02 || LUCKY CHARMS
18:54, 30 July 2023Being soulless for a year or finding out there's an Irish girl from another universe sleeping upstairs, Sam didn't know which one seemed more crazy to him.
Both seemed pretty unbelievable. Especially when in Vanessa's universe, his life was a TV show, one which she'd seen more than once meaning she probably knew more about him than he did about himself.
"How's she holding up anyway?" Sam asked Dean, the two of them sitting at Bobby's kitchen table. He couldn't imagine how it must feel to not only be stuck in another universe without a single way of getting home but to also be in an entirely different country.
"I think she's still in shock, I mean not only has she ended up in a different universe, one where monsters exist outside of TV, but she's also in a completely different year."
"She's from 2023 right?" Dean hummed in agreement as he spooned some cereal into his mouth. "I wonder what that's like."
"How long you got?" Vanessa's soft voice reached their ears, followed by a small chuckle over the idea of telling the brothers all about the years 2020 to 2023. Those three years would make the apocalypse feel like a trip to the Aqua Dome.
Sam turned, his eyes widening at the girl behind him. He hadn't seen her yet, she was asleep when he finally woke and they thought best not to disturb her but she wasn't what he'd pictured. For one she was short, like 5 foot 4 short, and secondly she was incredibly pale, like really, really pale. Had Sam not known better he'd have thought she was a vampire pulled straight from a movie.
Vanessa's mane of ginger curls was tied back in a messy ponytail, a few loose ones falling down the side of her freckled covered face. She wore one of Sam's old t-shirts that practically drowned her it was so big on her, the hem of it reaching her knees and the short sleeves touching her elbows.
"Morning." Dean said with a smile as she walked further into the kitchen, her nose scrunching up at the strong smell of coffee.
"Mornin'." She managed a weak smile pointed towards both brothers, she didn't exactly have the energy to play meet and greet with Sam right now especially when she hadn't had her first of many cups of tea. "D'ya have any tea?"
"Tea?" It was Sam who answered her. "I, uh, I don't think so."
Vanessa groaned quietly to herself, the hardest part about ending up in another universe wasn't the fact that it happened to basically be a TV show, no, it was the fact that she was now in America, that was the hard part.
The supernatural she should handle. The lack of Tayto crisps, PG Tips and Cadbury's Crème Eggs, she couldn't.
"Not a coffee person?" Sam asked curiously, sipping on his own hot cup.
"Not exactly." Vanessa replied, her accent getting thicker the more she spoke and the more awake she got.
"We can make a run, pick up some stuff for you if you want." Sam was trying to be nice and Vanessa appreciated that which is why she didn't mean for her next words to sound so rude.
"Somehow I don't think I'll find what I'm looking for in a 7-11." Sam winced a little at her tone of voice and she sighed. "Sorry, I appreciate you wantin' to help, it's just I get moody in the mornings."
"Don't worry about it." Sam smiled briefly. "You have every right to be."
"Can I ask you something?" Dean turned to her and she nodded. "What's it like? The future?"
"D'ya want the short version or the long version?"
"That bad huh?" Dean raised his eyebrow and Vanessa huffed out a laugh. "Let's go with short version."
"Well there was the global pandemic, that's technically still happening I guess people just don't listen to rules now. Uh, Donald Trump became President. Betty White died. Russia invaded the Ukraine. Prince Phillip died and then the Queen herself died."
"Wow, makes our world seem almost normal." Sam chuckled and looked over at Dean who was still processing the fact that Betty White died and wasn't actually an immortal being.
He'd never watch Golden Girls the same way ever again.
"So, now I get to look forward to all of that again." A sarcastic smile appeared on Vanessa's face, one that dropped just as quick as it formed. "Only this time with more monsters and demons."
"Speaking of demons." Dean snapped out of his trance and cleared his throat. "The minute they find out who she is, they'll be after her. We need to get her inked up and make some of the those hex bags."
"Inked up?" Vanessa's eyebrow raised and Sam pulled his shirt aside, showing her his anti-possession tattoo. "Right, cause I can get possessed now. Brilliant. Am I gonna end up with Enochian branded on me ribs too?"
"Hey that's not a bad idea, actually. The angels will probably also be curious to find out what she knows." Dean said towards Sam before turning back to her. "You still plan on keeping what you know a secret?"
Vanessa had thought about telling them everything. From Bobby dying to the angels falling to Lucifer having a love child and their mother coming back from the dead but maybe that wasn't such a good idea. Especially because she knew once she mentioned Mary they'd make sure things went how they were supposed to and Vanessa really didn't want to have to live through all that. Or have to be around Mary either, she couldn't stand her.
