THE WALKING DEAD

FIVE WEEKS LATER(29 weeks pregnant — 7 months)

Five weeks had passed, and these five weeks were both stressful and exhausting, yet rewarding. For the first time in a while, I was relieved by the news I received from Michonne when she returned to Alexandria from Hilltop.

Weeks ago, Hilltop, the Kingdom, and Oceanside decided to ambush the Saviors and their outposts. At first, the attacks had been risky but with the help of everyone, the allied communities began to gain the upper hand, weakening Negan and the Saviors.

During the long decisive battle, Hilltop, the Kingdom, and Oceanside, finally defeated Negan's group, capturing him and the remaining Saviors. Jesus took the real Negan, keeping him and his main people prisoner while Ezekiel kept the remaining Saviors prisoner– seizing their weapons.

The end of the war brought a sense of peace over me and everyone else that we hadn't felt in months. All the communities were finally freed from the grip that Negan had, and we were all finally able to do as we pleased without the fear of the Saviors watching us from afar, waiting to take our belongings or kill our people.

We were all finally able to continue rebuilding the world into something livable, Abraham was thinking of constructing some bridges that would easily lead us to more towns that surrounded us. Glenn, Aaron, and Daryl found more supplies and were even able to save horses along with hogs to create a farm.

Sasha and Abraham were now officially a couple, though it wasn't a secret to most of us. Rosita at first was disheartened by the news, but with the help and support from Tara and Eugene, she moved on and started dating other people.

I was mostly surprised to hear that Carol and Ezekiel were in a relationship, but it was happy seeing Carol happy after everything she had been through. Daryl– being her best friend, of course– tried his hardest to get between the both of them, anxious that Ezekiel would do something to hurt her.

But I think we all knew Carol could take care of herself.

Through these past weeks, Carl had been hanging out more and more with this girl Enid, who was practically a daughter to both Maggie and Glenn. Carl had shared some of her story with us, telling us how and why she had ended up in Alexandria.

It didn't take long for Rick and me to realize that Carl had a small crush on the teen girl with how he would talk about her and the amount of times they hung out. I was happy to know that the 14-year-old had someone to hang out with other than me or his father, and I was excited to see more of Enid in the future.

Maggie and I were finally planning a small, beautiful, and intimate wedding for me and Rick. Of course, Rick was aware of our planning and he helped with what he could. The ceremony would be held at the church in Alexandria, a simple but beautiful setting that would be full of our friends and family. We decided on a date weeks after the war ended, giving enough time to prepare and invite everyone we could.

It seemed like days had passed in reality it was weeks and before I knew it, the day had finally arrived. It was today. It was this morning I woke at Maggie and Glenn's house, readying myself for what would possibly be the best day of my life.

I was getting married. For the first time, I was getting married.

I was full of excitement when I woke up, yet my stomach still swirled in anxiety. Years ago, before everything, I envisioned wearing a glistening white ball gown, pink tulips in my hands, and my hair in a tight bun as my father walked me down the aisle. My mom, Myles, his wife, and children would be in the front row, along with Hershel and Annette. Maggie would be my maid of honor, while Beth would either be my bridesmaid or flower girl– but I knew she would insist on singing as I walked down the aisle to my groom.

But everything was different now. Hershel, Annette, Beth, my mom, my dad, Myles, and everyone else was gone. I only had Maggie now– she was the only one I had left.

Maggie, though we weren't related by blood, we were still very much sisters. From a young age, it was my job to take care of her and to watch after her. For the past 2 years in this new unimaginable world, she had been my rock. She stood by me when I cut my hair and shared my tears and fears, and now, she was here to help me prepare for the most important day of my life.

And in the future, I would help prepare for hers.

The Rhee woman walked up behind me as I adjusted the smooth white silky dress, a simple but elegant gown that gently hugged my growing bump. I smiled at her through the bathroom mirror as she slowly reached over, placing a daisy flower crown on the top of my head.

My normally straight black hair was curled into simple waves, falling gently over my shoulders, and the flower crown added a delicate touch of natural beauty. The daisies made me sigh contently, reminding me of the times back at the farm when I'd make flower crowns with Maggie and Beth.

Maggie's eyes softened as she looked at me, her fingers adjusting the crown just slightly. "There," she whispered, her voice full of emotion. "Now you're perfect."

I turned to the woman, taking in the sight of her soft light blue dress that gently flowed over her small bump. I inhaled sharply, trying my best to keep my tears at bay. "Thank you, Mags. Thank you for everythin',"

Her sage green eyes glistened as she took a step closer and wrapped her arms around me in a gentle hug. "You don't have to thank me, Nola," she murmured, her voice steady despite the tears that threatened to spill. "You got my back and I got yours, right? You've done so much for me. And you deserve your happy endin'."

I clenched my eyes closed as I hugged her back tightly, feeling the warmth of her embrace and the bond that had grown only stronger over the years. I was thankful that 2-years-ago, I decided to go to the Greene farm, despite knowing it would forever change my life.

When we finally pulled away, both of us were blinking back tears, but there was a sense of calm and certainty between us. The day had finally arrived, and I felt ready– more ready than I thought I could ever be.

Maggie glanced at the clock and then back to me. "It's almost time. You ready?"

I took a deep breath and nodded, a nervous yet genuine smile tugging on the corners of my lips. "More than ready,"

With that, we left the bathroom, the echoes of our heels soft on the wooden floor as we made our way toward the front of the house. As we stepped outside, the sun was in the middle of setting, creating a beautiful blend of soft yet vibrant colors in the sky. The day was perfect, just like Maggie said, and as we walked to the church, I couldn't help but feel a permanent smile etch itself on my warm cheeks.

