Before she was a Seer or a secret, she was the Underfoot, a girl who moved through Number Four, Privet Drive, like a draft of cold air, leaving phantom goosebumps on her aunt's skin. She was the shadow that followed the boy meant for the lightning, unaware that her own skin was already starting to feel like shimmering scales beneath the bathwater.

Even in the cupboard under the stairs, she and Harry were two halves of a shattered mirror, reflecting a world that refused to look them in the eye. He was the spark, the boy meant to set the world on fire, but Valerie was the anchor—the silent, salt-stained girl who worshiped him in the unfiltered way twins do.
