19 || REVELATION

18:59, 30 July 2023

The bunker was quiet. Too quiet. It had only been three days since Vanessa had ended up in Purgatory and already the boys were noticing her absence.

From the lack of her whispering to herself in Gaelic, or the music she liked to listen to when she was in her whiteboard mode. Or even just the general Irish insults she fired towards the boys daily. The silence felt eerie and for once they found themselves missing said insults.

Only the silence, and lack of insults, didn't last very long once the boys found the courage to pray for Balthazar and tell him exactly where his unofficial daughter had ended up.

"I'm sorry, I must have something in my ears..." Balthazar began, making the boys share a rather guilty look. "Did you say you morons let her end up in Purgatory?"

"Okay listen here, ass clown." Dean replied, already annoyed at being in the presence on an angel that wasn't Castiel. "We didn't let her end up in Purgatory, there wasn't anything we could do... If we should be blaming anyone here it's Crowley okay, he's the one who just let her stand there instead of zapping her away.

"Yes and I'll be giving him a talking to as well." Balthazar muttered, his hands on his hips as he let out a sigh. "You know, you boys really can't do anything right can you? Always relying on others to clean up your messes. Honestly, I'm surprised Vanessa stuck around this long."

"Oh, you know what-"

"Guys!" Sam yelled out, already sick and tired of hearing the two of them arguing. He was worried about Vanessa enough as it is, he didn't need anymore stress added on top of that when he knew for a fact he'd have to hold Dean back when Balthazar pushed him over the edge, the edge he was already very close to.

"Enough fighting." Sam sighed, running a hand through his hair before he spoke again. "No amount of arguing will bring Ness back, so for once in your life can you both please just shut up."

Both Dean and Balthazar silenced, biting the inside of their cheeks as they just stared down at the ground. Dean did what he was told, not wanting to add to the unimaginable stress Sam was probably feeling. Balthazar on the other hand couldn't give a damn what Sam was feeling and the only reason he stopped and behaved himself was because he knew Vanessa would want him too. That and, the boys probably needed him to help try and get her back so it was for the best that he behaved incase Dean knifed him.

"Balthazar, did Ness say anything to you about Purgatory? Anything she may not have told us?" Sam asked towards the angel as he leaned back on the desk, his eyes looking past Balthazar and instead finding the little drawings Vanessa had done on her whiteboard.

"Not that I can recall." Balthazar sighed out, taking a seat at the table and making himself at home by putting his feet up on it. "She told me an awful lot about your unfortunate lives that it all just sort of merges into one big flannel coloured mess."

"Didn't she leave a note? An 'incase of Purgatory' binder or something? Anything?" Dean exclaimed, shifting through the mass of pages littering one of the library desks, all of which covered in Vanessa's scrawly handwriting. "Oh, wait, here we go."

"What is it?" Sam asked hopeful, pushing himself off the desk as Dean picked up a piece of paper, one that looked as though it had been folded and unfolded a bunch of times.

"If you're reading this then it's most likely that I ended up in Purgatory..." Dean began, his face dropping ever so slightly before he looked up at Sam. "Wait a second, she knew she was gonna end up there?"

"Who knows." Sam sighed out, shaking his head. "Keep reading."

"If that's the case, then don't freak out... Dean, I'm talking to you." Dean said unamused, mumbling something about how he never freaks out before he kept reading. "Anyway, just wanted to let you both know that the odds are that I'll be okay... There are two ways out of Purgatory that I know of, one that leads to some forest in the arse end of nowhere and the other that leads directly into Hell.

"I don't know which one I'll get out of but I will get out. So in the meantime just relax and don't worry, I can handle myself. See you both soon... Dean stay out of my snacks. And Sam, don't let Dean eat my snacks... Love Vanessa."

"What that's it? Nothing about how to help her? Nothing about how to open a door? How to get her out?" Sam asked, feeling a little annoyed over the lack of anything in her letter but at the same time he wasn't surprised, that's just how she was.