As we approached the church, the sounds of chatter and laughter filled the air, and I could see the outline of people gathered inside through the thin windows. Two unfamiliar men stood at the doors, small smiles on their faces as they noticed me and Maggie approach the doors of the church.

Beside me, Maggie carefully handed me a large and stunning bouquet mixed with daises, sunflowers, and a few wildflowers we'd gathered from the fields surrounding Alexandria. The bouquet was bright and full of life, a perfect reflection of the hope and new beginnings this day symboled. As I held it in my hands, I felt a surge of emotions within me– love, gratitude, and an overwhelming sense of belonging.

Maggie wrapped her arm with mine as the two men slowly opened the church doors, and as they did, the soft hum of familiar music floated out into the evening air. My lips wobbled at the sound of the beautiful guitar and voice, my head finally registering the song.

Kiss Me, by Sixpence None The Richer.

I took a deep breath, my heart pounding in anticipation as I stepped inside. The church was simple, yet gorgeous, decorated with familiar flowers that shared my name and candles that cast a warm, golden glow over everything. The wooden pews were full of people who were once strangers but became family, their faces overflowing with internal happiness.

Through the thick crowd of people, I was able to see the familiar faces belonging to Glenn, Daryl, Michonne, Carl, Judith, Sasha, Abraham, Eugene, Rosita, Tara, Denise, Carol, Aaron, and so many other people who I have considered family. They all looked at me with the same smile, their eyes glowing with joy.

As I turned my eyes, I felt a deep sigh of relief escape me, my grin widening, and my eyes growing heavier with unshed tears as I finally met the ocean-blue eyes belonging to the one and only Rick Grimes.

He stood at the very end of the aisle, wearing a classic yet well-worn black suit with a crisp white dress shirt, the top button left undone for comfort, and a soft blue tie. His brown boots, scuffed from years of wear, somehow seemed perfectly appropriate for the day. Rick's hair, slightly greying at the temples, was combed back except for a few curls, and his familiar scruffy beard was trimmed. But what struck me most was the soft look in his eyes– those dark blue eyes that had seen so much pain and loss, yet held a spark of hope and deep profound love that never once wavered.

He stood there with a slight, almost nervous smile on his face, his fiddling hands clasped in front of him as he waited. My heart thumped and swelled with love, and for a moment, everything else in the world seemed to fade into black and white. It was just him and me, two people who had found each other in the most unimaginable circumstances and had somehow managed to build a life together.

With one last deep breath, I began the slow walk down the aisle, each step bringing me closer to the man I loved. Maggie squeezed my arm carefully, her own eyes glistening with emotion as she looked up at me with care.

The music played softly in the background, the familiar tune of 'Kiss Me' creating a perfect soundtrack to this moment. As I walked, I could feel the eyes of everyone in the room on me, their smiles, their happiness, and their support.

When I finally reached the end of the aisle, Maggie slowly offered my hand over to Rick, who gracefully took it. The Rhee woman then pulled me into one long-lasting hug, pressing a kiss to my cheek before wandering over to Glenn who watched with a proud smile.

Once I managed to glance back up from the ground, my dark blue eyes met Rick's, his ocean blues glistening with unshed tears as he gazed down at me with an intense amount of love. I squeezed his hand tightly, the grin on my face growing only wider as I tried my hardest not to kiss him.

"You look beautiful, Magnolia Rose" Rick whispered, his voice barely heard over the humming of the music. I grinned wider, gripping both of his hands in mine. "My pretty flower."

Gabriel's voice brought me back to the presence as he began the ceremony, his voice breaking through the music that filled the church. I kept my eyes on Rick's before slowly turning to Gabriel, a tight smile on his face.

"Dearly beloved," he started, his voice calm and resonant. "We are gathered here today to celebrate the union of Rick Grimes and Magnolia Gates. In a world where so much has been lost, we come together to witness the beginning of a new chapter, one of hope and love."

"We have all known each of you through various trials and tribulations," Gabriel continued, "and we have witnessed the strength of your love and commitment to both each other and this community you both helped grow into something we've all admired. Today marks a moment where we set aside our struggles to celebrate something truly beautiful and remarkable: the joining of two hearts in marriage."

Rick squeezed my hands gently, and I could feel the love and reassurance through his touch. I turned to the ex-sheriff, the smile on my face not at all faltering as I glanced up into his glistening eyes.

Not a thing could go wrong at this moment.

Gabriel's brown eyes shifted from the congregation to us as he continued, "Marriage is a bond that unites two souls, promising to support each other through the challenges and joys. It is a pledge to stand together, not just as partners, but as companions and best friends."

I could hear Abraham let out a loud cheer within the crowd, resulting in a soft chuckle escaping both me and Rick as well as a few people who sat in the pews. Gabriel simply smiled, clasping his hands together as he turned to glance between me and Rick.

"Would either of you like to share vows?" he asked nicely.

Immediately, Rick nodded his head, murmuring a soft 'yes' in response. I felt my eyebrows quirk up as I gazed up at Rick, his eyes closed as he took a deep breath. Gabriel hesitantly gestured for the ex-sheriff to go on.

Rick took a deep breath, his hands trembling in mine as he began to speak. His voice was steady, but I could hear the depth of emotion that he was holding back. The church went silent, every person hanging on his words as he gazed down at me with those familiar piercing blue eyes.