"I think it's for the best." Vanessa moved towards them, taking the empty seat beside Sam. "I'll tell you bits and pieces when you need to know them, and obviously I'll stop any bad things happening but otherwise, it's a need to know basis."
"Sounds fair." Sam said with a nod, he wasn't exactly eager to find out what would happen in their lives to result in the show having fifteen seasons. Sure he was curious but he'd respect Vanessa's decision to not tell them what she thought they didn't need to know.
Dean on the other hand wasn't as happy with that decision. He wanted to know everything, to decide whether he wanted it to happen or whether he didn't. But with a stern look and a kick under the table from Sam, he agreed.
"Can you at least tell us one little thing? Something that won't effect what happens in the future?" Dean tried to put on the 'Sam puppy dog' eyes but it just made him look like he needed the toilet.
"I suppose, uh, let's see..." Vanessa's forehead creased and she bit at her lip trying to think of something that was irrelevant to the main story of the show.
Right now she was having a hard time even remembering what happened in the show let alone the random unrelated cases or pieces of information.
"Oh! Sam, d'ya remember your old imaginary friend?"
"Sully?" Sam's brow furrowed and he glanced between his brother and Vanessa. He'd never told anyone besides Dean about Sully.
"Aye, him. Well, turns out he's real and he's actually some being, I cannae remember what exactly. But he shows up asking for your help when someone starts murdering his friends. One of which is a mermaid and the other one has a mullet."
"A mullet?" Dean asked, a mix of disgust and disturbance clouding his face. "You know, I'm sorry I asked."
Vanessa tilted her head in agreement, a small smile on her face. It was weird but somehow she felt a little... at home, sitting here in Bobby's house with Sam and Dean. A lot more at home than she'd felt for a long time back in Ireland. She wasn't sure if it was because she'd seen Supernatural so many times or whether it was just nice to be around people her own age for once, who she didn't feel the need to make small talk with. But it was nice, and maybe she'd find herself liking it here, that is if she could somehow get to Ireland to do a bit of food shopping.
"So Vanessa-"
"Ah, please, call me Ness. No one calls me Vanessa." She cut Sam off and he smiled, nodding his head.
"Ness, tell us about yourself. I mean, you know pretty much everything about us and we know zero about you."
"Fair point." Vanessa shuffled in her seat, pulling the t-shirt she wore further under her legs to stop them sticking to the seat. "Well, I'm 26. I've lived in Ireland my whole life. I worked as a chef in a local restaurant. I like to read. My favourite movies are, well they aren't even out yet so that's annoying..." Vanessa went on to tell the boys everything they could possibly need to know about her, after all it was only fair when she knew so much about them.
Bobby had joined them midway through their conversation, also eager to know about the new resident that would now be staying in his home. They'd all come to agree that this was the safest place for Vanessa, at least for now, as once word got out about her she'd be at risk of being kidnapped and tortured for information.
That and they'd already grown fond of her, despite having only just met her. But her bubbly personality (even with the multiversal travel was still present) and her fun accent, albeit strange words, she was nice to be around. Although they might change their mind on that the first time she gets pissed off.
"First order of business, we need to get you some new clothes. You can't exactly go around wearing the boys old clothes." Bobby told them as he stood from the table, clearing the empty dishes and setting them in the sink.
"Right. I forgot about that." Vanessa bit at the skin on her lips at the idea of clothes shopping in America... She doubted she'd find a Penneys anywhere nearby.
"We'll take her. It's not like we have anything else to do." Dean said with a shrug as he stood up.
Vanessa couldn't help but feel like there was something she was forgetting about this part of the show but she couldn't quite remember. It's not like they offered a timeline as to when and where things happened and she was pretty sure she was going to be unable to stop Castiel opening Purgatory, which she would probably have to tell the boys at some point, but not right now. Raphael had to be dealt with and that's the only way she could think of to stop him.
Once she got herself situated she'd sit and write down all she could remember about this particular year and what needed to happen and what didn't. But for now... clothes shopping.
Vanessa changed back into her own clothes, the ones she'd arrived in and graciously accepted one of Dean's shirts to wear over her t-shirt.
"Lucky charms, are you coming or what?" Dean called upstairs as Vanessa left her room, frowning at the choice of nickname.
"You know we don't actually have lucky charms in Ireland." She told him, the stairs creaking beneath her as she walked down.
"Wait seriously?" Dean asked, his mouth a little gaped at her confession. He would have thought they'd be the statement cereal of Ireland.