"That's it..." Dean replied, turning the letter over in his hands to check the back. "Wait, here's something else... p.s. Dean, don't let Sam drive the Impala... p.p.s. Dean, if you do let Sam drive then look out for dogs... If he hits one, take it to the vets and just leave it there."

"Wait what?" Sam asked confused, ignoring the way Balthazar was chuckling to himself.

"Dude who even knows what Ness is talking about half the time." Dean sighed, shaking his head before he continued. "P.p.p.s. If I return home with a vampire please don't kill him... His name is Benny and he's cool. Oh and one last thing, if something happens and I don't return at all, I thought you should know that there is currently a wood nymph, the wicked witch and Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz trapped inside the bunker somewhere.

"See you soon (hopefully) and Dean I mean it, stay out of my snacks. Smiley face... Is her snacks all she cares about?" Dean scoffed out, tossing the letter back onto the table. "And I'm sorry but a wood nymph, whatever the hell that is, the wicked witch and Dorothy? She didn't think it was important to mention that, I don't know, when we moved in?!"

"You've seen this place, Dean." Sam sighed, taking the letter from the desk and glancing down at it, smiling a little over the little drawings Vanessa added, something she really liked to do when she was writing. "Chances are she doesn't know where they are, we haven't exactly mapped the place out yet."

"Well a little forewarning would have been nice." Dean sulked, slumping down into a seat at the table facing Balthazar, who was using a knife to pick under his nails and didn't seem at all fazed by the contents of the letter. "Also, what the hell did she mean when she said 'if I come home with a vampire'? It's freaking Purgatory, not an animal shelter."

"She's talking about Benny." Balthazar said blankly, earning the attention of the boys. "In the version of events where you..." He pointed towards Dean with the knife. "...end up there, you befriended a vampire called Benny. And in exchange for a way out of that godforsaken place, you freed him."

"Free a vampire? Are you kidding me?" Dean scoffed out, glancing over at Sam who was just staring down at the page with Vanessa's note written on it. "I would never befriend a vampire... Use him, maybe, but I'd never actually free him."

"Hate to break it to you, but you do... Or rather you did and from what I hear of it, you two had a wonderful time together in Purgatory." Balthazar said with a grin that had a whole other meaning to his words before he stood up. "Now, I'm going to go and do your job for you and ask around about Hell's supposed entrance into Purgatory. Cheerio." And with that he was gone, the knife he'd been holding clattering to the ground.

"Douchebag." Dean mumbled before he turned to Sam, who seemed to have gone a little pale. "Sammy, you okay?"

"What if she's hurt, Dean. Or worse, what if she's..." Sam breathed out, stopping himself from finishing the rest of that sentence. "I can't lose anyone else Dean. I can't go through this again."

"Hey, she'll be okay." Dean said assuringly as he got to his feet. "She's, and I can't believe I'm saying this, but she's got Crowley with her, he'll protect her. And besides, you know what Ness is like, she's probably got half of Purgatory fighting over being her friend."

"Yeah." Sam let out a soft chuckle, picturing the image of Vanessa and an army of monsters behind her. "Yeah, you're probably right. Crowley'll look after her... She'll make it out." He nodded his head a little, more so trying to assure himself that what he said was true rather than make Dean think he believed it.

Before either of them could speak again, Dean's phone rang. Bobby's name lit up the screen and he quickly picked up, putting it on speaker so Sam could hear.

"Hey, Bobby." Dean said, crossing his arms after setting the phone on the table.

"Hey, any news on Vanessa?" Bobby asked, the background noise indicating that he was driving, and that it was raining.

"No nothing yet." Dean sighed out, hearing both Bobby and Rufus, who must have been with him, also let out a quiet sigh. "Balthazar's asking around about some portal in Hell, one that can supposedly get you into Purgatory but otherwise we got jack. What about you? What are you up to?"

