05 || FIRST CASE
18:55, 30 July 2023It was just her first case, it was really no big deal but Vanessa was nervous. Really nervous. Despite knowing pretty much everything that happened in this episode she was worried that she wouldn't be able to save Rufus, wouldn't be able to stop the Kahn Worm from getting into Bobby and killing his literal best friend.
It was a big weight to carry on her shoulders but she'd do her best to make sure he survived. Especially since Sam, Dean and Bobby himself knew what would happen if they weren't careful, it made it a little easier for her.
Dean was reluctant to let Vanessa go with them but when she ended up on the verge of an Irish rant he gave up and agreed, not wanting to face the wrath of her angry. Plus she knew better than all of them what was about to happen so it would probably be for the best.
So now Dean was making Vanessa her very own FBI badge, much to her excitement. He even let her pick her own fake last name which he couldn't help but think was related to something he had no clue about.
"One FBI badge, Agent Taggart? Whoever the hell that is." Dean mumbled as he tossed Vanessa her badge.
Vanessa caught it excitedly and opened it, her fake name written in block capitals next to a photo of her that she'd made Dean take multiple times until she was happy with it.
"This is so exciting." Vanessa almost squealed giddily, making Sam smile to himself over her excitement, which was incredibly cute.
The two of them had gone out earlier that week, getting her some suits and whatnot to wear on cases. Vanessa hadn't been thrilled with the idea but she eventually ended up picking out some dark green ones, that matched her eyes perfectly and made her look like the embodiment of Ireland. (She was going for that).
"Can't we just call Rufus, tell him to keep his stubborn ass at home?" Bobby asked as he walked into the living room, his own duffel bag over his shoulder. "I ain't liking the sound of this worm thingy or whatever."
"You really want to try and tell him that?" Dean's raised eyebrow pointed in Bobby's direction.
"Ah you're right, ain't no way he'll stand down." Bobby muttered, setting his bag on the desk. "That your new ID?" He smiled over at Vanessa, the excitement practically radiating off her body, clouding the nerves in the pit of her stomach.
"Agent Taggart, pleased to meet you." Vanessa's accent turned Scottish for some reason but none of them said anything, instead they just exchanged amused looks.
"You kids ready to go?" Bobby asked, eyes scanning the room and retrieving three nods of agreement. "Let's hit the road."
-
The case went exactly as Vanessa remembered. They interviewed the first victim of the Khan Worm, the guy who bashed in his families heads. Saw the footage of Eve, the guys finally putting a face to the name, well not an actual face as she looked similar to a wraith in the footage but still it gave them some idea of what she looked like.
Then the second victim went postal at some packing warehouse, where they'd all end up later, which is where Bobby met up with Rufus. The two of them then headed to the morgue to check the body for the "weird grey goo" as Vanessa had called it, and they found exactly that, in the guys ear. Right where she said it'd be.
Which led to now, the five of them outside the warehouse about to go in.
"Are ye sure I can't convince ye to stay outside?" Vanessa was nearly running to catch up with Rufus as they headed inside.
"Hell no, I ain't about to walk out on a case. Death or no death." Rufus grumbled and Vanessa sighed, he appreciated her trying to save his life, that is if he believed she was telling the truth, which he wasn't sure he did yet. She hadn't quite explained how she knew he'd die.
"Are all o' ye this stubborn all the time?" Vanessa groaned as she fell back to walk next to Sam. "This is like the worst episode of Midsomer Murder ever."
"Episode of what?" Sam whispered but she just shook her head, mouthing never mind before they heard a clattering coming from inside one of the rooms.
Vanessa hadn't mentioned Samuel and his niece(? she couldn't remember) being here so it was bit of a nasty shock when they spotted him inside one of the rooms.
"Welcome to next time." Dean warned as he walked towards Samuel with his gun held out in front of him. About to make good on his promise from the last time he'd seen his grandfather.
"Wow, hey. No. No." Sam grabbed Dean's arm, lowering the gun much to Dean's annoyance.
"I said I'd kill him!" Dean yelled, trying to raise his gun again only for Sam to stand in front of him.
