"Bubo and Ines"
"Okay, out of topic, but I have a question," Enrique said to Estella, the two of them still walking together. The girl looked at him with raised brows, giving a short hum as a way of telling him to ask away.
"Do you like potatoes?" He asked, bashfully chuckling a little, infecting her a bit with his shy laughter.
"Yeah, sure. I like 'em," She replied, asking, "Why do you ask?"
"Well, you see," He started, offering his hand as they walk through a rocky path, helping her and making sure she doesn't slip or lose her balance somehow, especially since she can be a little clumsy sometimes. "I live with my uncle and my cousin along with his wife. They just got married about a few months ago, and she has a thing for potatoes."
"Oh, well, I'm fine with potatoes. I mean, what could go wrong, right?" Estella answered, the two of them finally meeting the end of the troublesome rocky path they were taking just a moment earlier.
"Good, 'cuz we're almost there," The boy tells her, making her get excited. "Really? We are?" She grinned, giddy and hopeful, like a child. Her eyes shone brightly.
"How long have we even been walking for? I can't believe we're already almost there!" She happily said, skipping as she follows the boy.
Enrique simply laughed at the girl, finding her childish actions a little cute. Shaking his head, he could picture Camilo's sour face as he imagines him hearing how he thought Estella looked cute just a moment ago.
After a few hops and skips and they finally find themselves getting surrounded by multiple buildings and houses, a crowd of people walking in different directions on the streets with vehicles Estella wasn't familiar with.
Her jaw dropped as she follows Enrique, making their way around toward his home.
"You might want to watch where you're going if you don't plan on getting run over," He told her, expecting her to react like how she normally does when she gets teased, but she ends up giggling at him instead.
"This is so cool," He heard her mumble her eyes starting to wander off again. He grabs her gently on the elbow and guides her to make sure she doesn't accidentally walk in front of a motocicleta (motorcycle) or a tram (¿or is it a trolleybus?).
However, the two of them still ended up getting separated when she ran up to a little shop window showcasing different knickknacks, her eyes spotting something very interesting.
"Estella!" She heard Enrique groan in frustration faintly in the distance. Estella turned, trying to focus on not getting distracted anymore. "Sorry," She mouthed to him before jogging back to his side, bumping into a stranger in doing so.
"Oof!" The two of them grunted, their shoulders crashing hard with each other.
"Oh," Estella gasped, "I'm so sorry," She tried saying apologetically, except that the words ended up going out of her mouth as she kept giggling, feeling high from the excitement.
She only had a vague glimpse of the stranger's face before rushing back to Enrique and containing her giddiness. He seemed like he was her age, he had dark skin, curly charcoal hair, and hazel eyes. Estella was pretty sure he also had a beauty mark right above his left eyebrow too.
She was a little embarrassed by how she ended up having a laughing breaking down whilst trying to apologize for bumping into him; She worries that the stranger thinks she wasn't being sincere.
"I'm home!" Enrique yelled, opening the door to his house and making sure he was still holding it open for the girl.
"Took you long enough, you–" Estella heard a male's voice say, getting louder with each syllable along with the floorboard's creaking. The man got surprised as soon as his eyes landed on Estella, letting out a girly shriek that catches the attention of everyone.
Including the man's wife who was busy cooking their dinner in the kitchen.
"Why? What's wrong?" They heard the woman ask, rushing towards them like lighting, and before they could even speak a word, she was already there.
The woman was gorgeous – as pretty as Isabela Madrigal herself. She had wavy, dark, silky hair, chocolate brown eyes, and slightly brown skin. She was wearing a pretty pink dress under her apron with cute little flower-designed embroidered in the middle, near the waistline.
Her husband on the other hand was simply wearing a plain, white shirt, neatly buttoned and tucked comfortably in his pants. He was definitely shorter than his wife. He also had black, circular glasses, dark hair, a bit of facial hair growing on his face, and he was pretty skinny.
"H-Hola," Estella managed to say, giving a small hesitant wave as she smiled sheepishly at the too surprised faces.
"A guest!" The woman smiled, wiping her hands on the towel hanging on her apron. "Come in, come in. Enrique doesn't bring a lot of friends over," She laughed, welcoming Estella which makes her surprised.
Things didn't go out the way she expected them to. Which is actually pretty great since she was overthinking stuff like how she usually does.
"Let alone a girl," The woman added, her hands comfortably placed on the girl's shoulders already.
"Alright, Ines. Everybody knows I'm friendless," Enrique sighed, smiling at the woman, Ines. "Is Tio here?" He asked his cousin who finally managed to read the scene. In the wrong way though.
"No, he uhm," His cousin stuttered, fixing his glasses. "Went on a trip the other day," He finished.
"Would you mind a little introduction though?" Enrique's cousin laughed, dusting himself as a habit when he was nervous about something.
"Right, well, Estella, this is my cousin Bubo," Enrique said, gesturing to the man in front of them who waves awkwardly at her. "And this is his wife, Ines." He added, gesturing for the pretty woman right next to her who said "hi" while raising and waving both of her hands excitedly.
"Bubo, Ines," Enrique said, catching the couple's attention. "This is Estella and she will be staying with us for a few nights."
"I-I can stay anywhere you want," Estella blurted out, not wanting to be a sudden burden all because she didn't think things through before running off the first chance she gets.
"Like uhm, that chair." She nervously said, pointing at the sofa in the living room.
"Goodness, no." Ines exclaimed, "Don't worry your pretty little head, we have a guest room for you to stay in."
