Session 6
22:50, 4 October 2021"Ok, the club is just around the corner," Quinn gave direction through her mic while she watched Spike navigate the packed, city streets.
"Yeah I can hear it," he replied upon rounding the corner and stepping into a darkened alleyway.
"Video quality just dropped, where are you?" Quinn panicked slightly as the tablet display cut out. She didn't know why she was so worried. It's not like Spike hadn't done something like this before, in fact what he was doing was a thousand times safer than anything he usually did. He was a seasoned bounty hunter after all.
"Dark alleyway," Spike reassured, but his location was hardly reassuring.
"Oh wonderful," Quinn laughed nervously as she listened to Spike quietly navigate his way through the dark.
Jet and Faye were both on standby. They stayed within earshot of the living room, but only Quinn had an earpiece. They waited on her orders, but since the mission was so simple, there wasn't any need for them to be out on the field. The duo busied themselves with a card game in the next room over, and despite Quinn being all alone for this, she actually liked the one on one time she was having with Spike.
"Entering the club," Spike whispered as his video quickly came back into view.
"Ok, you're looking for a short, heavier girl with medium length, red hair," Quinn commanded as she surveyed the video surveillance playing through the tablet.
"Oh I see her!" Quinn announced happily, and by the looks of it, Spike saw her too. Quinn watched as he slowly began approaching her table near the back of the club. It was dark inside, and a live band played on stage. As Mack's face became more and more visible, Quinn felt her heart begin to race. It was almost sickening seeing her face again considering how long they'd been apart. Of course in 9 months her physical appearance didn't change, but as she watched Spike ask if the empty seat at the table was taken, the tone in her voice shook Quinn to the core.
"Uh no, care to join me?" Mack replied confidently sending chills down Quinn's spine. Never in her life had she seen Mack act so boldly around a stranger, let alone an attractive male.
"My names Spike."
"I'm Mackenna, but everyone just calls me Mack."
Quinn hated listening to their introductions and she couldn't help but feel terribly upset. Spike was a ludicrously smooth talker, and Quinn despised watching Mack eat it all up. Quinn wished she was there instead, but she new that wasn't possible.
"Ask her what she does for a living and make sure to avoid looking at her necklace," Quinn pushed as she listened to Spike easily grab Mack's full attention. The entire situation quickly became nauseating to listen to, and Quinn was in no mood to lose her lunch. She just wanted to get this night over with.
Faye and Jet were lost in their own worlds while Quinn continued to feed spike instructions. Of course Spike was smooth, but he had to owe it to Quinn for the conversation starters. Every time there was a lull in speech Quinn would swoop in with some sort of idea.
Mack was loving every second of conversation and as Quinn watched her lean in closer to the table, she could tell that their plan was absolutely working.
As the night continued, Spike and Mack shared a few drinks together until the life began to drain out of the once bustling jazz club.
Spike had been talking to her for a little over an hour and when Mack suddenly invited him over to her place, he had no choice but to accept her offer.
"Ok this is perfect," Quinn stated excitedly, but something about it just didn't sit right with her. Was she jealous? Of course not, why would she be? This entire thing was merely an act, and besides, the chances of Mack seeing Spike again after this was close to zero.
Mack and Spike got into a cab together and talked the entire way through the 10 minute ride. It was strange seeing Spike so talkative. Quinn couldn't tell if it was just part of the act, or if he genuinely enjoyed talking to Mack. She hoped it was the first option, but again she didn't know why she cared so much.
Once Spike had made it back to Mack's house, Quinn knew the mission was coming to a close. Eventually, Spike managed to talk his way into getting a kiss from Mack. At that point Quinn turned off her camera. She didn't want to see anymore than she already had, but somehow that decision made her feel even worse than she already was. Quinn was subjected to only the imagery she could come up with in her mind, and as she listened to Spike continue to seduce her ex friend, she began to grow angry.
"Just get the chip and get out please," Quinn groaned, as she listened through the audible sounds of messy kissing through the microphone. Suddenly, Mack invited Spike to her bedroom. He accepted of course, but Quinn was taken aback by the offer. She didn't expect Spike to sleep with her, and she sure as hell didn't expect Mack to make the first move.
"Just get the fucking chip and leave!" Quinn grumbled angrily causing Jet and Faye to grow curious. They wandered into the living room shortly after Quinn had had her outburst.
"Spike..." Mack began to moan, and immediately Quinn became overrun with rage.
"You don't need to fuck her Jesus Christ," Quinn growled as her cheeks turned red.
Faye and Jet both turned their heads towards Quinn.
"Spike... please," Mack continued, and Quinn rolled her eyes.
"Are they...?" Faye questioned hesitantly from across the room. Quinn gave her an awkward nod.
Shortly after Spike had made it to Mack's room, the noises became beyond unbearable to listen to. Quinn found herself feeling sick to her stomach, and while she had her fists clenched at her sides she knew she wasn't going to last much longer.
"Just get the goddamn chip and leave, you fucking- ," Quinn's voice shook as she pulled the earpiece out of her ear and ended the connection. She cut herself off before she could continue. She knew Spike was just doing his job, but she was upset. Faye and Jet watched as Quinn slammed the tablet down on the table before storming out of the living space.
Quinn felt rage consume her as she sprinted towards the open loading bay. The crisp, night air caught in her lungs as she ran out onto the landing strip, and as she watched the city lights shimmered in the distance, the sound of Mack's voice jumbled within her mind. Tears began to well in her eyes while she dug her nails into the palms of her hands.