"Look, just a second, okay." Sam exhaled, looking over at Vanessa who stood innocently next to Rufus, rocking back and forth on her heels. "You couldn't have warned us?"
"What? I like the drama." She grinned, shrugging her shoulders and making Sam struggle not to smile.
"Do they know each other?" Rufus whispered to her and she nodded.
"He's their grandfather who sold them out to a demon and almost made them end up as ghoul supper, hence why Dean wants to kill him."
"Oh, well, that'll do it." Rufus huffed out a laugh as he looked away from her and back to the scene at hand.
"Who's she?" Samuel gestured to Vanessa who scrunched up her nose at him. The nerve he had to even look at her.
"None of your damn business!" Dean yelled, once again trying to raise his gun and he would have succeeded if it wasn't for Sam.
"Sam, take Dean for a walk." Bobby called over to Sam but Vanessa blocked the door.
"Trust me, you don't wanna do that." She shook her head, eyes wide as if to warn them that sending Dean outside would be a bad idea. She seemed to now recall Dean getting infected by the Khan Worm and killing Gwen, the woman with Samuel.
"What is she rambling on about." Samuel said in frustration, pissed that they were here disrupting his hunt.
"Shut it, Phil Mitchell." Vanessa hissed as she shot him a warning look and his jaw tensed with anger until Bobby and Rufus stepped in front of him, blocking his view of Vanessa.
Protective uncle mode activated.
"Phil who?"
"Ness, why can't Dean go outside?" Sam whispered, making sure Samuel couldn't hear them and ignoring Dean's last comment.
"Because I just remembered that the worm thing gets inside him and he kills her." Vanessa pointed at her ear then gestured towards Gwen, who looked rather lost.
"Gross." Dean shivered, sticking his tongue out at the idea of having a worm inside him. "Thanks for saving me from that."
"You're welcome. Now, it infects Samuel next and he dies today, which I'm guessing won't break your hearts so if you want we can let that happen or we can find the worm quickly, kill it, give Dean five minutes with Samuel then it's off to the pub for a round of pints."
Dean nodded in what seemed to be agreement, liking any plan that involved Samuel dying. Sam even seemed to agree too, but she wasn't sure to which part.
"Let's just let this play out and we'll see how it goes from there." Sam said, Vanessa and Dean nodding their heads.
"We good?" Bobby asked hesitantly as the three of them came back over.
"For now." Dean said as he glared at Samuel, who glared back.
"You can all leave, we got this covered." Samuel gestured to Gwen and Dean let out a scoff, as did Vanessa.
"No thanks, I think we'll stick around." Dean grinned sarcastically to annoy Samuel, who rolled his eyes.
"Do you even know what you're hunting, boy?"
"Eve." Vanessa said to Samuel's surprise as she earned his attention. "Mother of all, resident of Purgatory. We know all about her, including how to kill her which no we won't tell ye. Also know what we're hunting here, called a Khan Worm, gets inside ye and takes over yer body. Eve cooked it up herself a wee while ago, so it's a wee bit new but I also happen to know how to kill it as well."
Sam couldn't help but smile, his chest puffing with pride over Vanessa seemingly putting Samuel in his place.
"Does she come with subtitles?" Rufus whispered to Bobby.
"You get used to it." Bobby whispered back and Rufus nodded but he didn't quite believe that, given the puzzled look on Bobby's face.
"And you are?" Samuel practically spat, not appreciating the lip he was getting from this unfamiliar woman.
"None of your business." Vanessa said bluntly. "I don't take too kindly to men who sell their grandsons out to a demon and almost get them eaten by ghouls." Even if said demon happens to be her new best friend, Crowley's words, not hers.
"You don't know anything about me." Samuel said with distaste, a look of disgust on his face as he looked her up and down.
"Oh, I know all about you." Vanessa said through gritted teeth, Sam holding her arm to stop her moving forward, his own anger towards Samuel building.
"All right, enough." Bobby inferred, stepping between the two groups. "Let's just kill this thing so we can all go our separate ways."