"Seriously. I mean you can get them in American sweet shops and that, but they're fierce expensive and they're also chock full of sugar and I like me teeth how they are thanks." Dean didn't understand half of what just came out of Vanessa's mouth but he got the gist of it and nodded then motioned for her to follow him.
Vanessa's eyes widened at the sight of the Impala, she's honestly forgotten all about the car and now here it was in all its glory.
"Wanna ride shotgun?" Dean grinned at her and she nodded, rushing towards the car and heading for the... drivers side? "Uh, Ness. It's the-the other side."
"Jesus, I forgot about Americans and their backwards cars and their driving on the right side of the road, making me look like a right feckin' eejit." Vanessa mumbled in a heavy accent, once again leaving Dean bewildered over the words coming from her mouth. For such a small girl she certainly had a mouth on her, and not one that was easily understood.
Once she was finally in the right (wrong) side of the car, Sam slipped into the back, unamused that he had to sit there, his long legs hitting the back of the front seat.
It was a fairly short drive into town, Vanessa being extra cautious when she exited the car that she wasn't run over after having looked the wrong way before crossing the street. Americans and their way of driving, she'd never get used to it.
Sam and Dean took her to some clothes shops, letting her pick out whatever she wanted. Her style normally wouldn't fit with theirs, given the amount of flannel shirts they both own but she had a feeling she'd have a hard time hunting in dresses, that is if they even let her learn how to hunt. Which she wanted to, of course she did. So she went full lumberjack, adding an array of green and orange shirts to her pile, gotta represent the homeland after all.
A few other basic things were added to her shopping list, hair stuff, shower stuff, a little makeup and other "girl things" as Dean called them. Tampons. That's what he was referring to.
It was strange for Vanessa, seeing Sam and Dean doing domestic things like clothes shopping or whatever. The show never really showed that part of their lives so it would take some getting used to and she also had to keep reminding herself that it no longer was a show but real life instead. Her life, now.
"You guys hungry? I'm hungry." Dean rambled as he held his stomach, a low gurgle following his words.
"You're always hungry." Sam said with a small chuckle as he loaded Vanessa's new phone with all the contact numbers she'd need.
"If we nip to a supermarket and grab a few things, I could make you lads something when we get back." Vanessa suggested with a shrug of her shoulder. She wanted to cook, it was her job after all, but if they preferred take-out or a diner or whatever she wouldn't be offended.
"A home cooked meal?" Sam said with a scoff, looking over at her. "Don't think we've ever had one of those that wasn't out of a tin."
"Hey, there's nothing wrong with eating food from a tin." Dean said defensively, although he seemed pretty excited at the idea of a home cooked meal.
"It's Sunday right?" Vanessa asked, back in her universe it would have been Sunday but here, she wasn't even sure what day it was.
"Right." Dean nodded, and Vanessa's lips rose into a smile.
"Then I know the perfect meal to make you lads."
A quick trip to the supermarket later, the three of them returned home to Bobby's. Vanessa made them all a few sandwiches, while she prepared the dinner she had planned for them.
"My God." Dean burped, leaning back on his chair with his hands on his stomach. "That was the best sandwich I've ever tasted. You..." He pointed towards Vanessa who was currently peeling potatoes. "...are never leaving."
"Couldn't leave even if I wanted to." Vanessa replied humorously with a raise of her eyebrows.
Truthfully she found she didn't really want to leave anymore, she liked being here and the guys were making her feel very welcomed, despite the trust issues they seemed to have with new people. But Vanessa figured that having Castiel give her the all clear made it a little easier for the guys to trust her.
Vanessa was still a little worried though, that when they found out she was going to allow Castiel to open Purgatory in order to kill Raphael but at the same time release a bunch of extremely old beasts that had been locked away since before the dawn of time, that they'd soon lose that trust. But there was no other way, no other way to stop Raphael. And she knew how to stop the Leviathans so hopefully they'd forgive her.
While the dinner was cooking, Vanessa sat at the kitchen table, a brand new journal sitting in front of her as she began to write down everything about the show that seemed important. Things she was hoping to try and stop from happening. Like the Darkness for example.
Writing it out season by season seemed to help her form some sort of timeline, one which didn't exactly have accurate dates as they never quite went into much detail in the show about that. But she was just hoping that the events leading up to certain things would help her piece it all together easily enough.
"Hey." Sam said softly as he entered the kitchen, Vanessa quickly shutting her journal incase he saw her writing about a certain red-eyed demon who was supposed to be dead.
She'd tell them about Crowley at some point too, but not right now.
"Hey." Vanessa smiled as Sam stood awkwardly in the middle of the kitchen, unsure whether she'd want him to join her or not.
