at me. I punched the face in front of mine and quickly stood into a fighting stance. The man I punched was Abaddon! Oops.

"I'm so sorry! Did I break anything?!" I asked startled as I walked towards him to see if he was okay.

"Luckily no, you have a very strong punch for a girl." He responded examining me.

"For a girl?" I crossed my arms and waited for him to say something.

"No no! Oh god I didn't mean it like that! I just meant most girls don't have super strength like you clearly have."

        "Oh... sorry."

"Nah it's fine. I should have been more clear. My name is-"

"I know your name, Abaddon; Mr. Abramov told me."

"Okay then... What's your name? Powers?"

"Ashlyn, Ashlyn Moore. I have spider powers which basically allow me to stick to walls, shoot webs from my wrists, super strength and I can heal faster than most. What's your powers?"

"Oh, none I'm normal. My dad sold me to Hydra for money so he and his wife could live a better life. They haven't given me powers yet. Did they give you yours?" He quickly changed the subject back to me and I decided to let him.

"No. A spider, I'm guessing a radioactive one, bit me and I got them."

         "Oh okay."

After that we didn't talk. We simply sat although I wished he would have said something. Me and my thoughts alone aren't very good so I went back to looking at Abaddon. Soon enough someone came in.

Mr. Abramov waltzed into the cell and looked around, crinkling his nose.

"Hmm. How are you two getting along?" He questioned.

       "Well." I responded curtly.

"Good. Today we will put a tracker in you and then we will have one more round of torture before your first mission. The torture will be electrocution."

I flinched. I hated electrocution. It was the worst form of punishment. Mr. Abramov left silently and I curled up in the corner, my head on my knees which were tucked to my chest. Fuck fuck fuck! I started to sob, Why did my life go to hell? Suddenly I heard someone shuffle closer to me. Abaddon? He put his arm around my shoulder and sat there silently. Eventually I stopped crying and I layed my head on his shoulder. I was comforted for the first time in years and I fell asleep quickly.

.  .  .

I startled awake to Abaddon shaking me.

He whispered, "I have a plan."

       A plan?

"What?" I asked just as quickly.

"I have a plan. You've been here way too long, we're going to escape."

      "What? How?"

"Er... I don't know yet, but I will soon!" He said the last part slightly louder.

I turned to the door, waiting for someone to barge in but no one ever did.

I turned back to Abaddon, "Don't you find it strange that everyone we've met speaks English?" I asked.

"Not really, if you have spider powers then your important. All the important Hydra employees speak English and Russian."

"Oh... wait, how do you know that?"

         "I... w-well I um..."

          "Abaddon!"

He took a deep breath, "My father sold me to because he was in debt from accidentally failing a Hydra mission even though he was one of their best. My mother left him once she realized who he worked for and it was just me and him then. He never liked me because he wanted me to also work for Hydra and I didn't. One day I was acting up and he sold me. Loaded me onto a truck and turned his back with a bag full of money."

My eyes widened, that was horrible! "I'm so sorry Abaddon."

"Hey it's cool, at least now I know a lot about Hydra to help us escape."

"Yeah I guess. So how are we going to do it?"

"Well... right after they switch guarding duty we could escape and grab weapons from the armory, then I will go take out all the guards while you free everyone else here. They all deserve to have a chance at life."

"How will we escape the cell? And the codes for the door to the armory?"

"If we get those handcuffs off, do you think you could pull the door out?"

"Yes but what about the codes to the armory though? I can't pull that door out too."

"I'll steal them next time they open the doors."

"Okay but how? It's not like you can just walk to Mr. Abramov and say "give me the codes". People would stop you before you even made it to him!"

"Right, but the training instructor that my dad introduced me to one time is very forgetful, even if she is good at fighting. She always has a list of codes in her back pocket my dad told me. I go up, hug her, and grab the codes before she even knows what's happening."

"Do you have to hug her though?"

"Eh," he shrugged, "it'll confuse her."

Weeks went by and we went through our torture, the electrocution was bad but I kept thinking about escaping to get me through it. When they put the tracker in he told me that it was deep so it would be difficult to remove . He also told me that if I died it would not turn off, so they could take my body. They implanted the tracker in my arm, very deep. I figured I could escape and then take the tracker off once I was in a safe spot. Then I would be free.

Whenever I came back from torture Abaddon never said anything, he just put his arm around my shoulders and let me lean on him. He had a couple rounds of torture too but not too much since they hasn't given him powers yet.

I started to notice little things a lot more, at least with Abaddon. Like how he always paced when he was worried and if he couldn't then he would tap his fingers. Or how he always fidgeted, even when nothing bad was going on. How he always is meeting with his hair. I found myself staring at him multiple times but

he never noticed, sometimes I even caught him staring at me.

I awoke to Abaddon sitting staring at the wall in front of us.

"When should we do it?" He asked not looking at me.

"A couple more weeks? So we can test all of our ifs till then," I suggested.

"Cool with me." He still didn't look away.

          "Is something wrong Abaddon?"

"You can call me Abe if it's easier.

"Well then Abe, it's something wrong?"

He sighed and turned to look at me. His eyes searched my face desperately, for what I didn't know.

"Ashlyn, I think I love you," He whispered.

I was surprised, but also I knew that was coming. I knew I loved him too. And I know, I know that we have to get out of here and maybe we can make it out after all. For the first time in a while, I felt hopeful.

          "I love you too."
