The Flames-Dex's POV
22:16, 7 June 2020A/N: HOORAY!!! Views! 49! Happiness! I just had to wait. And, as promised, UPDATE!
My mind was whirling.
Sophie wasn't answering her Imparter, Tam and Sophie were missing, and the Neverseen.
Rumors were going around that something was up.
The last time Sophie talked to Keefe, he said that something was up, the Neverseen were making new plans, but he didn't know what.
That was just yesterday, and now Sophie and Tam were in a hideout somewhere, and we didn't know where.
I shivered, knowing firsthand what could happen in a Neverseen hideout.
Even though the scars were mostly gone, the memories weren't.
Even Sophie didn't know this, mostly because she's been hanging out with Wonderboy and Mr. "President of the Foster-fan club" all the time now. I don't get it.
We were best friends, and now that I had manifested as a Technopath... I guess it was so lame that she had to leave me behind.
I stared at my Panic Switch. My tech was cool, but was the person behind it not?
I'm Sophie's best friend, and best friends are the best.... Right?
I mean, it's in the name, but what if...
I wasn't Sophie's best friend anymore?
Tears welled up in my eyes, but I refused to let them fall.
Tears are for when you're alone Dex.
Well, judging by how alone I've been lately, I guess I can cry anytime, anywhere.
A hand gently brushed my face, startling me out of my own thoughts.
I looked at the hand, following it up to a pair of silvery blue eyes, the color of mist on a lake.
Linh whispered, blushing. "Your hair was in your eyes. I just moved it so you could see better."
"Oh. Thanks."
I felt my cheeks warm, and scolded my stomach for warming up too.
Calm down. It's just Linh.
A sigh escaped my lips, and my core decided to squirm now.
Ignoring it, I turned back to staring at my Panic Switch.
"No Panic Switch yet?"
A sweet, clear voice soothed my thoughts.
Come on Dizznee. Stop with the water metaphors!
Clearing my throat, I responded, hiding my emotions, I thought.
"Nope. I hope they didn't forget about them. So many of Sophie's mishaps could end up less....."
I trailed off, trying to think of the right word.
"Troubling?"
Linh knew exactly what I was thinking!
"Yes! But she never presses it!"
Frustration I didn't know I was feeling burst forth from me.
I slammed my fist down on the floor between us, opening it at the last second, smacking my palm instead.
It felt good.
The cool tiles soothed me a little.
Biana walked over.
I guess I startled her with my outburst.
She sat down next to me.
"Dex, are you alright?"
"Yeah."
I paused.
Was I really alright?
"It's just that with Sophie and Tam gone...."
I heard myself saying, and I was a bit surprised.
Huh. I've never told anyone that. Except Sophie.
It felt good.
Maybe new friends aren't so bad.
Biana and Linh started talking, and I kind of tuned them out, staring at my Panic Switch.
Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I blinked.
My Panic Switch was buzzing, and pulsing charcoal gray, silver, charcoal, and silver.
Biana was saying something, and I shushed her. I wanted to focus on my ring.
That's never happened before.
It's always honey brown.
It hit me, and I mentally smacked myself.
That's Tam's.
I color coded them, wanting it to be a surprise, but lo and behold, no one used Dex's tech.
Sigh.
I could feel Linh and Biana staring at me expectantly, so I whispered,
"That's Tam's signal."
And then it stopped.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After that, good ol' Dex got forgotten again.
Not a thank you.
Nothing.
I guess I might as well get used to it.
Only cool people get to be on the cover anyways.
A/N: *Cough, Shannon, Dex, cough, Cover, cough*
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We light leapt to this place in the Forbidden Cities, Scotland, and straight into a burning inferno.
The Council screamed, and I would have chuckled if we weren't surrounded by the flames.
We were smack dab in the one place that wasn't burning, a lake, on an island, and the flames were slowly but surely evaporating all the water, and crawling straight towards us.
I turned around.
All I could see were flames.
Angry, red, hungry flames.
This must be Fintan's doing.
I could feel nothing but terror.
The Council apparently had vials of Everblaze extinguisher handy, but the liquid and gases did nothing to quench the thirst of the flames.
It was like it wasn't Everblaze.
The smoke from the strange fire drifted towards us, and I started to cough.
The adults started to talk, but I couldn't hear them.
The smell was so familiar, the stench of burning flesh.
Trying to focus, I stared at the flames.
Heated light. A chemical reaction. Thermal energy.
That's they were.
Right?
Nothing to be afraid of.
Wrong.
I had seen, and felt firsthand what they could do to a person.
11-year-old me screamed in terror, for all the times I couldn't.
Sinking to my knees, I stared.
My eyes sweeped the land, blazing orange, blue, purple even.
And black in one spot.
Black?
I stared a lot harded, squinting to see through the smoke.
Those weren't flames.
They were shadows.
"GUYS!!!"
"There! The black! Those are Tam's shadows!"
I couldn't believe it, and I pointed at the tiny speck of hope in the fire.
Who knew black wasn't so dark after all?
I could only hope that Sophie and Tam were okay.
A/N: Thanks for reading it! This chapter was sort of a filler, because I couldn't really think of anything, but, look on the bright side! Sophie and Tam have been found, thanks to Dex! Now, they just have to be saved. And what's happening to Keefe? Who knows? Not me! *shrugs* It'll come to me. Maybe....
A/N: AND CINNAMON ROLLS CAN HAVE PROBLEMS TOO!!! WE WANT TO HUG THEM BUT WE CAN'T!!! Please don't hate me......