"Rufus and I just picked up those cursed objects Vanessa was going on about, you know the ones from the pawn shop where the Leviathan real estate lady was supposed to take over or whatever... Anyway, we're heading back your way, shouldn't be more than a day or so drive away."

"Alright well, hopefully by the time you get here we'll have something." Dean replied sceptically, unless Balthazar found something about the portal then he very much doubted they'd have anything. "What about the other Leviathans, what do you think happened to them after Dick exploded?"

"That's a vivid way of putting it." Bobby mumbled, clearing his throat before he spoke again. "Seems to be all quiet on that front, whether they exploded themselves or just became powerless, I ain't sure. Garth called, said the big mouths at the hospital just vanished. Got him working that psychic case Vanessa told us about now, seemed like it was going well last I checked in."

"Well that's something at least." Dean exhaled. "If you hear anything else, let us know."

"Yeah, you got it." Bobby replied before he hung up, leaving an eerie silence to fill the bunker once again. That is until it was broke by the whooshing of wings.

"Sam. Dean." Castiel's deep voice greeted, his appearance having both boys perk up a little. "Vanessa?"

Sam shook his head, hearing Castiel sigh a little as he stepped forward, leaning his hands against the back of the chair.

When Vanessa vanished, Castiel had finally managed to track down the Leviathan tablet, after days of flying around Iran looking for anyone that wasn't human. It had been a difficult task but it was one he'd completed, although now they didn't have much use for said tablet since Dick Roman was dead, but they figured it was for the best that it remain in the bunker where it would be safe.

Since then, Castiel had been in Heaven, asking the other angels what they knew about Purgatory in hopes of finding a way to get Vanessa out. But it had been a useless venture as none of the angels he'd managed to ask knew anything, so now he was back to square one.

"Balthazar's working a lead, but otherwise we got nothing." Sam told the angel as they all took a seat around the table that wasn't covered in pages. "What about the angels?"

"They didn't know anything." Castiel replied, clasping his hands together on the table in front of him. "Seems like those in Heaven don't really care about what happens to monsters after they die."

"Speaking of Heaven..." Dean began, earning both men's attention. "...where is God in all of this? I mean, he made Ness is a prophet, surely that should mean something to him."

"You heard what Ness said, Dean." Sam replied. "God doesn't like get involved."

"Yeah, he just sits back and allows his creations to fall apart around him." Dean muttered around a scoff. "Least he could do is get his holy ass down here and get Vanessa out of Purgatory."

"You always did have a way with words, Dean." A strangely familiar voice replied, making the three of them furrow their brows a little (and yes Castiel did the head tilt, Vanessa would be sad that she missed it... And she'd also hate having missed what was about to happen). "Guess it's why the fans love you so much."

"Chuck?" Sam said in shock, wondering if he was hallucinating although it seemed unlikely given that Dean and Castiel were also staring in the direction of the former prophet and writer.

"Wait a second, Ness told us you died... How are you here? And if you're here then how is she a prophet?" Dean asked, confused as to how Chuck was here and also how he'd managed to get in a) without a key and b) without them hearing him.

"Because I made her one." Chuck said casually, stepping up into the library with his hands clasped in front of him.

"You made her one?" Sam repeated, sharing a confused look with Dean. "Prophets can do that?"

"Prophets can't. But I can." Chuck replied with a grin, watching as only Castiel's eyes seemed to widen as he'd realised who exactly Chuck was.

"You're Him." Castiel said, standing up from his seat with his eyes wider than anyone had ever seen them before.

"Him? Him who?" Sam questioned, and it was right in that second that it hit him too. "Holy crap."

"What?" Dean asked, feeling a little left out as he hadn't quite realised it yet. "What are you two freaking out about? It's just Chuck."

"It's not just Chuck, Dean... It's- He's... God." Sam breathed out, watching the realisation crash down on Dean like a ton of bricks. Only Dean didn't seem as excited(?) over that news as he and Castiel did.