And so the group split off, Samuel and Gwen went with Bobby. While the others stuck together to search the other half of the warehouse for the 'giant herpe' as Dean called it.
"A TV show?" Rufus exclaimed, having just had Vanessa explain where she was from and how she knew what she did.
"Uh huh." Vanessa nodded, stepping over a pile of empty cans.
"And I die today?"
"Not if I can help it. Yer death was one o' the most unnecessary deaths in the whole show so I'd very much like to save ye if I can."
"Well, bout damn time I got some recognition." Rufus huffed out a laugh. "You hear that boys, unnecessary."
"We hear that." Dean replied, smiling to himself and rolling his eyes, as was Sam until Vanessa skipped up beside him.
"Enjoying yourself?" He looked down at her and she nodded, a rather big smile on her face given the situation.
"Very much." She nodded, looking up at him, her tight curls bouncing as she walked. "I just hope it stays that way."
But like every episode of Supernatural ever, things weren't all that easy as a gunshot echoed throughout the building. The four of them rushed to the source, Gwen was lying dead on the floor much like the show, only this time she lasted longer so you know, good for her.
"There's been a murder." Vanessa whispered in a thick Scottish accent, not caring if this wasn't the time to quote TV shows.
"She's gone." Rufus straightened from where he'd felt for a pulse.
"It's either in Samuel or Bobby and we have no idea which one." Sam shook his head, looking over at Vanessa hoping for answers, which she didn't have.
"Ness, how do we test to see which one it's in?" Dean asked, stepping closer to her as if to say answer quickly.
"Electricity." Vanessa half-spluttered. "It hates electricity."
"Electricity, got it." Dean nodded, looking around the room for something he could use.
"Which is why I brought this." Vanessa held up a taser, pressing it on and making the guys jump at the sudden spark of blue electricity.
"Where did you get that?" Dean asked with a small scoff and a touch of pride.
"I took it from the boot of the Impala when you went to pee." She clicked it again, grinning at the crackle of the electricity as her eyes lit up.
Dean walked over to Sam, leaning in to whisper in his ear.
"Marry her." He pat his brother's shoulder, Sam's face falling at his words before Bobby came running towards them.
"Bobby." Rufus sighed in relief but also held up his gun for protection. Can never be too careful.
"It's in Samuel, guy went crazy and killed Gwen, tried to follow him but he's too quick." Bobby panted, out of breath and sweaty.
"Sure, sure Bob. Just gotta test you first." Rufus said hesitantly, looking towards Vanessa. "Ness, you wanna do the honours?"
"What the hell are you idjits talking about?" Bobby muttered and seemed to be walking backwards away from them, rather suspiciously, which is why Dean had snuck round behind him with a rope in his hands.
"We gotta see if that thing is in ye, Bobby." Vanessa said carefully as she approached him, taser held out in front of her.
Dean rushed forward, wrapping the rope around Bobby's front and holding his arms by his side. Vanessa set the taser on the lowest setting, looking apologetic before she stuck Bobby with it, making him groan in pain and writhe under the rope.
Vanessa didn't like hurting Bobby but she had to know if it was in him, and turns out it was. The worm fell from Bobby's ear, scurrying across the floor before Sam stepped on it, crushing it under his shoe and killing it.
"Gross." Dean shivered again as Bobby freed himself from his hold, rubbing at his ears in disgust.
"You're telling me." He muttered, face scrunching up at the goo on his fingers.
"Sorry I had to tase ye." Vanessa chuckled nervously, holding up the taser before turning it off and putting it back in her pocket. "Now, go kill Samuel so we can leave."
This case had went a lot differently that Vanessa remembered, Rufus was alive thankfully but so was Samuel, and she had no idea how that would effect the rest of the story so it was probably for the best that he dies.
"Don't need to tell me twice." Dean was already cocking his gun when Samuel returned, firing shots at them that bounced off their surroundings, the sound of metal on metal filling the air.
Sam grabbed Vanessa, shielding her in his arms as they dived behind an old desk, Rufus behind another, sitting adjacent to them. They didn't see where Dean and Bobby went.