"He didn't have to fuck her," Quinn grumbled under her breath as she took a seat on the ledge of the landing space. Quinn hadn't seen Mack in months and she sure hated the fact that she just listened to her ex bestfriend get fucked by the arrogant jerk who wanted to turn her in for crimes she never even commit. The entire scenario was a mess, and Quinn despised every second she spent thinking about it.
She was outraged, and she knew when Spike got back she'd wouldn't want to have anything to do with him. Once she got her chip her life would be back on track. Soon she'd be off this dreadful ship, Mack would be behind bars, and Quinn would have her life back.
She simply didn't care that Spike was putting up an act. She new he was just playing a part, but he played it too damn well and Quinn felt like he had gone way too fucking far.
As her rage slowly began to fade, she thought about how strange it was to be so close to getting her life back, and it was insane to think she had never been this close before.
As excited as she was to finally be able to live her life again, something felt off. She didn't know if it was the anger she was feeling, or the hints of jealousy that were beginning to bubble up inside her, but for the first time in nine months, she felt as if she didn't have a life to come back to. ...
A few hours later, Spike returned to the ship. Quinn was occupied with a magazine, and Jet had managed to stay awake waiting for Spikes arrival. Quinn was sitting on the couch next to Faye who was passed out with her arm dangling over the edge of armrest. When Spike walked in to the room, Quinn's heart jumped out of her chest as her anger suddenly returned.
She had managed to calm herself down after she had spent some time on her own, but now that he had returned, all those feelings she had pushed down suddenly came jumping out again.
"Yo," Spike greeted as he stepped into the living space. He passed Quinn the microchip before stretching, and tossing his earpiece onto the coffee table.
"Hope you had a good night," Quinn scoffed as she examined the microchip in her hand. Spike shrugged before taking a seat on the armchair. Jet had walked towards the kitchen to fix Spike a snack while Faye continued to sleep peacefully along the couch.
"Hardly," he replied sluggishly before putting his feet up on the table.
"If you're going to lie to me at least make it believable," Quinn huffed as she connected the micro chip to the tablet.
"I was just following orders," Spike replied. Quinn rolled her eyes angrily.
"I never told you to sleep with her," she added impatiently as the data from the chip began to upload onto the tablet.
"What's your problem anyways?" Spike suddenly shot back. Quinn kept her eyes glued to the tablet before harshly stating her opinion.
"You're such an arrogant lowlife, of course she was all over you," Quinn muttered to herself without making any sort of eye contact. Spikes facial expression began to twist as he leaned back into the armchair.
"You're acting like a jealous child," Spike added coldly before sparking up a cigarette.
"Jealous? Don't flatter yourself," she sneered bitterly.
"Why else would you have hung up on me?" Spike questioned semi rhetorically as he put his arms behind his head.
Quinn rolled her eyes in response.
"I was just following the plan and now you're being unreasonably bitter," Spike mumbled under his breath before directly making eye contact with Quinn.
"Could you shut the fuck up for one second?" Quinn shouted. Her voice shook with rage and Spike could tell she was furious.
"I followed your plans exactly and now you're mad? It just doesn't make sense to me, plus you never even thanked me for getting you that damn thing," Spike gestured towards the microchip.
"You followed my plans exactly? Bullshit," Quinn sneered.
"Bullshit? Tell me how it was bullshit," Spike began to grow angry as he removed his hands from behind his head. There was a well established tension between them now, and Quinn felt like she was about to snap.
"I didn't tell you to sleep with her!"
"I didn't sleep with her."
"Don't fucking lie to me I heard what I heard," Quinn exclaimed lividly as Faye began to stir.
"You're overreacting, get over yourself," Spike replied rudely, and Quinn felt a part of her break.
"You fucked the girl I was in love with," Quinn snapped as she slammed her fists down onto the couch. Faye was quick to awaken, and for a moment silence filled the room around them.
"Well how was I supposed to know that?" Spike quipped pretentiously. Quinn didn't expect him to respond in such a way. Did he seriously lack that much sympathy? Couldn't he just apologize? Surely some part of him felt bad, but then again there was no way of knowing such things about a man as private as himself.
"Can't you just say sorry?" Quinn asked pathetically, but in her heart she knew he didn't owe her any sort of apology. At the end of the day he was simply just following orders.
"Your past means nothing to me," he replied smugly.
"Of course it doesn't," Quinn growled.
"Like you'd know what it's like to lose someone you love," she added, but as soon as she let those words leave her lips she knew she had made a mistake. Spike quickly slammed his fist down onto the table causing Faye to immediately shoot up from the couch.
"You know nothing about me," Spike bellowed firmly before sending Quinn a challenging glare.
"Maybe I would if you were to get over your massive fucking ego," Quinn ridiculed and Spike shook his head angrily.
"Give me a break," he groaned as he placed his hand on his forehead. His fist was red from the sudden impact with the table, and Quinn wouldn't have been surprised if it bruised.
"I hate women with attitudes," he grumbled. Quinn promptly shot upwards leaving the tablet on the couch beneath her.
"I have an attitude because you seamlessly slept with the woman I used to love," Quinn shouted.
"The LEAST you could do is feel some sort of sympathy!" She continued.
"You have no clue how watching that made me feel, do you have any idea what that's like to watch someone you love slip away from you like that?" Quinn finished fiercely.
"At least your love is still alive," Spike shot back as he slammed his fist into the steel wall behind him. He winced as his knuckles plummeted into the ships interior.
"She's not my love anymore. I'd rather see her dead," she murmured crossly before snatching the tablet off the couch and speed walking back to the loading bay.
"You have no idea what you're talking about," Spike sneered furiously as he watched Quinn storm off.
"You're a piece of shit," Quinn snarled under her breath as she ran off to her ship in tears.