"Lia," he began, his accented voice raspy and thick with emotion. "There were times in my life when I thought I'd never feel hope again. I thought I'd lost everything worth fightin' for. But... but then you came into my life, and everythin' changed. You gave me a reason to keep goin', to believe in hope, and real love. You helped me realize that there is still good in this world, no matter how dark things get. You've seen me at my worst, you've seen me do things that others would never forgive... yet you decided I was still worth loving,"

He paused, and I could see the tears welling up in his eyes, but he didn't let them fall. His grip on my hands tightened, and he continued, his southern-accented voice cracking in emotion. "I've seen what this world can do to people. I've seen it break the strongest men and women, some friends, some not. I've seen it take away everythin' from them. But you... you've made me believe that no matter what happens, no matter how bad things get, there's always something worth fightin' for, something worth livin' for. I've never met anyone as strong, courageous, and as full of life as you are, Magnolia Rose. And every day, I'm amazed by the love you show me, by the kindness you extend to everyone around you, even when you're hurtin' yourself,"

Rick's eyes searched mine as he spoke, his voice low but clear, as if he was speaking directly into my soul. "I know I'm not perfect. I've made mistakes, more than I can count. But you've stood by me through it all, even when I didn't deserve it, or even when you didn't agree with it. You've believed in me when I didn't– or I couldn't. You've shown me that it's okay to be vulnerable, to be afraid because we're in this together. And I want you to know, that I will spend every day of my life tryin' to be the man you deserve, the husband you deserve, the father our children deserve,"

He blinked back tears, his voice breaking slightly as he spoke his next words. "Lia, I promise to protect you, to stand by you, and to love you with everythin' I have, every single day for the rest of our lives. I... I know we've been through hell, but I also know together, we can create somethin' beautiful out of this broken world."

Rick's hold on my hands tightened, a deep breath escaping him once again. "You're my partner, my best friend, my love, my flower. And today, I promise you, in front of everyone here, that I will never stop fightin' for us, for our family, and for the future we're goin' to build together. I love you, Lia. So much."

A tear finally escaped his eye, and without hesitation, I reached up and gently wiped it away, my own eyes filled with tears. The room remained comfortably silent besides the soft murmur of gentle music playing.

Gabriel allowed a moment of silence to pass, giving us time to collect ourselves before he turned his attention to me. "Nola, would you like to share your vows?"

I nodded, my throat tight with emotion as I began to speak. "Rick," I started, my voice soft but filled with deep emotion, "I never thought I'd find love in a world like this. I thought those days were over for me, that I would just keep surviving, day by day. But then I met you, and everythin' changed. You helped me realize that love is much more than surviving and fighting. You showed me that even in the darkest times when the world is black and white, there's still room for color, still room for hope and love. You, Carl, and Judith brought back a light in my life that I thought was gone forever, and for that, I will forever be grateful,"

I paused, trying to calm the hurricane of emotions swirling within me. The room remained quiet, all eyes focused on us, but all I could see was Rick. My heart was racing, but the love and steadiness in his gaze gave me the strength to continue.

I took another breath, my eyes locked with Rick's, and continued, my voice wavering slightly but determined.

"Before I met you, I was just tryin' to get by, to survive in a world that felt cold and unforgiving long before the world turned into what it did. But you were the one to make me realize that for so long I had been just simply survivin', but you made me want to start living,"

"I never knew how to truly live or love until you showed me. You taught me even in the most hopeless situations, there is always a reason to keep goin'. I believe we were destined to find each other in this broken world, to build somethin' beautiful from the ashes we once knew, and to find our own piece of happiness amidst the chaos. You've given me more than I ever thought I deserved, and you've done it with such unwavering strength and compassion,"

A sudden soft sob left me, tears streaming down my face. Rick pulled me closer to him, his lips pursed together tightly as tears filled in his eyes. I quickly wiped the tears from my eyes, trying my hardest not to mess up the makeup I had put on. "Sorry," I whispered with a sniffle before continuing.

"I promise to stand by you and to love you with everythin' I have. Because with you, I've found a home, a family, and a love that's deeper than I ever thought possible. Together, we will face whatever comes our way, hand in hand, heart to heart, 'cause we are unstoppable,"

I took a deep breath, letting the final words out. "Rick, you are my everythin', and I am so incredibly grateful that I met you and your group that unforgettable day. Because from that day on, my life forever changed in ways I never could've imagined. I love you more than words can express, and I will always fight for us, for our family, and for the future we are buildin' together. I promise to be with you, through all the days and nights, no matter what. I love you, forever and always."

As I finished my vows, I could see the pure emotion in Rick's eyes, his face illuminated by the bright glow of the setting sun and the soft flicker of the candles. Gabriel allowed everyone a moment to collect themselves, his smile warm and understanding as he looked between us.

Gabriel cleared his throat and addressed the congregation. "Having heard the vows and promises made by Rick and Magnolia, we now come to the moment where we can formalize their union. Marriage is a commitment that binds two people together not just in times of joy but also through challenges and adversity. Rick and Magnolia have chosen to walk this path together, and today, we witness the beginning of their lifelong journey,"

The priest's voice was steady, and I could sense the gravity of his words as he continued. "Before we proceed with the declaration, is there anyone who objects to this union or has reason to believe that these two should not be joined in marriage?"

A moment of silence followed, but no one spoke, only the gentle murmur of acceptance and support filling the air. Gabriel smiled softly and turned back to us. "In that case, by the power vested in me and in of all those gathered here, I now pronounce you husband and wife. Rick, you may kiss your bride."

