PART 60

A tremor of fear ran through Nani. He was consumed by worry for Sky.  He had no choice but to accept Sky's father's cruel bargain; it was the only way to secure Sky's freedom.  The older man's words echoed in his mind:

"I know this woman likes you. If you agree to be with her for a year, I'll let Sky do what he wants. I'll let you love each other after that. If he still loves you, even when you're not by his side, I'll leave you both alone."

"Sorry, Sky," Nani whispered, his voice barely audible, "but I have to do this." He glanced at Prim, who was beaming, her hand linked possessively through his arm.

Upon arriving in the States, Nani began his charade, pretending to reciprocate Prim's affections. The pretense was agonizing, a constant ache in his chest, but he persevered, playing the role of a devoted boyfriend convincingly enough to avoid suspicion.

Prim, oblivious to his inner turmoil, chirped happily, adjusting her red dress. "You know, it's actually quite fun being your girlfriend," she said, her smile bright and genuine.  They were on a date, a forced date in a forced relationship.

Nani managed a strained smile in return. "Let's go," he said, his voice flat.

He drove to a renowned restaurant, the expensive eatery a stark contrast to the turmoil raging within him. The forced gaiety of the evening felt like a lead weight on his soul.
