The venue glowed beneath soft chandeliers, laughter floating in the air like music itself. Lieutenant Selena Soto's birthday was in full swing, with half the precinct and more gathered in celebration.ย

Everyone looked their best, but as Adam Karadec stepped in, the room seemed to pause for a second. He was a sharp contrast to the party's glitz. Formal, precise, and understated in his charcoal suit, his tie knotted neatly, his hair combed with clinical attention.ย

He looked exactly how he always did: composed. But inside, something was off balance.

He spotted Daphne and Oz near the bar, standing too close to be casual, their smiles a little too synced. Karadec raised an eyebrow and approached, letting a sly smirk curl on his lips.

"Did I miss a chapter of your working relationship, or are you two a couple now?"

Daphne laughed, but didn't pull her hand away from Oz's. "No! I mean, not yet."

Oz, grinning ear to ear, declared proudly, "But she did say I could court her. That counts for something."

"Is that so?" Karadec chuckled, shaking his head. "Well, you've got my support. Just don't let it affect your paperwork."

"No promises," Oz grinned.

As they walked away, still whispering and nudging each other, Karadec watched them with a strange mix of amusement and envy. He hadn't realized until that moment how much he wished he could hope for something like thatโ€”for himself.

But tonight, he didn't even know if she would show up.

The confession he gave her the other night. Those words that had felt so heavy and yet so necessary, still lingered in the air between them. And now, he feared he'd changed something between them. Maybe irreversibly.

He took a deep breath, shoved his hands into his pockets, and went to greet Selena, who stood near the bar, radiant and full of grace.

"Adam," she greeted with a smile, hugging him briefly. "Glad you made it."

"Wouldn't miss it," he replied sincerely.

After exchanging pleasantries, he grabbed a drink, gave the party one last glance, and slipped outside onto the balcony.

Morgan arrived late, but she carried herself like time had waited for her. Her gown shimmered with each step, deep navy and perfectly cut, hugging her figure with elegance. Her hair was swept to one side, revealing the gentle curve of her neck, her makeup subtle yet flawless. She looked like a vision from a paintingโ€”but her eyes darted through the crowd, searching.

When she reached Selena, the lieutenant's face lit up.

"Finally," Selena beamed. "Now my night's complete."

"You know there's no world where I miss this," Morgan leaned in, wrapping her in a warm embrace. "I'm nothing without you, Selena."

"You're everything, and you know it," Selena said, holding her by the arms to take in the gown. "You look gorgeous."

"Takes one to know one," Morgan teased.ย

They laughed softly together, before Morgan's voice shifted to something gentler.ย

"Have you seen Karadec?"

Selena tilted her head, smiling with something close to mischief. "Mmhmm. Balcony. He went out for air... or maybe to avoid a particular someone. Maybe you should join him."

Morgan caught the implication instantly. She opened her mouth to protest but closed it just as fast. Selena's expression said it all. She was giving her a window, and Morgan, for once, didn't want to be the one who waited too long.

Stepping onto the balcony, Morgan found Karadec, lost in thought.

Karadec stood leaning against the balcony railing, eyes lifted toward the stars.ย The cool night air greeted him like an old friend. For a moment, the noise behind him disappeared. Just him, the dark sky, and the weight of uncertainty pressing quietly into his chest.

"So this is where you're hiding."

He turned slowly. And there she was.

Morgan.

In a navy gown that shimmered like the sky above them. She looked every bit like the storm he couldn't outrun and the calm he secretly chased.

For a second, he forgot how to speak.

"You came," he managed finally, breathless. "You look... stunning."

"Thank you," she stepped closer, her voice warm and steady. "And there is no version of tonight where I'd let you stand out here alone."

He blinked, the simple truth of her presence cracking something open inside him. He set his drink down slowly, turning fully to her.

"Will you dance with me?" he asked, offering his hand.

Morgan's smile softened. "Out here?"

"Why not?" he murmured. "Stars are free."

She took his hand.