The toothy grin on my face faltered into a pure look of love as my glistening dark blue eyes gazed up at Rick's, his hands moving to rest on my waist and cheek as he leaned in. The tip of our noses touched, my hands sliding up to grip his shoulders.

"Kiss me, Richard Grimes," I mumbled gently, my eyes flickering down to his pink moist lips.

Without hesitation, Rick closed the gap between us, his lips meeting mine in a kiss that was soft and tender but carried the intensity of everything unsaid and every emotion we shared.

As the kiss deepened the world around us seemed to fade away, leaving just two of us in the comfort of our love. The soft hum of the guitar and the gentle applause from our friends and family created a backdrop of warmth and joy, but none of it felt more important than the connection we shared in that kiss.

My arms wrapped around the back of Rick's neck and as I did, Rick carefully swooped me off my feet and held me close. Our lips moved together gently yet firmly, our smiles breaking across both of our faces as our bodies and lips were pressed against each other.

The applause and cheers from our friends and family surrounded us, loud whistles erupting from Daryl as he clapped with a grin. Maggie stood by with a beaming smile, her eyes brimming with tears of joy as she held her hands to her heart. Glenn, Michonne, Carl, Judith, and the many other people who stood from the pews shared in the celebration, their faces filled with genuine delight.

Rick set me back down on my feet, his hands still gently resting on my waist as he gazed into my eyes, the corners of his eyes crinkled in pure pride and happiness. The softness of his expression spoke volumes, and I could feel the weight of our vows and promises settling around us like a warm embrace.

Gabriel's voice cut through the joyous noise, directing everyone's attention. "Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you, Rick and Magnolia Grimes!"

It seemed the applause, whistling, shouting, and music only grew louder, and Rick and I exchanged a heartfelt smile, feeling the support and pure love that poured from our family and friends. Hand in hand, we walked back down the aisle, the setting sun casting a golden glow over our new path.

•••

The sun had officially set, the reception area only glowing with the soft light belonging to candles and Christmas lights. You could see the outline of the crescent moon reflecting against the lake as it sparkled in the cool evening air.

The reception area was a charming mix of simple elegance and rustic charm. Tables were adorned with white linen and candles flickered softly, flickering a warm and inviting glow. The scent of freshly made food and desserts filled the air, blending perfectly with the faint sound of laughter and music.

Guests mingled, their conversations mingling with the soft melodies that played from a nearby record player. A makeshift dancefloor was set up, and couples swayed gently under the fairy lights that twinkled above them.

Rick and I moved through the crowd, exchanging hugs and thanks with everyone who had joined us on our special day. Glenn, now reunited with Maggie, was holding her hand tightly, their smiles radiant and full of joy. Daryl clapped Rick on the back, his usual gruff and shy demeanor softened by the occasion. Michonne and Carl, with Judith, nestled in his arms, beamed proudly at us.

As the reception progressed, everyone danced and chatted endlessly with each other. Everyone slowly settled down into their seats, their eyes resting on me and Rick as we sat at our own resigned table.

My hand was clasped with Rick's as I leaned against the chair I sat in, my free hand rubbing over my 29-week bump with a tired sigh yet content smile. The ex-sheriff kept his eyes on mine, the smile on his face never faltering.

As the evening continued, the atmosphere was filled with a sense of warmth and celebration. The soft light of candles and fairy lights created a magical ambiance, casting a gentle glow over the guests as they took their seats, food and drinks in hand. The clinking of glasses and the low murmur of conversations gradually faded, signaling the beginning of speeches.

Glenn was the first to rise, his brown eyes sparkling with pride and nervousness, a small cup of champagne in his hand. "Alright everyone," he began, his voice carrying a mix of humor, affection, and awkwardness. "As the first one up here, I guess it's my job to set the tone. So uhm, no pressure, right?"

He chuckled softly, glancing over at me and Rick with a playful yet gentle smile. "You know, I've known Rick for a long time– and I can remember the day I met him like it was yesterday. It was... well, it was a mess. He was wearing a sheriff's uniform, nearly losing a limb by shooting at a herd of walkers. And I remember seeing him and thinking, 'How stupid is this guy?'"

A wave of laughter escaped everyone, resulting in a cheeky smile growing on Glenn's face, his shoulders rising as the laughter helped his confidence. "Little did I know, Rick would become one of the best friends I'd ever have,"

Glenn's eyes softened as he looked at Rick. "I didn't think that I would be saving the dumbass sheriff from King's County– who climbed into a military tank– and I didn't think I'd be at his wedding either. But Rick became my friend, a leader, and a fighter, though he's also a bit of a pain in the neck. Yet through it all, he always had this ability to see the best in people. Then, Nola came into the picture."

He turned to me with a shy smile. "I remember meeting Nola– and Maggie for the first time. I'd uh, like to say it was smooth and charming, but honestly, I think I just stumbled over my words and tried not to look like a complete idiot. But Nola, you were kind and patient, and you instantly took us all in, considering us a friend without knowing us. The way you and Rick looked at each other– I knew something was meant to happen,"

Glenn took a sip from his champagne, the smile on his face growing more confident. "So, Rick and Nola, here's to you both. You've faced more than your share of challenges, but you've done it together. You've built a life that is truly something to be proud of,"

The Rhee man raised his glass, looking at the guests with a mixture of nerves and warmth. "To Rick and Nola– may your journey together be endless support, love, and a lot of unforgettable memories. Cheers!"

As Glenn finished his speech, the room erupted in applause, and Rick gave him a grateful smile. The grin on my face widened as Glenn chugged his drink, my hands clasped together tightly as I giggled.

