Chapter 6 | S a m a n t h a s p o v

Before I talk to the guy I look back at Jace. He smiles and gives me a thumbs up.

I take a deep breath then I finally build up enough courage to speak.

"Umm, uh, hey my name is Samantha."

He looks up from his book and turns around. He stands up and faces me. On a scale of 1-10 he's probably a 3 but he's a guy and that's all that matters.

He sniffles a little then clears his throat. "Um hello?" He says in a annoyed tone.

"I was wondering if I could maybe get to know you a little?" I ask nervously.

He laughs as he takes of his glasses and wipes them off. "You're really funny ya know?" He says.

I raise one of my eyebrows. "What's so funny?" I ask.

His face turns serious. "I'm a nerd. Girls don't ever talk to me. This is obviously just a prank that you and yourr little 'girl friends' dared you to pull on me. Now if you would excuse me I'm reading. Please leave me alone." He says bluntly.

Wow. I just got rejected by a nerd, when I am a nerd.

I stare at him in awe. I open my mouth to say something but nothing comes out.

After staring him for awhile he finally glares at me signaling for me to get away from him.

I drop my head down in despair and start walking back to the table where Jace was sitting.

Before I could reach the table Jace runs up to me with a smile on his face.

"Soooo Sam how'd it go?" He ask. nudging my shoulder.

"My name is Samantha, and I got rejected." I say quietly.

Jace wraps his arm around my shoulder and chuckles softly. "Your name is Sam, and don't worry one reject is nothing. There are tons of other guys in this mall that you can talk to." Jace assures.

"It's almost 7:30 witch is my bed time. I wanna go home. I'm done talking to random guys." I say pouting a little.

"Sam you've only talked to one guy. You'll be fine. And like I said your 15 you don't need to be going to bed a 7:30." Jace shrugs.

"But I like going to bed at 7:30." I say quietly.

Jace winks at me. "After awhile you're gonna hate going to bed a 7:30."

I tilt my head. "What are getting at Jace?"

He grins. "You'll see."

Jace pulls my arm as we walk through the mall. Until he stops and turns to me.

"Sam look there's a guy go talk to him." Jace says pointing to a guy wearing a red shirt.

I cross my arms. "Please don't make me."

"Sam, you can do it. This time use some of the tips I gave you." Jace says pushing me towards the guy in the red shirt. Jace pushes me so hard I bump into the guy.

No wonder this dude is football player he's strong as hell.

I turn around and give Jace a death glare. He mouths the word "Sorry" then gives me a thumbs up.

I turn towards the guy and start  thinking of the tips Jace gave me. Jace uses his sense of humor and cheesy pick up lines to get girls so let me give being 'funny' a try.

I tap the guys shoulder. He turns around and smiles at me.

"Hey." He says.

"Hey." I say back.

What do I say now?

Just then my mind goes blank. I get nervous then I just blurt out my name. "I'M SAMANTHA!" I yell in an awkwardly loud tone.

He chuckles a little. "I'm Cory." he says sweetly.

"WELL MY NAME IS SAMANTHA! AND THE NAME SAMANTHA HAS THE WORD 'MAN' IN IT AND YOUR A MAN I GUESS? AND I LIKE MEN SO I WAS WONDERING IF I COULD HAVE YOUR NUMBER?" I say super fast and super loud.

I'm so cringe it's scary.

Cory looks at me like he's scared. "Why are you talking so loud?" He asks.

Yeah why am I talking so loud?

"I don't know why I'm talking so loud, Can I just have your number?" I say in a frustrated tone.

He gives me a confused look. "Why?" He asks.

I drop down to my knees and grab a hold of his leg. "PLEASE, JUST GIVE ME YOUR PHONE NUMBER PLEASE! I AM BEGGING YOU! PLEASE!" I yell.

What the holy Jesus fuck am I doing?

He tries to shake me off his leg but I won't let go. I'm determined to get his number.

"Hey! Get off of my leg!" He screams.

I look around and everybody is staring at me. I let go of his leg and watch him run away. I face palm then I lay down flat on floor and close my eyes.

I'm a complete mess. Why is talking to guys so hard?

As my eyes are close a feel someone tug at my arm. I open my eyes and see Jace towering over me. He puts out his hand. I let out a huge sigh the I grab his hand and he helps me up.

"Well that was fun to watch." Jace says while laughing.

I glare at him trying not to laugh. "Shut up." I snap.

He continues laughing.

I watch him laugh with a straight face.

This time I'm gonna prove to him a can get a guys number...

I scan the food court for a guy. I spot a guy in a blue shirt eating subway. I stomp away from Jace and he calls after me. But I keep walking.

As soon as I reach the guy. I sit down. I hear Jace calling my name repeatedly. But I ignore it. I start talking to the guy.

"Hey I'm Samantha." I say smiling.

I get no response.

I wait a couple of seconds then talk again.

"So what's your name?" I ask.

Still no response.

"HEY BUD! I'M TALKING TO YOU!" I say loudly.

Still no response.

I feel someone grab my arm. I turn around and see Jace. He pulls me out of my chair and drags me away from the guy.

"Hey, I was trying to talk to that guy! You said I was supposed to be talking to guys then you just march over to me and-"

Jace cuts me off by putting his hand over my mouth.

"Sam, that's Joey, he's deaf." Jace says.