"Sorry. You're gonna have to, uh, give us a moment to start to process this, I guess. We thought you were dead. We didn't even know you were around. I mean, we knew about Chuck, but we just didn't know about... Chuck. I mean, I-I was hoping you were around. I prayed and I- but I don't know if they got, uh, lost in the spam or if-"

"Sam." Dean interrupted.

"Yeah?"

"Babbling."

"Right, sorry." Sam said quietly, clearing his throat and stepping back a little as he had no idea he'd even stepped forward.

"You're God? Chuck Shurley? The writer?" Dean said sceptically towards Chuck, making him sigh a little as his arms fell to his side. "Well, I gotta say... I'm a little underwhelmed, I pictured more of a..." Dean moved his hands around in front of him, trying to think of exactly what he'd expected God to look like.

"Long white beard? Robes?" Chuck suggested, making Dean nod his head a little as if to say 'yeah I guess'. "Yeah, that's not really my style."

"And pretending to be a writer is?" Dean replied, earning another sigh from Chuck who was beginning to see why the boys got along with Vanessa so well.

"I wasn't pretending, Dean. I am a writer. I created all this didn't I?" Chuck gestured around him, not just a the room he was in but at the people, objects and knowledge within.

"Yeah, until you disappeared and abandoned it." Dean mumbled to himself, before he raised his voice so Chuck could here him. "Where the hell have you been, Chuck? I mean, there's so much crap that has gone down on the Earth for thousands of years. Plagues and wars, slaughters. And you were, I don't know, writing books, going to fan conventions. Were you even aware, o-or did you just tune it out?"

"I was aware, Dean." Chuck said softly, fully understanding that Dean had every right to be mad at him given the life he's led... The life he made him lead before Vanessa came into it all.

"But you did nothing. And, I-I'm not trying to piss you off. You know, I don't want to turn into a pillar of salt." Dean chuckled out nervously.

"I actually didn't do that, but go on."

"People pray to you. People build churches for you. They fight wars in your name, and you did nothing."

"You're frustrated. I get it. Believe me, I was hands-on. Real hands-on for, wow, ages." Chuck exhaled, bringing his hands back in front of his as he clasped the together. "I was so sure if I kept stepping in, teaching, punishing, that these beautiful creatures that I created... would grow up. But it only stayed the same. And I saw that I needed to step away and let my baby find its way. Being overinvolved is no longer parenting. It's enabling."

"But it didn't get better." Dean replied a little angrily.

"Well, I've been mulling it over. And from where I sit, I think it has." Chuck said with a tilt of his head, however those in the room didn't seem to agree with him on that.

"You think the world has gotten better?" Castiel spoke up, stepping forward to join the conversation although he didn't seem too pleased about it. "What about the world is better? The starving? The wars? The diseases?"

"I get where you're coming from, Castiel, I do. But I can't be there for everything." Chuck replied, making Dean and surprisingly Sam scoff a little.

"But you weren't there for anything." Castiel said angrily. "Not for the world, not for humans. And certainly not for angels. Do you know how many angels have died over the years? At the hands of Lilith, or Lucifer? Raphael? How much blood has to be spilt before you decide to step in? How many angels have to die before you think enough is enough?"

"Okay, easy there Cas." Dean breathed out, stepping in front of the rather angry sounding, and looking, angel, whose fists where clenched tightly by his sides.

"For your information, I did step in. When I allowed Vanessa to stay in this world. When I turned her into a prophet. When I killed Eve, allowing you lot to focus on more important things, like Raphael for example." Chuck pointed out, as if that made any difference to the boys.

"And that's the problem Chuck. We shouldn't have had to focus on Raphael." Sam replied, starting to feel less starstruck so to speak, and more angry like the others. "He was your son, your responsibility. Not ours and certainly not Vanessa's."

"Do you even know where she is right now?" Dean exclaimed, still standing in front of Castiel incase the angel decided to try and attack God himself.