"Thank you, Waterboy!" I called out, shooting him a cheesy smile along with a thumbs up and he settled back in the seat beside Maggie.

As the applause for Glenn's speech began to die down, Maggie stood up, her green eyes shimmering with emotion. She tucked a loose strand of her brown hair behind her ear and glanced around the area, taking in the faces of those she considered family. With a deep breath, she began to speak, her voice steady but full of emotion.

"Well, I suppose it's my turn now," Maggie began, her Southern drawl adding warmth to her words, "You know, it's not every day that you get to stand up at your best friend's wedding and talk about how much they mean to you. And I'm not sure I can do it justice, but I'm sure goin' to try,"

She glanced at me, her eyes filled with nostalgia as she smiled. "Nola, I've known you since I was a little girl–back when you were just a cool older neighbor who babysat me and sang silly songs. You were like the big sister I always wanted, showing me how to be strong, how to stand up for myself, and how to love fiercely. Even back then, you were my hero."

The guests smiled, some glancing between Maggie and me, clearly moved by the bond we shared. I felt my heart swell, memories of simpler times flooding back, and I squeezed Rick's hand a little tighter.

"And then," Maggie continued, her voice growing steadier. "When the world fell apart, you were still there for me. We lost so much, more than anyone should have to bear. But somehow, we found each other again, and we became more than neighbors or friends. We became family. You were the one who helped me find my strength when I thought I'd lost it all,"

Maggie's eyes glistened with unshed tears, but she brightly smiled through them, the warmth in her voice never wavering. "I remember when you and Rick first met on the farm. There was somethin' between you right from the start. I saw it in the way you looked at each other, even when you tried to hide it. I knew."

Her smile softened as she continued, her voice carrying a gentle certainty. "I knew you two were meant to be. It was just a matter of time before you both realized it, too. I watched as you both grew closer, leaning on each other through the hardest times, findin' strength in one another that neither of you thought you had left. The way you two love each other— it's rare, it's powerful, and it's something that's kept all of us goin'."

The Rhee woman paused, her eyes briefly flicking over to Rick, who was listening intently, his hand still holding mine, his thumb rubbing gentle circles on my skin.

"Rick," Maggie said, her tone affectionate, "I know I don't have to tell you this, but you've got yourself one hell of a woman. Nola's been through more than most, but she's still standin', still fightin'. She's strong because she has to be, but she's also strong 'cause she's got you by her side."

Maggie's green eyes then returned to me, her voice now filled with emotion. "Nola, my name twin," she said, resulting in a few chuckles from the audience as well as me. "You've had my back for as long as I can remember. You've held me up when I couldn't stand, you've given me help when I had none, and you've loved me like a sister—like family. And now, seein' you so happy, so full of life and love with Rick, it fills my heart with so much joy. You deserve every bit of this happiness, and I'm so, so glad you've found it."

Tears brimmed in my eyes, and I couldn't help but let them spill over, feeling the overwhelming warmth and truthfulness of Maggie's words. The love and support she offered felt like a comforting embrace.

Maggie then raised her glass—which was full of water— her voice steady and clear. "So, here's to Rick and Nola, two of the strongest, most loving, and carin' people I know. May your journey together be filled with more love than you can imagine, more laughter than you can count, and more strength than you will ever need. To family, to love, and to a future that's as bright as the moonlight shining on that lake tonight. Cheers!"

The room echoed with a chorus of 'Cheers!' as everyone raised their glasses high, toasting the love and future that Rick and I built together. Maggie's heartfelt words lingered in the air, a testament to the unbreakable bonds that held us all together.

As the applause and clinking of glasses filled the room, Maggie made her way over to me, one hand holding the small train of her dress and the other holding the glass of water. I stood to meet her, and she wrapped me in a tight hug, whispering softly in my ear, "I'm so proud of you, Nola,"

"I love you, Mags," I whispered back, holding her close. "Thank you so much."

We pulled away, both of us wiping away the tears that had escaped, and with a shared grin, Maggie returned to her seat beside Glenn, her hand slipping into his. The moment was perfect— filled with love, connection, and the promise of a brighter and more colorful future.

The chattering and clapping for Maggie's speech began to settle as Carl hesitantly stood up from his seat, every guest quieting down at the sight of the teenager. There was a brief moment of surprise among some of the older guests who hadn't expected him to speak, but Carl's determined expression showed he had something important to say.

He held 1-year-old Judith securely in one arm while his free hand nervously tugged at the edge of his formal shirt. He glanced around the crowd, then back to Rick and me, before finally speaking. His voice was a little shaky at first, but it quickly steadied as he found his confidence.

"Uh, I wasn't planning on saying anything tonight," Carl began, his gaze meeting ours. "But... After listening to Glenn and Maggie, I felt like I should say something too."

The teenager paused, taking a deep breath. "When I first met Nola, I didn't really know what to think. All of a sudden I get shot and she ends up saving my life. All I remember thinking was that she was like one of those heroes from the comic books I used to read. But as I got to know her, I realized she was even better than that. She's real, and she's been there for me— for all of us— in ways I can't describe,"

Carl's words hung in the air, and I felt my heart swell in affection and emotion. I leaned forward, my chin resting on my hand as I watched him with a small smile.