I feel so stupid right now.

"Ohhhhhhhhh so that's why he wasn't responding to me." I say.

Jace laughs and nods his head. "That's why I calling your name."

"I feel so dumb what was I thinking?" I shake my head.

"Hey don't beat yourself up about it." Jace says with sympathy.

"How can I not, I'm a mess." I take a deep breath.

Jace pulls out his phone a shows me the screen. "It's 8:30 and the mall closes at 9. So you have just enough time to get at least 1 guys number."

I shrug. "I mind as well give up. I'm not gonna get a number anyways."

Jace looks me in the eyes and runs his fingers through his hair. "Ugh Sam just stop doubting yourself. You know what just forget about all those other tips I gave you. I have another idea."

"Which is?" I ask.

He puts his hands on my shoulders. Jace's voice becomes sweet and soft. "Just be yourself." he says.

"But 'myself' is nerdy and weird and awkward and-"

Jace cuts me off. "Who cares. Yourself is YOU and if the guy doesn't like you for you then they're not worth it. Understand?"

I nod my head. Then I turn away from Jace and bite my lip.

He's right.

"Now go get that number!" He yells.

I slightly smile then I walk towards the nearest guy.

I close my eyes. What jace said runs threw my mind "Just be yourself."

I take a deep breathe then I speak "Hi I'm Samantha."

"Hey I'm Jacob." He replies.

I smile. "Cool name."

Jacob smiles back. "Your name is cool too. Do you mind if i call you Sam?" He asks.

Just then I freeze up. The only person that calls me Sam is Jace, and that's already annoying enough. I don't need two people calling me Sam.

"There is only one person who calls me Sam. Even though I hate being called Sam. I prefer Samantha." I state.

"Oh that's cool. I understand" he says smiling.

We talk for awhile until I decide to pop the question.

"So I was wondering if I could have your number?" I ask nervously.

He nods his head. "Sure."

He takes out a little note pad and writes his number down. He hands me the slip and then walks away.

I turn around and see Jace standing by the elevator talking on the phone. I run straight to Jace and jump on his back scaring him making him drop his phone so he can balance me on his back.

"I got his number!" I brag messing up Jace's hair with my hand.

Jace laughs. "Congrats! You're almost ready to start talking to Billy!"

"Yay!" I yell.

I hop off of Jace's back and pick up his phone and examine it to make sure it's not broken. It's in perfect condition still.

I hand him his phone while laughing. "Sorry I made you drop your phone."

He smiles. "It's cool"

"So now that I got the number what is my prize?" I wink.

Jace starts laughing. "Hold up your hand." He says.

I hold up my hand and he slaps it.

"So that was my prize? A high five? really?" I ask.

"Yo high fives are lit." Jace says while laughing.

I scoff and punch him in the arm.

I check my phone, it's 9 o'clock already. I've never stayed up this before.

Jace scratches the back of his head. "Aye Sam the mall is closing we should probably get going."

I nod my head then we leave the mall.

***

•AT SAMANTHA'S HOUSE•

Jace's car pulls into the drive way. He turns off the car and looks up into the starry night sky. He runs his fingers through his hair and then looks at me.

"So I was thinking tomorrow after school we could go to the mall and work on your wardrobe?" Jace says.

"Nope." I say bluntly.

"Why not?" Jace asks.

"Because you're failing History class. I'm your tutor and good tutors help their students succeed. Tomorrow after school you're coming over to my house and we're gonna study." I state.

Jace groans. "I hate studying." he says.

"Sometimes you hate something at first but then eventually it grows on you and realize it's not that bad." I say hinting to Jace that I was talking about him.

He smiles. "You're pretty smooth, I guess I'll study."

I smile back. "You didn't have choice."

I get out of his car and walk towards the door of my house and turn and wave at Jace as he pulls out of the drive way. As soon as he's out off sight I unlock the door and walk in the house.

It's extremely quiet and it's super dark. As soon as I turn on the light I see me mom in her pajamas.

"Samantha it's 10:30 where were you?" My mom asks sternly.

"I was at the mall with a friend." I say taking my jacket off and hanging in the closet.

My mom smiles. "Oh my gosh! You've never had a friend before tell me all about her!"

I look at my feet. "It's not a her." I say

My mom's smile grows bigger "It's a boy?!? What's his name? What's he look like? Do you like him? Are you dating him?"

I laugh at all these questions. "Yes mom it's a boy. His name is Jace and he's a little taller than me and he has dirty blonde hair. I don't have a crush on him. We're just friends. Remember mom I like Billy."

"Jace sounds amazing when can I meet him?" She asks eagerly.

"Tomorrow. I'm tutoring him and in return he's helping me win over Billy. Jace is a football player. But he's not the typical rude conceded type football player. He's nice." I explain while smiling

Never thought I'd say those words.

"I can wait to meet him!" She exclaims.

I hug my mom then I walk upstairs and into my room. I change into my pajamas and plop onto my bed. I stare at the ceiling.

My mom must really be happy that I making friends for a change. Because I never have friends. But Jace isn't really my friend is he? At school he completely forgets I exist when he's around his friends. Jace is popular and I'm not. We don't mix. But Jace has taught me that sometimes you have to switch up things and I guess I'll switch up my life and give 'having friends' a chance.