"Are you okay?" Sam asked, panic in his voice as he checked Vanessa for wounds.
"I'm grand." She replied with a smile, taking his hands to stop him fussing over her, not that she minded. "He didn't get me."
Sam exhaled in relief, one hand quickly cupping Vanessa's face before it dropped, going to grab his gun from his waistband.
Samuel was still firing, clearly having reloaded as they all ducked away from him. There were other guns firing too, Vanessa guessed they were Dean's and Bobby's as neither Rufus nor Sam were firing.
The firing ceased, Samuel now dead on the ground, however a lone bullet ricocheted, bouncing off a metal beam and piercing right through Vanessa's shoulder, making her cry out in pain.
Vanessa's hand shot up to her shoulder, the blood seeping through her fingers as the pain throbbed, running sharp down her arm and across her chest.
"Ness!" Sam's gun fell from his hands and he was next to her in a second, his hand replacing hers and keeping pressure on her wound.
"Take the piss." Vanessa groaned to herself as she blinked back tears, the others rushing towards her with looks of concern on their faces. "Relax, I ain't dead yet."
"More than can be said for Samuel." Bobby managed to huff out a laugh mixed with a sigh of relief that Vanessa's humour remained intact.
"Good, absolute wanker he was." She mumbled, taking deep breaths as her shoulder throbbed. "Sam, help me up."
"Course, yeah." Sam said flustered, his heart had almost stopped the minute that bullet hit her. He thought she'd be dead.
Vanessa was hauled to her feet, Sam not letting go for a second as he walked her outside, which she appreciated. She felt safe in his arms, and comforted.
"At least I managed to save Rufus." Vanessa chuckled weakly, feeling a little faint from the blood loss.
"That you did, kid." Rufus pat her gently on her not shot shoulder, a small smile on his face. "I owe you one."
"S'nothing." Vanessa's speech was a little slurred as she fell against Sam, her whole body weight pushing against him. She'd had thin blood her whole life which meant she bled a lot quicker than most people, meaning she'd need a hospital soon or she'd end up dead.
"Ness, hey. Hey, look at me." Sam said worryingly as he took her face, tilting it towards him, but she'd already passed out, her eyelids shut and her mouth slightly gaped.
"Balthazar!" Dean called to the sky, turning in a circle as he called out again. He didn't feel like calling Castiel, he wasn't sure where the angel sat with them.
"Yes boys?" Balthazar's signature accent greeted them and Dean spun on his heels, his face clouded with worry for Vanessa.
"Heal her." Dean's voice almost trembled as his eyes moved to Vanessa who lay limp against Sam, whose eyes were nearly watering.
"Oh dear, can't have this now can we?" Balthazar stepped forward, two fingers touching Vanessa's forehead. Her wound vanished, along with any indication that she'd even been shot.
"Ness, can you hear me?" Sam exhaled and she began to stir, his hands on her face as her eyes opened.
"What time zone is this?" She asked sleepily and Sam let out a laugh of relief, pulling her into his arms and embracing her, which she graciously accepted.
Sam couldn't lose her, not her. Not like that. It pained him the moment that bullet hit her, as if it had hit him too. His heart had ached when she passed out, falling limp in his arms as if dead. He couldn't lose her. It would simply break him.
"I'm glad you're okay." He whispered into her nest of curls, a lone tear running down his cheek as he felt her hands on his back. Eventually he pulled away, holding her face with one hand before he backed away, allowing the others a chance to even see her.
The four of them waiting patiently with knowing looks on their faces, even Rufus could tell there was something between them. Which was even clearer now since Vanessa almost died.
"This has been fun, but best be off. Angels to avoid and that. Cheerio." Balthazar waved his fingers before he vanished, leaving the five of them on their own again.
"What now? Pub?" Vanessa looked around, smiling at the guys who just chuckled. Trust an Irish woman to get shot then immediately suggest the pub.
But since she did get shot, they allowed her to drag them to the nearest bar. The four of them huddled around a table in the corner while Dean got drinks at the bar.