"I do." Chuck nodded, yet again hearing more scoffs coming from the boys. "But I can't help her. This is something she needs to do for herself."

"Then why are you here, Chuck? Why show yourself to us when you went to all that trouble throwing yourself into witness protection? I mean, even your own angels didn't know it was you." Sam said, now feeling more annoyed if anything.

"I just wanted to check in, see how you were doing after what happened." Chuck replied, moving further into the library as he admired Vanessa's whiteboards. "I gotta hand to Vanessa, she handled those Leviathans much quicker than I ever would have thought. And she saved Bobby in the process... She must be happy."

"Yeah well we wouldn't know about that given that she's in freaking Purgatory!" Dean's raised voice filled the room, however it didn't faze Chuck one bit as he continued reading over the mass of information Vanessa had written out.

"Oh, that was a good one." Chuck chuckled a little, pointing towards a section of Vanessa's whiteboard that mainly consisted of the word redacted. "And that one... My she remembered a lot didn't she? Big fan."

"Chuck, please..." Sam practically begged, the underlining sadness of his voice making Chuck glance back at him. "Please. Just bring her home."

"Im sorry Sam, I've interfered too much already." Chuck replied, sounding a little disappointed but sticking to his word. And with that, he vanished, leaving the boys in even more of a bad mood than before he showed up.

"Man, what a dick." Dean scoffed out, shaking his head as he sat down. Part of him couldn't believe what had just happened but the other part did, as it made sense that God would be a dick given how much suffering he'd allowed to world to go through.

"Oh dear, who died and left you three looking so glum?" Balthazar's far too cheery voice for the boys liking filled the room as he appeared, the flutter of wings blowing some papers off the desk.

"Long story." Sam replied, not feeling too eager to repeat what had just happened, nor did he think Balthazar would actually believe him. But he figured Castiel would tell him all about it later and besides, he was too busy worrying about Vanessa to care about telling the angel about his so called father.

"It always is, isn't it." Balthazar sighed out, glancing towards Castiel who just seemed like he'd completely spaced out and wasn't even aware of his friends appearance. Balthazar just shook his head, not even wanting to go near what could possibly be wrong with Castiel this time. "Anyway, I have good news-"

"You found the portal?" Sam interrupted a little too excitedly for Balthazar's liking, but who could blame him.

"Indeed I did." Balthazar nodded. "I asked around, a few of my angels, some of Crowley's demons and they all seemed to agree on the existence of such portal. However, it's exact location they aren't sure about."

"So we go to Hell and we find it? How hard can finding a magic portal into a monster wasteland be?" Sam huffed out, a small chuckle following behind as he felt the hope build inside him. The hope that he'd see Vanessa again soon. Before it was too late.

"You want to search Hell?" Balthazar asked, a little surprised at that given what happened the last time they went to Hell.

"If it means we can get Ness back, then yeah." Sam breathed out, Dean nodding his head in agreement.

"Well alright then." Balthazar replied, straightening his jacket a little. "Let's go get our girl back shall we?"

-ngl i had no plans to include chuck in this chapter or have him reveal himself to the boys but i was stuck for what to include and i just went with it so i hope y'all liked this chapter!

also let me know if you'd like to see vanessa work any specific cases from mid season seven to just before abaddon arrives... i figured cases would be a good way to keep this story going a bit longer as it's nearing the end and i'm not quite ready to say goodbye to vanessa and her many dads just yet! and i figured it would be pretty easy to have Vanessa forget details about certain cases, that way they wouldn't get solved too quickly!

there's not much left to go in terms of storyline, mainly the rescue of gabriel and dealing with abaddon, which i haven't quite figured out yet but it's fine, hopefully with some cases between those i'll have time to think that through!

but yeah, let me know if there's anything in particular you'd like to see vanessa help with and i can see what i can do! :)

okay bye! don't forget to leave a vote and maybe a comment if you like this chapter!