He placed a hand on her waist, the other taking her hand gently, and they began to sway to the faint music drifting in from the party. It was quiet, easy, and yet the most electrified moment they'd ever shared.

After a moment, he spoke. "I meant everything I said that night. But I'm sorry if it felt like too much, too fast. I just... I've spent my life being sure of very few things. And I'm sure about you."

Her eyes locked onto his as if they were reading him, trying to memorize every word.

"I didn't mean to make you feel rushed. Or cornered. That was never my intention. I just... I had to say it. But I know you've got so much going on. Your kids, Roman, everythingโ€”"

She touched his chest lightly. "Let me say something too."

He fell quiet, listening.

"I never expected this," she whispered. "When we first met, I didn't think we'd last two weeks as partners. You were too uptight. Cold. Grumpy. The human equivalent of a locked door."

Karadec huffed a quiet laugh.

"But then... something just... shifted," she went on. "We grew into each other. We made it work. And you became... one of the most important people in my life."

A pause.

"I don't think I could imagine any part of this... of me...ย without you in it,"ย she confessed, smiling faintly.

His eyes searched hers, a spark of something intense building behind them.

"And somewhere along the way," she said, her voice catching slightly, "I started falling. I just didn't realize it until you said it out loud first."

He froze, heart pounding. "Waitโ€”did I hear that right?"

Morgan laughed, the sound warm and nervous. "You did."

"Are you saying... you feel the same?"

She nodded, smiling with misty eyes. "I do."

He let out a shaky breath, as if he'd been holding it for months.ย

"Oh God," he muttered under his breath, voice cracking just a little. "This is... everything."

Her gaze held his, steady and sure. Whatever walls had once existed between them, they were gone now. It dissolved into the stillness of the night and the truth laid bare.

Karadec cupped her face with both hands. She leaned into his palm. Then, slowly, he bent forward and kissed herโ€”a firm, deep, sincere kiss, full of everything unsaid.ย

When he pulled away, he kissed the crown of her head, then rested his forehead against hers, closing his eyes.

Morgan closed her eyes too, drinking it in.

When they parted slightly, she wrapped her arms around his neck. He pulled her closer, enveloping her waist his arms.

They stood like that, swaying slowly.

"So," she whispered, "are you really sure you can handle me?"

"Morgan," he said, smirking, "After all we've been through? I think I've already passed your gauntlet."

"My kids are a different beast."

"I know," he nodded. "But they matter to me. Because you matter to me. And as long as I'm with you, I'll face it all."

She raised a brow. "Well, you did say you weren't going anywhere. That comes with responsibilities."

"Correction," Karadec leaned back slightly, just enough to see her eyes again. "That's more like 'I'm not letting you go anywhere.'"

They both laughed softly.

They danced like that for a while. The world around them faded, leaving only this shared rhythm, this hard-won peace.

They knew it then. This was inevitable.

From clashes and differences to long nights solving crimes, every strange twist of fate had pulled them toward this. And now, their lives were tangled in a way that made sense. In a way that felt right.

The stars, distant and silent, bore witness.

And from the doorway, Daphne's voice broke the spell. "There you are! We've been looking all over for you two!"

Morgan and Karadec turned their heads, still in each other's arms, and saw Daphne and Oz, fingers entwined, eyes sparkling with amusement.

"Oh," Morgan said. "So you two are official now."

"We might be," Oz teased. "But what's this? You guys hiding out here to avoid speeches or... just caught up in the moment?"

Morgan smirked, resting her head lightly on Karadec's chest. "A bit of both."

"Looks like we're not the only ones with news,"ย  Daphne giggled.

Karadec chuckled, raising a brow. "You started it."

Oz held up his hands. "Hey, no judgment. But you better believe we're all going to have to explain ourselves to Lieutenant Soto."

"Oh, she's going to have a field day," Morgan muttered.

They all laughed.

Karadec looked at Morgan. She looked up at him. And in a shared smile, they knew they were stepping into something real.

Together, the four walked back into the party. Two new couples, tangled in affection, laughter, and the promise of what was finally beginning.