"May I?" He gestured to the seat in front of her and she nodded, pushing it out with her foot and allowing him to sit facing her. "That all your secrets you have written in there?" His tone humorous and a small smile on his face.
"Those I can remember." Vanessa nodded, her fingers tapping lightly on the leather bound journal. "It had been a while since I watched the show so it's a little hard to remember every little detail."
"Don't push yourself, if something happens that you didn't remember, we'll manage." Vanessa offered him a kind smile, she'd always found Sam's caring personality to be something she liked about him and now here he was acting that way towards her. She didn't quite know how to feel.
Vanessa was never a Sam or a Dean girl, she much preferred side characters like Crowley or Rowena or Gabriel, but she found herself beginning to like Sam a lot more now that she'd actually met him.
He'd helped her out when they were shopping, staying by her side when Dean wandered off, making sure she didn't get lost or overwhelmed by the new environment and she appreciated that. She was from a small town, not used to ones quite this big so she was thankful for Sam, even though he was tall enough she'd probably be able to spot him from anywhere.
Getting her tattoo wasn't fun either but Sam stayed with her, even held her hand when the guy began jamming the needle into her chest. She hadn't went into the shop intending on getting it in the same place as the brothers but they both seemed to insist, saying it was only right that she matched them. And well, who was she to say no.
And now Sam was sitting facing her, his eyes focused on her as she tried her hardest not to blush under his gaze.
Sam couldn't help but stare at her, how pretty she was. Her bright orange curls, her cute, little freckles that covered her nose and cheeks, standing out against her pale skin.
Another thing Vanessa bought a lot of was sunscreen, otherwise she'd burn quicker than an angel dipped in holy oil.
Sam liked her, she was fun to be around and he found himself enjoying her company despite having only met her that morning. She knew about him, about the things he'd done (and would do) yet she didn't look at him any differently from Dean or Bobby. Didn't look at him in disgust knowing he'd drank demon blood, or let Lucifer out of his cage. She didn't judge the things he did with Ruby or when he had no soul, which apparently he wasn't supposed to find out about yet but she reassured Dean it wasn't a bad thing as long as they didn't talk about Hell.
Vanessa would be making damn sure Castiel didn't break down Sam's wall. She couldn't watch him go through all that in person.
Her accent was also something Sam liked, how different she sounded to everyone else and how her words made Dean confused, often muttering them to himself as if that would help him understand what they meant. Sam could listen to her talk for hours.
What was with him and falling for people he'd just met?
"Am I interrupting something?" Dean's teasing voice snapped the two of them from their trance as he grinned from catching them staring lovingly into each others eyes.
"No." Sam said bluntly, rolling his eyes at his childish brother.
Vanessa cleared her throat, getting up from the table and putting her journal away somewhere they couldn't snoop in it. The dinner was almost ready and the boys were eager to find out what she'd made them, the smell was mouthwatering and they couldn't wait.
"May I present the traditional Sunday dinner in Ireland." Vanessa set four plates on the table, each covered in creamy mash potatoes, perfectly cooked roast beef, crispy roast potatoes, a mix of different vegetables, Yorkshire puddings and plenty of gravy.
"What are these?" Dean held a Yorkshire pudding on his fork, eyeing it suspiciously before biting into it. "Okay, that's amazing."
"It's a Yorkshire pudding. The food of the God's." She hummed to herself as she bit into her own. "Nothing beats a good old Irish roast dinner."
"Cheers to that." Bobby raised his beer bottle before tucking into his own plate. It had been years since he'd eaten anything like this.
"Ness, seriously this is amazing." Sam said around a mouthful of food, it tasting too good for him to care about manners.
"Incredible." Dean added as he scooped a second helping of potatoes onto his plate. "I meant what I said earlier, you're never leaving."
"I honestly wouldn't want to." Vanessa replied, to their surprise. "It's strange but I actually like it here, although I may change my mind when something actually supernatural happens but for now I'm enjoying it."
"You don't miss home?" Bobby asked her, taking a swig of beer.
"I do, but there's nothing really back there for me. No family, just a handful of friends who I didn't see much due to work, which I do kind of miss so you better get used to me cooking-"
"Hell yeah." Dean.
"-but other than that, I like it here and I know I'll be able to do some good and make your lives a little less chaotic than the ones I've seen." Vanessa said with a smile.
"You really are our lucky charm aren't you?" Dean grinned and earned himself a kick under the table and a glare from Vanessa.
That nickname was definitely here to stay.
-honestly not sure how i feel about this chapter but i hope you like it!
