CHAPTER 9

Shared Silence

Few Weeks Later

A

uthorโ€™s POV

The drive was quiet.

Neither of them spoke, but the silence was far from emptyโ€”it was laced with thoughts neither dared to voice. Y/n sat quietly, her hands folded neatly in her lap, stealing glances at Mr. Jeon as he kept his eyes fixed on the road. His expression remained unreadable, yet strangely calming.

When they arrived at his houseโ€”a minimalist, neatly kept place tucked into a quiet neighborhoodโ€”Y/n stepped out, nerves twisting in her stomach. Sheโ€™d never imagined she would one day be standing at her professorโ€™s front door.

Yet here she was.

---

Y/n's POV

Once inside, the warmth of his home surprised me. It was simple but cozy. Clean shelves, soft lighting, and the faint scent of cedarwood lingering in the air. I followed him into the living room, still unsure what to say or how to act.

Mr. Jeon: glancing over his shoulder โ€œAre you hungry?โ€

I nodded slightly. โ€œUmmโ€ฆ maybe.โ€

He didnโ€™t press. Instead, he offered a small nod, his voice lighter than usual. โ€œExplore if you want. Iโ€™ll cook.โ€

With that, he disappeared into the kitchen.

I wandered the living room, trying not to stare too much at the neatly organized bookshelves or the soft couch that looked too clean to ever be used. His home didnโ€™t feel coldโ€”it feltโ€ฆ lived in. Somehow, that made it harder to stay detached.

Soon, the table was set, and we ate quietly. No forced conversation. No awkward tension. Just shared silence and clinking cutlery. And oddly, that silence feltโ€ฆ comforting.

---

Later That Night

After dinner, Mr. Jeon disappeared into a hallway and returned with fresh bedsheets and a pillow.

Mr. Jeon: โ€œYou can take the bed. Iโ€™ll sleep on the couch.โ€

I opened my mouth to protest.

Y/n: โ€œNo, Iโ€™ll sleep on theโ€”โ€

Mr. Jeon: interrupting with a firm, but gentle tone โ€œShut up, Y/n. Just take the bed.โ€

His voice wasnโ€™t harsh, but it left no room for argument.

Reluctantly, I nodded. โ€œOkayโ€ฆโ€

I walked into the bedroom, the soft sheets feeling unfamiliar under my hands. I lay down, wrapping myself in the blanket, but I couldnโ€™t sleep. The quiet buzz of the house only made my thoughts louder.

Suddenlyโ€”โ€œAHHHHHHH!โ€

My scream pierced the silence as I jumped out of bed, pointing toward the corner.

Y/n: โ€œCockroach! Thereโ€™s a cockroach! Oh my God!โ€

Within seconds, Mr. Jeon came running.

Mr. Jeon: half-concerned, half-amused โ€œWhere is it?โ€

Y/n: โ€œThere!โ€ I pointed frantically.

He calmly walked over, looked around, and shook his head.

Mr. Jeon: โ€œItโ€™s gone, Y/n. You can relax.โ€

I looked at him with wide eyes, still frozen in fear.

Y/n: whispering โ€œNoโ€ฆ Iโ€™m scared.โ€

There was a pause.

Mr. Jeon: gently โ€œDo youโ€ฆ want me to sleep with you?โ€

I hesitatedโ€”my pride screaming no, but my fear stronger.

I nodded.

He didnโ€™t question it.

Back in Bed โ€“ Shared Moments

He lay down beside me, careful to keep a respectful distance. But even so, his presence calmed me. His body radiated warmth, and the faint rhythm of his breathing helped me settle.

Mr. Jeon: softly โ€œBetter now?โ€

I nodded again. โ€œYeahโ€ฆโ€

There was a moment of silence before his arm movedโ€”hesitantlyโ€”wrapping around me protectively.

I didnโ€™t pull away.

In fact, I let myself lean into the comfort of his embrace.

It was wrong. It was complicated. But for that moment, it was safe.

And somehowโ€ฆ right.

---

Morning โ€“ Y/nโ€™s POV

The soft rays of sunlight slipped through the curtains and kissed my face. I stirred gently, realizing I was still curled against him, his arm still draped around me.

His breathing was slow and peaceful. When I turned slightly, his eyes fluttered open.

Y/n: โ€œGood morningโ€ฆโ€

Mr. Jeon: smiling, voice husky from sleep โ€œGood morning, Y/n.โ€

There was a long pause. Then, I whispered:

Y/n: โ€œThank youโ€ฆโ€

I didnโ€™t just mean for letting me stay. I meant for the safety. For the comfort. For not crossing any lines.

He reached out, brushing a stray hair from my face.

Mr. Jeon: โ€œNo need to thank me. It was my pleasure.โ€

---

Authorโ€™s POV

As Y/n stepped out of his house that morning, the sky was a pale blue, fresh with promise. They didnโ€™t talk much after breakfast. But a silent understanding passed between themโ€”a fragile thread forming between two unlikely people.

Something had changed.Something was changing.

Whether they were ready or not, their worlds were beginning to intertwine.