My pretty little what?
"Ah, well," She tried saying, turning back into the shy and socially awkward girl she is. "I don't want to be a burd–"
"Hey, Bubo, I think we should go talk over here about something," Enrique said loudly, dragging his cousin to the side and cutting Estella off, knowing what she'll say next.
He wouldn't have brought her there if he knew his family didn't adore guests. And since he rarely brings any, they were feeling quite happy to see how their little Enrique actually had some really close friends.
"We should have your room tidied," Ines started saying, "You can go put that heavy bag you're carrying upstairs, dear. The guest room is the second door to your left as soon as you climb up."
"Oh, and do you like potatoes?" Ines questioned, making Estella remember how Enrique asked her that same question earlier. "Uh, yes." Estella managed to answer back.
"Charming! Since I may or may not have put in a ton of potatoes in the Ajiaco," Ines finished.
Remembering how she was supposed to be preparing dinner, she bolts back into the kitchen and lets Estella settle in the guest room.
The room was already pretty tidy, the bed was big too. It had a window that overlooks the lively streets outside which Estella opened and popped her head out to watch the people who were still continuously walking along and doing what they want even as the sun slowly started to set.
"Pst."
Estella turned her head to the side, seeing her buddy, Enrique. She laughed as she saw him make a face at her from the other window.
"Want me to give you a tour?" He asked her, tilting his head to point out the streets, making the girl's eyes brighten. "Would I?" She said excitedly, dashing out of the guest room, causing Enrique to let out a laugh, getting a bit excited himself.
As if they were like little children, the two run out of the house giggling to each other excitedly, saying that they'll be back for dinner.
Enrique showed Estella the different places in town like the fountain, the big tree, the marketplace, the shops he likes to go to, and even the house where his crush lives.
Technically, the woman lived above their family's bookstore with her parents.
"Where is she?" Estella nudges, asking for Enrique to show her the girl he likes, the two of them sitting on the small steps in front of his house, eating some Obleas.
The boy scoffed and shook his head sadly, making her wonder and ask why he did so. "You'll just laugh," He said bashfully.
"Nonsense! Why would I?" Estella exclaimed, hitting him lightly on the shoulder.
"Because I'm in love with a woman who's eleven years older and totally way out of my league?" Enrique laughed, looking at someone in the distance. Estella followed his romantic gaze, her eyes falling on a woman with short, copper hair and a white complexion; she was busy arranging books on a shelf.
"She's drop-dead gorgeous," Estella muttered under her breath, her jaw dropping as she questioned her sexuali– I mean, herself.
"Right?" Enrique asked enthusiastically before letting out a sigh and a frown. "Too bad she's already engaged."
Estella winces at the words her friend spoke out, sensing a bit of the pain and disappointment he was feeling as he mentioned it.
"Hey," She softly said, patting his back, "You'll find love again someday."
Enrique smiled at her and shoved her face away, chuckling. "I know, there's still plenty of fish in the sea anyway." He tried saying this in an attempt to cover up his sadness.
"It's getting pretty late you two," They heard Ines say along with the twinkling sounds of their door chime as she opened it to call for them.
"Si, Si. We were just about to head inside," The boy told her. The woman nodded with a heartwarming smile that meant she understood and headed back inside with her husband.
★ ★ ★
Estella kept her window open, her head laying on her arms as she leaned to watch the people outside slowly decrease.
Knock knock knock
Wondering who it could be, Estella walked toward the door and opens it only to find that it was Enrique once again.
"What?" She laughed questioningly at his slightly smirking face – mostly a sign that he was planning something.
"I wanna show you something."
"Careful," Enrique said, helping Estella up as they reached his house's roof.
"Woah," She breathed out, "This is a hundred times better than MY rooftop spot."
The boy laughed, "You have one too?" He asked, getting surprised by how they had another one to add to the list of things they have in common.
"Yeah!" She exclaimed, thinking the same thing he was. "I kind of feel a bit guilty now that you've shown me yours but I haven't shown you mine."
"Then again, it is kind of a difficult place to lounge on," Estella added, smiling sheepishly since the roof of her house was triangular and not to mention that she gets quite a bit of attention trying to climb up too. Especially because her room, along with her balcony is located in front of their house.
"I noticed how you kept on looking out the window," Enrique told her, the two of them sitting somewhere near the edge, making their feet be able to dangle. "It's not the best view, but it's a better one than from the guest's room."
"This place," She said, a wide smile on her face, "is amazing." Enrique scoffed at her compliment to his town, he's seen a lot of new people and tourists come by before but never one that had the same look in her eyes.
It was as if she was able to come to a certain page from the book she'd always adored, happy to live a life she dreamed of, to see a sight she always wanted to see. Become the person she wanted and could be.
The thought of having to only stay for a short time made Estella's smile slowly die. Remembering her town, her parents, her family, her friends – she already had a life there.
It would be unfair if she left all that someday just for this.
Enrique noticed how her expression changed; how her eyes started to lose their shine, and how her smile started to fade. He patted her shoulder for comfort and left her to let her recollect herself and think about a few things.
After Enrique left quietly, Estella was thankful for the peacefulness she felt as she was left alone to think.
She held her head down and released a heavy breath, thinking of how worried her parents must be.
★ Yeah, no shit, girl. Ya just left without saying anything, of course, they'll be worried as fu– ★
And although she had never been to this place before, she felt like it was familiar all of a sudden. As if she saw all this beforehand.
Or maybe someone else did.