"Wh...when my mom died, I thought I was going to have to grow up without her. I was angry, and I felt lost. I went cold. But then you, Nola," Carl's eye met mine, and his voice softened. "You stepped in for not only Judith but for me too. You made sure we still had a family— a mother figure. You didn't try to replace her, but you helped fill that hole in my heart, and you made sure I wasn't alone,"

Hot tears streamed down my face at the emotion in Carl's face and voice, the smile on my lips faltering as my chapped lips wobbled. Rick pressed his body against mine, his lips gently kissing the top of my head.

"Judith might be too young to understand now, but one day she's going to know just how lucky she is to have you and Dad," the 14-year-old said, his voice steadying further. "You've given her a chance to grow up in a world where love and family matter, where people still care about each other— still look out for each other. And that's something really special, and it's something I'll never take for granted."

Carl took a deep breath, glancing at Rick and then back to me. "So, I just wanted to say thank you, Nola. For everything. For being there when we needed you, for loving my dad, and for being the mom Judith and I needed. Uhm, cheers?"

"Cheers!" Everyone repeated loudly, their glasses clinking together.

As the cheers and applause filled the air, Carl gave a small, sheepish smile, clearly relieved his speech was over. He shifted Judith in his arms and sat back down next to Enid, his face slightly flushed from the attention.

His blue eye then shifted to me, and as it did, I straightened my posture and widened my smile. I brought my hands to my lips and kissed them before waving them towards Carl, my hands forming into a heart.

"I love you, Mr. Invincible!" I cheered out emotionally, a small tear slipping down my cheek.

As the evening progressed and the night deepened, the joyous and lighthearted atmosphere continued to envelop the reception. More speeches were made, and more people laughed, talked, ate, and drank.

I took a small sip of my water, softly humming along to the country music that flowed out of the record player. Rick sat beside me, mindlessly chatting with Daryl and Glenn as they stood beside him.

But amidst the warmth and joy, a sudden painful tightness in my lower abdomen made me wince slightly. I squeezed my eyes shut at the sudden feeling, my left hand moving to my belly and the other gripping Rick's.

At first, I brushed it off as nothing more than nerves or excitement. But as the sensation repeated itself a few seconds later, I realized it was something else entirely. I shifted uncomfortably in my seat, rubbed my hand over my belly, and squeezed Rick's hand eagerly, hoping the feeling would pass.

Rick's sharp blue eyes, always attuned to me, noticed my subtle movements. "You okay?" he asked, his voice low and filled with concern.

I cleared my throat, wagging my head up and down quickly. "Uh, yeah, I'm fine."

Rick didn't look convinced, but he let it go, though his hand remained firmly clasped around mine, grounding me. The pains and discomfort were subtle at first, but they didn't seem to be going away. Each time they hit, they were a little stronger, a little more persistent. I took deep breaths, trying to calm myself as dark thoughts began to overflow my head.

Suddenly, my lower abdomen tightened again, resulting in me standing to my feet with a gasp. Rick's eyes snapped to mine, his blue eyes wide with concern.

He reached for my hand, his touch firm yet gentle. "Honey—"

"I— I need to go to the bathroom. I'll be right back," I spewed out anxiously, my teeth harshly biting my lower lip as I waddled from my seat.

Rick immediately went to stand up, his thick brows drawn together in concern as he watched me intently. I waved him off as I passed the table, my hand holding the underneath of my bump.

I made my way through the reception area, offering tight-lipped smiles and small finger waves toward everyone as I brushed past them. My stomach swirled in anxiety and nausea as I continued, the tight pains in my abdomen growing more uncomfortable.

The laughter, the music, and the chatter from the part seemed distant as I quickened my step, walking into the nearest bathroom. Shaky breaths escaped me as I slowly creaked the door open, my hands trembling in anxiety.

As soon as I clicked the door closed, my hands gripped the edge of the cool sink, my body leaning against it as I tried my hardest to steady my breathing. Once I closed my eyes, I was almost instantly taken back to months ago when we had first arrived in Alexandria.

It felt like I was back in the bathroom, hot and heavy tears relentlessly rolling down my flushed cheeks, my stomach twisting and spasming in discomfort, my chest aching as I struggled to catch my breath from the overwhelming anxiety that consumed me.

But everything in this situation was different, I wasn't 17 weeks pregnant– I was 29 weeks. This wasn't my baby making its first movements, this was something different, and I was afraid.

Today was my wedding day. Out of all days, something wrong had to be on my wedding day.

As I gripped the sink, my mind raced with a flood of emotions and memories. Today was supposed to be perfect, but instead, I was standing alone in a bathroom, trying to push down the panic that was bubbling up inside me.

I pushed myself from the sink, my hands waving cool air to my face as my whole body began to suddenly overheat, sharp tears pricking the corners of my eyes as my chest rumbled in emotion.

My body shook as I slowly shuffled toward the toilet, my hands holding up my white silk wedding dress as I hesitantly sat myself down on the closed lid. Small tears escaped my swollen eyes as I settled on the seat, my hands holding my pregnant bump as I tried my hardest to breathe through the sharp pains that took over.

As I sat there, trying to calm myself, I heard the bathroom door creak open again. My heart skipped a beat at the sound, hoping it wasn't someone who would panic at the sight of me sitting there in my wedding dress, clearly not okay. But then, I saw Michonne's familiar, reassuring figure stepping inside.

Her warm brown eyes softened with concern as she noticed me, softly closing the bathroom door behind her as she approached me. "Nola, what's going on?" she asked gently, crouching down in front of me so we were at eye level.

I let out a trembling breath, trying to force a smile through my thick tears. "We gotta stop findin' ourselves in this position," I joked weakly, though my voice broke as another sharp pain gripped me, causing me to hiss involuntarily.