"To celebrate a job well done, thanks to our lucky charm here." Dean gestured to Vanessa who rolled her eyes and sighed at his nickname. Sighing even more when five pints of Guinness were set on the table.
"How stereotypical of you, Dean." Vanessa muttered, nodding in thanks as Sam passed her one. Vanessa knew fully well that this was not Irish Guinness but she played along, pretending that the first sip didn't make her want to shoot herself again.
"To the luck of Irish, for without it, I'd be dead." Rufus toasted, the five of them clinking glasses and repeating 'luck of the Irish', well except Vanessa who refused to say it.
"Just wish that luck would stretch so we could stop Castiel opening Purgatory." Vanessa said, not meaning to bring the mood down but she couldn't stop thinking that if only she'd been brought here sooner, she could have stopped it.
"You've done plenty, take a day, relax." Bobby replied, the thick foam of his drink covering his moustache.
"I can't relax when there's so many things I need to do." Vanessa replied, sighing as she trailed her fingertip around the rim of her glass.
"We need to do, not just you." Sam corrected her, his hand landing on her back in a comforting way. "This isn't your fight, it's ours."
"It wouldn't be anyone's fight if I could just find Gabriel, then he could sort Raphael out and we wouldn't have to worry about anything big until 2013." Vanessa sighed, leaning her head against Sam's arm.
"What happens in 2013?" Dean asked but his face read do I even wanna know?
"We'll get there, unfortunately it's something I can't stop." Vanessa sighed again and Sam's hand moved up, slinking round her shoulder as he held her against him. His warmth bringing her comfort as her own arm hooked around his back.
"Care to give us any hints?" Bobby questioned, making her look over at him.
"Demon."
"Awesome." Dean muttered, taking a rather large mouthful of his beer.
"I need some air." Vanessa breathed, pulling away from Sam and standing up, walking towards the door before anyone could call after her.
"You go." Dean said to Sam, gesturing to door and Sam nodded, getting up from his seat to follow Vanessa.
He found her sitting on a bench outside, her knees against her chest as her feet rested on the edge of the wood below her.
It must be hard for her, knowing what she does. Trying to remember every little detail so she can stop them from happening, but he didn't envy her for knowing. Instead he felt sorry for her, this huge burden she had that she wouldn't let them share in fear that they'd hate what they heard, or in some cases they'd like it and want to go down that road.
Sam just wanted to help her, to help lift some of the burden from her but she wouldn't let them. She still refused to tell them anything they didn't need to know, which he would respect but it didn't mean that he didn't wish she would just tell them, that way she wouldn't feel as though everything was her responsibility.
"You okay?" Sam asked softly, taking a seat next to her, keeping some space between them.
"No." Vanessa sniffled, unsure why she had tears in her eyes. Perhaps the shock of getting shot had made the realisation of her situation finally sink in. "I know I saved Rufus but if I had just remembered about Eve in the beginning I could have stopped all of this, I wouldn't have had to save him because there'd be nothing to save him from."
"Hey, Eve is not your fault. None of this is. You're doing your best, Ness, better than any of us would in your situation... You just got here from a different world, no one expects you to just jump right in and try to fix things. You need to take it slow, stop putting so much pressure on yourself and let us help." Sam moved closer but she didn't look at him, instead she stared off into the distance, her eyes fixed on a billboard with a large cow on it.
"Let me help." Sam added, his hand landing on hers which gained her attention. "Let me help you."
"I can't." She whispered, shaking her head as a tear rolled down her cheeks, Sam sighing in defeat.
She knew she couldn't tell Sam everything, how could she when part of it involved him not looking for Dean in Purgatory because he was too busy playing house with some random woman.
How could she tell him he fell in love with Amelia and because of her he'd never meet her? How could she tell him she was keeping him from her because she didn't want him being with anyone that wasn't her.
How could she tell him that she'd fallen in love with him?
-it's so fun getting to change up the cases as write my own little parts especially with Vanessa as I can finally write an OC who talks the way I do - irish
yes this is basically a self insert, sue me
also bonus points to those of you who get my references, I picked Vanessa's 'agent' name to match one of my favourite tv shows