Michonne's expression didn't change– she knew me too well. "Let me help you," she said softly, placing a hand on my knee as she examined me with her steady gaze.

"I...I don't know what's happenin'," I admitted, my voice barely above a whisper as I tried to breathe. "It feels like... like something's wrong, Michonne. I'm not tryin' to freak out, but–" My voice broke as tears began to flow freely, the fear I had been holding back finally crashing over me.

The woman's eyes widened slightly, the worry deepening in her gaze. She kept her voice calm and measured as she asked, "Nola, could you be in labor? Are you having contractions?"

The question struck me like a lightning bolt, my heart pounding in my chest as fear gripped me even tighter. "No," I whispered, shaking my head vigorously as more tears streamed down my cheeks. "No, it's too early, Michonne. I-I'm only 29 weeks... it's too early. I can't be in labor– it's too early–"

Michonne didn't flinch, her steady presence a beacon in my rising panic. She took my trembling hands in hers, her touch firm and reassuring as she gently shushed me. "Okay, okay. How about we go to the clinic and have Denise check you out, yeah? Okay?"

I nodded with a heavy breath, my eyes blinking closed as I inhaled and exhaled deeply. The idea that I could be in labor this early terrified me. I wasn't ready, the baby wasn't ready. The thought that something going wrong was unbearable.

Michonne carefully gripped my upper arm, helping me stand from my seated position. I winced and hissed as I stood, my hands rubbing my swollen belly. The woman whispered comforting words to me as she helped me cross the bathroom, my heels clicking against the cool tiles.

As we stepped out of the bathroom and into the cool night air, the sounds of the reception faded into the background, drowned by the pounding in my ears. The tightness in my abdomen returned, stronger this time, and I clutched Michonne's arm, gasping in pain.

"I've got you," Michonne murmured, her voice steady and grounding. "We're almost there."

"Rick needs to know," I gasped out.

The woman nodded in agreement, her brows furrowed with concern as she guided me to the clinic. "I'll send someone to get him," she assured me, her voice calm despite the urgency in her steps. Her dark eyes were squinted as she quickly scanned the area and spotted Rosita nearby, standing with Eugene. She called out to her, and she immediately rushed over, confusion yet worry etched on her face.

"Rosita, go find Rick and tell him to meet us at the clinic," Michonne instructed, her voice steady and firm. "Tell him... tell him it's urgent."

Rosita's warm amber eyes darted from Michonne to me, taking in my pale face and the way I clutched my belly. Without a word, she nodded her head and spun around, ignoring Eugene who followed right after her as she bolted through the crowd of people.

With Rosita on her way to get Rick, Michonne continued leading me to the clinic, her arm a steadying presence as I leaned onto her for support. The pain in my abdomen intensified with each step, each wave stronger than the last, making it harder to walk. My mind raced with fear and uncertainty, but the woman's calm demeanor kept me grounded.

Everything seemed to move quickly as we finally arrived at the clinic, Denise's blue eyes wide with concern as she greeted us at the door. I could hear Michonne's voice explain the circumstances, resulting in Denise leading the both of us to a private room that held the ultrasound.

"Lie down, Nola," Denise instructed gently, helping me into the bed. "I'm going to check your vitals and see what's going on."

I closed my eyes as I lay back on the bed, trying to breathe through the pain as Michonne stood beside me, her hand resting on my shoulder in silent support. The cool air of the clinic was a clear contrast to the warmth of the reception outside, but I barely noticed as Denise began her examination, her movements were quick and efficient.

After what felt like an eternity, the door of the room burst open, and Rick rushed in, her face pale with worry. His sparkly ocean-blue eyes locked onto mine, and he was at my side in an instant, his hand gripping mine tightly.

Rick's normally steady and stern expression was filled with panic as he bent down, his hand worriedly brushing the stray strands of hair out of my face as his eyes were intently on mine. Quick breaths left him as he leaned forward, pressing a firm yet delicate kiss on my forehead, his lips lingering.

"Are you okay?" his words were fast and frantic. He glanced over at Michonne, his eyes narrowing slightly as he immediately turned into protective mode, a sharp edge to his voice. "Why didn't you come get me?"

Michonne didn't even flinch at the tone of Rick's voice. Her calm, composed expression remained as she met his gaze. "Rick, I was focused on getting her to the clinic. I sent Rosita to find you."

The ex-sheriff opened his mouth to argue, but I quickly squeezed his hand, drawing his attention back to me. "Rick– sweetie– it's okay," I said tiredly, my voice shaky with discomfort but firm enough to cut through his rising frustration. "She did the right thing. I needed to get here."

He looked down at me, the anger in his eyes quickly fading away as he took in my tear-streaked face and the ultrasound probe pressed against my stomach as Denise looked at the black and white image. Rick's expression softened, his thumb brushing over my knuckles in a soothing motion. "I'm sorry," he murmured, his voice cracking slightly. "I just... I should've been here."

"You're here now," I whispered back, giving him a weak but reassuring smile. "That's what matters."

Rick nodded, visibly calming down as he entirely turned over to me. His free hand came up to gently caress my cheek, his soft twinkling eyes searching mine. "We're gonna get through this, okay? I'm right here. It's all gonna be alright, Honey."

He then spun his head to Denise, noticing the concentrated look on her face as she moved the probe on my lower stomach, her eyes locked on the screen in front of her. "What do you see? Is everythin' okay?" Rick asked, his voice thick with worry.

Denise's eyes didn't leave the screen as she spoke, her voice calm. "Nola, I believe you're experiencing Braxton Hicks contractions. They're basically practice contractions and are pretty common around this time in pregnancy, especially with all the excitement today. They're not the real thing, but they can be uncomfortable."

"Not the real thing? Oh shit," I mumbled playfully yet honestly.

I breathed out softly, relief washing over me as I processed her remaining words. It wasn't labor. The baby wasn't coming early. The baby was okay. But even with that relief, I couldn't help the tears that welled up in my eyes. The fear and anxiety had been so overwhelming, and the emotional toll of the day was catching up with me.

If I was only experiencing Braxton Hicks, I couldn't even imagine what real labor felt like.

Rick gently shushed me, his head pressing against mine as he pecked multiple kisses to my temple. He raised his head, meeting Denise's eyes. "So, the baby's okay?" he asked, his voice thick with emotion.

Denise nodded, offering the both of us a careful smile. "The baby is just fine. But I need you to take it easy, Nola. The stress and excitement might have triggered these contractions, so rest is crucial. So, as your doctor, I will keep monitoring you, but for now, bed rest is the best course of action."

I inhaled sharply, my body tensing as another small Braxton Hick contraction took over my body, my fists shaking as I clenched them tightly. I groaned and hissed at the feeling, one of my eyes winking open to look at Denise.

"You're lucky I don't fire you for puttin' me on bedrest on my weddin' day, Denise," I murmured tiredly, resulting in a few laughs escaping Denise, Rick, and Michonne.

Denise and Michonne lost themself in laughter as Rick turned to me, his hands cradling my face, his thumbs wiping away the stray tears on my flushed cheeks. He leaned in again, pressing a tender kiss to my forehead and then my cheeks, his breath warm and comforting.

•••

Hours had passed and the small wedding reception faded away as everyone soon went their own ways. Rick and I were the first to return home due to the panic we had over the baby, and everyone soon moved on to their homes as well.

Maggie and Glenn made sure to check up on me before they returned to their own home, their eyes were full of worry as they visited me at the house. After they left, Rick gently and kindly helped me out of my wedding dress, ran a warm bath for me, and put Judith to bed.

The warm glow of the candles flickered softly, casting a serene light across the bathroom. The sound of water gently splashing and the faint scent of lavender filled the air, casting a calming atmosphere that seemed worlds away from the earlier chaos of the night.

I was lounging in the bathtub, my sore and tense muscles relaxing and soothing in the warm water. The tension of the day began to wash away as I sunk into the bathtub, a sigh of contentment leaving me as I gently rubbed my stomach, the pains finally coming to an end.

As I closed my eyes, letting the warm water and bubbles envelop me, I heard a soft creak of the bathroom door opening. I looked up to see Rick entering the room, his expression soft and caring. He was carrying a small, folded towel and a fresh change of clothes, his eyes taking in the peaceful scene with a quiet look of awe.

"You all set?" he asked, his voice careful as he set the towel on the counter and approached the bathtub, his eyes locked on mine.

I looked up at Rick, a soft and tired smile touching my lips. The exhaustion of the day seemed to melt away from the warmth of the bath, and his presence only added to the sense of peace and safety that had settled over me. "Actually, I'd really love it if you joined me," I said, my voice carrying a hint of playfulness.

The ex-sherrif's eyebrows shot up in surprise, his blue eyes softening at the simple request, and a gentle yet shy smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "You sure? I don't wanna crowd you or anythin'," he replied thoroughly, already beginning to undo the buttons of his shirt.

I laughed softly, shaking my head as I kicked some water at him. "There's plenty of room, and I could use the company."

He nodded, moving with deliberate care as he removed his clothes and boots. And soon enough, he slid into the bathtub beside me. The water sloshed gently around us, and I could hear a content sigh leave Rick as he settled beside me.

The closeness of the warm water and his presence felt like a comforting cocoon as I breathed happily, a permanent smile engraved on my face. I leaned back against the cool tub, feeling the stress of the day dissipate as Rick slid his arm around my shoulders, pulling me gently against him.

We stayed in comfortable silence for a few moments, just enjoying the soothing feeling of the water warmly sizzling against our skin and the closeness between us. Rick's fingers traced soothing patterns on my naked back, his other hand completely resting on my abdomen.

Suddenly, I felt a familiar gentle fluttering along with a soft movement pressed against my abdomen, resulting in Rick moving his hand in surprise. I glanced over at him, his eyes wide with confusion yet shock. He moved his palm slightly, trying to gauge the sensation more clearly. His expression shifted from surprise to awe as he felt the baby kick again, pressing against his hand with a firm push.

"Is that...?" Rick began, his voice trailing off, unsure if he felt it correctly.

I nodded, a soft smile spreading across my face as I placed my hand over his. "Yes," I told him with a breathy chuckle. "You're feelin' the baby kick."

Rick shook his head in surprise, a toothy grin taking over his face as he looked down at me in pure affection and love. "Look at that. Our own little soldier" he sighed, lowering his head to peck multiple kisses on my moist skin.

With a surprised giggle, my wet hands reached up, gripping the back of his neck as he smothered me with hundreds of kisses. He adjusted his body over mine, his breath warm against my face as he held in his own laughter.

As Rick moved to pull away, I reached up, my hands forcing his head in place as I gazed into his eyes with a silly smile. "Kiss me, Richard Grimes," I repeated, another small giggle escaping me as Rick smiled.

"My pleasure, Magnolia Grimes," he replied smoothly before leaning in, his lips delicately folding over mine in a passionate kiss.
